Droog earns provincial honour

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge honorary degree recipient Dr. Tom Droog is among three accomplished Albertans who will be recognized for their significant professional contributions and inducted into the Agriculture Hall of Fame. Each inductee has been a catalyst for change in advancing their areas of expertise. The other inductees are Dr. Ieuan Evans and Mabel Church Hamilton.

The awards are presented every two years and this year's ceremony takes place at the Delta Edmonton South on October 5.

"These three individuals are terrific champions for their industries and have dedicated their lives to ensuring Alberta's agricultural industry progresses in new ways," said Verlyn Olson, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. "I am honoured to induct these three individuals and thank them for their dedication, ingenuity and hard work."

Dr. Tom Droog of DeWinton, and his late wife, Emmy, started growing sunflowers as an alternative crop and soon turned Spitz, which sells sunflower and pumpkin seeds in re-sealable bags, into a snack product that captured 75 per cent of the Canadian market.

Droog, a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Honorary Degree recipient (2006) also recently established the Emmy Droog Chair in Complementary and Alternative Health Care – the Faculty of Health Science's first endowed Professorship. The professorship will enable evidence-based research to explore the issues and care practices associated with complementary and alternative medicine.

Parkland County's Dr. Ieuan Evans determined that prairie soil lacking copper hampers cereal production and when the mineral was added crop yields soared. As a horticulturalist, he propagated a species of cherry tree that is now sold commercially throughout Canada and the United States.

Mabel Church Hamilton of Innisfail, helped establish Angus cattle as one of the largest and most influential breeds in Canada. As a founding member of the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, she was instrumental in establishing the national cattle identification program.

Since 1951, the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame has recognized outstanding contributions to agriculture and rural development. To date, 126 leaders have been named to the Hall of Fame.

Remembering the late Anne Campbell

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community offers its most sincere condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and music lovers who were inspired by the late Anne Campbell, a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Honorary Degree recipient (1983), well-known leader of choral groups and a tireless advocate for music and music education.

Campbell passed away Apr. 13 at age 98 in Cochrane, Alberta - mother of Mac, Stewart and adopted son Alix Hector from Haiti, and grandmother and great-grandmother of many.

She touched the lives of literally hundreds of young women in Lethbridge as her choirs welcomed old and new choristers every year from 1953 to the early 2000s.

In 1926, Campbell started conducting youth choirs in Sutherland, Sask. at age 14. She founded the Southminster Junior Girls Choir at Southminster United Church in Lethbridge in 1953.

Through the years, her choirs grew in size and age, including the Mini Choir, Teen Clefs, Anne Campbell Singers and Linnet Singers.

Campbell left an indelible mark on choral music and the cultural aspects of Lethbridge and Canada, instilling the values of excellence and discipline in several generations of young women.

For her extraordinary community service, Campbell was awarded Member of the Order of Canada in 1976, an honorary degree from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 1983, and the Alberta Centennial Award in 2005.

Nominations sought for honorary degrees

Nominations are being sought for candidates to receive a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Honorary Degree. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ seeks to honour those individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the life of our society provincially, nationally and internationally in such areas as the professions, business, public life, philanthropy, the arts, humanities and the sciences.

It looks for individuals who will bring honour to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ with their presence, including those persons whose contributions have either touched Alberta directly or have been of genuine importance to the province.

The Post-secondary Learning Act provides that the chancellor, on the authorization of the Senate, may grant an honorary degree on a person.

While the Senate has the authority to select honorary degree recipients, the GFC Honorary Degrees Advisory Committee is soliciting nominations for honorary degrees other than LL.D.

Markin promoted to Order of Canada

Dr. Allan Markin, a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Honorary Degree recipient (2006), oil and gas industry entrepreneur and philanthropist, was promoted to an Officer of the Order of Canada by Governor General Michaelle Jean Wednesday, Apr. 7 at Rideau Hall.

Markin was one of 43 individuals to participate in the Order of Canada ceremony, which was created in 1967 (Canada's centennial year) to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Since its creation, more than 5,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.

Markin represents one of Canada's great entrepreneurial success stories. Since 1989, he has helped to build Canadian Natural Resources Limited from a small company of six employees into one of Canada's largest independent oil and gas producers.

A generous philanthropist with a special interest in health and wellness, he endowed a Chair in health promotion at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary, and helped establish a public health institute there.

He also supports education and the arts, and has been a benefactor to Northern Lights College, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and St. Mary's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ College.

Markin Hall, currently under construction on the U of L campus, bears his name in recognition of his key role in the Legacy of Leadership campaign, which raised more than $35 million to support scholarships and other academic endeavours at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Markin received an Honorary Degree from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 2006 and delivered the address to the graduands.
