The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has launched the Centre for Feminist Research (CFR) to bring together scholars from all disciplines who are employing a feminist lens in their research work, from gender and equity to society and empowerment.

The Centre for Feminist Research welcomes Ryan Crosschild and Dr. Tara MacDonald.

“The Centre for Feminist Research is an opportunity to bring together an interdisciplinary group of world-class scholars and students from across campus who are committed to the study of women, gender and intersectional power structures with the goal of creating a more just society,” says Dr. Janay Nugent (BA ’95), associate dean in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Dr. Tara MacDonald, an English professor with expertise in cultural studies, has been appointed director of the CFR, as well as the program coordinator for the BA and MA in Women and Gender Studies.

“The idea of the CFR is to create an interdisciplinary hub for faculty, but also for post-docs, grad students and even undergraduate students,” says MacDonald. “This work is already happening, but it’s often happening in silos.”

Originally from Nova Scotia, MacDonald earned a PhD at McGill ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in London, she taught at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Amsterdam. Before joining ULethbridge, she spent 10 years at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Idaho as chair of the English department and an affiliate faculty member in women and gender studies. Also joining MacDonald as a new member of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community is Ryan Crosschild, assistant professor in sociology. Both will contribute to teaching in the women and gender studies program, and both will help to shape the new research centre. Five faculty members from three faculties and schools will serve as the inaugural advisory committee, with additional members being welcomed as the centre grows and develops in its first year.

Along with elevating feminist scholarship on campus, MacDonald wants to reach out and partner with local, regional and global communities to advocate for meaningful change. Providing mentorship and experiential learning opportunities for students and early-career scholars will help build their professionalism. Such collaboration could also identify external funding opportunities.

As a centre devoted to scholarship and applied student learning and focused on coordination and collaboration, the CFR has the potential to enhance and expand research opportunities and course offerings across faculties.

“Feminist research has probably never been more important than it is right now, and in the few weeks I’ve been here, I’ve been really impressed by the quality of work that’s already happening on campus,” says MacDonald.

New pathway to law degree at heart of partnership between ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Bond ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ

A new partnership between the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Australia’s Bond ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will allow students in Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Management programs to pursue a Canadian law degree in just five years. The dual Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws (BA/LLB) and Bachelor of Management/Bachelor of Laws (BMgt/LLB) allows students to gain two degrees, making them eligible to practice law in Canada more quickly.

Alumnus Jay Merchant (BA ’05), who initiated discussions with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ about a dual degree program, earned his law degree from Bond ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in 2012, and currently teaches there while practicing law. He says he wishes the program had been available to him at the time and is thrilled that students will now have this option.

“I would have gone that route in a heartbeat, and I would have been employed a lot sooner than I was,” says Merchant. “The degree being offered is a game changer for ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students and prospective students looking for a program like this. There’s just nothing like it.”

How does it work?

Students begin with two years at ULethbridge in their chosen BA or general business management course requirements, completing 20 courses or 60 credit hours. They are then eligible to apply to Bond ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for years three and four (the LLB portion of their dual degree) where they will complete 24 courses or 72 credit hours. Year five is back at ULethbridge for an additional 10 courses or 30 credit hours. Upon completion of all requirements from both universities, students will be awarded both degrees, the ULethbridge Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Management and the Bond ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Bachelor of Laws.

Students will pay domestic fees while studying at ULethbridge and international student fees while in Australia. As well, students can apply for law school without having to write the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).

Bond ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is Australia’s largest Law School for Canadian Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor students. With a 20-year history of training Canadian lawyers and more than 150 Canadian students currently studying law at Bond, the university is home to an active Canadian Law Students’ Association.

For ULethbridge, the partnership aligns with its liberal education philosophy, encouraging study abroad opportunities, critical thinking and a well-rounded, worldly view.

“Part of becoming a global citizen is to learn about the people and lands beyond one's own borders,” says Dr. Janay Nugent, associate dean in the Faculty of Arts & Science. "Travelling provides so many opportunities for personal growth and development, as well as the ability to hone one's sense of curiosity through exploration, resulting in a whole new perspective about the world in which you live.”

For business students, Dean of the Dhillon School of Business, Dr. Kerry Godfrey, says the business and law combination is ideally suited to students particularly interested in corporate Canada or public service.

“The critical thinking skills honed at law school, alongside the problem-solving and management skills developed in business school, provide an outstanding foundation to launch a career in Canada’s business sector, public sector or the non-profit sector,” says Godfrey. “Graduates of this dual degree program will be very well positioned to make a positive impact on Canadian civic, civil and corporate society.”

Broader community invited to view popular Last Lecture Series as it moves to online format

It has become an annual rite of spring for ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students and now, the broader community will have the opportunity to take in an enhanced online edition of the Last Lecture Series.

Presented annually by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students’ Union (ULSU), the Last Lecture Series has become one of the most popular events of the academic year. It traditionally features three U of L professors talking about life lessons that cannot be learned in the classroom, posing the question to them, “If you could talk about just one thing for your last lecture, what would it be?”

This spring, with an in-person event not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ULSU is co-hosting with the student club PACT (philanthropy, advancement, community, traditions) and taking the event online. They have also expanded the lecturer list to an impressive eight speakers who represent a broad cross-section of disciplines from throughout campus. Celebrating a theme of adaptability, this impressive group will be online Friday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to present their individual thoughts on what adaptability means to them.

“With most end-of-semester events cancelled, we wanted an initiative that could bring the uLethbridge community together,” says Kierian Turner, one of the event organizers and a past PACT president. “The Last Lecture has always been important to students of the graduating class, so we prioritized moving to an online model so that students are still able to get that final takeaway. It was important to have a panel with diverse experiences and research backgrounds so that attendees have the opportunity to connect on a deeper level and have a more holistic experience.”

The Last Lecture is a book co-authored by Randy Pausch, detailing everything he wanted his children to know after he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Pausch delivered his last lecture entitled Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams as part of a lecture series where ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ are challenged to think about what really matters to them and give a Last Lecture.

History professor Dr. Janay Nugent appointed a Board of Governors Teaching Chair

A true lover of education who is passionate about helping her students realize the value of education, Dr. Janay Nugent (history) has been appointed a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors Teaching Chair.

Known for creating a class environment where students feel encouraged and safe to explore new ideas and skills, Nugent has spent years developing a teaching style and philosophy that is both supportive and challenging.

An expert on 16th- to 18th-century Scottish history, Nugent is a U of L alumna who completed graduate degrees at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Guelph before joining the Department of History as a sessional instructor in 2000, earning a faculty position in 2004.

Always eager to welcome new students to the university experience, she deliberately chooses to teach History 1000 each fall semester as she believes it is an integral opportunity to connect with students and assist them through the transition to post-secondary studies.

Nugent spends a great deal of time honing her teaching strategies, looking for new ways to engage students in active learning. She welcomes feedback from her students and incorporates their ideas into her lectures.

An ardent supporter of the philosophies of liberal education, Nugent is part of the Liberal Education Revitalization Team and sits on the Global Citizenship Cohort Advisory Committee. Through this involvement, she works to promote the values of liberal education and train students as critical and analytical thinkers.

One of the most popular teachers at the U of L, Nugent has consistently scored at the highest level for teaching through the Faculty Handbook performance evaluation system, was appointed a Teaching Centre Fellow in 2014, was the 2015 winner of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Award and the 2016 Distinguished Teaching Award winner.

Her appointment as a Board of Governors Teaching Chair is for a two-year term commencing July 1, 2017.

Nugent honing critical thinkers through lessons on history

At first glance, it seems difficult to see how the study of a religious movement in 16th century Scotland is relevant in today’s society. Spend a couple of hours with ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge history professor Dr. Janay Nugent (BA ’95) and the relevance will soon come into focus.

Nugent, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s 2016 Distinguished Teaching Award winner, will delve into the history of Scotland in this month’s instalment of the PUBlic Professor Series at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017 at Lethbridge City Hall. She will present Converting a Nation: family, religion, and Calvinism in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Scotland.

Dr. Janay Nugent's love of history was established early, sparked by a grandmother well versed in the history of her British ancestors, and then nurtured at Kate Andrews High School.

“It’s about trying to understand how identities are formed,” she says. “We’re studying this so-called irrelevant topic from the past, but it shows how governments and churches begin to shape identities. If they can influence people to change their faith, which is something people hold very close, then that is very relevant to the modern world.”

A Coaldale-born, Kate Andrews High School product, Nugent earned her bachelor’s degree from the U of L before venturing to Ontario where she completed her master’s and PhD at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Guelph. Her love of history was established early, sparked by a grandmother well versed in the history of her British ancestors, and then nurtured in high school. And while she began her post-secondary career as a psychology major, it took just one history class and what she calls an amazing group of U of L history faculty to get her hooked.

“I like history because it’s all about developing arguments and winning arguments and I like to do that,” says Nugent with a chuckle. “History was a good place for me.”

At Guelph, her focus turned to Scotland, inspired by a master’s supervisor who understood her preference for social, cultural and religious history and a desire to get into the lives of the people she studied. When introduced to the moral church courts and the seemingly unbelievable mission of Scottish Parliament converting an entire nation to Calvinism from Catholicism, Nugent found a research focus that has been central to her scholarship ever since.

“Most of my research has been driven by this question of how can you make an entire population convert its religion?” she says. “All the work I’ve done since 1995, when I started my master’s, has been building towards trying to begin to answer that question outside of the official story of the church itself.”

It is neither a simple nor straightforward question and it has allowed Nugent to pursue a number of different research avenues, and yet they all tie back to the original query.

A champion of liberal education, Nugent strives to impart upon her students the idea of creating global citizens who are broad thinkers when tackling the issues of today.

“A liberal education allows students the ability to really begin to process questions and problems that exist in our communities from a much broader perspective,” she says, challenging those who question the usefulness of history and humanities studies. “History teaches you the multiple contributing factors to how we got to where we are today. If you’re going to actually have successful solutions to problems, you’re going to have to understand the complex contributing factors, which often are very historical.”

Nugent is enthused by the opportunity to present as part of the PUBlic Professor Series, and while she is the presenter, she fully expects to learn a great deal from her audience.

“I find it’s a great opportunity for me to take the questions I give to my students out to the community to see how they begin to develop perspectives,” she says. “The questions that people ask me are often things I might not think of so, it’s just like the classroom, it’s a learning experience on both sides.”

PUBlic Professor Series spawns a spinoff

Although Faculty of Arts & Science professors could be labelled serious, scholarly types by day, the occasion of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s 50th anniversary has given them a reason to have a little fun while still imparting their knowledge.

The PUBlic Professor Series: 5-Minute Edition, is designed to showcase the diversity of research interests within the Faculty in an entertaining format. Each of 10 professors will have five minutes and a maximum of 15 PowerPoint slides to do a presentation on their research. The slides will automatically advance every 20 seconds, requiring the speaker to keep pace.

“After five minutes is over, I’m cutting them off,” says Dr. Kevin McGeough (BA ’96), a U of L geography professor and moderator of the event. “That makes it fun because there’s a kind of panicked element to the presentation. It’s especially fun for professors because we’re not known for being concise in our comments. That lightning-fast approach makes it interesting for people to watch.”

The professors who have agreed to participate include Dr. Jay Gamble (English), Dr. René Barendregt (Geography), Dr. Sergio Pellis (Neuroscience), Dr. Ute Kothe (Biochemistry), Dr. Omar Rodriguez (Modern Languages), Dr. Jennifer Copeland (Kinesiology), Dr. Janay Nugent (History), Dr. Locke Spencer (Physics), Dr. Maura Hanrahan (Native American Studies) and Dr. Hillary Rodrigues (Religious Studies).

“One of the things we’re looking for is that these research presentations be of interest to the public and to people who aren’t specialists in the area of expertise,” says McGeough. “That matches the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s liberal education approach where we have all sorts of different disciplinary backgrounds and we all contribute to a larger conversation.”

McGeough has some experience with the format from a session he participated in at an event hosted by the U of L Faculty Association. He has a few tips for his colleagues who’ll be participating.

“Talk quickly, have a sense of what you want to say before you get up there and pick your slides well. If you lose track of where you are, good slides can cue you to get back on track or find a new track to go down,” says McGeough.

The PUBlic Professor Series: 5-Minute Edition is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. in B756 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall. McGeough says the event will be informal and people are welcome to drop in on the session even after it’s started.

“We especially hope that alumni will come and experience this event. This will be a fun way to spend the afternoon,” says McGeough, adding everyone is welcome to attend.

Consistently recognized for creating an encouraging class environment, history professor Dr. Janay Nugent (BA ’95) has been awarded the 2016 Distinguished Teaching Award.

Nugent, who completed a bachelor of arts in history at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 1995, is known for her teaching excellence and ability to create a safe and open learning environment.

Nugent joined the Department of History in 2003 and for the past five years has scored at the highest level for teaching through the Faculty Handbook performance evaluation system. She was appointed a Teaching Centre Fellow in 2014 and was awarded the 2014-2015 Teaching Excellence Award by the U of L Students’ Union.

Nugent learned early in her career that creating an open, welcoming, respectful and safe environment is critical to providing an accessible university education. That belief formed the core of her teaching philosophy and she strives to establish a class environment where students feel encouraged and safe to explore new ideas and skills.

Each fall, Nugent chooses to teach History 1000 so that she can help students successfully navigate their way through the first term. She strives to engage her students with both practical and creative assignments, all underpinned by her desire to motivate students to succeed in and understand the value of their liberal education degrees. In this way, she ensures students think deeply and critically and helps put them on a path towards global citizenship.

Truth and reconciliation initiatives underway

Over the past year, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community has had unique opportunities to learn about Aboriginal ways of being and begin the process of reconciliation. In addition to two discussion forums, one with Dr. Leroy Little Bear (BASc (BA) ’72, DASc ’04) and one with Commissioner Chief Wilton Little Child, Dr. Martha Many Grey Horses, director of the U of L’s Iikaisskini First Nations, Métis and Inuit Centre has led many initiatives across campus.

Last October, Many Grey Horses organized a workshop for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community and local agencies on old Blackfoot words with Elder Beverly Hungry Wolf.

“Even though some of us are fluent speakers we are still severed from opportunities to hear these old Blackfoot words. The words are still used but mostly in ceremonial contexts and there’s knowledge connected to the words,” says Many Grey Horses. “The Blackfoot language is gentle; I always say it’s a language of the heart.”

Another workshop focused on First Nations traditional hand games. Working with Mary Ellen Little Mustache, and the oldest Piikani Elder, Alphonse Little Mustache, as co-facilitators, a Fine Arts class learned about popular team games that were known throughout North America. In another workshop, Elders John and Keith Chief Moon explained the origin of some of the old powwow songs and shared stories about the drum and nature.

“Our songs are closely linked to nature and it was revitalizing for students to feel connected to their heritage,” she says. “In all of these workshops, the students were learning a lot about their heritage and it was good for them to get that connection back.”

At Many Grey Horses’ recommendation, Keith Chief Moon also worked with Dr. Janet Youngdahl, a U of L music professor and conductor of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Singers, on a performance that featured choir music and Blackfoot drumming and singing at Southminster United Church.

“Another special initiative was the honour call ceremony,” she says. “That was held during the Meeting of the Minds conference. I worked with the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Students’ Association and with the Elder Peter Weasel Moccasin. The honour call was to recognize the work of four FNMI master’s alumni.”

“It’s the first time this particular honour call has been held on campus,” says Lucía Stavig, conference co-ordinator with the Graduate Student Association. “You could feel it. It was so haunting at the same time it was so powerful. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”

Many Grey Horses also organized a session on Blackfoot traditional child-rearing practices with Georgette Fox and Sophie Tailfeathers, two members of the Buffalo Women’s Society. Students in Dr. Janay Nugent’s (BA ’95) Women and Gender Studies class heard about Blackfoot teachings given by the four-legged, the winged ones, the water creatures and the Earth. They also spoke about the residential school experience.

“My students were just hanging on every word. They didn’t want to miss anything,” says Nugent. “You can read about residential schools but to have someone who lived that experience made it more real. Until you can see the expressions on their faces and their body language and hear the emotions in their voices, you don’t really understand how powerful and important traditions are.”

Nugent added the talk also brought home the idea that the entire community has a role to play in truth and reconciliation and understanding the effects of residential schools.

Two additional projects were conducted to show respect for the Métis. Many Grey Horses, along with Rod Mcleod, Métis elder, U of L employee Tara Froehlich (who demonstrated Métis beadwork) and City of Lethbridge inclusion co-ordinator Roy Pogorzelski (who performed a traditional jig), conducted a workshop to commemorate Louis Riel and the role he played in the history of Western Canada. A second workshop gave international students on campus the chance to learn about the Métis people.

In conjunction with the Lethbridge Public Library, Many Grey Horses is also working on developing an FNMI Children’s Literacy program as a pilot project. Partners in the project include the YWCA, Lethbridge School District No. 51, Lethbridge College, elders from the Kainai and Piikani First Nations, Faculty of Education professors Dawn Burleigh and Dr. Robin Bright, along with champions from the Lethbridge Police Service and Opokaa’sin Early Intervention Society. She hopes the project can be in place sometime this fall. Another project under development with the Galt Museum will focus on Blackfoot grandmothers telling stories.

Many Grey Horses also gave a talk about the impact of residential school and internalized oppression at a Women Scholars Group Speaker Series session.

“As I’m speaking, my grandson is born. So, on the one hand I was talking about a deep, heavy subject but on the other hand, there was this joy about new life. What a moment,” she says.

Childhood studies the basis for new research institute

The study of childhood issues from a multi-disciplinary perspective is at the essence of a new research institute established by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

The Institute for Child and Youth Studies will bring together researchers from several disciplines who are increasingly adding child and youth studies projects to their research portfolios. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors approved the new research institute at its October 11, 2012 meeting.

The Institute for Child and Youth Studies (I-CYS) formalizes a concept developed by a multi-disciplinary group of faculty members who hosted the successful Childhoods Conference at the U of L in May 2011.

Their efforts attracted researchers, professional practitioners and guests from around the world to consider the state of child studies. This was the start of a number of discussions, research partnerships and joint projects that eventually led to the establishment of I-CYS.

"Virtually every academic discipline touches on children and youth, but the information and the expertise is not often connected," says Dr. Janay Nugent, a history researcher and one of the six U of L faculty members involved in the process to launch the institute.

"We are aiming to bring people together for research collaborations, and to contribute to the broader community through partnerships with local agencies and policy-making organizations," Nugent adds.

"Our long-term plans include establishing a multi-disciplinary workshop series and a triennial conference devoted to understanding the role of children and youth in society, developing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Child and Youth Studies, as well as encouraging post-doctoral research."

This is the ninth Research Institute to be established at the U of L. David Hill, the U of L's recently-appointed Director of Centres and Institutes, says the Child and Youth Studies group will be a welcome addition to the cross-campus collaborations that are already taking place.

"In order to grow our research profile and move new ideas forward, we are encouraging our people to work together in different ways. There are many positive outcomes I see in bringing this group – and the people they attract – into the U of L family to further research in this very critical area, and I look forward to working with them to establish this institute."

An advisory committee is also to be established, with input from researchers, community agencies, First Nations, Metis and Inuit groups as well as undergraduate and graduate students. There is also a provision in the organizational structure for affiliate researchers from other universities in Canada, international scholars and professional practitioners working with children and youth.

Six U of L researchers from the U of L will form the initial directorate. They include: Dr. Louise Barrett, Psychology; Dr. Elizabeth Galway, English; Dr. Heidi Macdonald, History; Dr. Jan Newberry, Anthropology; Dr. Janay Nugent, History; Dr. Amy von Heyking, Education.
