��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge to double online spaces in therapeutic recreation program

Given an aging population and increased interest in online learning, which has accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is doubling the number of online seats in its Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation program.

Therapeutic Recreation faculty members include Zac Crouse, Dr. Sienna Caspar and Devan McNeill.

“We are doubling the number of seats to 64 to keep up with demand,” says Devan McNeill, an instructor in the program. “We’ve had a waitlist for a few years as demand for our program has grown across Canada. We take students from British Columbia to Newfoundland.”

The Faculty of Health Sciences first offered the online program in 2015. It has proven to be a popular choice for students, as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ typically receives four times more applications than seats available. Training more therapeutic recreation professionals now will help fill the demand for such workers in the years ahead as the population ages.

“All indicators see growth in the profession, especially as the baby boomer generation ages,” says McNeill. “This will increase the need for recreation therapy in long-term care facilities, in hospital and clinical settings, and in community care. Our program is profession-based, similar to nursing, and our graduates can apply to recreation therapist positions across Canada.”

The online program offers students increased flexibility in how they complete the program. They can study full- or part-time, fit classes into their schedule and remain in their home communities, which helps reduce costs.

U of L study shows gaps in services for youth with mental health disorders

A new study by ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers has shown parents of children with complex mental health-care needs face enormous struggles trying to find appropriate services in Alberta’s public health system.

Dr. Brenda Leung, a U of L Faculty of Health Sciences professor, and her team interviewed 16 parents from across the province who had a child under the age of 18 diagnosed with a mental health condition to learn about their experiences as they searched for care and resources for their child. The study was recently published in the Journal of Child Health Care.

“We don’t know much about the challenges families face as they navigate the health-care system to find treatments for their children,” says Leung. “In this study, we wanted to capture the voices of families on how to improve access to health-care services.”

The results revealed three main themes. Parents talked about fragmented health-care services, difficulty in navigating a complex system and the distress parents experienced as a result.

“The reality for many families and parents is that looking for and finding care they need is not an easy process,” says Leung. “There are gaps and barriers hampering the parents’ experience and it’s not in any one region, per se; it’s across Alberta, unfortunately. Those who live in more isolated locations struggle even more to find services and help. People in urban centres have a hard time trying to figure out who to see or where to go when their child has more complicated types of mental health issues.”

“Navigating the Alberta health-care system to seek help for a child’s mental health disorder has been and continues to be a terrible experience,” says Cynthia Wandler, a parent who participated in the study and one of its authors. “It’s important to me to raise awareness about this for the sake of other families in similar circumstances. If we’ve had to go through this, what can we do to improve the situation and the system for other families coming behind us?”

Wandler describes the issues she’s grappled with in a documentary created by a filmmaker in coordination with the researchers; similar stories were shared by other parents in the study.

They described having to try many avenues to find the help they need. One parent described carrying a binder with their child’s documentation because the various doctors involved didn’t communicate directly with each other.

“The lack of communication among professionals within health care and outside of health care across different sectors like social services and schools make it hard to have a continuum of care for the child,” says Leung.

Parents did report some positive experiences. Having a physician, nurse or frontline worker who understands, listens and pays attention to the parents’ concerns really helped the families deal with their concerns. However, one finding that surprised Leung was the amount of distress parents expressed and how some parents were traumatized by their experiences in dealing with the health-care system. Not being able to find help for their child left them feeling isolated and sometimes judged.

“There’s also very little support for parents, who are already experiencing stress from dealing with a sick child,” says Leung. “Going outside and seeking help for your child and not getting it, as well as not knowing where to go is another added stress that affects their own mental health.”

Wandler can certainly identify. She once spent weeks filling out paperwork and getting the needed documentation to apply for an Alberta Health Services program at the direction of the school psychologist, only to be told her child wasn’t eligible. She’s also had to sort out mistakes made by organizations whose mandate is to provide support, something that has cost her both time and money. She’s faced a nine-hour wait in a hospital emergency room only to be told she shouldn’t have brought her child in to begin with.

“That’s just the tip of the iceberg,” says Wandler. “There’s a big disconnect within the health-care system and also between the health-care system and the education system.”

Parents had no difficulty coming up with practical recommendations and feasible solutions, including the option of having virtual or telehealth appointments, especially for those who live in rural or remote areas. A multi-system approach, where health care, the school system and social services have the same information and can collaborate, would also help provide appropriate and timely supports.

“One thing that really needs to improve is continuity of care while accessing public health services,” says Wandler. “If there was somebody who was assigned to follow your case through the system and help streamline things, that would make a world of difference.”

She also recommends the establishment of an advisory committee whose members are parents and caregivers who’ve experienced the system firsthand, so those in the health and education ministries can hear directly from the families they’re affecting when they make decisions.

“I hope the study and the accompanying documentary affect some positive change for families navigating the provincial health-care system, that health-care providers would be more compassionate and services would become more plentiful, more user-friendly and streamlined,” says Wandler.

Leung says the researchers are tentatively planning for the next step, which is to bring different sectors together and examine the feasibility of implementing solutions in Alberta that have succeeded elsewhere.

Penner to receive Health Sciences Award

On Saturday, October 13, 2012, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences will host the third annual Friends of Health Sciences Awards reception, giving the Faculty the opportunity to show its appreciation to the many individuals and organizations who have supported its programs in practice settings.

Each year, the Faculty of Health Sciences recognizes an individual or an agency that has made a significant contribution to health education and research in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

This year, the Faculty is pleased to honour Jennifer Penner, RN, BScN, as the 2012 Friends of Health Sciences Award recipient.

Penner is a veteran health-care professional with more than 25 years experience as a registered nurse and nurse clinician in a wide variety of settings across Alberta.

Originally from Bow Island, Alta., Penner entered the health-care profession as a multi-award-winning graduate of the Medicine Hat College School of Nursing and began her career in Bow Island, Alta.

Apart from returning to school to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and Critical Care Nursing Certification from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta, Penner has spent her career in southern Alberta in a variety of clinical and managerial roles. Most recently, she has led a variety of initiatives that support health-care professionals working with people experiencing chronic heart failure.

In addition to developing a comprehensive educational resource book to help patients and families, Penner has worked on several evidence guided heart failure optimization projects in conjunction with physicians, interdisciplinary care professionals and nursing professionals who worked to transfer evidence into practice and endorse an integrated approach to heart failure care.

As a guest lecturer at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College, Penner has freely shared her knowledge of the nursing profession and, in her capacity as a mentor to numerous nursing students, has provided valuable advice, employment supervision and preceptorship to the next generation of health-care professionals.

"Through her commitment to advancing health-care practices and knowledge, Jennifer Penner exemplifies the values and vision of the Faculty of Health Sciences," says Dr. Chris Hosgood, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. "We are very proud to recognize her contributions by honouring her with the 2012 Friends of Health Sciences Award."

Lamb FNMI project earns major award

A ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences project is making an impact on First Nations, Métis and Inuit learning, and has been recognized with a major award.

Ashoka Canada, The Counselling Foundation of Canada, The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative and partners announced a number of award-winning ideas and projects that grabbed top honours in the Changemakers Initiative: Inspiring Approaches to FNMI Learning.

Among the winners is a project directed by learning facilitator and current master of arts student Marilyn Lamb (BA/BEd '96).

Learning facilitator and master's student Marilyn Lamb says targeted support can greatly increase graduation rates of FNMI students.

"I am so honoured yet overwhelmed with this recognition and award," says Lamb. "The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is committed to supporting its First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, and I am proud to be part of this circle."

Lamb says that the goal of the program is not only to personally support students so they can successfully complete their degrees, but also to improve cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural education.

"Before the support services were in place, enrolment and retention were low, with only a handful of students spread across the four-year bachelor of nursing and bachelor of health sciences programs."

With targeted support, those student numbers have steadily increased.

"More than 60 students are currently enrolled for the 2011/2012 school year and continued growth is anticipated. Correspondingly, graduation rates of FNMI students have also increased," she says.

Lamb's submission, Support Services for Aboriginal Students in Health Sciences, was selected from more than 250 entries.

The program is intended to provide support to students by: offering assistance in the often-challenging transition from home and family life to university; mentorship programs with elders and aboriginal health care professionals; as well as tutoring and counselling support. In addition, social networking opportunities are provided along with scholarship and bursary application assistance.

Senator Mitchell praises positive contribution from U of L program

Senator Grant Mitchell recently addressed the Senate to discuss the unique Support Program for Aboriginal Nursing Students (SPANS) at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Following is text from his address.

Honourable Senators, it is my pleasure to speak about an exciting program offered at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in Alberta. It is the Support Program for Aboriginal Nursing Students (SPANS).

This program was created in response to the shortage of Registered Nurses in rural and First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities across Canada. There is an urgent need for members of these communities to become nurses to address the health issues experienced among Aboriginal people and to provide appropriate health services within their communities.

The main objective of SPANS is recruiting and retaining Aboriginal students who are academically capable and interested in pursuing a nursing career. Assistance and support is then offered toward providing the necessary academic background needed to complete a BN within the existing Bachelor of Nursing program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. It is hoped that when the students have completed their program, they will consider returning to their home communities to work.

SPANS is a partnership amongst the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences, Red Crow Community College, Blood Tribe Department of Health, Aakom-Kiyii Health Services (Piikani Nation), Siksika Health Services and the Blackfoot Confederacy.

There are several elements to this unique program. One element is the pre-nursing year, a transitional year that provides students with an opportunity to enroll in required courses for admission to the nursing program. And they are supported in the often-challenging transition from home and family life to university.

Another element is the integral role that Elders have in the program. Their discussions with students help them to examine concepts related to nursing and health care from a Blackfoot perspective.

In addition to learning from Elders, the Aboriginal nursing students have also benefitted from a Mentorship Program, which has involved current Registered Nurses who work in the Blackfoot Confederacy.

Opportunities for social networking and tutoring are also provided to support the students.

Designated staff and infrastructure provide additional academic and personal support. Thanks to the leadership of the learning facilitator and administrative assistant, the students can feel supported in all that they do.

The success of this program can be measured in a few important ways.

The program has recently expanded to assist students working towards degrees in Addictions Counselling and Public Health. The program has grown from seven students to approximately 60 in four years.

The retention rate of the program is also an indicator of success: of all the Aboriginal nursing students who started in SPANS, only one is no longer enrolled in a post-secondary program. The majority of Aboriginal students remain in a health-related program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Another impressive measure of success is that the students in this program have the opportunity to complete their clinical practicum in their home communities on local reserves and to become role models for other community members.

Honourable Senators, please join me in commending the students and staff of the Support Program for Aboriginal Nursing Students at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. They are truly a part of an innovative and visionary endeavour that will benefit First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities across Canada for years to come.

U of L Health Sciences Researcher Among YWCA Lethbridge Women of Distinction Award Recipients

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences researcher Dr. Bonnie Lee joins Lethbridge College president Tracy Edwards, special needs supporter and community volunteer Nadine Chandler and addictions/recovery advocate Mallory Kristjanson, the YWCA Young Woman of Distinction, as recipients of the 2010 Women of Distinction Awards.

Brief biographies are outlined below.

YWCA Women of Distinction Awards recognize outstanding women who live and work in Southern Alberta. This year four women have been selected.

Through a competitive process, the honourees are chosen from a group of nominations. The awards are based on the candidate's accomplishments, commitment and leadership. It is important for the YWCA to recognize these accomplishments on an ongoing basis.

The Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony is a wonderful venue to showcase the talent and leadership of women in Southern Alberta. Women honoured have been trail blazers, entrepreneurs, innovators, social advocates, and volunteers.

BONNIE LEE

Bonnie Lee, Ph. D. of Lethbridge is 2010 YWCA's Woman of Distinction in the Spirit of Women category.
Bonnie¹s experiences as a global citizen took her from Singapore where she was born to nine other cities in Asia and North America before locating in Lethbridge in 2005. The positive influence of her mother and early education with the Maryknoll Sisters in Hong Kong is reflected in her values and sense of purpose.

Her undergraduate degree in English Literature is from Smith College, Massachusetts and her Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Ottawa.

Bonnie's life and career have gone through numerous metamorphoses: speech-language pathologist, marriage and family therapist, Unitarian Universalist minister, and now: professor and researcher at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

One theme remains constant, her dedication to draw out people's innate gifts through creating supportive relationships. Her research and clinical contributions using "couple relationship" to work on problem gambling and other addiction issues are gaining recognition nationally and internationally.

In spite of a major loss in her life, Bonnie's zest for living and learning remains strong as she enjoys close relationship with her two adult children. Since moving to Lethbridge, she has grown to love the land and skies of Southern Alberta that inspired her paintings which express her connection to nature and the earth.

NADINE CHANDLER

Nadine Chandler of Lethbridge is YWCA's Woman of Distinction in the Social Advocate category. Nadine is a pioneer in the integration of special needs students into the public schooling system.

What began as "looking after the interests of her own child" grew to be an international norm in the field of education. She is a role model and a leader in prevention and intervention programs in Lethbridge and all of Alberta.

She grew from being a new mother who reached out for support and education about what was best for her son, to being a visionary and advocate in equality education for children with special needs, a support to other mothers, a resource to teachers, administration and support staff, and a coach and friend to young women with special needs.

While others may have ceased this level of involvement when their child graduated from high school, Nadine has continued to give, staying current of the latest knowledge in the field of special needs, coaching for the Special Olympics and volunteering in organizations that serve the needs of adults with disabilities.

TRACY EDWARDS

Dr. Tracy L. Edwards of Lethbridge is our Woman of Distinction in the Community Commitment category. Originally from Ontario, Tracy worked fifteen years for the Nova Scotia Community College before moving to the United States to pursue doctoral studies.

She has twice been designated as a Kellogg Fellow and is the recipient of numerous scholarships and leadership awards. She was recognized in 2007 as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Community College Leadership program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Texas at Austin.

Tracy holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees from Saint Mary's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Halifax and her doctorate is from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Texas at Austin, with a specialization in community college leadership.

She has been the President of Lethbridge College since July of 2005. Tracy and her husband reside in Lethbridge and are the proud parents of four grown children and doting grandparents to five grandchildren.

MALLORY KRISTJANSON

Mallory Kristjanson of Lethbridge is YWCA's Young Woman of Distinction in the Turning Point category.

Mallory was born June 30, 1986 in Lethbridge and attended Wilson Middle School and graduated from Winston Churchill High School. She is deeply involved with a recovery program and sponsors women of all ages through their journeys.

She has volunteered with the Lethbridge Regional Hospital in the pediatrics ward, at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, working directly with inmates struggling with addiction and other problems; and as a server at the Soup Kitchen.

Mallory loves walking her dog, Timber, in the Old Man River bottom, writing songs, journaling, Hip Hop dancing and swimming. To stay grounded and spiritually filled, she attends the Celebrate Life Recovery Service at Central United Church in Calgary weekly.

Keeping our children safe

If you ever have to cross a street with this group of nursing students, they'll tell you when you've done it wrong.

Safety City, a local not-for profit organization that provides pedestrian and bicycle safety training to children age 6 to 12, is benefiting from a unique partnership with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences and its third- and fourth-year nursing students.

The two organizations are launching the second year of a successful partnership in which U of L students work with Safety City staff to deliver an expanded education program as part of their community health coursework.

The partnership means that Safety City can serve upwards of 50,000 children per year in southern Alberta, and be able to offer new and updated programs off-site as well as at the Safety City Training Facility, located at the east end of North Parkside Drive, just outside the north gate of the Lethbridge Exhibition grounds.

"The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences and the nursing students have been instrumental in helping us keep our doors open," says Safety City executive director Linda Besseling.

Safety City has been delivering children safety programs to the community for the past 13 years. Over the past couple of years, Safety City experienced a cut in funding from some key donors, which resulted in a significant operational shortfall. This impacted the ability of Safety City to continue to offer the programs that are important to the children of our community and to their overall safety.

"Now, we are well on our way to becoming more sustainable, and the successful partnership between Safety City and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge nursing program is a great example," says Besseling.

Students said the collaboration fits perfectly with the health promotion and injury prevention component of their program.

"We have been able to see a change in how the children cross the street in the short hour they are with us," says student Tabatha Vanderwekken. "This experience has been really rewarding just knowing we are helping to prevent injuries and save lives."

The students are also working on other projects, which include revising and improving programs, as well as researching how to deliver the programs to special-needs adults.

"We will present a final report to the Safety City board at the end of the semester," Vanderwekken says. "These different opportunities have allowed us to learn many new skills that we can use for the rest of our nursing careers."

Nursing students make community contribution

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Health Sciences (Nursing) students will head to class as usual Thursday, only this time they'll be the teachers.

Teaming with Safety City to deliver expanded programming, services and educational experiences to elementary school children, the U of L students will make a pair of presentations Thursday morning at the Safety City site. It's a partnership that benefits all parties.

"The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences and the nursing students have been instrumental in helping us keep our doors open," says Safety City Executive Director Linda Besseling.

Kulig receives grant to study Mennonite attitudes

A ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences researcher will receive more than $180,000 from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (Palliative and End of Life Peer Review Committee within the Population and Public Health Institute) over the next three years to study a little known, but significant population of Canadians and their beliefs about death and dying.

Over the next three years, Dr. Judith Kulig will study beliefs and practices about death and dying among Low German Speaking (LGS) Mennonites in southern Alberta and southern Manitoba.

Nation-wide, there are an estimated 80,000 individuals in this group, but the large concentration of LGS Mennonites in southern Alberta and rural Manitoba allows for a large population to be sampled, as well as relevant information to be gathered from health regions and care providers.

Two of her key goals are to identify any policies and standards regarding how palliative care services are provided for this unique population, and to create best practice guidelines for the palliative care of LGS Mennonites.

"Low German Speaking Mennonites are a religious group with beliefs ranging from conservative to liberal outlooks," Kulig said. "Their unique spiritual beliefs impact their perspectives on health, illness and expectations of care, but little is known about their viewpoints on death and dying."

Kulig says that regardless of what people die from, it is how LGS families and communities respond to the deaths and what their expectations are of palliative care that are not understood. As well, she added that over the next 10 to 15 years, the current population will have aged and will likely be experiencing any number of chronic and terminal conditions which also enhance the need for palliative care, but with adjustments that factor in their particular culture and belief systems.

"Because LGS Mennonites live in rural areas, the demands on the existing health regions are already great and will only increase," Kulig says. "Collecting information about death and dying among LGS Mennonites will allow for the development of policies, care guidelines and understanding among health professionals who care for this population."

The research will be conducted through collaboration with partners in two relevant health regions in southern Alberta (the former Chinook Health and Palliser Health Regions, which now fall under the administrative umbrella of Alberta Health Services) and in southern Manitoba (Central Regional Health Authority) as well as the Mennonite Central Committee. Personal interviews will take place with caregivers, health professionals and members of the LGS community in addition to an analysis of palliative care documents.
