The Spring 2013 term will see the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge offer a new course targeted at first-year students, helping them to become aware that they are part of communities that are here to benefit and support their endeavours.

LBED 2850: Mapping Self, Career, Campus, Community is a trial course that was developed by the Academic Success - Achievement and Learning Resources subject matter team, a subcommittee of the Recruitment and Retention Planning (RRP) Committee.

Mapping is at the heart of this course. Exposure to this topic from a variety of perspectives will encourage students to better understand themselves, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and what the surrounding community of Lethbridge has to offer them. Course presenters are a who's who of past and present renowned instructors and service providers, including Dr. Leah Fowler, Dr. Leroy Little Bear, Dr. Mary Runte, Pat Tanaka and Dr. Shelly Wismath to name a few.

The course will delve into a variety of topics, from campus ghost stories to the Blackfoot territory, mapping yourself, mapping your career and service learning. It is also designed to get students out of the classroom by exploring and mapping the campus and discovering just what it has to offer. This experiential approach is aimed at building a cohort of students and encouraging campus and community citizenship. Students will then return to the classroom to map their experiences, making use of a variety of approaches, digital and otherwise, to illustrate what they have learned.

The course is designed to help students with the transition to university life by providing active learning about community resources, including those that will support their success through to graduation. Students will visualize relationships they have and then use mapping as a context to share those relationships with others. Everything in the course is geared to help students develop both academically and personally.

In the end, the goal is to have students realize that they don't need to leave campus on weekends and head to Calgary or go back home to have positive experiences. Instead, they can be fully engaged here at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.
Dr. Jan Newberry, 2011 Board of Governors' Teaching Chair will lead the course and is excited about the opportunities it presents.

"The organizing idea for this course is community mapping, which is based on principles of learning about the communities you live in through mapping (in the broadest sense of that word) what they offer," says Newberry. "The mapping metaphor extends from how a student maps out an essay or the coulee, to mapping research clusters and the resources available to support student success. This course takes a liberal education approach that emphasizes multiple perspectives, and it is designed to highlight some of our most dynamic teachers as a way to introduce students to the Faculties and disciplines at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge."

Upon the term's completion, the course will be evaluated to see how it benefited its first class, and subsequently how to move forward to bring this type of learning to a broader segment of first-year students.

These endeavours highlight the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's dedication to providing an enhanced student experience within a framework of liberal education and interdisciplinary inquiry.

Burke helps ignite a passion for science

The irony that Kristy Burke (BSc '08) had no room for science in her youth is not lost on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's manager of youth science programs. In fact, it's that awareness that she could have used a science mentor that pushes her in her role today.

"I personally hated science and did everything I could to avoid it when I was in high school," says Burke, recognized as one of the 2012 Mentor of the Millenium award winners by the Alberta Women's Science Network.

"When it came to finding a job, I looked back at the choices I made in school and the things I eventually became interested in, and realized I should have taken Bio 12 and Chem 12, all these courses I ended up having to take as an adult."

Burke, who grew up primarily in Prince George, B.C., eventually became interested in the environment, earning a diploma from Selkirk College in recreation, fish and wildlife. She translated that into a degree in environmental science at the U of L, took a year off to have her first baby, and then began working in her current role in 2008.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's youth science programming (now celebrating its 10th anniversary) had already made great strides in its first six years, but there was room for much more growth.

"It was originally just programs offered in the four summer months, but now we have a variety of clubs, Operation Minerva, we do birthday parties, we've been running workshops throughout January and February, we really are busy year-round," says Burke. "I think there was a demand for it because there's not a lot of science outreach outside of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ."

Igniting a passion for science, and having the resources to fuel that passion, is what the programs are all about. Burke wants kids to see the doors that open up for those who have a breadth of science knowledge.

"Science is often made so difficult for them at the lower levels that they get turned off of it," she says. "Our first goal is to have fun and to make fun somehow related to learning. We try to support the curriculum in a lot of our programs and sometimes it's just a matter of getting their hands dirty and getting into it. Often, their teachers don't have the resources or the time to do the programming and if they are home schooled, science is really hard for parents to teach."

A mother of two, Burke understands how important it is to create early positive experiences for children. She is especially interested in encouraging young girls and minority students to pursue scientific careers.

"A lot of girls want careers where they can help and contribute to the public good and they haven't been able to make that connection with science careers," says Burke. "With Operation Minerva, they get to see real people, real women as scientists, and it humanizes the profession for them."

Operation Minerva and Operation Minerva for Aboriginal Girls are programs she's invested a lot of time in promoting. They act as mentorship programs for young girls interested in science.

Burke is currently working on a master's degree in education under the tutelage of Dr. Leah Fowler. Her focus is the effectiveness of the Operation Minerva programs and whether they translate to young girls pursuing scientific careers. She is hoping to interview girls who have gone through the programs and eventually show up as U of L students.

As she looks ahead, she envisions reaching even more youth through science outreach by bringing disadvantaged children into the fold.

"I think the direction a lot of science outreach is going is towards breaking barriers, to kids who don't have a lot of access to science," says Burke. "A lot of that is girls or underprivileged children whose parents can't afford to send them to camps. We want to open that world to them."

Alumna Chelsea Matisz (BSc '06, MSc '09) was recently named the winner of the Ashton Cuckler New Investigator Award. This award is handed out by the American Society of Parasitologists and is given to the top graduate student in the field, based upon the quality of research accomplished during a candidate's graduate studies. In the past, this award has gone to a recently-graduated PhD student, while Matisz is currently in a PhD program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary. She will be honoured at the Society's annual meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, in June.

Soprano Acacia Doktorchik (MMus) presents her final Graduate Recital on Apr. 14 at 8 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall.

Mart Blicharz (MFA New Media) has an exhibition entitled, Breaking The Spell: Work in Progress, showing at the U of L Penny Building until Apr. 15.

Tasha Diamant (MEd student) was invited to present a Human Body Project event at the Union Theological Seminary, a graduate degree-granting seminary associated with New York's Columbia ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Her presentation included a live Human Body Project performance followed by a discussion with faculty and students. The Human Body Project is the subject of Diamant's MEd research project, which mostly consists of a 53-minute documentary film, and is under the supervision of Dr. Erika Hasebe-Ludt and Dr. Leah Fowler.

Nicholas Louma (BFA '08) had artwork in the exhibition, Mind the Gap, at the Art Gallery of Swift Current in March.

Anna VanderHeide (BMus/BEd) sang in a Tribute to Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin organized by the newly formed Lethbridge Jazz Society in April.

Mike Pinder (Operations Co-ordinator, Sport and Recreation Services, BSc '04) was given a Lethbridge Sport Council Achievement Award for coaching excellence. Pinder is an assistant swim coach with the LA Swim Club, and in addition to coaching Youth Olympic medalist Rachel Nicol, is highly respected by athletes and parents for his dedication and commitment to the sport of swimming.

Ken Allan's (Art) article, Barnett Newman's The Wild: Painting as Spatial Intervention, has been accepted for publication by the American journal October, published by MIT Press.

Taras Polataiko (Art) had work displayed in the group exhibition, Delinear, at the Barbara Edwards Contemporary in Toronto.

Knud Petersen, a longtime supporter of Pronghorns Athletics through the Horns Booster Club, Operation Red Nose, Pronghorn Dinner & Auction, Casino Chair and Adopt-A-Horn programs, was given a Lethbridge Sport Council Achievement Award for Spirit in Sport.

Collin Zipp (MFA Art) is participating in a residency, culminating in an exhibition, at Daimon Video in Gatineau, Que.

Soprano Rachel Sinnott (MMus) presented a Masters Recital on Apr. 7 in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall.

Pronghorns thrower Heather Steacy was given a Lethbridge Sport Council Achievement Award as Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 2010. Steacy, who took a year off of Canada West competition, devoted her time to the Canadian National Track and Field team, winning a gold medal at the North America, Central America, and Caribbean Championships (NACAC) where she threw a personal best of 67.20 m in the hammer throw.

Billy McCarroll (Professor Emeritus), on bass, and Dale Ketcheson (Music), on guitar, perform at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) at a Happy Hour performance sponsored by the Lethbridge Jazz Society on Apr. 15 from 5-8 p.m. McCarroll's artwork is presently on display at SAAG.

Jazlyn Dow (BFA '10) has just been accepted into the Master of Arts in Visual Culture: Costume Studies program at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

International Management students Kayley Fulton and Aamna Zia have each been awarded a $3,000 Export Development Canada (EDC) International Business Scholarship. Fulton completed a work exchange in Spain in 2010 while Zia, an Edmonton Campus student, is currently on work exchange in France.

Darcy Best (Mathematics and Computer Science) bettered his score from last year to set a new school record for his performance in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. Best joined nearly 4,296 North American students in a six-hour, 12-problem contest, earning an overall ranking score of 527.5, leaving him one point out of the top 500.

Dr. Cade hadn't officially started his term as President. I had a wall of students in front of me, all filling out forms. As Dr. Cade walked by the Registrar's Office, he looked over in my direction, smiled and waved.

I immediately looked behind me, as I thought Leslie or Debi was standing behind me, and he was waving to them. I thought to myself.....he couldn't possibly be waving to me, but he was. That simple gesture made my day!

In past years the Registrar's Office had instituted a photo line-up at convocation. After students came off the dais and had their picture taken, a lot of them were a bit disoriented and would walk off in the wrong direction.

I was positioned at the front to guide them with Mrs. Cade unofficially assisting me in her front row seat by pointing them in the right direction.

The one thing I will always remember about Dr. Cade is his ability to warm up any room with his intellect, passion, energy and friendly Texas drawl. His charismatic qualities and initiatives have opened many doors of opportunity for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will forever benefit from his vision and accomplishments.

The one thing that I will never understand is why Dr Cade would travel half way around the world to study Crickets? I wish Dr. and Elsa Cade the very best of health and happiness in the future.

Bill is a remarkable man who I instantly had a liking for. An engaging individual, I was at ease when we met and always looked forward to speaking with him when I knew we would be at the same events.

A true leader, Bill had the respect of everyone in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and was recognized by his colleagues for his ability. Bill seemed to approach everything as an "adventure".

As Chancellor, I was a member of the search committee which recommended Bill's appointment as President. His warm and vibrant personality, together with the support of Elsa has proven to be a boon to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

One of my first meetings with Bill Cade came within weeks of taking office as mayor when he called on me to live up to a campaign promise.

Throughout the 2001 mayoralty campaign I had promoted the concept of a community-driven economic development model.

Bill and several of his friends made it clear that it was not only a good idea, it was one they expected me to implement forthwith. And with Bill's guidance and support, Economic Development Lethbridge moved from vision to reality.

I was deeply moved at the time that a U of L president should be so engaged in his community. As I was to learn, this was just the first of a series of partnerships between the university and the city that Bill had a hand in creating.

The 1st Choice Savings Wellness Centre and the Community Stadium are two others that come to mind, but there are other important examples.

What kind of president has Bill been? Energetic, charismatic, passionate, considerate, and above all, focused on the needs of students.

Bill and Elsa have played important parts in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge story over the last ten years, but they have also earned the respect and love of people they have come in contact throughout the community. Good luck, my friend!

I have many reasons to thank Bill Cade, but the one that has meant the most to me is the interest and support he has shown for my mother and her work over the years.

My mother is the Yiddish-language writer Chava Rosenfarb. Yiddish and the rich literature and culture associated with it are little known in Alberta.

This is not surprising since the language itself is dying, a victim of the Holocaust. Today there are few speakers and fewer readers.

To have someone promote and encourage the work of a Yiddish writer the way Bill has done is thus truly remarkable and truly praiseworthy.

To date, the U of L is the only university in Canada to have given an honorary degree to a Yiddish writer, despite the fact that Canada has been host to a vibrant Yiddish culture for over a hundred years.

I have no words to express how very moving this is to me and how grateful I am.

There are so many things that I admire about Bill Cade. Right from the first time I met Bill, when he arrived in Lethbridge to begin his position as President of U of L, he stood out for me because of his enthusiasm for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, the city of Lethbridge, people and for life.

First of all thanks for this opportunity to pay tribute to someone I will always consider a friend.

From the first time I shook Bill Cade's hand I felt completely at ease with him.

I do recall thinking "Is that a Texas accent I hear?" Oh yes it was.

Bill's attribute of treating everybody with respect has endeared him to friends and business associates alike. When we met with a number of people in Ottawa promoting the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge he impressed everyone with his passion and demeanour.

The first time I was in his office at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ my questions regarding his collection of crickets quickly led to a lesson on the reproductive machinations of the species.

His interest in how each person at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ contributed to it's success endeared him to people on and off campus.

During one election campaign, I received an invitation to take part in a polar swim fund raiser at Park Lake. When I saw that Bill was on the list of participants, I quickly sent him a pledge and wished him well, to his credit he got the job done without any lingering damage.

I'm not sure how many people know that Bill is a hot rodder at heart and spent time at the drag strip in his day, I promised to take him for a blast in my 1967 GTX, haven't done that yet but will.

Dr. Cade! Make sure you take the time to reflect on what you have meant to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and southern Alberta, how much better the institution and all of us are for having you come to town. I hope you and your wonderful bride continue to enjoy peace and happiness.

I have to admit to becoming a big fan of Bill and Elsa Cade.

Our first meeting was in my office. He insisted on coming to me. How about that!

To me, it was a generous thing to do and indicated his strong character personified by a professional humbleness that I was not used to in my previous interactions with American scholars. When I discovered that he had taken out Canadian citizenship, well then, I was hooked!

Bill's cooperation with Lethbridge College was essential at the time of his arrival and I thank him eternally for it.

Bill Cade was a great President of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. I thank him and Elsa and won't ever forget them.

Bill Cade has what has to be the best memory for names! He can walk into a room and address each person by their correct name and if he is meeting you for the first time, you can bet he will remember it the next time you meet.

I was on a shoot at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre and Bill walked by and said, "Hi Dory…Hi Ted!" Ted, our cameraperson, was completely floored that Bill would remember his name! That is a real gift!"

It has been my pleasure to work with President Bill Cade on a variety of occasions. Always cheerful, always willing to listen, and usually more than willing to help whenever asked and when it was possible to respond at the time.

Over the past 30 years, as Senator, as Chancellor and now as Chancellor Emeritus my experiences working with the current ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ President have been very positive.

What was your first impression of Bill?

I met Bill Cade the first time in an elevator and he was friendly, asking me about my work and role at the university.

The second time I saw him in the hallway he greeted me by name. He did that with everyone he met: learned the faculty, support staff, the cleaners' names... everybody and talked with all of us about our work...

He recognized and called people by name all over the campus.

What do you most admire about Bill?
Savvy leadership, deep academic experience and communication skills with public and with individuals, whatever level they are at.

His forthrightness and efficiency, with an ability to know what is most important and whatever isn't at all. Balance. Respect for his family and Elsa and the positive way he speaks about her. His friendliness and courage to be tough when necessary. High standards. His advocacy for the right to do research, the need for the university to be protected as a liberal arts university, social justice, speaking out for balance of gender and minorities.

What opportunities have you been given during Bill's presidency?
To be on the board of governors, to contribute my views... he has ears to hear, to be part of the university community, to have a women's scholars series, to feel confident in my university's management and leadership skills, to feel I work for a good organization, to feel proud of the importance of teaching.

What was something surprising you discovered about Bill?
He's a good cook and a wine aficionado, he likes dogs, drag racing, and he taught public school.

What made Bill an excellent president?
Knowledge of universities and all his people, the role of a university in the public domain, ability to forge meaningful working relationships, to call bullshit when necessary, practical know-how brought to bear on complex issues, new ideas, openness, dedication to due and fair process.

Arguing for the good of the university behind closed doors with board members, honoring professors' work and students' work. Kindness to people upset by life's difficult circumstances.

I remember very clearly one day approximately 9 years ago when Dr. Cade invited my four-year-old twin boys and myself to come and view his life's work with his crickets.

We started in his office and I learned firsthand what patience he had. My boys were touching all of his irreplaceable objects in his office without any scared shrieking from Dr. Cade. In fact, he encouraged them.

Once we had viewed his office, we were taken down to the 4th Floor to see his lab. You can imagine the excitement of four year old boys to see a room filled with crickets.

They were fascinated as Dr. Cade showed them the crickets at various stages of growth. At one point, one of the cages with the babies tipped over and my boys were scrambling to save their lives.

As Dr. Cade talked about all the interesting facts regarding the crickets, he had two boys hugging him and continually asking questions.

It was a very unique experience, one that I know we will never forget. Dr. Cade, thank you for your patience and kindness shown to my children.

I find Bill Cade very personable. When I said, "hello Dr. Cade", he responded, "just call me Bill!" He's always gone out of his way to say "hi" to me and shake my hand.

I recall a time I was coming back from lunch, Bill was walking down the hall with the Education Minister and other senior officials. He stopped to say hello and introduced me to the others. I was shocked and in awe that he would take time out of his busy schedule for me!

When Bill Cade first came to our campus as the new President, I was the president of the AUPE local here on campus and our executive was one of the groups he met with to discuss concerns, share ideas, etc.

Being personable as he was, he also asked about our families and lives outside work. One of the things that I shared with him was that my husband was an alum and my son was a current student, majoring in philosophy.

Weeks later, I was with my family at a local restaurant when Bill walked in. He immediately came over to our table, shaking my son and husband's hands, calling them by their first names and relating what I had told him about their time at the university.

We were amazed that, considering all the people he was meeting in his introduction to the U of L, he would remember these details about us. But that's Bill – people matter to him.

I organized a luncheon for a visiting Chinese delegation that Bill attended. Roast beef was served along with a side of horseradish -- and the dish of horseradish was placed with the starting salad at every seat during the meal.

Bill is very charismatic and of course was the focus of our luncheon.

As we started the meal, he picked up his dish of horseradish and poured it all over his salad (thinking it was salad dressing).

Before we knew it, every visitor from China was doing the same!

In the following moments, everyone was digging into their salads and not understanding our instructions of "it's for the beef".

Garden salad is not served in China and with the horseradish it must have been an unusual culinary experience for our guests but a great story for us!"

"Five years ago, when I was being recruited for the Presidency of Lethbridge College, I did lots of research on the institution and the community. When I found out that Dr. Bill Cade was a fellow Longhorn (we're both graduates of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Texas at Austin) I gave him a call to find out his perspective on Lethbridge as well as his impression of the relationship between the U of L and Lethbridge College.

I remember I was between flights somewhere in the US and Bill spent thirty or forty minutes with me on the phone, answering my questions and providing his insights. He also directed me to a U of L student who had transferred over from the College who also was very helpful in providing further information.

Bill and I have been breakfasting regularly since my arrival in Lethbridge. Our biggest challenge is always around remembering whose turn it is to pay. (smile)

Aside from the many transfer arrangements that were already in place, during Bill's tenure Lethbridge College now delivers the first two years of the U of L's Nursing Degree. We are also collaborating on a post-degree program to fast-track new nurses into the workplace. There are other opportunities in discussion as the two Lethbridge institutions look at how best to serve our students.

I have very much enjoyed working with Bill. . . he is a colleague and a friend. I hope we'll still have a chance to catch up over a meal as he continues with his teaching and research at the university. Conversely, I would be happy to visit him in San Antonio. . . perhaps we could take in a football game at UT. Hook 'em, Horns!

"The most memorable thing I remember about Bill Cade (and I have told this story many many times) is that he was here in our office prior to his July 1 start date to meet with Leslie. He spoke to me for perhaps 1 to 2 minutes.

Weeks later, I received a telephone call and picked up the phone answering Good Morning, Registrar's Office and this Texas drawl came back, "Is that you Linda?"

I almost fell off my chair. He met and spoke to many on campus that week he stopped by here and he remembered my name after a two minute conversation! That just blew me away. His incredible memory is an excellent quality and I think he has had a profound impact on those he met which has served the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ well.

When I first met Bill Cade, he made me laugh by 'joking' with me about how uncomfortable he was with all things medical in nature and how he avoided medical issues.

But I began to realize that he must have unknowingly started "Bill's Medical Curse" because suddenly all kinds of large-scale health concerns began affecting the entire university.

Starting with SARS scare/concern in 2003, we had large-scale communicable disease outbreaks of meningitis, mumps, H1N1, norovirus, as well as the other more typical viruses such as HPV, mononucleosis and strep.

We had public health scares with avian flu worries and measles concerns. Of course, then Bill changed his mind about us medical personnel when he had a bit of a health scare himself a few years back and maybe that helped to 'lift the curse'. My best wishes to Bill and his lovely wife Elsa for a HEALTHY and happy retirement!

"After the election of 2008, I had the opportunity to meet with Bill Cade at the Legislature in Edmonton. Bill , Bob Turner, and myself sat down for a coffee and a quick chat in the cafeteria, the quick chat turned into a full half hour of visiting like we were old friends.

Bill is a very sincere welcoming man, who converses easily and comfortably with people from all walks of life. Prior to that first meeting I remember thinking to myself that it was going to be an awkward meeting, with not a lot of common issues between us, to discuss outside of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, but thankfully I was wrong.

I have been lucky enough to have had many meetings and discussions over the past 2 years, and always the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and Education was Bill's priority.

When I mentioned that my daughter had started her first year at Uof L , Bill encouraged me to have her give him a call and stop by for a visit sometime.

For a few months she procrastinated thinking that he would be too busy and was not really serious. Finally when she did make an appointment to visit Bill, she found that he was not only the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ President, but more over he was a friend, a friend from a different walk of life, a friend from a different generation, but someone who made every effort to be a friend.

The world would be a better place if more people were like Bill Cade.

Bill Cade is one of that rare breed who truly understand all of the roles they're expected to play in their position. He's equal parts academic, administrator, scientist and statesman.

Although I do not have a long history of knowing Bill and I do not have any specific story to share I do want to acknowledge that he was one of the main reasons I have reengaged with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge after 18 years.

When I first met Bill Cade in my office in Calgary it was shortly after becoming a donor of the Markin Hall project.

We were discussing the progress and development of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and the current projects being undertaken.

As I listened to Bill speak I could feel his passion and excitement for what he was building.

He believed in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, he believed the people working at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, and he believed in the difference he was making for the students.

He asked me to become involved with the Advancement Committee and I decided immediately, knowing, that he is a man of action and really does make things happen.

He smiled when I asked him if committee work and my involvement would actually get results - he said - "We want individuals involved with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ that will make a difference".

So, what I am really saying is he is the reason an Alum like myself is involved with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Bill's leadership will no doubt be a loss to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, however, his vision will be carried on by the next generation.

I wish Bill and Elsa all the best in the future and I look forward to his life updates in the future.

I am not sure if I am too late with this but I would like to mention the first tour I went on after a senate meeting of the theater. I made a casual comment to Bill about recruitment for the university while on the tour. By Monday he had John Kincaid in contact with me to follow up on the comment! He doesn't miss a thing!

Also I am not sure you were there when he told the story of the streaker in the new stadium....after an enthusiastic monologue of the young man's escapade, without cracking a smile with his deep Texas accent, he said, "of course my official stance is I am shocked and appalled"". Most of us were nearly in tears laughing by this point.

I am sure you ave lots of things submitted but these are two things I remember that endear him to many.

I recall a story told by Bill in his earlier years at the U of L. He arrived at the Coutts border with a collection of insects The Immigration person asked Bill to explain why he was bringing insects into Canada from the USA.

Bill got pissed off and asked if it would be better if he just let all the insects escape. This irked the border patrol person who insisted that Bill would have to wait until an expert academic was called to the border from Calgary to vouch that the insects would not harm Canadians.

This caused Bill to have to wait more than three hours for another academic to vouch for the insects and for Bill, who was and is a first class entymologist.

Insult was added to injury when the entylologist from Calgary signed the form presented to her without even examining the insects.

Not the best WELCOME TO CANADA that Bill ever received. I found it as amusing as Bill latterly did.

Our first meeting was on the diocese for convocation where we shared a rare first impression when he sincerely turned to me and chuckled at a joke.

Fowler earns Distinguished Teaching Award

For someone who resisted being a teacher for so long and admits trying to get away from the profession on occasion, Dr. Leah Fowler is remarkably gifted at what she does. Then again, maybe it's her honesty and humility that allows her to see teaching for all that it is, and therefore drives her to excel.

"I didn't ever want to be a teacher, I'm still puzzled that I'm here, this is not where I imagined I would be," says Fowler, who first planned a career in medicine.

But she is here and she's one of the best professors the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has to offer, earning the 2009 Distinguished Teaching Award, which will be presented at the spring convocation ceremonies.

"For me, this award means that good teaching matters, and it's an honour to stand in for good teaching," says Fowler. "I'm just here as a representative for good teaching."

Her 12 years in the Faculty of Education have been marked by her thoughtful, knowledgeable and creative approach.

With a unique teaching style, she strives to create a classroom that is informal but intellectually stimulating and challenging. Employing a personal approach, Fowler extends herself to her students as she looks to develop a safe learning environment.

"I think if you can help people feel comfortable and have what they need then they'll press boundaries more, they'll take more risks because they have more courage," she says.

"I learn my students' names, I learn their narratives and I learn their needs. I find out what they're good at and then try and develop the things they're not so comfortable with so that they have a wide range of breadth and depth in their subject areas."

Fowler is the first to admit she doesn't have all the answers, and pushes the message that teaching is not about the teacher, rather it is about the student.

"I want it to be about possibility, and it's not about me at all, it's always about the student. Why are they here, what do they need and how are they going to get further?" she asks.

"I'm not the centre of the universe and neither is the student but somewhere in the middle we meet. What gets learned happens in that third space between the professor and the teacher. The interesting space is that middle ground in between. I stop halfway and hopefully make invitation for students to come the other half to meet me – it's not about me telling."

Fowler came late to teaching, having dabbled in trades as diverse as driver training instructor to recreational therapist to the owner of a house painting business. She's brutally honest when discussing teaching, accepting it for all its challenges and gaining a real-world perspective that resonates with her students.

"I've hated teaching, I've quit teaching three times," admits Fowler. "It takes all your heart and all your breath, and if you're in it, you're in it."

She currently teaches graduate students and pre-service teachers, spending much time supervising education students in practica. Her research interests delve into the difficulties of teaching and she has three books in the works as a result.

A winner of a 1992 Province of Alberta Teaching Excellence Award while she was still a high school teacher, Fowler continues to revel in the moments when she can see her lessons hit home.

"I always watch students' eyes for insight and I love that," she says. "They just get that quiet little grin and raise their eyebrows and you know they've hit on something. It happens enough, and often in an unexpected place, but that's the thing I'm always asking: Am I connecting? Are they engaged? I'm always looking for that."

As I approach the final weeks of my tenure as President of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, it's hard not to reflect on my 10 years here in southern Alberta and more specifically, on the many remarkable people I have met over that time.

Dr. Jane O'Dea is one of those people and it is both ironic and fitting that we would begin our positions on the same day, 10 years ago, and will now be leaving these positions on the same day at the end of June.

As the new Dean of the Faculty of Education, Jane had already been at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for 10 years when she began her role. I was coming in from the outside and was fortunate to have Jane, among others, as a valuable resource to help learn about the U of L community.

Jane was very generous in her time to me early on, and I remember fondly accompanying her on my first visit to the Blood Reserve and Red Crow Community College. That was just the beginning of the Niitsitapi Teacher Education program, one that she supported, built and encouraged her colleagues to work on diligently.

Congratulations Madam Dean on all that you were able to accomplish during your term, and I know we will continue to see great things from you in the future.

The spring is a time for congratulations as we honour the many people who make the U of L such an exceptional place to work and study. Dr. Leah Fowler, this year's Distinguished Teacher, is to be commended for her wonderful work in the Faculty of Education, as is
Dr. Dave Morris, the Ingrid Speaker Medal recipient.

Dr. Fowler will be honoured at Spring Convocation while Dr. Morris will be recognized at the fall event.

I also want to make particular mention of the President's Award winners, Cal Toth from the Curriculum Re-Development Centre, Kim Fowler from Housing Services and the Major Building Construction Team from Facilities. This team is led by Brian Sullivan and includes Bill Hudgins, Jason Baranec, John Federkeil, Will Tietz, Dan Sullivan, Jim Vanderzee, Rick Baceda and Al Mueller. I am satisfied especially that these awards have recognized such a distinguished group over the years.

Now that the Michael Nolan campaign has concluded, I want to say a special thank you to Vice-President Advancement Chris Horbachewski for initiating what was the most satisfying fundraising experience with which I have ever been associated. It was a wonderful success, both in terms of money raised for student scholarships and the great amount of fun we had with the project.

I was very happy that a student, Joshua Og, won Michael Nolan, and I've heard that he has been putting the car to good use since he took ownership. My only advice to him, other than to enjoy the car and treat it well, was to never change its name.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Farewell Fiesta in May, where I can
express my gratitude personally to all of you for how wonderful you have made my time here at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Lastly, I will be presiding over my final convocation ceremonies next month, and I urge everyone to take some time to attend one of the four ceremonies. It's an excellent way to reaffirm why we work so hard to make the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ all that it is for our students.

O'Dea's contribution to Education a lasting legacy

Finding a way to coax Dr. Jane O'Dea to talk about herself as she reflects on 10 years as dean of the Faculty of Education is a lesson in futility. Only within the context of describing the faculty's achievements will she discuss her stewardship, and even then, she'll deflect credit away from the individual to that of the collective.

"It's not so much what I've achieved over the last 10 years, rather it's what we've all achieved together," says O'Dea, who will step away from the role of dean at the end of June and return to the faculty ranks, where she started at the U of L 20 years ago.

"I'm tremendously proud of the things we've accomplished because they were achievements that involved every single faculty member and all of our support staff."

Recognizing she was inheriting a faculty with a long and proud tradition, and balancing that with a need to create new and innovative programming that would reflect emerging educational challenges was a juggling act that O'Dea mastered.

"I was tremendously fortunate to become dean of a faculty that has a fabulous tradition of collaboration and partnership with the professional community," she says of the faculty relationship with Alberta Education's Zone 6 schools and teachers. "That isn't something I brought about, that's something the founding members of the faculty created. It was my privilege to come in both as a faculty member and later as dean, become familiar with those structures, realize how important they were and then use that as a foundation to work with our faculty in moving forward."

One of the great legacies of O'Dea's leadership is the establishment of First Nations programming, specifically through the creation of the Niitsitapi Teacher Education and the First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) graduate programs.

"She made First Nations education one of the priorities of her deanship," says Education faculty member Dr. Cathy Campbell. "She succeeded in developing relationships with the Blackfoot speaking nations, initiating collaborative work and programming with Red Crow College, and bringing issues in First Nations education to the forefront of discussions at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and in the province."

Dr. Leah Fowler echoes that assessment, saying O'Dea personifies the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's ideals of accessible education.

"With the Niitsitapi teacher education cohort, and the current masters' cohort, she opened wide the door at the Faculty of Education to restorative education for First Nations, Metis and Inuit students," says Fowler. "That has meant that we all have positively revisited education practice and teacher preparation."

Her personable approach is highly respected by her peers, but O'Dea gives credit to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for fostering an atmosphere that embraces one-on-one learning.

"One of the things that really impressed me when I first came here was I felt this was a place where they really care about students," says O'Dea. "Here you're not just a number, you actually matter, and people care about the instruction you get. I think that is absolutely tremendous. I have always loved this place."

She speaks glowingly of the collaborative nature of her faculty, crediting their willingness to work collectively in developing niche graduate offerings such as literacy, information technology leadership and inclusive education and neuroscience topics.

"These special niche structures are really quite extraordinary but they take an incredible amount of work, time and administrative finesse," says O'Dea. "I am extremely fortunate to have amazing people working in the offices here and faculty members willing to try out these new programs all the time."

She also trumpets the research portfolio the faculty has developed over her tenure.

"It's a challenge to maintain a proper balance between graduate and undergraduate teaching, all the while factoring in quality time for research," says O'Dea. "That is by no means easy to achieve but it is essential.

"We know what draws students to us is the quality of our programs, and we can't afford to just go down the research route and ignore teaching. On the other hand, to simply concentrate on teaching is to become more like a college and we're not that, we're part of the comprehensive ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and proud to be so."

• O'Dea's undergraduate degree is in music and she is an accomplished recital piano player. "There's one recital that I haven't done that I'd really like to do and when I get time to practice I think I might like to go back and do that. I won't share that yet, I'm just playing with it right now."

• O'Dea is excited about the opportunity to teach again, saying, "I have a lot of ideas for interesting courses both at the graduate and undergraduate level that I think would be of real interest to students today."

• Despite stepping away from the dean's position, O'Dea has no plans to leave the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. "Absolutely not, I think this is a tremendous ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. I love its size, I love its entrepreneurial innovative spirit, and its emphasis on community and student engagement."

Fowler earns Distinguished Teaching Award

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is proud to bestow the Distinguished Teaching Award upon Dr. Leah Fowler, for her inspiring teaching sustained over a 12-year career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Her award will be presented at the Spring, 2009 Convocation ceremonies, which take place June 3 and 4 at the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness.

Leah Fowler is a thoughtful, knowledgeable, and creative teacher, informed by years of successful teaching in public schools and at the university level.

A professor in the Faculty of Education, Leah Fowler teaches graduate students and pre-service teachers, supervises education students in practica, and conducts research in education.

Fowler's success as a teacher is based on the uniqueness of her teaching style, making teaching relevant to students' lives, and basing curriculum on students' learning needs. She strives to create a classroom that is informal but intellectually stimulating and challenging, in an atmosphere of respect, humour and personal interest, with a rich depth and breadth of materials.

She views the classroom as a place to push the boundaries of knowledge, discourse and abilities, to develop meaning, and to connect thought with action.

Former students comment that Fowler's teaching has prepared them for success in their own teaching careers.

One particularly valuable aspect is Fowler's focus on "the curriculum of difficulty," which refers to the realities of education and the obstacles fledgling teachers may face in the classroom. She models what it means to be an exemplary teacher and mentor to beginning teachers and colleagues alike.
