Pomahac made indelible impression

On Monday, October 1, 2012, Dr. Anthony "Tony" Pomahac passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital.

A memorial was held at Martin Bros Funeral home on Oct. 9 with his wife Hazel and family and friends in attendance.

Pomahac was the father of Andrea Glover in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Library and also had another close connection to the U of L, as he was one of the founding physicians at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Health Centre.

"I have very fond memories of Dr. Pomahac," says Lori Weber, manager of the Health Centre. "He loved being a physician and worked here from 1969 until his retirement a few years ago. Like many of the physicians at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Health Centre who take time from their other clinics to see students and assist with their medical concerns, Dr. Pomahac believed in the education and medical care of young adults as they become our future workforce."

Pomahac was part of the growth of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Health Centre from a small facility that saw just a few clients a day to its current state, where thousands of students can be seen in a month for not only physician clinics, but also psychiatric care, massage therapy, chiropractor, health education, first aid and communicable disease issues.

Chris Moroz, clinic administrator, says that Pomahac left a lasting impression on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community.

"Anyone who ever met Dr. Pomahac never forgot him, he was a larger than life character."

Indeed, those who knew Pomahac will miss his big booming voice, his sense of humour and his skilled medical care to several generations of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ students. For a full obituary and to send condolences, please contact Martin Bros Funeral Chapel.

Learning the truth about heart disease

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women in Canada and the United States.

The various forms of heart disease include coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart failure and heart attacks. Heart disease accounts for 35,000 deaths per year among women in Canada, and of these deaths, 54 per cent were due to ischemic heart disease, 20 per cent due to stroke, and 23 per cent due to myocardial infarction (heart attacks).

These are sobering statistics that deserve our attention.

So, exactly what is heart disease?

Your heart is a muscle that gets energy from blood carrying oxygen and nutrients. Having a constant supply of blood keeps your heart working properly. Most people think of heart disease as one condition. In fact, heart disease is a group of conditions affecting the structure and functions of the heart and has many root causes.

The positive is that heart disease is both preventable and manageable. While you cannot control your age, gender, ethnicity and family history, risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and being overweight are all readily modifiable.

If you'd like to find out more about your risk of heart disease, register for this semester's Health Check for U session, a 15-minute confidential free screening program. It includes cholesterol and blood sugar level checks, blood pressure, height, weight and waist circumference measurements and a follow-up consultation.

Check out your heart's age – take charge of your health and put your Heart into it! To register send an e-mail to wellness@uleth.ca. Past participants are welcome to come back for a second or third screening to see if there have been any changes.

In other Wellness news, mini-massages are available through March, as provided by Lethbridge College Massage Therapy students. Drop in for a 10 to 15 minute massage or register at wellness@uleth.ca. The next session is Feb. 27, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in AH117.

The February Wellness Lunch and Learn session is Thursday, Feb. 16 at 12:05 p.m. in AH100. 3 Secrets to Stress Management will feature a presentation from chiropractor Dr. Pierre Gaulin.

Health Centre now open for clinics

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Health Centre is offering a pair of clinics in advance of opening for full-time services beginning Sept. 7.

Two clinics, Tuesday, Aug. 24 and Tuesday, Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, kick off the fall semester. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7, the Health Centre will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Located in the Students' Union Building (SU020, 403-329-2484), the Health Centre offers a variety of services to students, staff or faculty of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Following is a brief summary of the many services offered.

Physician clinics – we can do annual physicals for both men and women, STI testing, birth control options and prescription renewal.

Dietitian services – If you have any specific dietary concerns or needs, Diane Britton RD is here in the Health Centre to assist you.

Psychiatrist services – Those having difficulty coping in this new environment or who have issues that are already being treated; counselling services or one of the staff doctors can assist with these needs and refer to our on-campus psychiatrist if necessary.

Chiropractor services – Dr. Douwer is available every Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning. Please call 403-329-2484 to book an appointment. Charges do apply.

Massage Therapy – Jarvis Larson is available Thursday mornings. Once again, charges do apply.

Nurse Services – If you have health concerns, are in need of information or just want to speak with a nurse, call 403-329-2484 and book an appointment to see either Lori Weber or Dianne Carter.

Life Balance Fair celebrates wellness

Canada's Healthy Workplace Month is scheduled from Oct. 5 to Nov. 1. The 2009 theme is: Healthy Mind, Healthy Body, Healthy Work. Feeling Great About Life!

As individuals and employees, we face a never-ending cycle of stress, which is seen as commonplace in our society. The Wellness Committee at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is using this opportunity to increase employees' awareness of the importance of workplace health to personal and organizational performance.

The Life Balance Fair, Oct. 21, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the track of the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, has been created by the Wellness Committee to help employees find that balance in their personal and professional lives. It is not an either/or proposition, rather, a how much proposition.

The event has a large number of exhibitors – to celebrate all aspects of the theme – mind, body and work. Information on how to keep a healthy mind for you or your family; representatives from the Alzheimer's Society; what to do in case of emergency; and how to enhance your financial situation, are just a few of the topics exhibitors will address.

As well, representatives for treatment and therapy providers, including physiotherapy, chiropractor, massage, acupuncture, sleep and health information will all be available.

The Lethbridge and District Horticultural Society, the Campus Community Garden and Lethbridge Recreation and Leisure Services will also be present as we recognize these activities provide some balance to individuals' lives.

Creating and maintaining a healthy workplace will feature exhibits from U of L Risk and Safety Services, and benefits departments, the kinesiology department, WCB, and St. John's Ambulance.

There will also be ongoing demos of dancing, yoga and other fitness activities throughout the afternoon. And if you've never had the opportunity to try out the gym, there are free tours of the fitness centre.

Everything is designed to be interactive and there will be draw prizes for those who complete a Life Balance Fair passport. Prizes include a Wii Fit Sports Resort game. Open to all staff and faculty, a light lunch will also be available during the fair.

Summer semester at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge sees many services close down but the U of L Health Centre will remain open.
Physician services throughout the summer will feature reduced hours, while nurse services will remain available until July 14. If the doors to the Health Centre are closed when you visit, don't hesitate to call 403-329-2484.
As well massage therapy sessions continue every Tuesday morning until June 23. For appointments, call 403-329-2484 or drop by the Health Centre at SU020.
Chiropractor services are available at the off-campus office. Call 403-329-0922 to book an appointment.
Dietitian services continue Monday through Thursday mornings until May 14.
