A quartet of guards and reserve post remain with the program and will be led by seniors Morgan Duce, Logan Reiter and Alex Fletcher.

Reiter and Duce both averaged double digit points per game last season and will be counted on heavily to increase their scoring totals after the departure of the top two scorers from last season in Derek Waldner and Julian Spear Chief-Morris.

Among the nine newcomers to the program, Australian Brandon Brine, as well as ACAC all-stars Rob Olsen and Jared Baker, are expected to make a significant impact in their first season with the program. Post Brent Watkins could be a wildcard contributor for the Horns after transferring from Citrus College in California. Watkins, who did not play high school basketball, comes to the Horns with raw talent and will be relied on to be a presence in the paint. In his second season with Citrus last year, Watkins averaged 9.2 points and 7 rebounds per game while hitting nearly 75% of his shots from the field.

For a full weekend preview, visit gohorns.ca.

Pronghorn Women

Despite missing the playoffs for the third season in a row, there were a lot of positives to take away from the 2012-13 season.

In her first season at the helm of the Pronghorns women’s basketball program, Erin McAleenan led the Horns to their first double digit win total since the 1994-95 season, but a duplication of the 2012-13 season will be a tough task for the Pronghorns in the always tough Canada West conference.

The Horns will open the 2013-14 conference schedule this weekend on the road traveling to British Columbia to face the Fraser Valley Cascades and Trinity Western Spartans.

Gone from last season are post Erin Skippon, forward Steph Inman and utility guard Kara Henry. While Skippon was only with the program for one season, her leadership and post presence will be dearly missed.

While the voids left will be hard to fill, the Pronghorns return their top two scorers from last season in Ali Cameron and post Kim Veldman. Cameron, a pure scorer, returns for her fourth season and will look to build off her career best 15 points per game average last season.

Veldman, who averaged nearly a double-double last season, will be leaned on heavily at both ends of the floor, while senior guard Katlyn Olsen will also be counted on to help lead the young squad. With six true freshmen cracking the Pronghorns roster, there will be some growing pains along the way.

Southern Alberta product Mariah Miller has had a nice start to her collegiate career, recording a double-double in only her third preseason game.

Guards Erin James, Sara Simovic and Kendra Lee will all see significant time as freshmen and will need to make significant contributions if the Horns are going to duplicate last season’s record.

Tip-off for Friday’s game versus the Cascades is set for 6 p.m. PST, while Saturday’s game versus the Spartans will go at 5 p.m.. Both games will be streamed live on http://canadawest.tv

For more, visit gohorns.ca.

Suzanne Lenon

Dr. Suzanne Lenon (Women and Gender Studies), whose research interests are in the area of law, gender and sexuality, will receive $5,000 to further her research on the complex relationships between gender equality and the recognition of valid foreign polygamous marriages.

Ann Ã…sfrid Holden, graduate studies Master of Arts candidate in History, takes her research into the Subarctic and Arctic to compare legal policies that affect first Nations and Inuit people in Northern Quebec, and those of the Sami people of her home country of Norway. Both groups were affected by large-scale hydroelectric power developments that changed their land and lifestyles, and the legality of the expropriation of indigenous land for these developments was questionable. She will also receive $5,000 to further her studies.

“Parkland is excited to be able to support the diverse research represented by Dr. Suzanne Lenon and Ann Holden,” said Dr. Trevor Harrison, a U of L sociology researcher and Director of the Parkland Institute.

“Parkland’s emphasis has been, and remains, on research that is academically sound, that is important to the broad public and that dares to push the boundaries of our understanding. Both of these research projects fit that bill.”

Harrison added that though they are very different, both projects deal with legal issues and social policy.

“Dr. Lenon’s work will contribute to the body of knowledge that deals with immigration, polygamy, and gender equality, and how those concepts are intertwined, in an often confusing way, from a policy perspective. Ann Holden’s work will explore and explain how the respective legal systems of Norway and Canada have framed the implementation of hydroelectric projects on indigenous land. Though they are far apart geographically, there are some striking similarities that both parties could gain from knowing more about.”

SUZANNE LENON

In Lenon’s case, she is using the recent (2011) Polygamy Reference case in British Columbia as a springboard for discussion, which upholds the prohibition of polygamy in Canada as constitutionally sound. “As in the United States, polygamy is illegal in Canada, but people often immigrate to Canada from a number of countries in Africa and the Middle East where polygamous relationships are, in fact, legal,” Lenon said.

Lenon said that one of the reasons for the continued criminalization polygamous marriages in Canada (and in the West) is that of gender equality.

“The second spouse cannot be legally acknowledged, and has very few, if any, rights if the relationship breaks down. The same challenges apply to people in Canadian polygamous relationships in communities such as Bountiful, BC, where the law applies to the individual who is considered to be legally married, but not to other polygamous spouses. While this law is upheld in the name of gender equality, in these cases the law prevents women from being legally supported if there are problems, and this, ironically, has created gender inequality.”

There is, she says, vigorous debate as to whether continued criminalization of polygamous marriage is a viable public policy strategy to address the complex issues arising from it.

ANN HOLDEN

Holden’s work involves a topic that is just as complex, involves a number of inequality elements, and has affected people -- but in a different way.

The development of hyropower projects in both Norway and Canada a few decades ago and 1980scaused more grief for the politicians than they would have expected, because the negative reactions to it was so strong. Both the James Bay Cree, a fishing, hunting, and trapping community in eastern James Bay in Canada, and the reindeer-farming Sami people in Finnmark, Northern Norway argued that they had rights that stemmed from their immemorial usage of the land.

“Historically, land ownership, in the Western meaning of the word, was a foreign concept for both the Sami and the James Bay Cree,” Holden said. “The Norwegian and British legal systems suited a farming culture, and private ownership over land was the most common form of a legal connection to land, although not the only form of legal rights to land. When the Scandinavian legal traditions met the Sami traditions and the James Bay Cree met the English and later French traditions, the needs of both communities were written into the laws - but not equally.”

Holden said that her work will help Indigenous groups learn more about how the laws of land ownership -- and land management -- can apply to current issues where land is disputed, in particular in cases that involve oil, gas and mining exploration in the northern areas of several Canadian provinces and Territories, and also in northern Sweden, where similar activities are taking place.

“In Canada, resource extraction (i.e. mining) on indigenous land happens in several Provinces. In Sweden, civil disobedience that mirrors the actions the Norwegian Sami used in the 1970s and 1980s was used as a tool to put a mining project on traditional Sami reindeer herding ground on the political agenda. These events are taking place right now, and have significant parallels to the challenges I am looking at which took place decades ago. The historical context is important to understand current issues because changes to the law in both the cases I study were consistent with legal traditions in Canada and Norway.”

Ultimately for Harrison, funding projects that stimulate not only public conversation but social change -- and that allow researchers to explore topics of public interest -- is what makes him happy as a researcher and as a representative of the Parkland Institute.

“This is the second year that the Parkland Institute has partnered with the U of L to deliver the scholarships. I want to thank the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge for its tremendous support given to Parkland, in particular for making the awards possible.”

The project period is two years, and the researchers are expected to deliver a final report on their work to the Parkland Institute, which will make their findings public.

Contacts:

Dr. Suzanne Lenon, Women and And while the stories of their post Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge lives took divergent routes, the former roommates shared a sense of discovery and willingness for adventure that eventually led them back together – in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Schilling's story began with a move away from Lethbridge shortly after graduating with a bachelor of education degree in spring 1992. Quickly finding work as a teacher, she spent the next 11 years of her life teaching high school business education, English and computer science in Dawson Creek, Courtenay and Vancouver, B.C. schools.

"In 2003, I was somewhat disillusioned with how things were with George Bush Jr. and the leadership of the United States and truly disillusioned with how little money I could use to travel on a B.C. teacher's salary that I decided to give international education a try," says Schilling.

Gloria Irani-Patterson, left, and Robyn Schilling reconnected in South Africa, 19 years after being roommates while studying at the U of L.

After attending a job fair for international educational opportunities, she accepted a position at the American School of Bombay in Mumbai, India. For the next five years, Schilling taught computer science and implemented a one-to-one program for middle school students. She also worked towards her master's degree in educational leadership, attending The College of New Jersey's global graduate program for three summers in Mallorca, Spain.

Having worked her way up to become associate principal of the middle and high school, Schilling, with her master's degree in hand, was ready for another challenge and turned her gaze to South Africa.

In the meantime, Irani-Patterson had completed her bachelor's degree in English and entered the world of journalism. She finished a Cinema, Television, Stage and Radio Arts diploma at Calgary's Southern Alberta Institute for Technology and took up a position with CBC Newsworld-Calgary.

"After that, I worked for a couple flagship live television shows on ACCESS-The Education Station in Edmonton before I decided to go overseas for a year and tour Asia and the Caribbean," says Irani-Patterson.

In 1998, she returned to Canada and tackled a new challenge, finding work at a diamond mine in Canada's north. It was there she met here future husband and six years later, with a family started, the couple moved to Suriname, South America.

Two moves later (including a stint in Houston, Tex.), Irani-Patterson found herself walking down the tiled hallway of the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ), wondering if South Africa was the right fit for her family.

"I was unsure of so many things," she says. "Are the kids going to be OK here? Am I going to be OK here? And then a thunderbolt of certainty hit me straight between the eyes. From behind me I heard a voice that I will never forget – Robyn Schilling – my roommate from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, now the middle school principal of AISJ."

It wasn't long before Irani-Patterson was ending her 10-year role as a stay-at-home mom and back in the workforce, alongside Schilling as the school's assistant to the activities coordinator.

Their relationship picked up virtually where it left off some 19 years previous, the shared experiences of their Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge education having inspired the duo to boldly branch out and find their respective paths, all the while bringing them back together with an unbroken bond.

"Although it is still unclear to me why our paths have crossed again," says Irani-Patterson, "reuniting with Robyn has taught me that even though the world around me changes, and I embrace that change, the relationship I began with Robyn at the U of L is a familiar and comfortable beacon in my changing world."

This story first appeared in the June 2013 edition of the Legend. student Megan Moore.

Moore, a third-year biological sciences student from Picture Butte, Alta., is leaving in mid June for Seoul, South Korea as part of an international program that will educate young people about the Korean War on the 60th anniversary of the end of the conflict.

She is the only Albertan and one of few Canadians on the scholarship trip, which was open to people who are currently post-secondary family members of Korean War veterans.

Moore said she was excited to have the experience because she has the highest respect for the military and its veterans, and wishes to learn more about an activity that had such a profound effect on her family.

"I am very honoured to be chosen to attend this conference, because my knowledge of the Korean War isn't as broad as it should be," she says. "I wish I had spoken more with my grandfather about it, but he was a very private man who didn't generally discuss the topic, and he passed away when I was a young teenager."

Moore's paternal grandfather, Leading Seaman (LSEM1) John Moore, was a veteran of the Korean War and served on the HMCS Crusader battle ship (known as the Train Wrecker for its ability to successfully disable land-based supply trains) from November 16, 1951 until June 5, 1953.

Thankfully, a person who felt more at home on water than land, Moore's grandfather held the position of a "Stocker" in the engine room of the Crusader. He left military service after his Korean War experience, working in several B.C. packing houses and subsequently for Agriculture Canada until he retired. The elder Moore passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of military tradition with his six children, and in the hearts of his numerous grandchildren.

Hosted and supported by the South Korean government's Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Moore will see locations of some of the key points in the conflict, which lasted from 1950 to 1953, including the now famous Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and a memorial to fallen soldiers at Busan.

More than 26,000 Canadians volunteered to serve in the Korean War, and more than 500 perished. Canada's presence continues today through the United Nations peacekeeping process.

Moore is no stranger to military life – in addition to her grandfather, she has aunts, uncles and cousins who have served in various military capacities from World War II to Afghanistan – and, in fact, wishes to pursue a career of her own in the military following graduation.

"As a former member of the 11 Lethbridge Royal Canadian Air Cadets (from 2004 to 2011), I was able to travel, develop leadership skills and gain numerous other experiences. This has led me to the decision to join formally after university, and right now I am leaning toward a career in the medical services," she says.

Moore adds that anything that increases her knowledge of military history and other activities will only help her in the future.

"I am especially grateful to local Korean veteran Don Dahlke and members of the General Stewart Legion for their help and input as I was preparing for the trip.
