The guest speaker for the event was former Pronghorn Dana Mckechnie.

Female Athlete of the Year

In only her first year of eligibility, Kayla Gallagher burst onto the track scene and served notice that she will be a force on the CIS throwing scene for years to come.

At the Canada West Championship meet, the Truro, N.S. native earned two medals, winning her first Canada West weight throw title with a throw of 16.85 metres, nearly a metre further than her closest competitor. She also earned a silver medal in the shot put event. With her gold medal in the weight throw, Gallagher was a first-team Canada West All-Star.

Heading into the CIS Championship meet in Edmonton, Gallagher was ranked fifth in CIS, but a new personal best throw of 18.24 metres earned her the gold medal. explains, drawing experience from her time on the hardcourt. "We need to work together in order to be successful and that means giving of ourselves for the betterment of the group."

Currently the assistant dean of field experience in the U of L's Faculty of Education, Beaudin first started giving back to her university as an undergraduate student.

"I played basketball as a student and in my final year, I took on the role of assistant coach," says Beaudin, who was part of the team that won bronze at nationals one season. "Coaching was harder than playing in lots of ways but it allowed me to give back in a concrete way to something that was important to me."

Dr. Lorraine Beaudin recognizes that not everyone has the opportunity to pursue a university education.

The lesson stuck with her long after the basketball season ended and Beaudin has been a strong supporter of Pronghorns women's basketball ever since.

"My time as a student-athlete at the U of L had a huge impact on my life," says Beaudin, who still keeps in touch with many of her former teammates and stays connected to the program by volunteering at Pronghorns alumni events. "It created opportunities that I simply wouldn't have had otherwise."

She recognizes that not every student is given the same breaks she was.

"We sometimes assume that everyone in Alberta has the chance to earn a university education, but unfortunately that's not the case. My kids have friends who can't afford to go to university," she says, pointing out that many students who are fortunate enough to attend university depend on student loans and part-time jobs to make ends meet.

For Beaudin, these difficulties emphasize the importance of Supporting Our Students (SOS), an annual campaign that brings faculty, staff and retirees together to support student awards.

"It's fantastic that the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community comes together to support this cause," says Beaudin, who is a longtime SOS donor and an enthusiastic volunteer.

While Beaudin shows her support for Pronghorn Athletics, she emphasizes the importance of helping students from all walks of life and encourages all faculty and staff to give to an area that is important to them.

"Together, we are providing support for students who might not be here otherwise. As an educator, I can't think of a better gift than education," says Beaudin, who remains committed to creating opportunities for students both on and off the court.

For more information on SOS or to make your gift today, please visit www.uleth.ca/giving.

This story first appeared in the April 2013 edition of the Legend. It's a point he undoubtedly learned while watching his once vibrant grandfather slowly lose his battle with Parkinson's disease, and one that was driven home while maturing as a young man at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. Now, as he cycles with his three brothers (Sean, Ross and Ryan) across Canada in memory of his late grandfather Neville 'Baha' Munro, he's reminded of that lesson every day.

"I always told my brothers what a supportive, passionate, loyal and aware community Lethbridge was," says the former Pronghorns men's basketball player and native of Comox, B.C. "It's just pretty cool that they are able to experience that first hand now. My experience here at the U of L definitely led me towards doing something like this – to be more socially aware and more conscious of something way beyond myself and something more important than myself."

Biking for Baha was an idea hatched between the brothers years ago. Their grandfather had wanted to cycle across Canada after being diagnosed with Parkinson's at age 60. A special bike was built for him by his eldest son (their uncle) but his declining motor skills never allowed for the trip to take place. In 2003, Baha passed away but his dream lived on.

"The last few years, riding across Canada became a big interest of mine and it became a huge conversation piece between us," says Mackinnon. "We started talking about it but things always seemed to get in the way.

<img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/mackinnon-bros.jpg" alt="Mackinnon brothers" title="The Mackinnon brothers, left to right, include Ryan, Ross, Scott and Sean.

The four brothers have taken up the charge in memory of their late grandfather, Neville 'Baha' Munro.

The crew is currently just entering Alberta and will be making its way through Lethbridge on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday afternoon, they plan to make the trek from Waterton to Lethbridge and the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community is assembling a group of cyclists to join them as they come into the city. People are asked to meet at the U of L's Penny Building in downtown Lethbridge at 4:30 p.m., when the group will head out to the highway and then escort the brothers into town, where they are staying at the Lethbridge Lodge. To estimate numbers for this group, please email jon.doan@uleth.ca to RSVP.

On Wednesday night, a Baha fundraiser will be held beginning at 8:30 p.m. in the Lodge's Cotton Blossom Lounge. It just became a passion for me," says Lafreniere. "I want to have that practical aspect of it in my life, where I'm contributing to an actual cause in the real world."

Under the supervision of Dr. Sameer Deshpande, Lafreniere began her master's research in the spring of 2010; her work revolves around defining the perspectives and subsequent decisions of irrigators in the Cluny, Alberta, area who voted on a 2007 water-rights agreement between Balzac and the Western Irrigation District.

"Social marketing is a process that applies marketing techniques in order to influence behaviours to benefit society," says Lafreniere. "My research . . . would be how to convince irrigators who have more than enough water . . . to give the water that they're not using to other people who do need that water."

Over the next several months, Lafreniere plans to explore a second phase of her research by crafting a marketing campaign based on the findings of her research.

"We're very close with . . . water management organizations in Alberta that want our research and they want to apply it in what they're doing now," she says. "That's kind of the beauty of it; I don't have to convince anybody that it's important."

<div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast
