Ken McInnes named Interim Executive Director, Sport & Recreation Services

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has named human resources professional Ken McInnes as its interim director of Sport and Recreation Services (SRS).

McInnes has been with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for over 25 years in a variety of leadership roles, and will step out of his current position as the Executive Director, Human Resources to work with the SRS team. His focus will be to position Pronghorn Athletics and U of L Sport & Recreation Services programs for the future.

McInnes will begin to implement recommendations from the recently completed review of Sport and Recreation Services programs, which focussed on a new sport delivery model. He will also work with the SRS team on strengthening recreational programs and services.

Additionally, McInnes will focus on consulting and collaborating with partners, supporters and stakeholders of Pronghorn Athletics and Sport & Recreation Services programs to build on past successes and to promote excellence into the future.

In addition to being an experienced human resources leader, McInnes is a former Pronghorn track and field athlete who has competed at the national level in shot put, discus and hammer throw.

McInnes has an MBA from Royal Roads ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and is an alumnus of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge with undergraduate degrees in management and kinesiology.

Information outlet has the right answer

You no doubt have noticed the friendly faces greeting you at the Campus Information Services outlet located directly across from Tim Hortons in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness. This operation, which just recently opened, is yet another initiative from the Recruitment and Retention Project.

To develop the initial operation, Ryan Hall has been seconded as the operational manager in a strategic partnership with Sport & Recreation Services. Campus Information Services (CIS) team members are also members of the U-Crew, a group of students trained by Recruitment and Student Life in way-finding, general service information and conducting campus tours.

"This pool of trained students is an enormous benefit in pulling together a knowledgeable team," says Hall.

Although the majority of inquiries CIS receives have been related to way finding, team members are also equipped to provide Faculty information, general assistance and ID Card information, as well as distribution and pick-up services for departments.

Way finding includes the physical location of spaces on campus, as well as the location of service information on the web; e.g., the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Calendar. Slightly more than half of the inquiries to date are from students, with the other inquiries coming from faculty, staff and the local community.

Other duties for CIS team members include assisting several student service units across campus in developing programs and databases and monitoring the Services for Students web page to ensure all web links are active.

"This is a win-win situation, because it allows our students the opportunity to gain more information about our student services from across campus, then turn around and share that information more broadly," says Hall. "It also gives these units increased and more sustainable service levels and provides much more information to our clients."

When major campus events such as convocation, Horns Athletics, New Student Orientation and the campus open house take place, the CIS outlet space is shared.

Campus Information Services will also co-ordinate the services within the Collaborative Learning Centre located in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall Atrium, along with a support team of service professionals such as Library Peer-Assisted Technology Support Students (PATTS), and the I.T. Solutions Centre staff.

While the operation has only been open a few months, Hall and his team have already accumulated a great deal of information for distribution, and made connections across campus. They are now entering the next phase of implementation by co-ordinating their services for the downtown Penny Building and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Calgary and Edmonton campuses. As well, the creation of a web site is in the planning stages, bringing the information to an online format. The end goal is to provide one central location for the collection and distribution of general ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ information, as well as a meeting place for campus tours.

Campus Information Services operates from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday with reduced hours heading into the holiday period. All inquiries are logged, in order to monitor traffic to adjust the hours of operation to meet client demand. The Campus Information Services team invites everyone to let it know how to better assist in the collection and distribution of information to make the U of L a more welcoming and service-friendly university.

Game day shirts establishing Horns culture

The challenge is on!

As part of the Recruitment and Retention Project (RRP), the Enhancing Community & School Spirit (ECSS) subject matter team is challenging ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ departments, faculty, staff and students to wear Game Day Shirts on the day of our Pronghorn Athletics games.

The ECSS team has partnered with Sport & Recreation Services to develop the initiative, and an initial order of shirts for participating departments has already taken place. ECSS team leaders, Kara Watson and Trevor Flexhaug, say the initiative is designed to foster a greater awareness and promotion of when Horns games are taking place, to engage more faculty, staff and students with Pronghorn Athletics by having them attend games and to increase the pride of wearing our ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge branded clothing.

Horns culture gets a boost from a new campus initiative aimed at engaging the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community.

"It's also about having some fun and challenging departments across campus to see who can promote the Horns' brand the best and increase attendance at the games," says Flexhaug.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Calgary and Edmonton campuses are also invited to participate.

"It's exciting to see an initiative like this take shape," says Sandy Slavin, executive director of Sport & Recreation Services (SRS). "Pronghorn Athletics represents the entire ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and to see widespread support like this is great for the program and will really be noticed by our student-athletes."

Robb Engen, the manager of marketing and promotion for S&RS, is a member of the ECSS team and helped direct the proposal. He says that SRS will provide campus with notice the day prior to every Horns game so that everyone will know when to wear the shirts. Game days are also promoted on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's digital signage system and on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Drive digital screen. A full Pronghorns season schedule is available at gohorns.ca.

The impetus for the initiative comes from a School Spirit Student Survey that was conducted by the ECSS team. The survey indicated that 49 per cent of student respondents (1,017 students responded in total) had never attended a Pronghorn game, 25 per cent indicated there was a need to create more awareness of Horns Athletics on campus and better communication of campus events, while less than 44 per cent of respondents had ever worn U of L branded clothing.

This is just the initial stage of the Game Day Shirts project, with the campus departments that most interact with our students invited to participate.

Watch for further promotion of Game Day Shirts (they'll be available at the Horns Athletics Office, PE210, later this month) and upcoming staff, faculty and department opportunities to get involved.

Open hours at Community Stadium

The new Community Sports Stadium is the latest jewel on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus and it's open for use by the southern Alberta community.

From now through July 28, Sport & Recreation Services is offering open hours on Monday and Wednesday evenings. The stadium will be open to the community on these evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. A one-day fee or membership is required to take advantage of this opportunity.

More options available at U of L fitness centre

Fitness classes are an integral part of any fitness centre, and the classes at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge are no exception.

Currently there are over 30 fitness programs that are offered through Sport & Recreation Services, and the demand for more continues to grow. Classes currently offered range from Athletic Boot Camp to Goddess Appeal to Pilaga and Yoga. Most of the fitness classes offered by Sport & Recreation Services are registration based due to space availability and popularity and require a fee.

When I first started as fitness centre supervisor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, there were only five drop-in fitness classes available. After getting settled, and reviewing all that we were offering, it was clear we needed more. The demand was there and we had the resources to add to our schedule. The only question was did we have the space?

When planning for new programs, I take into consideration two key factors – space availability and instructor availability. The 1st Choice Saving Centre for Sport & Wellness is a busy facility filled with many different programs, and finding the space to run new programs is often a challenge. Luckily there were some options, and more drop-in classes have been added to the winter session.

We now offer 10 regular drop-in classes that are available to all members. These classes are now offered daily throughout the workweek, both in the morning and at noon. This allows more options for both students, staff and faculty members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Along with increasing the number of drop-in classes, we have also added additional registration programs – including a Fit & Flex Stretch class and a Fit-4-Two Prenatal Fitness class.

The fitness industry is constantly developing and changing, and I will continue to research current demands so that we can continue to offer top quality programs for our members.
