Former National Hockey League goaltender and Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Kelly Hrudey will headline the 7th Annual Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gymnasium.

“To be able to have Kelly Hrudey come in as our guest speaker, just as we are gearing up to host the U Sports ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Cup Men’s National Hockey Championship, is a perfect fit,” says Robb Engen, manager of Development & Marketing, Pronghorn Athletics. “Kelly is respected for an outstanding playing career and as one of the best on-air personalities in the game.”

The Pronghorn Breakfast has raised more than $289,000 in support of Pronghorn Athletics programs. As part of its ongoing commitment to athletics, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will once again match $100 per ticket, with the funds going directly to the teams.

“Canada West just may be the most competitive conference in the country and in order for our programs to compete, we need to attract the best athletes,” says Ken McInnes (BA’91, BMgt’97, Mgt Certificate ’02), executive director, Sport & Recreation Services. “Through events such as these we are able to offer scholarship packages that bring the best student-athletes to the U of L and create a culture that allows them to succeed both academically and in the athletic arena.”

Hrudey, originally from Edmonton, is well known to southern Alberta hockey fans. He played junior hockey with the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers for three years before being drafted by the NHL’s New York Islanders in the second round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He enjoyed a 15-year NHL career with the Islanders, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks, playing alongside some of the game’s most legendary names, including Mike Bossy, Denis Potvin, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey and Wayne Gretzky.

Hrudey joined CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada full-time in 1998-99, following four years of contributing to the show on a part-time basis during his final four seasons in the NHL. In addition to his work as a studio analyst, Hrudey served as a co-host for the post-game show, After Hours, and also worked as a game analyst for western game broadcasts.

He joined the NHL on Sportsnet team in August 2014, and acts as a studio analyst for national broadcasts, including Hockey Night in Canada, and as a game analyst for Sportsnet’s Calgary Flames regional broadcasts.

In 2007, Hrudey received a Gemini Award for Best Studio Analyst, recognizing his work on Hockey Night in Canada. In addition to his work with the NHL, Hrudey has covered three Olympic Winter Games including Salt Lake 2002, Torino 2006, and Sochi 2014.

He says he’s looking forward to coming back to southern Alberta to talk hockey, Pronghorns and the upcoming national championship event.

“I’m extremely excited about coming to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and sharing my stories from the great game of hockey,” says Hrudey. “As an Albertan, I consider it a huge honour to be visiting Lethbridge and especially right before a big event like the men’s national hockey championship.”

Mental health speaker and former host of TSN’s Off The Record Michael Landsberg will be the keynote speaker as Pronghorn Athletics hosts its annual Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast on Thursday September 28^th, 2017 in the 1^st Choice Savings Centre gym.

"We're thrilled to welcome Michael Landsberg as the guest speaker at our scholarship breakfast this year," says Robb Engen, manager of Development & Marketing, Pronghorn Athletics. "He’s one of the most important and influential voices for breaking the stigma of mental illness not just in sports but in society at large.”

Former TSN host Michael Landsberg will speak to his career in sports journalism and mental health issues.

Now in its sixth year, the breakfast has grown both in terms of its profile in the community and the important role it plays in advancing Pronghorn excellence. As a key fundraiser for athletic scholarships, support for the breakfast directly affects the program's ability to attract the country's top student athletes.

As part of its ongoing commitment to Pronghorn Athletics, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge generously provides up to $30,000 in matching funds for the event in support of Pronghorn student athletes.

Michael Landsberg began his broadcasting career with TSN in 1984, first as an anchor on SportsCentre, and then later helping to create and host Off The Record, Canada’s longest running talk show. Not one to shy away from anything, he talks frankly about mental health—and specifically, his own struggle with depression—and urges others to do the same.

Landsberg has made sharing his experiences with mental illness the biggest priority in his professional life. He has been an ambassador for Bell Let’s Talk, an initiative focused on raising awareness and encouraging dialogue about mental health, since it launched in 2011.

His documentary Darkness and Hope, which chronicles his experience and the experience of three star athletes battling depression, was nominated for a 2013 Canadian Screen Award. In 2012, the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health also named Landsberg one of its Champions of Mental Health.

Landsberg also takes to Twitter, using the hashtag #sicknotweak to encourage discussion around mental health and create a forum for those needing help. For his longstanding dedication to promoting mental health awareness, Landsberg was honoured with the Humanitarian Award at the 2015 Canadian Screen Awards.

Six-time Canadian Olympian and mental health advocate Clara Hughes will be the featured speaker as Pronghorn Athletics hosts its annual Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016 in the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

“We’re extremely excited to welcome Clara Hughes as our guest speaker,” says Robb Engen, manager of Development & Marketing, Sport and Recreation Services. “As much as she is celebrated for her outstanding athletic career, Clara has made an immeasurable impact on Canadian society through her work as a mental health advocate and as a supporter of children facing adversity.”

Hughes is the only athlete in history to win multiple medals in both summer and winter Olympic Games, representing Canada in both speed skating and cycling. In addition, she served as the flag-bearer for Team Canada in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games opening ceremony.

In 2011, Hughes served as the national spokesperson for Bell Let’s Talk, a campaign designed to end the stigma attached to mental illness. In 2014, undertaking Clara’s Big Ride, she completed a 110-day national bicycle tour through every province and territory in Canada. As part of the ride, she covered more than 11,000 kilometres, visited 105 communities and attended more than 235 events raising awareness for mental health. She is also the author of the bestselling, acclaimed memoir, Open Heart, Open Mind.

Over the course of her distinguished career, Hughes has won countless awards. She received the International Olympic Committee’s Sport and Community Trophy; she was honoured with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame; she was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame; and she is a member of the Order of Manitoba and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Hughes presently sits on the International Board of Directors for Right To Play, a global organization that uses the transformative power of play to educate and empower children facing adversity. She is also an Honorary Witness for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

As women’s soccer steps to the forefront of the national consciousness, Pronghorn Athletics is proud to present Canadian Senior Women’s National Soccer Team head coach John Herdman as the featured speaker for the 2015 Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast, Tuesday, September 29, 2015 in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym.

Canada is the home nation for both the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Pan Am Games this year, and Herdman is front and centre as the leader of the Canadian women’s side at each of these landmark tournaments.

English born, Herdman first came to prominence on the international stage as the head coach of the New Zealand Women’s National Football Team from 2006 through 2011, leading the team into two FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

As New Zealand’s Director of Football Development, Herdman introduced changes that revolutionized how soccer is organized and delivered with his award-winning Whole of Football Plan.

He took over as coach of the Canadian national squad in 2011 and the side experienced immediate success, winning its first ever Pan Am Games gold medal in Mexico. In the summer of 2012, Herdman and the Canadians stunned the soccer world with a bronze medal victory at the Summer Olympic Games in London.

A nominee for the 2012 FIFA Coach of the Year Award, Herdman brings with him a message of achievement, learning to overcome adversity with grace, and the role of leaders to inspire trust, confidence and success, whether on the field, in the workplace or in the home.

Burke to headline Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast

One of the most accomplished, opinionated and prominent personalities in professional hockey is the featured speaker for the 2014 Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast, to be hosted by Pronghorn Athletics on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym.

Brian Burke has spent time with professional hockey organizations in Hartford, Vancouver, Anaheim, Toronto and now Calgary over the last 20-plus years.

Brian Burke, President of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames, will be welcomed to campus for the third annual athletic scholarship fundraising event.

“We’re thrilled to be able to bring in a speaker of Brian Burke’s stature,” says Robb Engen, manager of Business Development, Sport and Recreation Services. “Brian is well known for being outspoken and one of the sport’s biggest off-ice personalities but he’s also an astute businessman, environmentalist and humanitarian. I think his message is perfect for our audience and one that will resonate long after the event.”

Burke has spent time with professional hockey organizations in Hartford, Vancouver, Anaheim, Toronto and now Calgary over the last 20-plus years.

Well respected in the hockey community. Burke’s teams have qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs seven times since 2000-2001. As executive vice-president and general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, Burke guided the Ducks to their first Stanley Cup win in 2007. He was appointed to the Hockey Hall of Fame’s selection committee and is an original member of the US Men’s National Team Advisory group. In 2008, he received the Lester Patrick Award for his outstanding service to hockey in the United States.

Outside the rink, Burke is well known for his community involvement. He is a vocal activist against homophobia in sports, and a strong supporter of first response personnel and military service members.

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 (7 to 9 a.m., 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport & Wellness Gymnasium), Pronghorn Athletics will welcome Mark Tewksbury and Debbie Muir, founders of Great Traits to campus. It's an opportunity for local individuals and organizations to tap into Great Traits and experience an interactive, fast-paced and inspiring session featuring two of the country's most prominent Olympians and high performance experts at the 2013 Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast.

Mark Tewksbury and Debbie Muir will be the fetaured speakers at the 2013 Pronghorns Scholarship Breakfast.

Olympic gold medallist Tewksbury and Olympic champion and hall of fame coach Muir have teamed up to form Great Traits (www.thegreattraits.com), a professional development company focused on the fundamentals of achievement, leadership and legacy. Together, they have authored a book (The Great Traits of Champions) and offer a variety of workshops and training programs to a wide range of clients.

Tewksbury, a true swimming icon in the country, first came to prominence at the Barcelona Olympics, where he won gold, silver and bronze medals. He has since been inducted into three halls of fame, enjoyed an international speaking career, is a passionate human rights advocate, authored three books and hosted numerous television shows.

Muir is an internationally respected leader, one of Canada's greatest coaches and an influential voice within the Canadian sport system. She was a pioneer with the national synchronized swimming team, leading Canada into two Olympic Games, and has spent more than a decade working with Own the Podium, connecting many of Canada's top sport organizations to higher levels of performance. Currently, she sits on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.

Game day shirts establishing Horns culture

The challenge is on!

As part of the Recruitment and Retention Project (RRP), the Enhancing Community & School Spirit (ECSS) subject matter team is challenging ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ departments, faculty, staff and students to wear Game Day Shirts on the day of our Pronghorn Athletics games.

The ECSS team has partnered with Sport & Recreation Services to develop the initiative, and an initial order of shirts for participating departments has already taken place. ECSS team leaders, Kara Watson and Trevor Flexhaug, say the initiative is designed to foster a greater awareness and promotion of when Horns games are taking place, to engage more faculty, staff and students with Pronghorn Athletics by having them attend games and to increase the pride of wearing our ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge branded clothing.

Horns culture gets a boost from a new campus initiative aimed at engaging the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community.

"It's also about having some fun and challenging departments across campus to see who can promote the Horns' brand the best and increase attendance at the games," says Flexhaug.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Calgary and Edmonton campuses are also invited to participate.

"It's exciting to see an initiative like this take shape," says Sandy Slavin, executive director of Sport & Recreation Services (SRS). "Pronghorn Athletics represents the entire ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and to see widespread support like this is great for the program and will really be noticed by our student-athletes."

Robb Engen, the manager of marketing and promotion for S&RS, is a member of the ECSS team and helped direct the proposal. He says that SRS will provide campus with notice the day prior to every Horns game so that everyone will know when to wear the shirts. Game days are also promoted on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's digital signage system and on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Drive digital screen. A full Pronghorns season schedule is available at gohorns.ca.

The impetus for the initiative comes from a School Spirit Student Survey that was conducted by the ECSS team. The survey indicated that 49 per cent of student respondents (1,017 students responded in total) had never attended a Pronghorn game, 25 per cent indicated there was a need to create more awareness of Horns Athletics on campus and better communication of campus events, while less than 44 per cent of respondents had ever worn U of L branded clothing.

This is just the initial stage of the Game Day Shirts project, with the campus departments that most interact with our students invited to participate.

Watch for further promotion of Game Day Shirts (they'll be available at the Horns Athletics Office, PE210, later this month) and upcoming staff, faculty and department opportunities to get involved.

Horns announce Scholarship Breakfast

Pronghorn Athletics at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is looking for a community team effort to fill the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym and kick off what they hope becomes an annual scholarship event that supports Pronghorn athletes.

The breakfast event on Tuesday, Sept. 25, will feature well-known television broadcaster Brian Williams, fresh off his experiences at the 2012 Olympic Games, as the featured speaker.

"The funds raised at the inaugural Pronghorn Scholarship Breakfast are the lifeline of our athletics program," says Robb Engen, Manager of Business Development, Sport and Recreation Services.

"Without the amazing support of the community, we would not be able to field competitive sports teams, vie for national championships or produce Olympic-calibre athletes."

Engen said the goal is to raise more than $60,000 to support the Pronghorn Scholarship Fund.

"This will allow us to assist our student athletes as they balance their studies with their sport, as well as help us increase our competitive edge as we recruit new athletes to our programs. We are in a very tough conference, competing against some very big schools, so it is important that we're able to offer our student athletes all we can in terms of scholarship support."

Considered the dean of Canadian sports commentators, Williams has covered virtually every professional and major amateur sports event around the globe. His broadcasting style has won numerous awards and praise from critics, and he will be making his first public speaking engagement at the Horns Scholarship Breakfast following his work at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Taking a run at breast cancer

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's hockey team has set a lofty goal, and it has nothing to do with what happens on the ice.

The Horns are taking on breast cancer with their second annual Pink in the Rink weekend, Oct. 21-22, when they host ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan Huskies at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

"Our goal this year is to make it equivalent to the men's Movember event," says fifth-year forward Megan Bach of Champion, Alta. "We really want to raise as much money as possible to truly make a difference, and to help create a future without breast cancer."

The Horns women's hockey team will be sporting special pink jerseys Oct. 21-22 to help raise awareness of and funds for the fight against breast cancer. Pictured here (L to R) are Breanna Frasca, Megan Bach, Leanne Gerwing and Glenda Edie.

The fundraising initiative involves a series of raffles and auctions, as well as pledge opportunities as three Horns players will cut off their hair in support of the Locks of Love campaign.

"I think most people on our team, through their extended families, have all been affected by cancer in some way," says second-year goaltender Leanne Gerwing of Aborfield, Sask. She, along with third-year defenceman Glenda Edie of Dugald, Man. and rookie forward Breanna Frasca of Kamloops, B.C., will cut her hair for Locks of Love.

"Breast cancer hits especially close to home because we're all women. Both my grandmas had breast cancer and survived it ,and so did my billet in high school. There are so many girls where it's an experience that is close to them, that this weekend means a lot."

The Horns will be wearing special pink jerseys for the two-game series against the Huskies, after which they will be auctioned off to fans. Raffle tables will be set up all weekend, with mini laptops, hockey camp registrations, a breast cancer-themed double quilt (valued at $750) and many more items up for grabs. As well, Florida Panthers forward and Lethbridge minor hockey product Kris Versteeg has donated a signed jersey for auction.

Bach says the community has been generous in its support of the initiative and the team has found open doors as it connects with southern Alberta businesses.

"When we approached some of the local businesses, they often had their own personal stories of cancer in their families," she says. "It's one of the reasons they really wanted to help out and we're so appreciative of their efforts."

Those wishing to support the Horns and the Breast Cancer Foundation can do so by attending the games and taking part in the silent auctions and raffles. People can also donate to the cause through Locks of Love pledges at the Horns Athletics Office, or by calling 403-329-2228.

"We have a history of supporting various Breast Cancer Foundation events through basketball and now with women's hockey, this is just another great way to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise some money for the cause," adds Robb Engen, the manager of business development for Sport and Recreation Services.
