He devoted countless hours to propelling the department forward and procuring specialized state-of-the-art equipment such as X-ray diffractometers and spectrometers. He has been continuously funded by Discovery Grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) for more than three decades.</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>Boeré has also been at the forefront of his field, developing and employing new concepts and techniques and sharing them with colleagues and students at other universities. His broad-ranging expertise includes electrochemistry, X-ray crystallography, sulfur-nitrogen chemistry and he is a leader in a technique called electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. His unique skill set has earned him recognition around the world. Other chemists seek him for possible collaborations, and he has also been an external examiner for several PhD defences. Boeré has mentored many students at all levels as well as post-doctoral fellows.</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>After earning an honours Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in 1979, Boeré then completed a PhD in inorganic chemistry at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Western Ontario in 1984. Following an NSERC post-doctoral fellowship at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Guelph, he received a Humboldt Research Fellowship, a prestigious fellowship for researchers with above-average qualifications, at the Free Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Berlin. Boeré joined the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge in 1988. While he faced many challenges in establishing his research program at the start, he persevered and has since succeeded in creating a program that rivals those found in larger chemistry departments. For evidence of his research productivity, one need not look further than his publication record, which includes more than 160 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, five reviews and book chapters and his work has been showcased in more than 120 conference presentations. He has involved undergraduate students in research and 45 publications have co-authorships with undergrads. Boeré has also mentored 10 master&rsquo;s and six PhD students and trained three post-doctoral fellows and research associates. In addition to teaching at ULethbridge, Boeré has been a visiting professor and Humboldt Scholar in Germany, Brazil, Australia, Japan, Finland and France. He has extensive teaching experience in general and inorganic chemistry, solid-state chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and aspects of physical chemistry.</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Boeré has lent his expertise to organizations and committees within the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and outside organizations. He served as Chair for the NSERC Scholarship Selection and General Grant Distribution and the Canadian Council of Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Chemistry Chairpersons. He was a member of the Canadian Society for Chemistry&rsquo;s Degree Accreditation Committee from 2008 to 2014. Closer to home, Boeré was part of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Library Committee and contributed to obtaining Canadian Society for Chemistry accreditation for the Bachelor of Science major. He also led efforts to obtain specialized scientific equipment.</span></span></span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/speaker-research-award" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Speaker Research Award</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/department-chemistry-biochemistry" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Department of Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/faculty-arts-science" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/ren%C3%A9-boer%C3%A9" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">René Boeré</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Internationally recognized inorganic chemist, Dr. René Boeré, earns 2024 Speaker Research Award" class="rdf-meta"></span> Wed, 15 May 2024 19:35:01 +0000 trevor.kenney 12534 at /unews Cross-country collaboration creates compelling chemistry /unews/article/cross-country-collaboration-creates-compelling-chemistry <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p><span><span>Finding new chemotherapy drugs is a painstaking process that often takes years, including plenty of hours in the lab, as Flávia Marszaukowski can attest.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Marszaukowski, a PhD student at Brazil&rsquo;s Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa (UEPG), has been working in Dr. René Boeré&rsquo;s lab in the Department of Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge since March of 2019, thanks to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two universities.</span></span><div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:350px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/ReneandFlavia.jpg" title="Dr. René Boeré and Flávia Marszaukowski at a conference held during pre-COVID-19 times. If you talk to Dr. Kathryn Preuss (BSc '95) about her academic life and professional career, you'll notice a string of coincidences and happenings that seem to have set her on a path that's led Preuss to her current position as an associate professor at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Guelph and a Tier II Canada Research Chair in the Chemistry of Molecular Materials.</p><p>It started when Preuss was a school kid, and her father, Dr. Peter Preuss, taught philosophy at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.</p><p>"I remember going to the Christmas parties, running around and having fun on campus as a child," recalls Preuss. "The U of L has always been a positive environment for me."</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:250px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/alumni-preuss.jpg" alt="Kathryn Preuss" title="Preuss values the research opportunities she enjoyed as an undergraduate student at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge."><div class="image-caption">Preuss values the research opportunities she enjoyed as an undergraduate student at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.</div></div></p><p>Attending the U of L was therefore pretty much in the cards for Preuss from the beginning. She knew the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ well and was aware of its great undergrad reputation across the country. Preuss enrolled at the U of L with the intention of taking her talent for science into the field of medicine. But as it happened, fate once again played its hand.</p><p>"When you're a girl and you're good at science, everybody tells you that you should become a doctor, so that's what I assumed I'd be," says Preuss. "But then I met professor René Boeré."</p><p>In 1992, Preuss had earned the highest marks among all first-year chemistry students. At the end of the year, Boeré approached Preuss about accepting a summer job in his lab and she jumped at the opportunity. In need of a job, the idea of getting paid to do something she was genuinely interested in was too enticing to pass up.</p><p>Preuss spent that summer conducting experiments on inorganic synthesis and doing all sorts of exciting things that very few first-year undergrad students ever have the chance to do.</p><p>"It was eye opening," recalls Preuss. "I couldn't believe I was getting paid to do all that cool stuff and was building my academic credentials at the same time. Suddenly I realized that it was possible to be a professional chemist, to do research and actually make a living at it."</p><p>From there, Preuss's path took a turn. She focused on obtaining a degree in chemistry and continued to work in various professors' labs between semesters. Preuss furthered her experiments in inorganic synthesis and later expanded her research to the areas of organic synthesis, thermodynamics and photochemistry.</p><p>By the time Preuss had finished her undergraduate studies, she had no fewer than seven published papers to her name – more than most PhD students tend to have on their CVs. Preuss graduated with distinction from the U of L, was awarded the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science Gold Medal (Science) for her achievements and went on to complete a PhD in inorganic chemistry at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Waterloo.</p><p>Today, Preuss is a leading expert in the field of materials science. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the Royal Society of Canada's Alice Wilson Award, the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada's UFA Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Faculty Award, and the Ontario Government's Early Research Award.</p><p>Her research is innovative and influential – the magnitude of which only a chemist can truly appreciate.</p><p>"We are attempting to make bifunctional or multifunctional materials, but our design is unique," she explains. "We are the first to actually develop thiazyl radicals as ligands in a rational way, and we have added a new class of radicals. We've taken the entire metal-radical concept a step further than it has every been taken before."</p><p>Ask her how she feels the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge prepared her for academic achievement and professional success, and Preuss's response is crystal clear.</p><p>"My education at the U of L is directly responsible for where I am today," says Preuss. "If I hadn't gone to the U of L, met professor Boeré and worked in his lab, I wouldn't have become a chemist. None of what I've done would have been accomplished. The U of L gave me the opportunity to do a lot of really significant research and be recognized for it early on. Attending the U of L definitely gave me a head start and got me going in the right direction, academically and professionally."</p><p>It might be hard to prove, but scientists may just believe in fate after all.</p><p><strong>GET THE FACTS</strong></p><p>&middot; After completing her PhD in 2000, Preuss held post-doctoral positions at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Colorado and North Carolina State Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. She returned to Canada in 2002<br> <br> &middot; Her current research has implications in the areas of low-power data storage, sensors and other adaptive technologies<br> <br> &middot; In addition to her teaching and research commitments, Preuss is an avid sailor and tries to spend some time each summer on Georgian Bay (Lake Huron) with her young family. She is married to Joel and has two children, Genevive (3) and Marco (1)</p><p><em>This story first appeared in the October 2012 issue of the Legend. new <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/strategicplan/" rel="nofollow">2009-2013 Strategic Plan</a> sets a course for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ over the next five years. We asked various members of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community their impressions of the Strategic Plan and how they fit personally in the vision of the plan.<br> <br> <strong> Ren&eacute; Boer&eacute;</strong><br> Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas/chm" rel="nofollow">Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry</a><br> <br> <strong> 1. What does this plan mean to you?</strong><br> <br> Ren&eacute;: I think this is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to take stock and refocus on what the central values of our institution are and how they can best be implemented. There is a tremendous challenge facing all universities: we must choose among many good and worthwhile endeavours to select, promote and celebrate the very best. Easier said than done. Thus I am very pleased that the onus for the implementation of this plan has been placed out in the institution as a whole. I take this document more as a spur for creative and disciplined thinking by the community of scholars and learners (see below) than as a corporate diktat.<div class="image-caption-container" style="width:300px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/rene.jpg" title="René Boeré, chemistry professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, shares his thoughts on the Strategic Plan." alt=""><div class="image-caption">René Boeré, chemistry professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, shares his thoughts on the Strategic Plan.</div></div><br> <br> <strong> 2. How do you see yourself in the plan?</strong><br> <br> I am fully committed to the creation of a culture of graduate education at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. And I am convinced that doing so will enhance, rather than threaten, the core values of our institution. Honestly, without this dimension, we cannot hope to achieve what a university is uniquely supposed to be!<br> <br> <strong> 3. What does it mean to be a comprehensive university?</strong><br> <br> I believe that in Canada in the 21st century, among the many kinds of education options that exist, the comprehensive university is the very best at exemplifying the original ideals embedded in the European or Western university tradition. The success of the university as an institution has been demonstrated, of course, by its adoption around the globe in societies ranging from the most sophisticated to those in the ground-floor stages of development. However, the core ideals of this tradition are sometimes better and sometimes less-well expressed.<br> <br> The root of this ideal is expressed in our Plan when we state that, "We will welcome our students to a community of scholars" (p. 2), to which I would add, "to become learners". While other kinds of institutions tend to focus primarily on teaching (i.e. colleges and liberal arts universities) or training (technical institutes, professional schools at large universities), I believe that the comprehensive university provides the best opportunity for a true balance between scholarship and learning. I see a synergism between faculty who are leaders in scholarship, graduate students who are scholars-in-training and undergraduates who are being weaned from the schools model of dependence on "teachers" to becoming active learners.<br> <br> My passion is that we can induct the young people of our region, and from further abroad, into this exciting community of scholars and learners that is now starting to emerge at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.<br> <br> <strong> 4. The plan outlines five strategic directions. What area of the plan are you most passionate about?</strong><br> <br> I guess I gave this away already in my answer to the previous question! I am passionate about the growth of the graduate program, which I believe is central to our emergence as a comprehensive university (and I am thrilled to see that this is Strategic Direction A1 in the plan).<br> <br> I really believe that an active graduate school, properly nurtured and supported, is the key to us becoming a functioning community of scholars and learners. While many other "directions" are identified in the Plan, I think it essential that these other initiatives are set in the context of this central value, so that they become aspects of enhancing our values: yes, we are a community, but a particular kind of community, and cannot therefore be all things to all people. Thus, I strongly identify also with Directions B4 (internationalization) and C2 (bridges to the city and region) - the graduate program will be more international than the undergraduate program has been, thus acting as a catalyst for this strategic direction. Yet by being very intentional at reaching out to the schools and citizens of our region we can really hope to transfer our broad vision of an interconnected world with the people of southern Alberta.<br> <br> One concrete example of C2 was an initiative by my department, along with Physics &amp; Astronomy, when developing the proposed new major in nanoscience, whereby we are seeking funding for a kind of mobile laboratory that would take cutting-edge nanotechnology out to the high schools in our regions so that potential young scientists can practice hands-on what they now can only learn about via the media. Similarly, the welcome focus in B7 on FNMI students represents a key aspect of that regional society that we ought to be reaching out to more intentionally.<br> <br> <strong> 5. Fast-forward five years, how would you describe the U of L of 2013?</strong><br> <br> If we can be disciplined to focus our energies and refuse to dissipate them by going a thousand directions at once, 2013 could see the U of L become a thoroughly functioning community of scholars and learners. It remains to be seen whether we can hold each other accountable to that vision. And if we can weather the fiscal storm that is battering the economy, I certainly hope by 2013 to see a start in construction of a new academic building for the laboratory-based sciences that integrates research and instructional activities and thereby help reverse the trend of the past 15 years of building more and more single-purpose research buildings.<br> <br> <em><strong>If you'd like to submit your thoughts on the Strategic Plan to members of the planning committee, e-mail <a href="mailto:stratplanfeedback@uleth.ca" rel="nofollow">stratplanfeedback@uleth.ca</a></strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/department-chemistry-and-biochemistry" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/ren%C3%A9-boer%C3%A9" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">René Boeré</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/professor-chemistry-and-chair" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Professor of Chemistry and Chair</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Strategic Plan Q &amp; A: René Boeré" class="rdf-meta"></span> Mon, 23 Feb 2009 17:37:56 +0000 trevor.kenney 5322 at /unews
