Zoo summer hours begin

The Spring 2012 semester has come to a close and only a quiet murmur propagates through many of the campus hallways, and yet the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is still a vibrant, busy place.

A strong contingent of students, staff and faculty will remain busy through the summer months, and for the first time in recent memory, the Zoo will be open for everyone to enjoy.

In past years, the Zoo closed at the end of the spring semester and would re-open again in September. This year, the Zoo will be re-opening its doors on Monday, May 7.

The Zoo will offer a great summer menu that includes numerous Zoo classics and some new summer flavours to spice things up. Specials on libations will be available every day with savoury offerings for all tastes.

A great new addition to the Zoo's atmosphere is the bright, comfortable outdoor furniture that populates the patio. New seating, tables and umbrellas promise a delightful place to enjoy the best the Zoo has to offer during the upcoming Lethbridge summer.

The Zoo will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 11a.m. to 7 p.m. (with Happy Hour running from 4 to 7 p.m.) on Thursday and Friday.

Bill Nye visits U of L campus

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union (ULSU) and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Graduate Students' Association (GSA) are proud to welcome Bill Nye to campus as part of the ULSU's Annual Student Speaker Series.

"One of our primary mandates is to increase student engagement on campus and create a unique and memorable experience for our students," says Andrew Williams, the ULSU vice-president academic.

With that in mind, Williams began the process of courting and finalizing a deal with Nye's camp over eight months ago. It was a lengthy process but Williams believes it will pay off in a very big way with the Monday, Jan. 23 (Noon to 3:30 p.m., 1st Choice Savings Centre) appearance.

"I chose to bring Bill Nye to the U of L for a number of reasons," says Williams. "He is a man, who for many current students, ignited a passion for learning and pursuing knowledge, and that passion and enthusiasm are contagious."

Bill Nye popularized the study of science for a generation of youngsters.

For over 15 years, Nye has been providing audiences with exciting, educational science entertainment. His most prominent persona, Bill Nye the Science Guy, began in September 1993 and ran for five years. Nye hosted a total of 100 episodes to much critical acclaim and captured 19 Emmy Awards.

The excitement from both the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community and the greater Lethbridge area to the event is apparent in the brisk ticket sales. Williams says the ULSU has already sold more than 2,200 tickets.

"My hope is that Bill Nye's appearance will remind students of their strong passion and desire to learn, as well as recharge their batteries, so to speak, before mid-terms begin."

The event's attendees are not the only ones who stand to benefit from Nye's colloquial monologues. All proceeds from the event go to the ULSU Food Bank, helping to ensure that its shelves remain full and at the ready for all those who seek its services.

"The ULSU Food Bank is there to provide students in need with one of the most basic of human necessities," says Williams.

The 1st Choice Savings Centre gymnasium will host the noon event, with the popular ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Chem Guys – John Eng & Wayne Lippa – serving as the opening act.

SU looks to mobilize voters

The Council of Alberta ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Students (CAUS) and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union (ULSU) recently rolled out an ambitious Get Out The Vote (GOTV) campaign to get young and first-time voters in Alberta's post-secondary institutions involved in the impending provincial election.

"The goal of the campaign is simple, get as many students out to vote as possible," says ULSU president and CAUS Chair Zack Moline. "Students at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will be asked to sign a pledge form with a commitment that they will vote in the next election."

The contact information that the students provide on the pledge form will be used to update them with the necessary information to make an informed decision on Election Day. It will also provide CAUS and the ULSU the opportunity to encourage students to get out and exercise their right to vote.

"As a Spring election appears imminent, the ULSU is preparing now to ensure that the campaign is an overwhelming success," said Moline.

Together with CAUS, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta Students' Unions, the ULSU hopes to inform and encourage a record number of students to pledge and then get out to the polls in the potential spring election. This upcoming election will be exciting, and will be the first provincial election for many new voters and the ULSU is optimistic that droves of students will pledge.

Students can pledge to vote online at the campaign website www.getoutthevote.ca but will also be given numerous opportunities to pledge in person throughout the campaign.

Food bank a valuable service

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union (ULSU), an organization mandated to aid students and governed by students, offers a long list of excellent services to the student population throughout the year; but few are as valuable as the ULSU Food Bank.

Formally introduced by the ULSU General Assembly in 2004, the ULSU Food Bank has been growing with every new academic year. Last year, the Food Bank provided over 140 food hampers, both single and family, and saw a consistent increase in new students utilizing the services from the previous year.

The food hampers are designed to assist a student or a family for a period of five to seven days and each contains various healthy food choices. Students are eligible to utilize the Food Bank's services twice a month up to a maximum of ten times throughout their entire academic career.

The Food Bank is a donation driven service and the ULSU hosts numerous fundraising events every year to ensure that the shelves remain stocked and the hampers are plentiful. This year's fundraising efforts kicked off in September with a Car Wash and BBQ held at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Drive Alliance Church (UDAC).

"With the help of UDAC, the General Assembly, our friends at CKXU, community members and volunteers, the ULSU raised $350 to stock the Food Bank shelves," says VP Operations & Finance Leyland Bradley.

The last week of October brought on the second fundraiser of the year, the Trick or Eat Food Drive. Trick or Eat pits campus clubs against one another in a friendly competition to see which of them can raise the most donations, both edible and monetary, through an extensive community canvassing campaign.

At a time when rising education costs and living expenses are scrutinized and discussed at every societal level, and students are feeling the financial pinch more than ever before; now is the time to champion services that facilitate the post-secondary experience.

The ULSU Food Bank is an invaluable service to many ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students that is only made possible by the generous donations from the Lethbridge and area community, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community and countless individual donors and volunteers.

UPass defeated at referendum

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge undergraduate population has spoken, voting down the UPass initiative introduced via referendum.

In this year's referendum, 2888 of the 6825 eligible undergraduate students went to the polls, 42.32 per cent of the eligible student population. A total of 64.58 per cent (1,863) of these students selected 'NO' on the 2011 UPass Referendum voting card. The 'YES' vote received 35.42 per cent (1,022) of student support.

The defeated 2011 UPass proposal included two major additions since the last referendum in 2006. Firstly, students on practicum outside of Lethbridge, living outside the service area or taking distance learning courses were eligible to opt-out of the program. Secondly, if the proposal were to be approved, it would be subject to a one year term and would return to referendum in February 2013 for permanent approval.

Similar to 2006, the price of the UPass was to be tied to an adult monthly pass, meaning it would have cost students $77.50 per semester.

Funding cuts to post-secondary, topic of ULSU event

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union will host Public Interest Alberta today at noon as they present "Don't Cut Us Out", an event discussing funding cuts to post-secondary education.

Public Interest Alberta launched "Don't Cut Us Out," as a province-wide campaign. Tuesday's event will feature speakers representing the Students' Union, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty Association, the Graduate Students' Association and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

They contend that Alberta's future largely depends on post-secondary education; it enriches our economy, makes our society healthier and more vibrant and it helps to solve the problems affecting our environment. Investing in post-secondary education will make Alberta strong and prosperous.

"The Government of Alberta has a great opportunity to boost Alberta's economic and social development through post-secondary education," says Alex Massé, Vice President of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union. "We are deeply concerned that recent provincial funding decisions will jeopardize that development by forcing our post-secondary institutions to sacrifice either access or quality."

Although the need for post-secondary education is greater than ever, provincial funding for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will see, at best, a zero per cent increase in the years 2010 to 2012. This loss in funding will be felt throughout the institution, and has forced the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to consider eliminating staff, faculty and services. The Alberta Government has the power to increase post-secondary education funding by prioritizing this grand investment.

ULSU nominations week

It is nominations week on campus for the upcoming ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union (ULSU) Executive Council and General Assembly elections.

A total of 20 positions are available with four seats on Executive Council and 16 seats in the General Assembly up for grabs. The elections run Mar. 3-5 but nominations are only open this week, Feb. 9-13, closing Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Students wishing to be nominated for a ULSU position must stop by SU180 to pick up a nomination package.

Following the close of the nomination period, a candidate orientation session will be held Friday at 5 p.m. Campaigning then begins Feb. 21 at noon and concludes Mar. 2 at 4:30 p.m.

There will be a Town Hall at noon on Feb. 25, in the Atrium, followed by an Executive Debate at noon on Feb. 26, also in the Atrium. Voting will take place online at www.ulsu.ca, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Mar. 3 with the polls closing at 3 p.m. on Mar. 5. Results of the ULSU elections will be announced Mar. 5 at 5 p.m.
