embarking on another five game road swing. The ‘Horns host the CIS fourth ranked Calgary Dinos (4-0-0) Friday night in the front half of a home-and-home series. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena, with free tickets available to students at the U of L's Customer Service Desk in the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

After a bye left them idle on the opening weekend of the conference schedule, the Horns opened their Canada West season with a disappointing road trip to Regina, losing 6-0 and 5-1 to the Cougars.

Sophomore defender Tim Campbell scored the lone goal for the Horns, while goaltender Dylan Tait suffered the loss in both games.

For the fourth-ranked Dinos, the 2013 season has started perfectly, sweeping both of their series to date. After sweeping the Regina Cougars in Regina two weeks ago, the Dinos beat the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend. Through four games, the Dinos have scored 21 goals while surrendering just nine.

Pronghorn Athletics is partnering with Kid’s Sport this men’s hockey season in a campaign to raise money to support sending kids to sport camps. Kid’s Sport is the official charity of Canada West and Pronghorn Athletics will be supporting the great work Kid’s Sport does in the community by supporting a “Score for Camps” campaign this year. Building on the idea of third-year forward Cass Mappin, a donation, valueing the average cost of sending a child to camp, will be made to Kid’s Sport for every home goal scored by the Pronghorns men’s hockey team during the 2013-2014 season.

Women's Hockey

Coming off a tough home weekend last time out, the Pronghorns women’s hockey team (1-1-2) looks to rebound in their home-and-home series with the Dinos (1-2-1).

The weekend set begins Friday night in Calgary at Father David Bauer Arena with the second game going in Lethbridge Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Puck drop for both nights is set for 7 p.m.

Last weekend, the Horns earned just a single point in their series with the CIS fifth ranked Regina Cougars, losing 5-1 and then 2-1 in a shootout. The Horns will need to shore up their defensive game if they are going to be successful this season. Through four games, the ‘Horns have allowed a league leading 14 goals against.

At the other end of the ice, the Horns have scored nine goals in four games and former Canada West rookie of the year Sadie Lensta looks to have returned to her freshman form, leading the club with two goals and an assist.

For the Dinos, they have a distinctly different look this season. Gone are head coach Danielle Goyette and Hailey Wickenheiser, both centralized with the Canadian National Team in preparation for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

In their last action, the Dinos earned a weekend split with the UBC Thunderbirds, losing 4-0 before rebounding for their first win of the season, 4-3 in a shootout.

Horns Soccer

The Pronghorns women’s soccer team (0-9-2) will conclude the 2013 season this weekend with one game on the road, traveling to Calgary to face the Dinos.

It has been a rough 2013 campaign for the Horns with only two points to show for their effort. They rank second last in goal scoring with five and third last in goal against, allowing 31.

Meanwhile, with four games remaining in the Canada West soccer schedule, the Pronghorns men’s soccer team (2-8-1) was officially eliminated from post-season contention last Sunday when the Calgary Dinos defeated the UNBC Timberwolves.

In the second to last weekend of the regular season, the Horns head out on the road to face the Fraser Valley Cascades and Victoria Vikes.

For the ‘Horns, the inability to find the back of the net will haunt this season’s squad. With seven games remaining in the season, the Horns are only four points out of a playoff spot.

The Horns, who have scored just seven goals in eight games, will need to generate more offense if they are to make a push to the post-season. Guilherme Costa leads the teams in goals with two, both coming from the penalty spot.

The Wesmen (2-4-2 CW), won just one of their first six games but earned four points last weekend in Calgary, beating the Dinos 3-2 before completing the trip with a 1-1 tie the next day.

On the women's front, the Horns (0-5-2) are still searching for their first victory of the season after suffering two losses in Saskatchewan last weekend, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies and 2-1 to the Regina Cougars.

Offensive production continues to be the Horns undoing so far this season, only scoring three goals thus far.

Defensively, the Horns have been solid, having only allowed 11 goals in seven games.

Friday night, the Horns face the Victoria Vikes (4-2-0), before travelling to Abbotsford on Saturday to meet up with the Fraser Valley Cascades (2-3-1).

Women's Rugby

Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Pronghorns women’s rugby team heads out on the road for a pair of games versus provincial rivals Calgary Dinos and Alberta Pandas.

Sitting at 1-1 and with a guaranteed spot in the Canada West Championship tournament (which the Horns host Oct. 18-20), this weekend’s results will determine the seeding for the Canada West semifinals.

Friday in Calgary, the Horns will have revenge on their mind when they face the Calgary Dinos (2-1). The Dinos ended the Horns' 22-game conference winning streak last season with a 31-18 win and then knocked the Horns out of title contention with a 33-32 victory in the Canada West semifinal in Edmonton.

The Horns are led by Kim Leavitt’s three tries, which places her in a tie for second in the conference, and Tiffany Wideen, who has taken over the kicking duties this season and has connected on three converts. For the Dinos, Natasha Loucks leads a balanced attack with three tries and Kate Scotland has connected on six converts and two penalty goals for 18 points.

Sunday, the Horns take on the defending Canada West champion Alberta Pandas (3-0). So far, the Pandas have yet to be tested. Following their 62-17 trouncing of the Dinos to open the season, the Pandas shut out both of their BC opponents on the road, beating the Victoria Vikes 49-0 and the UBC T-Birds 39-0.

Men's Basketball

Finally, the Horns men's basketball team will host MacEwan Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ for a pre-season tilt, Friday night at 7 p.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym.

MacEwan is currently an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) team but will be joining Canada West next season. Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge places on community engagement," says U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon. "Encouraging our children to play is important from a developmental point of view and events like this are important from a community point of view."

The event was successful due to the help of more than 100 volunteers from on campus and the broader community. The event brought together representatives from areas all over campus including the Art Gallery, Sport and Recreation Services and science outreach programs.

A variety of activities in the 1st Choice Savings Centre and at the Max Bell Aquatic Centre were all designed to encourage free play and exploration. The goal, of course, is to have the themes that are discussed throughout the week resonate long after the event spotlight has faded.

"I think it's great to highlight the week and to bring in speakers and all the bells and whistles, but this is something that should be infused in our everyday," says caucus member and Chair of Respect and Diversity Awareness Week, Dr. Noella Piquette.

Dr. Noella Piquette is the Chair of Gender Diversity Equity Week.

An associate professor in the Faculty of Education, Piquette says that issues of diversity are becoming a greater part of mainstream conversation but there is much work to be done.

'Diversity Includes All' is the theme to this year's week and is designed to get faculty members to think about their own diversity as well as the student diversity that exists on campus.

"We do a fantastic job at this university talking about students and how we can support them, and while we're not trying to shift the focus, we're broadening the focus to include the fact that we have a huge faculty and staff component on campus, and it's important to think about the diversity that exists within those groups," says Piquette.

The week kicks off with a presentation from assistant professor of neuroscience Dr. Robbin Gibb as she presents Sex Differences in the Brain, Monday, Mar. 11 at noon in TH241.

Gibb will outline some of the factors influencing brain development that are mediated by sex differences. What promises to be a lively question and answer session follows her talk.

On Tuesday, the Spoken Word – Poetry Slam event is at noon in AH176. This gives presenters a platform to speak, read, rhyme or rant their words in a two-minute window as they discuss diversity and inclusion.

"I think this will be so much fun and really puts a new slant on discussing diversity," says Piquette, who notes that the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group is also supporting the event.

Faculty, staff and students are all welcome to take part. Participants just need to sign up in advance by contacting Piquette at noella.piquette@uleth.ca.

Wednesday's event is a presentation with Jeff Meadows and Brad Reamsbottom of the Teaching Centre. They will discuss Supporting Faculty in Supporting Students with Learning Disabilities, focussing on some of the key issues that students may be experiencing within reading and writing tasks, and specific strategies that can be employed to assist them.

A pair of events takes place Thursday, beginning with a wheelchair basketball demonstration hosted by Dr. Mary Dyck (kinesiology and physical education) and with the Lethbridge Wheelchair Basketball Association (10:45 a.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym), followed by a special film screening of Shameless: The ART of disability (7 p.m. in PE264).

"It's a heartwarming movie, but at the same time it's also very comical," says Piquette. "They really try and show that disability is not all about being sad and serious, it's a part of life and they do a great job at portraying that message."

The week wraps up with Friday's Strengthening Academic Capacity: Gender Dimensions presentation by Mary Butterfield of the Office of Research and Innovation Services.

Butterfield will speak to gender equality in academic research at 12:15 p.m. in TH277.

Piquette has long been involved with issues related to diversity. She was a special education teacher and guidance counsellor for 14 years at the school level and now as an associate professor, teaches courses in special education at the undergraduate level and in counselling at the graduate level, focusing on a broader picture of diversity and mechanisms to advocate for inclusion within all community systems.

"We've done our best to represent as many different approaches to the discussion of diversity issues as we could with this week's events," she says. "I really do urge everyone to find a topic that might be of interest to them and to engage in the conversation."

For more information on any of these events or any issues related to the its second annual – and free – Play Day event on Family Day (Monday, February 18). The circus-themed event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre and the Ascent Climbing Centre.

"Play Day is designed to reach out to the community, but on another level it's trying to communicate about the value of play for families," says Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge President, Dr. Mike Mahon, who introduced Play Day at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in 2012 to promote the positive aspects of play and its influence on creating healthy individuals and healthy communities. "The concept is really focused on families, not just on children – we are encouraging families to come and play together."

<img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/play-day.jpg" alt="Play Day" title="Katie Mahon, daughter of Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ President Dr. Mike Mahon, assists in the construction zone at last year's inaugural Play Day event. This year's circus-themed party should be even bigger and better.

The circus theme of this year's event includes a number of new activities added to the popular play zones from the inaugural Play Day. Among the added activities is a Music Zone where drop-in Kindermusik classes and sound bingo will entertain children aged zero to 18 months, as well as a drop-in world drumming area. Carnival games have been added, as well as a Toonie Barbecue area and a Fitastic Play zone for toddler fitness. For those daring enough to scale the heights, the Ascent Climbing Centre's climbing wall will also be open to the public.

"We're excited to be a part of Play Day again this year, and I think it will be even bigger and better than last year's event," says Brian Kinahan (BMgt '79), president and CEO of major sponsor 1stChoice Savings. "As a community-minded organization, we're thrilled to partner with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and present this opportunity for southern Alberta families to come together and enjoy the amenities here at the U of L 1st Choice Savings Centre for a day of play."

Last year, a massive cardboard construction zone was a hit with participants of all ages, and will be back this year, with even more space (and cardboard) to play with.

"It was so much fun to see parents and young kids playing together," says Mahon. "They were cutting shapes and playing make believe and the parents were playing as much as the kids were, and that was really cool to watch. That's the real sprit of Play Day and if we as a university can contribute to families by encouraging play, then we're doing a good thing."

Following is a list of free activities available at Play Day 2013

Science – Airzookas; Air Pressure Funnel; Science Toy Circus

Technology – Tri-flexa Hexagons; Scratch Programming; Mobius Strip

Art & Creative – Carnival Hats; Lethbridge is poised to become a hub for the delivery of orthopedic medicine and sports medicine to the southern Albertaarea with the introduction of a new sports medicine clinic and Rebound Health Centre.

"For the past 45 years the U of L has been committed to creating a vibrant campus community that serves the needs of the broader southern Alberta community," says Nancy Walker, vice-president (finance and administration).

"The 1st Choice Savings Centre is a great example of this. By providing outstanding recreational opportunities for people from throughout the area, this building demonstrates the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s commitment to improving the quality of life in Lethbridge and the surrounding area. The addition of the sports medicine clinic furthers this commitment."

The clinic, located in PE100 below the south end of the running track, houses the orthopaedic offices of Drs. Stephen Kwan, Joel Weaver and Martina Frostad, Rebound Health Centre Ltd., Lethbridge Orthotic – Prosthetic Services Ltd. and East Meets West Acupuncture.

"I've always wanted to do something in the way of a sports medicine clinic on the U of L campus," says Kwan.

"We talked about it for a very long time and came up with a model that suits both our group and the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬."

Walker says that the full-service nature of the new clinic meshes well with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s mandate to promote healthy living to the U of L community and beyond.

"We like this fit because they have a good vision for the future that matches our goals with the 1st Choice Savings Centre," says Walker.

"Not only will we be able to provide support for the high performance athletes who train here, but we're able to lead the way in promoting a healthy lifestyle for our faculty, staff and students and the community at large."

<div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast Instead, it's an opportunity for everyone to gather in a recreational setting, all the while raising funds to support KidSport Alberta.

The first incarnation of the fun run/walk was truly an opportunity to introduce the new president to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community but it has grown into so much more over the ensuing two years. Scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22, 11 a.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre, the fun run/walk is an opportunity to mix and mingle with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community, explore campus and bring as many people to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ as possible.

This year, a new 3km course has been added to the original 5km course. It is also stroller friendly, opening the event up to the entire family.

Registration fees for the event are $15 per person with children six and under registering for free. School group rates are also available.

Complete run/walk information is available online at www.uleth.ca/sportrec.

Come out, have fun, and get to know your "U".

Includes: Post-run refreshments, souvenir and a chance to win great prizes!

Proceeds will help support KidSport Alberta.

Registration: Contact Sport and Recreation Services at 403-329-2706

Volunteer: We are also looking for enthusiastic volunteers, so please contact john.sheriff@uleth.ca if you are interested in helping out for the run/walk.

Related Topics

Organization:

1st Choice Savings Centre

Person:

Mike Mahon

PhoneNumber:

403-329-2706

Position:

sheriff

President

URL:

www.uleth.ca/sportrec

Fri, 14 Sep 2012 22:27:16 +0000 trevor.kenney 3653 at /unews
