The issue certainly warrants more in-depth study,&rdquo; says Nicol.</p><p>Housing development is a major economic engine in Alberta, worth about $10.8 billion in 2014. One means of accessing water for new housing is by buying a licensed water allocation through the water market. In this process, a developer is tasked with finding a willing seller of a licensed water allocation, negotiating a price and going through an environmental review process, which has taken up to three years in the past.</p><p>A developer may find it necessary to navigate the water market because no new licensed water allocations have been issued in the Bow, the Oldman and the South Saskatchewan River sub-basins for the past decade. In 2006, Alberta Environment placed a moratorium on accepting applications for new licence allocations after a study showed a number of rivers and river reaches were in distress.</p><p>Water licences are typically held by municipalities, irrigation districts, private irrigators, industrial users, and water co-ops. In Alberta, water is allocated on a first-in-time, first-in-right basis where, if enacted in drought years, priority would be given to those with senior water rights. However, Nicol has found preliminary evidence that, even in normal years, some sectors such as housing developers are facing water challenges due to the way water has historically been allocated under the province&rsquo;s licensing framework.</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m interested in how water moves around among water licence holders and licence seekers,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo; There has to be some elasticity in the system in order for existing licence holders to be able to sell their licence to other individuals, be they towns or industries or housing developers that need the water.&rdquo;</p><p>The water management framework in the region is such that the City of Calgary, before the Bow River basin was closed to additional allocations, obtained enough water licences for three times its current population. However, many communities in the surrounding region did not.</p><p>An additional factor is the Calgary Regional Partnership, which began in 2005 when 18 municipalities came together to develop an overarching land and water management framework. The idea was that Calgary, with its excess water licence capacity, would share its water with communities in need. By 2009, the four rural municipalities involved in the partnership departed. This may have contributed to water challenges being experienced now in Rocky View and the M.D. of Foothills. Okotoks stayed in the partnership and now has a water-sharing agreement with Calgary, but it will require building a pipeline from Calgary to Okotoks at a cost of more than $30 million.</p><p>Nicol plans to interview between 15 and 20 housing developers over the next few months to determine if they are facing any water-related constraints in creating new housing developments, how they manage to gain access to water, the costs involved, how that might affect the price of homes, and the potential impact on the real estate market. She plans to have the results analyzed by September.</p><p>&ldquo;If fewer houses are built, fewer houses will end up coming on the market in future years as those new houses are resold. When new houses are built, they are typically sold by the housing developer but when they are resold they will likely go through a real estate agent,&rdquo; says Nicol. &ldquo; If my study results in more effective management of the water system then it&rsquo;s worthwhile. I&rsquo;m thankful for the funding that&rsquo;s been provided to me and trust the study will be constructive.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/okotoks" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Okotoks</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/city/calgary" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Calgary</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-company-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Company:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/company/alberta-real-estate-foundation" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta Real Estate Foundation</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/dr-lorraine-nicol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Dr. Lorraine Nicol</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="U of L researcher to investigate the challenges of acquiring water for new housing in the Calgary region" class="rdf-meta"></span> Tue, 12 Apr 2016 16:33:33 +0000 caroline.zentner 7974 at /unews Summer time is research time for six local high school students /unews/article/summer-time-research-time-six-local-high-school-students <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>Summer time usually gives high school students a break from learning, but six local students have spent most of their summer getting educated about research instead.</p><p>The Heritage Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) program, funded by Alberta Innovates Health Solutions (AIHS), gives students in Grade 11 the chance to spend six weeks participating in health-related scientific research labs and research centres at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Calgary and the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.</p><p>Grace Forster, who will be entering Grade 12 at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in September, is one of six HYRS students at the U of L this summer. She applied to the HYRS program because she enjoys the sciences and thought the program would help her find out if she enjoys laboratory work and whether she wants to study science after high school.</p><p>She began working in Dr. Gerlinde Metz&rsquo;s lab on July 8, analyzing data from a research study into the effects of travel stress on mice.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:450px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/HYRSmain.jpg" alt=""></div></p><p>&ldquo;We do a lot of stress research in the Metz lab. One of the things that isn&rsquo;t typically controlled very well is shipment stress,&rdquo; says Forster. &ldquo;Almost every laboratory gets animals shipped because most don&rsquo;t have the capacity to maintain breeding colonies that will be big enough. We&rsquo;re essentially looking at how shipment stress affects basic motor function in adult mice.&rdquo;</p><p>To gauge motor function, Forster took measurements of stride length, distance between the hind feet and rotation of the feet in a sample of travel-stressed mice. These measurements were compared to those gathered from a sample of mice bred in house. Forster spent the first three or four weeks completing the data set, which involved a lot of painstaking hand measurements.</p><p>&ldquo;We found that the shipment-stressed animals had significantly shorter stride lengths, which indicates they would have less postural stability and slower walking speeds,&rdquo; says Forster. &ldquo; They would respond differently to the behaviour and motor tests.&rdquo;</p><p>The results show that findings from research studies could be skewed if both in-house mice and shipment-stressed mice are used in the same project. Forster says the results point to a need to use only one kind of mouse in a research project to ensure consistency.</p><p>During the HYRS program, Forster helped out with a variety of other projects, too. She learned how to handle mice, weigh pups and mothers and measure their body circumference. In addition, the HYRS students took part in educational tours, attended brown bag lunches with panels and presentations, and heard from university professors and university students about their scientific careers.</p><p>&ldquo;We had the opportunity to visit the gross anatomy lab in Calgary (the cadaver lab at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Calgary medical school), which was very interesting,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo; That was one of the coolest experiences.&rdquo;</p><p>The HYRS students also had some fun &mdash; Forster&rsquo;s favourite activity was The Great Escape, a live-action, escape-the-room adventure.</p><p>She wouldn&rsquo;t hesitate to recommend the HYRS program to other high school students.</p><p>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think there&rsquo;s anything else like this program that can give high school students the type of experience in the sciences that can make an impact on their university education or their careers,&rdquo; she says.</p><p>Other HYRS students at the U of L include Eyram Asem, a Winston Churchill High School (WCHS) student, who worked in Dr. Robbin Gibb&rsquo;s lab and Kai Bailey, from Chinook High School, who worked in Dr. Bryan Kolb&rsquo;s lab. Kate Chua, from Catholic Central High School (CCHS), spent time in Dr. Robert Sutherland&rsquo;s lab and Anileen Pageni, a WCHS student, worked in Dr. Ute Kothe&rsquo;s lab. During her senior season, Miller finished fifth in SAHBL scoring with 15.7 points per game and was named a league first team all-star. She was also a second team all-star in her grade 11 season.</p><p>At 5&rsquo;10&rdquo;, Miller will also provide some versatility for the &lsquo;Horns with her ability to play both guard and forward and enters her collegiate career with elite level experience with the Provincial and Canadian Centre for Performance (CP) programs. McAleenan was the head coach for the Alberta U17 team last summer for which Miller played.</p><p>A true student-athlete, Miller was on the honour roll throughout her high school career.</p><p>&ldquo;We are thrilled to have the commitment of a local student-athlete such as Mariah,&rdquo; says McAleenan. &ldquo; Her athleticism, size and ability to shoot the ball will all be an asset to our program.&rdquo;</p><p>Also named a SAHBL first team all-star last season, Webster joins the &lsquo;Horns after being a vital member of the Cardston Cougars 4A Provincial Championship team. As the Cougars&rsquo; starting point guard, Webster averaged 11.2 points in 14 league games and was the second leading scorer for the Cougars.</p><p>&ldquo;We are very happy that Larsyn will be joining our program this fall,&rdquo; says McAleenan. &ldquo; She is another local student-athlete with a strong work ethic and is committed to putting in the time outside of practice. Larsyn&rsquo;s ability to shoot the ball and create for others are some of the strengths she adds to our program.&rdquo;</p><p>Vancouver Island Provincial MVP Sara Simovic will also joins the &lsquo;Horns backcourt this season after a stellar senior campaign at Wellington Secondary (Nanaimo, BC). After averaging 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds a game in her final high school season, Simovic played in the B.C. High School All-Star game in Langley.</p><p>She also comes to the &lsquo;Horns with vast elite level experience as part of B.C. Provincial teams from the U14 program up to the U17 age group.</p><p>&ldquo;We are very pleased to have Sara joining our program this fall; she has a high basketball IQ and is a very hard worker,&rdquo; says McAleenan. &ldquo;Sara&rsquo;s determination to be successful will definitely add a lot to our program both on and off the court.&rdquo;</p><p>Another Vancouver Island standout who is making the trip east is G.P. James co-captained her Bishop O&rsquo;Byrne team to a seventh place finish at the 4A Provincial tournament, while averaging more than 10 points and assists per game.</p><p>Another solid student in the classroom, James made the honour roll in both grade 11 and 12.</p><p>&ldquo;Erin is a very well-rounded young lady who brings a strong work ethic and lots of energy to our program,&rdquo; says McAleenan. &ldquo; Her ball-handling abilities and her court-sense make her a great addition to our backcourt.&rdquo;</p><p>The &lsquo;Horns open camp this week and see their first non-conference action during the first week of October with a three-game tournament at Queen&rsquo;s Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. cent more first-year students &ndash; a number which could increase as the final three weeks of registration take place before the start of the school year in September.<br /><br /> To date, 1,116 students just out of high school students are registered to begin classes this fall, attending the U of L from across Alberta, Canada and from around the world.<br /><br /> &quot; We are very pleased to see increases in our high school student enrolments, as it reflects the great work our recruitment team has done over the past year to encourage students to choose the U of L, and Lethbridge, for their post-secondary education experience,&quot; said Dr. Andy Hakin, the U of L&#39;s Provost and Vice-President Academic.<br /><br /> &quot; At this time last year, we recorded 1,002 new high school students. An additional 114 students might not seem like a huge number, but to us it says that more people are recognizing and valuing what the U of L has to offer in terms of our first-rate academic programs and excellent student experience.&quot;<br /><br /> Hakin said the number of students from Calgary continues to increase, alongside students from the immediate Lethbridge area.<br /><br /> &quot; To date, our registrations from students living in Calgary are up nearly 35 per cent over this time last year, and we are also experiencing a 16 per cent increase over last year in local high school students choosing to attend the U of L.<br /><br /> Hakin said recruitment staff members have been following up with students who have been admitted but have not yet formally registered, and are also checking on international students who may be delayed by visa challenges caused by a Canadian foreign service worker strike at international visa processing centres.<br /><br /> &quot;Even with the visa approval issues, we are ahead of last year by more than 40 per cent (or 20 students). We are hopeful that we can help those few remaining international students attend once current visa challenges are resolved.&quot;<br /><br /> Hakin said that these initial statistics indicate the institution is on track to meet its fall registration targets, and anticipates that the U of L will host approximately 8,300 students in the fall.<br /><br /> &quot;A formal enrolment figure is released following a mid-September deadline, to ensure an accurate count of students who have registered late, added courses, or changed programs. These numbers give us a lot of encouragement and enthusiasm as we begin the new school year. We are delighted to be the destination of choice for so many new students.&quot;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/calgary" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Calgary</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/visa-processing-centres" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">visa processing centres</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/andy-hakin" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Andy Hakin</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/academic" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Academic</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/vice-president" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Vice-President</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="First-year registrations up from Lethbridge and Calgary students" class="rdf-meta"></span> Mon, 19 Aug 2013 15:19:23 +0000 trevor.kenney 3436 at /unews Calgary campus students to return to BVC /unews/article/calgary-campus-students-return-bvc <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-43e06920556fdc1a306604394fbd1b19"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">July 19, 2013</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Calgary Campus will be officially moving students and instructors back to Bow Valley College as of Monday, July 22, 2013.
