Educational leader Dr. Jerome Cranston named Distinguished Alumni Award recipient

Respected academic and scholar Dr. Jerome Cranston is working within the system he seeks to change, combatting systemic racism and advancing opportunities for historically marginalized communities in the academic world. His commitment to addressing social inequity and championing diversity has earned him recognition as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association’s (ULAA) 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.

Dr. Jerome Cranston's career has been defined by an unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion and systemic change.

“Dr. Cranston’s work and humanitarian efforts have taken him around the world as he seeks to give voices to those who have historically been silenced,” says Cyndi Crane (BMus ’95, MEd ’01), ULAA president. “His graduate studies at ULethbridge laid the foundation for the important research he has continued throughout his academic career as he has sought to make significant and lasting change in post-secondary education and beyond.”

Cranston will be recognized at Let There Be Light Night, a celebration of alumni achievement, on Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the Science Commons Atrium. Tickets are currently available online.

Dr. Jerome Cranston

Dr. Jerome Cranston (MEd ’98) is a respected educational leader and renowned scholar whose career has been defined by an unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion and systemic change.

A proud graduate of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Master of Education in Educational Leadership program, Cranston now serves as Vice-Provost of Students and Learning at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan, where he brings a student-centred approach to every facet of his work. Driven by a belief that education can be a powerful force for justice, Cranston has built a career focused on dismantling systemic racism and advancing opportunities for historically marginalized communities in academic spaces and beyond.

In 2013, he was credentialed as an academic observer for the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Two years later, his ethnographic work, which focused on stories of Rwandan teachers who survived the 1994 genocide, earned him recognition from the American Educational Research Association’s Peace Education Special Interest Group. His research and humanitarian efforts have taken him to refugee camps to work with displaced Syrians in Lebanon and Bhutanese refugees in Nepal, and he has worked closely with Indigenous and tribal communities in Canada and internationally.

Cranston has travelled widely as a speaker, consulted with school boards and public institutions and mentored the next generation of scholars on the topics of systemic racism and social inequity. During his time as dean of the Faculty of Education at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Regina, he created the first Black and racialized student group at the institution, creating a safe space for students to connect and be mentored by scholars. With five books, more than 50 scholarly and professional publications and more than $350,000 in research and teaching grants, his contributions to academic discourse are extensive. In 2022, he was recognized with an Alumni Honour Award from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta, where he completed his Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science degrees.

Most recently, his 2023 book, Half-caste: Decidedly Brown in a Black or White World, offers a deeply personal exploration of identity, belonging and racialization. His vulnerability opens the door for readers to reflect on their social positioning and engage in the difficult conversations that lead to action.

A true changemaker in Canadian post-secondary education, Cranston continues to use his voice, research and leadership to make academia a welcoming space for all.

Olympian, mentor and teacher, Kacie Bosch, named 2025 Young Alumni Award winner

Never afraid to take her shot, Kacie Bosch (BA ’20, BEd ’25) carved out a basketball career that saw her compete everywhere from local gyms to the international stage, culminating with representing Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics. All the while, Bosch stayed true to her roots, serving as a coach, mentor, leader and inspiring role model. Now a teacher eager to spark dreams in the next generation, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association has named Bosch the 2025 Young Alumni Award winner.

Kacie Bosch was a member of Canada's 3x3 women's national basketball team that placed fourth at the Paris Olympics.

“It was amazing to watch Kacie compete on the world’s biggest stage last summer, both as an athlete and as a humble young woman who has always taken the time to share her journey with young athletes who harbor the same dreams,” says Cyndi Crane (BMus ’95, MEd ’01) ULAA president. “It’s exciting to think of the positive impact she will now have as a teacher, and the lucky students who will benefit from her experiences.”

Kacie Bosch

The sport of basketball has taken Kacie Bosch around the globe, but she has always returned to her Lethbridge roots. Whether on the world stage — like the 2024 Paris Olympics — or in the gyms and classrooms in her hometown, Bosch brings the same leadership, determination and unwavering spirit, serving as an outstanding ambassador for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

After beginning her collegiate career south of the border at Gonzaga ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Bosch chose to return home and join the Pronghorns in 2016. Over four seasons representing the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge on the court she also excelled academically, earning USPORTS Academic All-Canadian honours three times on her way to completing a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 2020.

In 2021, Bosch transitioned to 3x3 basketball, helping elevate the sport to new heights in Canada. Her accomplishments with the Canadian Women’s 3x3 National Team include three FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series championship titles, a pair of FIBA 3x3 World Cup medals and a pivotal role in securing the country’s first-ever Olympic berth in the sport.

Competing on the world’s biggest stage, Bosch and her teammates battled to a hard-fought fourth-place finish in Paris.

Despite her international success, Bosch has never lost sight of where she came from. In 2022, she joined the Pronghorns women’s basketball program as an assistant coach, while also returning to the classrooms of ULethbridge in pursuit of her Bachelor of Education. Central to her values is a deep commitment to mentorship, whether it be guiding the next group of Pronghorns or inspiring the students she teaches and coaches. She can often be found volunteering her time at youth clinics and is a passionate advocate for increasing opportunities for girls in sport.

For her outstanding contributions to her community, she was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025.

Bosch’s story is one of chasing the biggest dreams imaginable, while never losing sight of the people and places that shaped her. Her growing legacy is defined not only by the medals and milestones she’s achieved, but by the youth she’s inspired, the teammates she’s lifted and the belief she’s sparked in others to dream just as boldly.

Alumni Honour Society 2025 inductees working to better their communities

If there’s one theme connecting the four alumni being honoured by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA) with Alumni Honour Society induction, it is that they all have made significant contributions to bettering their communities professionally and in their private lives.

Tammie Belanger (BA ’98), Ashley Day Chief (BASc ’14), Harvey Labuhn (BMgt ’82) and Gianna Magliocco (BFA – New Media ’10) are all being recognized by the ULAA for working to enhance society through caring and understanding.

“It’s quite remarkable to see how these alumni, all in different vocations, have found ways to raise up the people in their communities,” says Cyndi Crane (BMus ’95, MEd ’01), ULAA president. “Each in their own way has utilized their ULethbridge experience to make the world better by showing empathy, establishing relationships and growing a culture of respect and collaboration. They are well deserving of this honour.”

Tammie Belanger is a Chartered Professional Accountant and partner at Ignite CPA LLP who uses her expertise to create local jobs and enhance stability.

With a focus on sustainability, Belanger helps small businesses steady cash flow, hire with confidence and plan for growth. She also invests locally through KFC franchises in Lethbridge, Coaldale, Cardston and Brooks and Pet Valu stores that support more than 120 jobs and create first work experiences for youth.

As a former YWCA Lethbridge Chair and Project Connect organizer, she has completed hundreds of tax returns for low-income residents and people experiencing homelessness, returning refunds and benefits to family budgets.

Her support of community extends to fostering with Windy City Canine Rescue and chairing the City of Lethbridge Animal Welfare Committee.

As a proud First Nations entrepreneur, Day Chief is passionate about empowering others and creating a positive legacy for Indigenous entrepreneurs. Day Chief currently serves on the ULethbridge Senate, contributes to the Town of Raymond’s Truth and Reconciliation committee and recently made history as the first Indigenous Chair of the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce.

Recognized with multiple awards, including the 2023 Young Business Professional Award through Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce and the 2024 Entrepreneur of the Year Award through CETAC West, Day Chief is dedicated to creating lasting impact as a leader, mother and role model.

Harvey Labuhn

Harvey Labuhn

Respected leader Harvey Labuhn has spent over four decades shaping businesses and communities with integrity and vision.

As a chartered accountant, chartered business valuator and partner at Avail CPA, Labuhn championed small business growth, provided trusted valuations and delivered collaborative divorce solutions. His position in firm management allowed him to mentor Ulethbridge graduates into leaders.

Labuhn’s commitment to service extends far beyond his profession. As Chair of the finance committee and vice-Chair of ULethbridge’s Board of Governors, Labuhn strengthened the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s fiscal health during economic challenges. He also devoted years of financial guidance to the Canadian Organization of Rare Disorders and Lethbridge Society for Meals on Wheels. Recently, he and his brother, Roland Labuhn (BMgt ’90), co-founded the Labuhn Family Indigenous Impact Prize at ULethbridge to support Indigenous students.

Gianna Magliocco

Gianna Magliocco

A cinematic force to be reckoned with, Gianna Magliocco is a renowned multidisciplinary filmmaker, photographer and poet known for her bold, compassionate storytelling. Her award-winning work blends bold realism with themes of identity, resilience and social justice.

Drawing on her heritage, Magliocco explores complex human experiences in films like Famiglia, a personal look at her family’s immigration from Ireland to Canada, and her latest documentary follows a former Italian gang member’s search for redemption.

She has also worked on major productions, including Interstellar, The Revenant and A Wrinkle in Time.

Named one of the country’s top emerging producers by the Canadian Media Producers Association in 2020, Magliocco mentors young creators, collaborates with ULethbridge alumni and continues to uplift underrepresented voices through courageous, culturally grounded storytelling.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association, representing nearly 55,000 alumni worldwide, is seeking nominations for its annual suite of awards celebrating the achievements of ULethbridge graduates.

ULethbridge alumni are making valuable contributions to society every day, positively impacting communities locally, provincially, nationally and around the world. Using the knowledge and experience they gained as ULethbridge students, they are achieving personal and professional goals and bettering the world in which we live.

Each year, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ celebrates a host of accomplished alumni, including the recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award, the Young Alumni Award, Alumni Honour Society inductees and the Pronghorn Alumni of the Year. Award recipients are celebrated at the annual Let There Be Light Night, a celebration of alumni achievement, as part of the Fall 2025 Convocation week activities.

“There are so many amazing ULethbridge alumni doing great things, both close to home and around the world. They have stories worth telling — stories about leadership, creativity, and the ways they’re making a difference in their communities,” says Cyndi Crane (BMus ’95, MEd ’01), president of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association. “Through our alumni awards, we get to shine a light on their accomplishments and recognize the meaningful contributions they are making in all kinds of fields. Alumni Achievement Awards

Distinguished Alumni Award
This premier award recognizes alumni whose accomplishments in the public, private or not-for-profit sector have earned national and/or international prominence as a result of their exceptional professional achievements and/or service to society.

Young Alumni Award
This award recognizes young alumni (aged 35 or under) whose accomplishments are of such excellence that they provide inspiration and leadership to ULethbridge students and fellow alumni. The recipient has shown significant leadership either in their professional career and/or community, public or humanitarian service.

Alumni Honour Society
This award recognizes alumni for contributions that demonstrate an extraordinary level of dedication, professionalism, service and/or significance. The Alumni Honour Society is comprised of alumni with diverse skill sets but a shared commitment to excellence across discipline.

Pronghorn Alumni of the Year Award
This award recognizes ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorn alumni excellence, leadership and innovation in their contributions to the social, cultural and economic well-being of our communities.

Remembering Dean Gallimore

Dean Gallimore (BMgt ’84) was the consummate professional. A respected member of the southern Alberta business community, he was a decorated chartered professional accountant leading one of the top accounting firms in the city. What he will be remembered for was how he leveraged his professional accomplishments to effect long-lasting change in his community, advocate for post-secondary education and create pathways to success for the next generation of students.

Dean Gallimore was appointed the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's 11th Board of Governors Chair in 2022.

Gallimore, Chair Emeritus of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors, passed away on Sunday, April 6, at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary at the age of 63. His passing is a profound loss to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, to those who worked alongside him and to the students he ensured had a voice in the governance of the institution.

“The loss of Dean has deeply impacted many people in our community and for me it is especially painful as he was one of the first people I got to know well as the Chair of the search committee when I was hired as president and vice-chancellor,” says Dr. Digvir Jayas. “His generosity, warmth and humility showed me from the beginning that this was a place and an atmosphere I wanted to be involved in, and in my time working with him since, his sincerity for supporting the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and its people always shone through.”

Gallimore, an alumnus of the Faculty of Management (now Dhillon School of Business) was born in Edmonton and raised in Lethbridge, attending Winston Churchill High School before beginning a family legacy by attending the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Both he and his wife Bev (BA ’85, BMgt ’87) graduated from ULethbridge and their daughters, Lauren (BMgt ’15) and Amanda (BSc/BEd ’19), followed in their footsteps as alums.

Education was extremely important to Gallimore, and he was eager to give back to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ through volunteer work and as a philanthropist, crediting his time as a student as the starting point of his professional success.

“Having my spouse, and two children also as alums, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has always been a big part of my life and helped launch my career here in southern Alberta,” Gallimore said on being appointed the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s 11th Board Chair in 2022. “Its connection to community as a partner and driver of commerce and innovation is something that is continually expanding and I’m excited to help steward in the coming years.”

He would make students a central focus during his time as Board Chair, advocating for student priorities and ensuring student representatives on the Board were heard. He welcomed student representation on the ULethbridge Budget Advisory Committee in 2021-22 as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ engaged in critical financial planning discussions.

“The entire student community is deeply saddened by this loss,” says Maleeka Thomas, President of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students’ Union. “Dean Gallimore was a tireless champion for student causes at our university.”

Always a champion of student initiatives, here he is in the hot tub after taking a cold dip supporting the annual Chillin' for Charity fundraiser.

His time as Board Chair saw Gallimore involved in several major initiatives, including crucial work on the Budget Advisory Committee that tapped into Gallimore’s vast financial acumen as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ continued to navigate its substantial budget challenges. ULethbridge’s major fundraising campaign for student scholarship support was initiated under his watch and the Board’s significant matching campaign, where the Board pledged $10 million in match funds for the establishment of new endowed student scholarships, was also created. The long sought Southern Alberta Medical Program (SAMP) was also realized, with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s first medical students slated to begin their training on campus in June 2026. Most recently, Gallimore was excited to help launch the ULethbridge Strategic Plan.

In 2023, the family established the Gallimore Family Scholarship, an endowed scholarship in support of outstanding students pursuing undergraduate education in the management field. Upon his passing, a specific scholarship is being established in his memory. Due to his personal passion and involvement in the establishment of SAMP and the outstanding care he received from the medical team at Foothills Hospital, the endowed scholarship will support students pursuing medical training at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Contributions to the Dean Gallimore Memorial Scholarship, which will be matched by the Board’s matching program, can be made here.

“Working on these various initiatives with Dean leading the way, he always had a clear vision of our mandate and how we could better support students so that they would be able to excel in their studies,” says Toby Boulet (BEd ’89, MEd ’04), a fellow Board of Governors representative. “His authenticity and willingness to lead by example really set a tone for the work we were doing, and I’m grateful for the time we spent together. That he was also proud of being an organ donor and was always eager to support our family as we raised awareness around organ donations, suits his incredible character.”

As an organ and tissue donor, Gallimore saved three lives and improved the quality of life for countless others upon his passing.

Gallimore’s professional achievements were many and his financial acumen was a major asset to his various roles with the Board of Governors. He spent 28 years with local accounting firm KPMG, the final 12 years as the office managing partner before retiring in 2012. An Alberta bronze medalist who placed on the Canadian Honour Role for the 1986 Uniform Final Examinations (having placed in the top 20 of approximately 3,600 candidates), his portfolio at KPMG consisted largely of primary agriculture, agriculture services and agriculture processing clients, as well as many other industries.

Deeply respected by his peers, Gallimore received the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta Distinguished Service Award (2001) and was honoured as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (2008). In 2009, he was named to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Alumni Honour Society.

“In working with Dean these past few years, we spoke a lot about relationships and specifically building bridges between the Board of Governors and the faculty,” says Dr. Craig Coburn, a Board member and professor in the Department of Geography & Environment. “He worked hard to create a space where we could talk about some very difficult issues in a respectful and constructive manner, and I think we made great strides in terms of understanding each other and moving forward.”

Gallimore was also deeply committed to strengthening his community, giving time to several organizations and chairing such committees as the Chartered Accountants of Alberta Education Foundation, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Planned Giving Advisory Committee and Faculty of Management Advisory Committee. He first joined the ULethbridge Board of Governors in 2019 and, among his other duties, was Chair of the Finance Committee.

The culmination of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Strategic Plan launch marked a major milestone in Gallimore's tenure as Board Chair.

“Dean was someone I admired for embodying all that ULethbridge alumni aspire to be,” says Cyndi Crane (BMus ’95, MEd ’01), president of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association. “He made the most of his ULethbridge education, excelling as a student and going on to be a respected, highly successful member of the business community. He also understood how he could contribute to his community beyond his professional role and embraced volunteering, philanthropy and seeking ways to make people’s lives better, all while raising a caring and engaged family with his wife Bev. He will be deeply missed.”

Terry Whitehead (BA ’94) joined his fellow alum in a leadership position in 2023 when he was appointed ULethbridge Chancellor. He says the passion with which Gallimore advocated for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ was ever present.

“He truly believed in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, what it had provided for him and his family and how it was creating graduates who were making a real difference in the world,” says Whitehead. “He cared about people, he cared about his community, and I’ll miss our conversations, his warm smile and his generosity of spirit. He was a wonderful man whose impact was significant in every aspect of his life. Dean will be forever admired and deeply missed by all who knew him.”

Faculty of Fine Arts launches Vibe Fest, inviting community support and participation

Vibe Festival to showcase Faculty of Fine Arts programming and student, alumni and faculty talent in free, community event

For one night only, the doors of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Centre for the Arts will open to the community for a showcase of the talent and artistry of fine arts students, alumni and faculty — highlighting the Centre for the Arts as a hub of creative talent in Lethbridge and southern Alberta.

The Vibe Festival (Vibe Fest) promises a playful, immersive celebration of contemporary art, performance and creative technologies. Running from 7 to 11 p.m. on Apr. 12, 2025, the Faculty of Fine Arts Vibe Fest will feature a free, all-access community arts celebration.

“Vibe Fest is an opportunity to celebrate the innovative work our students, alumni and faculty create,” says Faculty of Fine Arts Dean, Dr. Heather Davis-Fisch. “Attendees will experience the full scope of emerging contemporary art practice in southern Alberta and can immerse themselves in interactive and participatory experiences including installations, performances, live music, soundscapes, film and digital media.”

In addition to celebrating student achievement, Vibe Fest attendees can explore the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Centre for the Arts’ outstanding learning and creative facilities that are often hidden from public view: studios, exhibition spaces, digital cinema suites, workshops, recording studios and more.

The Faculty of Fine Arts seeks to inspire imaginative, intellectual culture among students, employees and communities. It offers students a comprehensive education with world-class instruction and positions its graduates as change-makers and future leaders in the local, national and global arts communities.

With an anticipated audience of more than 800 people, Vibe Fest will be Fine Arts’ highlight event of the year, spotlighting the Faculty’s artistry and contributions to the wider community, cultivating community support and building advocacy for arts-based education and programming. Adding to the excitement of Vibe Fest, the Faculty of Fine Arts is pleased to announce the much-anticipated revival of Abbondànza. The ticketed fundraising dinner will take place the same night.

“The Faculty of Fine Arts is a central part of the arts ecosystem in southern Alberta, giving students outstanding learning experiences and transferable skills, and providing the community with arts educators, creative practitioners and cultural sector workers,” says Davis-Fisch. “Our hope is for the community to partner with us to celebrate fine arts students’ achievements and the contributions our graduates make to the community.”

Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce CEO and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association President, Cyndi Crane (BMus ’95, MEd ’01), says Vibe Fest will celebrate the established and emerging creative talent that exists in Lethbridge and southern Alberta and affirm the importance of arts education and programming.

“The arts have played a significant role in my own life, and I know I’m not alone,” says Crane, a trained pianist and alumna of ULethbridge’s music program. “Vibe Fest presents an incredible opportunity for individuals and local businesses who value the arts to get involved, either as sponsors or participants, to support the innovative, cultural programming taking place right here in southern Alberta.”

The Faculty of Fine Arts is seeking corporate sponsors, individual philanthropists and community partners for Vibe Fest 2025 and Abbondànza. Buy A Student A Breakfast campaign can make all the difference

Sometimes it’s the smaller gestures that result in the biggest impact. As ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students gear up for late night study sessions and stressful final exams — a free breakfast and an encouraging note can make all the difference.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s annual Giving Tuesday campaign — Buy A Student A Breakfast (BASAB) — begins tomorrow when students at both ULethbridge’s Lethbridge and Calgary campuses can pick up coupons purchased by thoughtful supporters. A pledge of just $6 buys a coupon redeemable for one breakfast sandwich and a piece of fruit at Urban Market (Lethbridge campus) or a breakfast sandwich with a small coffee or tea at the Tim Hortons in the Centre for Sport and Wellness. Calgary campus students will receive Tim Hortons gift cards.

“Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and community supporters, we were able to purchase 1,037 breakfasts for students last year,” says Cyndi Crane (BMus '95, MEd '01), ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association president. “I’m really looking forward to handing out coupons on Wednesday, along with many other alumni and supporters from the community. I remember as a student how stressful it can get at this time of year.”

Student food security has been an ongoing issue in recent years and as food prices continue to rise, so too has the financial pressure on students. This is even more acute toward the end of a semester.

“It might not sound like much — one free meal — but it’s so much more than the $6 pledge, rather it’s an acknowledgment that they are part of a community that values their well-being and wants to see them flourish and succeed,” adds Crane.

The BASAB campaign has been collecting donations in advance of Giving Tuesday so that alumni and community volunteers would be ready to begin giving out coupons this week. This gives students more time to redeem the gifts before end of semester.
