Deirdre McKenna (BA ’94), a partner at Davidson & Williams LLP, has assumed the role of president of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA).

“We are so pleased to welcome Deirdre as the new ULAA president,” says Lyndsay Montina, director of Alumni Relations and Operations. “The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge now has more than 50,000 alums all over the world and the president plays an important role in keeping them connected both to their alma mater and to current students. As a resident of Lethbridge, Deirdre is the perfect person to maintain and nourish those connections.”

McKenna is the daughter of former Dhillon School of Business professor Dr. Ian McKenna, who passed away in 2017. Her family moved to Lethbridge from the United Kingdom when McKenna was 13 years old. She completed high school at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in 1988 and began her post-secondary education at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge without a firm idea of a future career in mind.

“I definitely had a worthwhile experience at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge,” she says. “I took full advantage of the liberal education the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ had to offer. I took a diverse set of classes and changed my major three or four times. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ really nurtured my curiosity for many kinds of topics.”

She went from majoring in history to religious studies and even toyed with the idea of political science before choosing philosophy.

“The structure of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the teachers — they really encouraged and supported that exploration. That certainly helped me to excel in law school and be able to adapt to something totally new in pursuing a legal education,” she says.

McKenna has served as a director with ULAA for the past year, so she’s familiar with the association and its activities.

“One of my children is at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ right now and it’s been a really challenging time for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ,” she says. “I wanted to be a part of the group of people that would work hard at continuing to keep the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as a positive place of learning. That’s probably what encouraged me to take a more public role with the alumni association. I want to encourage alumni to re-engage with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community, in particular the students, to help make sure they have the same great experience many of us had when we were students here. I think alumni can be an important resource for students.”

Alumnus Turner earns TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Fellowship in Advancement

An engaged and enthusiastic leader who founded and served as the first president of PACT (Philanthropy, Advancement, Community and Traditions) at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has earned a 2021 TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Fellowship in Advancement.

Kierian Turner (BMus ‘20), a graduate of the Digital Audio Arts program in the Department of Music, is currently working as an alumni engagement assistant in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Advancement office. The TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Fellowship provides funding to support his position for a further 12-month term, and strongly emphasizes the professional growth of each fellow, ensuring the strength of tomorrow’s advancement professionals. Turner is one of only two recipients selected from across the country to receive the award and the second U of L student in the past three years (Karissa Hartley (BA ’18)).

Turner initially began working as a caller in the student call centre. He has excelled in student engagement, relationship-building and event management. In leading the establishment of PACT, Turner spurred the group’s executive to develop and execute two new programs that supported the connection between students and alumni and promoted young alumni giving.

“I learned a great deal during my inaugural PACT presidency, but perhaps the greatest revelation was the degree to which our community is eager to give back time, talent and treasure to offer support to students,” he says. “This shared belief will be the guiding light of my fellowship, especially as members of our ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community look to one another for support during this especially difficult year.”

Turner has quickly grown into his role with Advancement and brings a full slate of talents to the team.

“His knowledge of the inner-workings of Advancement combined with his cross-institutional experience are just what we need to steward the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ towards a culture of philanthropy,” says Lyndsay Montina, manager, Alumni Relations. “Kierian is an exceptional young leader with unmatched enthusiasm, and I can guarantee he is worthy of this fellowship.”

Turner was the 2020 Department of Music Most Distinguished Graduate and won multiple scholarship awards, including: 2019 MusiCounts Scholarship; 2019 Fine Arts Shining Student and 2019 Arts & Science Shining Student; 2018 Joyce & Ron Sakamoto prize for Research and Development in Digital Audio Arts.

Turner is excited to lay the groundwork for the creation of a culture of philanthropy amongst students, beginning with a research project that will ultimately inform a student engagement plan tied to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Annual Day of Giving. The proposed project will be foundational in building an environment where students understand, celebrate and engage with philanthropy while simultaneously building stronger affinity.

U of L partners with TD Life and Health Insurance

For more than a dozen years, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has received support from TD Insurance. The long-standing TD Home and Auto Insurance partnership provides U of L alumni with special benefits and privileges, and the program’s total contributions to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ are valued at nearly $1 million.

“Since 2008, TD Insurance has supported ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge alumni, faculty, staff and students with exclusive rates on home and auto insurance and $953,000 in sponsorship,” says Lyndsay Montina, manager of Alumni Relations. “The sponsorship from TD Insurance has been instrumental in the development and growth of programming that supports alumni and student engagement.”

The new sponsorship agreement is through the TD Life and Health Insurance Affinity Program and gives ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge alumni premium savings on eligible TD Term Life Insurance. Alumni are eligible to apply for life insurance with TD Term Life Insurance and may be approved for up to $500,000 in coverage.

“This is a significant opportunity for our alumni to feel confident knowing life insurance coverage can help protect their family’s financial future,” adds Montina. “That the TD Life and Health Insurance Affinity Program also supports alumni activities is a win-win situation.”

U of L recognized with international communications and marketing awards

The Advancement and Enrolment Services teams at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge received some impressive recognition as part of the 2020 Best of CASE VIII Awards competition. In total, the teams took home four Best of CASE awards, a Rising Star Award and an Opportunity and Inclusion Scholarship.

Gold award for the uLethbridge SHINE Video Series in the Marketing & Branding Video category

Through compelling stories of students, researchers and community members, the SHINE Video Series illustrates the significance the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has in southern Alberta and the magnitude of what can be accomplished when individuals work together. Produced by U of L's Strategic Communications and Airau Marketing, the SHINE Video Series consists of four videos: Education Changes the World; Lighting the Way: Alzheimers Research at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge; Shining New Light on Potato Research; and Chess for Life.

Gold award for Buy a Student Breakfast in the Alumni/Constituent Relations category

To help ease the stressful nature of final exam season, the Alumni Relations and Annual Giving offices launched the Buy A Student Breakfast Campaign. For $10, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community members could purchase two breakfasts, which students could collect during the final exam period. The excitement for this project was so widespread that the scope of impact was magnified beyond the original goals.

Silver award for the Alumni Welcome Booklet in the Alumni Publications category

At each convocation ceremony in Spring and Fall 2019, new alumni received a copy of the Alumni Welcome Booklet. The booklet included a welcome to the alumni community, a list of alumni benefits, fun ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ facts, ways to stay connected and more, all while maintaining a celebratory and welcoming voice. Keeping an informal tone, the booklet aimed to build pride in the institution while ensuring a memorable point of contact with each new member of the alumni family. Bronze award for the 2019-20 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Viewbook in the Viewbooks and Prospective Student Publications category

The 2019-20 edition of the viewbook combines artful storytelling, photography and design to bring to life a narrative that reaches prospective students and advances the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s recruitment efforts. By highlighting program information in a way that captures the essence of the student experience at uLethbridge, the viewbook stands out to future students and their families. In Fall 2019, undergraduate student enrolment grew to a record 8,326 students, an increase of 2.1 per cent. A total of 4,613 inquiries can be tied directly to the viewbook as the first point of contact. This is the third consecutive year that the viewbook has been recognized. Lyndsay Montina (BMgt ’09), Manager of Alumni Relations, was recognized at the conference with a Rising Star Award. These awards honour individuals with three to five years of experience in the Advancement profession who are making significant impacts as leaders in their field. This year, Lyndsay was among four outstanding individuals who were recognized.

Opportunity and Inclusion Scholarship

Karissa Hartley

Karissa Hartley (BA ’18), alumni engagement coordinator, received an Opportunity and Inclusion Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage professionals in underrepresented populations or those with less than four years of experience in the field of advancement to attend the conference. Karissa was one of 14 individuals to receive a 2020 scholarship.

Since 2010, CASE has recognized the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge with 13 Best of CASE awards. The Best of CASE VIII Awards included submissions of marketing and communications materials from colleges and universities of all sizes in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan and Yukon, as well as the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Less than a year into her role as alumni engagement coordinator for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Karissa Hartley (BA ’18) has made quite the impression.

Overseeing the development of alumni programming initiatives, including the expansion of the alumni chapters program and the creation of an alumni Instagram account, has equipped this young alumna with the skillset and passion necessary to create lasting impact.

Her hard work is not going unnoticed, and Hartley was recently selected as a recipient of the TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Fellowship in Advancement. The fellowship provides funding to support the position for a 12-month term, and strongly emphasizes the professional growth of each fellow, ensuring the strength of tomorrow’s advancement professionals. As one of only two recipients selected each year, the magnitude of this recognition is not lost on Hartley.

“This fellowship is a complete game-changer for my career,” says Hartley. “The people I’ll meet and the things I’ll learn over the next year will challenge me to be the best I can be in this field.”

Hartley first got a taste for work in Advancement – specifically in Alumni Relations and Communications – through an applied study she completed in the last year of her undergraduate degree. She hosted focus groups with alumni and students as part of the 2017 Needs Assessment and now spends her time turning that data into actionable change.

“Karissa has proven herself to be a valuable member of our team over the last year,” says Lyndsay Montina, the manager of Alumni Relations and Hartley’s supervisor. “She is incredibly deserving of this recognition.”

Throughout her fellowship year, Hartley will lead in the creation of an alumni communications suite, which includes producing a podcast and developing a program for sharing alumni-curated content and articles. With this suite, alumni will contribute their ideas, stories and experiences to the larger U of L community, bringing a voice to the label “alumni.”

Buy a Student Breakfast program takes off

What started as a small idea grew into a campus-wide initiative that resulted in more than 700 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students receiving a free breakfast this week.

The Buy a Student Breakfast program started with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Office of Alumni Relations as a way to engage its alumni with the current U of L student body. As semester-end projects are due and final exams approach, the idea was to find a way to give students a little pick-me-up from those who had lived the student lifestyle and could appreciate the stress they were feeling.

“It can be a tough time of year for students, they are facing a lot of demands and a lot of pressure, and we thought this was a way to show them that there are people thinking of them and looking out for them,” says Lyndsay Montina, manager, Alumni Relations. “It started so well, we expanded it to the entire ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community.”

For a $10 donation, people were able to buy two students a breakfast sandwich and a large coffee or tea from the Campus Coffee Company in the Students’ Union Building. Earlier this week, volunteers handed out the purchased vouchers to students as they made their way to classes. Students then expressed their thanks via social media and the hashtag #thanksabrunch.

“It may have been a small gesture but for some students, it really meant the world and showed them that they are part of a community that’s invested in helping them achieve their goals,” adds Montina.

Entrepreneur and OUTPUT Media founder Bryn Hewko named 2018 Young Alumnus of the Year

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA) is thrilled to honour recent Faculty of Fine Arts New Media graduate Bryn Hewko (MFA ’16) with the 2018 Young Alumnus of the Year award.

Hewko is the founder of OUTPUT Media, a successful start-up company he began while still finishing his master’s studies at the U of L.

“A bright, engaging and innovative entrepreneur, Bryn Hewko has already made huge inroads into the cinema industry and worked with some long trusted and recognizable brands,” says Matthew McHugh, Chair of the ULAA Recognition Committee. “Further, he has had a great influence on many new media students and recent grads by giving them access to his company through internship and employment opportunities. We’re really excited to see what the future holds for Bryn and OUTPUT Media given the successes he’s already achieved.”

Bryn Hewko (MFA ’16) didn’t wait to finish his graduate studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge before launching into the business world, rather he completed his degree while founding a successful start-up company. With a diverse skill set and a relentless work ethic, he has quickly made a name for himself in the cinematic industry, all the while giving back to his community and creating opportunity for the next generation of U of L graduates.

Hewko broke new ground in crafting his Master of Fine Arts thesis, exploring both in theory and practice novel ways to use virtual reality technology in a cinematic context. The work inspired a new way of looking at cinema and spawned his highly successful business venture, OUTPUT Media. A studio that uses virtual reality along with a suite of technology to help brands make compelling content, OUTPUT’s client list has grown rapidly since launch, having worked on projects for recognized companies such as Heineken, Nutella, Ferrero Rocher and Campbell’s.

OUTPUT media is not only breaking new ground in cinema, it is also serving as a valuable training ground for students currently studying new media at the U of L. Hewko is dedicated to creating a sustainable local cultural sector that will attract and retain skilled artists and designers. To that end, he has made it a priority for OUTPUT to make annual internship opportunities available for new media students, providing them with valuable hands-on industry experience. He also recently hired two new media alumni who went through the internship program, keeping talented young individuals in the city.

Hewko regularly shares his industry experience with students, giving presentations at events such as the Faculty of Fine Arts Crossing Boundaries Art & Technology Symposium, the Digital Vertigo New Media Symposium and the RCB Small Business Summit. He also regularly guest lectures in new media classes and makes himself readily available to aspiring entrepreneurs.

Hewko will be honoured at 2018 Fall Convocation on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 10 a.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gymnasium.

From passionate songwriters to dedicated educators and more, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA) is pleased to induct six new members into the Alumni Honour Society.

“Our six inductees this year represent a wide range of skills but they are united in that they are all passionate about their roles and have all made an immeasurable difference in their communities,” says Matthew McHugh, Chair of the ULAA Recognition Committee. “We’re proud of their accomplishments and how they have built off their U of L educations and given back to their communities in such substantial ways.”

Introduced in honour of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s 35th Anniversary in 2002, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association established the Alumni Honour Society to recognize the achievements of a select group of alumni each year. The individuals honoured serve as role models through success in their vocation, outstanding community service or superior accomplishment in their avocation.

Like those before them, the 2018 inductees are outstanding examples of U of L alumni. Each of the individuals used the knowledge they gained at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to achieve their personal and professional goals, and through these achievements has left a lasting impact on the people, organizations and communities with which they are involved.

The group will be inducted into the Alumni Honour Society and celebrated at Let There Be Light Night, on Friday, October 12, 2018.

Trevor Clark |BMgt ’99

Trevor Clark has built a career helping others by providing compassionate leadership in emergency situations. After graduating from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Management in International Management, he went on to complete his Master of Arts in International Conflict Analysis. He now works for the United Nations leading humanitarian and development responses in some of the most fragile countries on the planet. He is well-respected as an exceptional program manager with the ability to bring teams together to provide sound resolutions for both individuals and the organizations they serve.

Dinah Davis | BSc ’02

Bringing education, passion and enthusiasm to all she does, Dinah Davis is recognized as a leader in the field of Information Technology. After graduating from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, she continued her education by completing a Master of Mathematics Degree in Cryptography, the practice of secure digital communication. She is currently the Vice-President of Research and Development at Arctic Wolf Networks, a cybersecurity start-up. In addition to her professional responsibilities, she is a passionate advocate for young women in technology-related fields and founded codelikeagirl.io to actively empower women to become leaders in the industry. Davis is an inspirational mentor, an exceptional role model to women worldwide, and a strong advocate for gender equality.

John Wort Hannam | BA/BEd ’96

Recognized internationally for his melodies and moving lyrics, John Wort Hannam is an award-winning singer/songwriter based in Lethbridge. His music is deeply rooted in the people, images and landscapes of southern Alberta. Frequently called upon to perform at community events and fundraisers, he lends his talent and support to various charitable and social causes. In 2017, his song Let It Shine On was commissioned to celebrate the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s 50th anniversary.

Kristina Larkin | BA/BEd ’12

Kristina Larkin is passionate about education and community involvement. She is an active volunteer and community organizer, and currently supports over 400 immigrant and refugee children and youth through her role as Manager of Youth Settlement Services at Lethbridge Family Services. Larkin is committed to using her education to affect change in her community and has been involved with many organizations, including the Westminster Neighbourhood Association, the Rotary Club of Lethbridge Urban Spirits, Womanspace Resource Centre, and the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group. Larkin is recognized as a role model with the ability to empower individuals through community education, igniting a spark for social justice unlike any other.

Dale Ptycia | BASc (BA) ’85

Dale Ptycia was the first of his family to pursue post-secondary education and credits his time at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge as the foundation to his success in the business of sport. Centering around his deep love for hockey, Dale began his career with Hockey Canada as a coach and instructor. Over his 30 years with the organization, he has excelled and evolved from Program Manager to the Senior Manager of Licensing and Merchandising. Ptycia maintains a strong commitment to giving back to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ that enabled him to align his career with his passion.

Shanda Webber (née Venier) | BA ’05

Shanda Webber (née Venier) has become a role model in the Indigenous community for both her research and volunteer work. As a student, she was an advocate for increasing access and enhancing resources to assist First Nations, Métis and Inuit students build connections, encouraging success among her peers. Professionally, her work focuses on assisting prospective students transition to the post-secondary environment as well as, developing and enhancing academic and cultural support services for Indigenous learners. She is currently the Manager of Recruitment and Indigenous Services at Lethbridge College.

Flexahopper Plastics president Bill Spenceley named 2018 Alumnus of the Year

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA) is excited to announce Bill Spenceley (BSc ’81), president and owner of Flexahopper Plastics Ltd., as the 2018 Alumnus of the Year.

“Bill is an exceptional representation of how influential ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge alumni are in our community and in communities throughout the world,” says Lyndsay Montina, manager, Alumni Relations. “He is a very successful businessman who has made a huge difference in the plastics industry and, beyond that, has continued to support the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ through research partnerships and investments. We’re thrilled to be able to honour him with the Alumnus of the Year.”

Alumnus of the Year – Bill Spenceley

A business leader with a strong research background, alumnus Bill Spenceley (BSc ’81) has guided his local company to worldwide success, all while taking a leading role in environmental sustainability and empowering the next generation of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students through collaborative projects and ventures.

Spenceley originally planned to be a dentist and was enrolled in the pre-dentistry program when he discovered chemistry was his true calling. After completing his studies in the U of L’s Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, including a joint year of undergraduate work in Chemical Engineering at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta, Spenceley took on the role of Director of Design Engineering at Flexahopper Plastics Ltd. In five short years, he was the General Manager/Director of Design Engineering and by 1995 he was President of the company and then principal owner three years later.

During that time, Spenceley grew Flexahopper into one of the largest processors of rotational molding products in the Pacific Northwest, exporting products worldwide from its headquarters in the Lethbridge Industrial Park. Believing that sustainability is good business practice, Spenceley’s company has been at the forefront of environmental initiatives in the plastics industry.

As a proud U of L alumnus, Spenceley often returns to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to give undergraduate lectures and has served as a judge for the annual Chinook Research Symposium, lending valuable community and industrial perspective to the event. More recently, Spenceley worked closely with members of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry on a successful polymer characterization research grant that will further study of the structure and properties of polymers and be of great benefit to industry. His company’s investment in the process helped secure the grant and bring to life the U of L’s new polymer characterization laboratory, which promises to have a profound impact on the plastics industry in years to come.

Spenceley will be honoured at 2018 Fall Convocation on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 10 a.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gymnasium.

Canada’s centennial university is turning 50 this year and is calling all alumni and friends of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge to come home to celebrate, September 1-3 at Homecoming 2017.

What began as a dream in 1967 has grown into one of Canada’s top-ranked universities and leading research institutions. The U of L has had a remarkable journey in 50 short years, and now boasts more than 41,000 alumni worldwide. Homecoming 2017 is part of a milestone year of celebrations and with a weekend of activities that has a little bit of something for everyone, promises to be the biggest party yet.

“The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge grew out of the hearts and minds of a determined group of citizens and over the past 50 years has played a major role in helping shape Lethbridge and the southern Alberta community as a whole,” says U of L President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon. “We’re excited to invite all friends of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to this once-in-a-lifetime celebration. We have grown and matured together these past 50 years and it’s fitting that we celebrate this milestone as one community.”

The three-day event begins with the John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, September 1, followed by the Ignite the Weekend Welcome Reception featuring Lethbridge's own, The Chevelles. Saturday’s activities include opportunities to explore campus, reconnect with classmates and professors at reunions, and take in the AlumX Speaker Series, hands-on workshops and a historic Blackfoot Naming Ceremony & Presentation.

The Shine On Summer Festival then gets underway Saturday afternoon, featuring Dallas Smith, Corb Lund, Washboard Union and Millz Skillz. Two more bands will soon be added to the first-ever outdoor concert at the U of L Community Stadium, and it all wraps up with a fireworks extravaganza by the National Canadian Fireworks team.

On Sunday, enjoy a summer afternoon celebrating arts, culture and community. The Shine On Summer Festival Community Fair features a Battle of the Bands, food trucks, craft market, Insane Inflatables race, multicultural demonstrations, FNMI Round Dance, rugby exhibition tournament, family activities, beer gardens and more!

“We have put together a lineup of events and attractions we think will appeal to everyone in the family,” says Lyndsay Montina, manager of Alumni Relations. “Whether you are coming back to campus as an alumnus, former student, faculty or staff member or experiencing the U of L for the first time, this is a great opportunity to see all that the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has become in just 50 short years.”
