Putting science on display

February 7 is National Periodic Table Day. To celebrate, the U of L is asking for your help to put science on display with an interactive, physical periodic table for the new Science and Academic Building. 

The Periodic Table Display project aims to bring the elements to life, sparking interest and conversation for generations of visitors to the new building. 

Members of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry are keen to support the Periodic Display Table project.

A group of former staff and faculty members and current faculty members initiated the project and have already shown their support. 

Dr. Peter Dibble, Chair, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, says the addition of a periodic table of the calibre that is being donated will really put science on display for southern Alberta. 

“I know of other institutions that have these tables and they are magnets to members of the public because they are so interesting and beautiful to look at,” says Dibble. “I think this display will become a regular stop for elementary and high school classes and I intend to develop programs, such as element days, that will feed into such visits and offer members of the public and students to learn about specific elements, how they are used and why they are so important.”

For Dibble, he believes that there is something special in the moment when you first lay your eyes on exactly what an element looks and feels like. Dibble says the feeling ignited by seeing this piece of science is perhaps best summarized by British neurologist, naturalist and author Oliver Sacks.

Shine On Scholarships making an indelible impression

As the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge wraps up a year of 50th anniversary celebrations, the recipients of the Shine On 50th Anniversary Fund scholarships have been awarded. Established to celebrate the U of L’s golden anniversary, the scholarships exemplify alumni, staff, faculty and community coming together to help students shine brighter.

U of L students, Christina Vanderkwaak, Nora White, Nichole Giokas, Gavin Broadhead Sara Harker and Jaclyn Knol, are among the first recipients of the Shine On 50th Anniversary Fund Scholarship.

The first 10 students have been awarded scholarships. We caught up with a few of them, and they offer these words:

"I’m extremely grateful and honoured to have received the Shine On Scholarship. Scholarship support has allowed me to go through my academic journey with less weight on my shoulders and fewer worries about expenses. Education is so important and because of scholarships like this and the donors who contribute, education can be more accessible and attainable for many individuals. I’m incredibly appreciative of the generous donors who have helped to support my schooling and provided me with the resources to succeed. Thank you so much to all the donors who made this possible."

There are many opportunities to effect change, love and impact people without a formal education. However, the avenues I would like to pursue to couple these passions with legal advocacy are achieved through educational studies, time and hard work. Additionally, within the educational system itself lie great opportunities for personal growth, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to experience and grow in these areas. These also carry a high cost, which is why I am sincerely grateful to have been chosen to receive the Shine On Scholarship. This scholarship has lifted some pressure, which as a student in an environment of multi-faceted pressure-points, is really welcome. It has also spurred me on in the midst of new challenges. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.”

The Shine On Scholarships fund will “shine on” into future with the hope that it will become endowed .

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is excited to come together to celebrate all it has accomplished over the past 50 years, and, with a keen eye on the future, has established the Shine On: U of L 50th Anniversary Fund as a means to help the students of today become the leaders of tomorrow.

Created as a scholarship fund, all money raised for the Shine On: U of L 50th Anniversary Fund goes directly to support student scholarships, providing greater opportunities for student success.

“For some students, scholarships are the very reason they can continue their academic journeys. For others, scholarships allow them to focus on their studies rather than working part-time jobs,” says Chris Horbachewski, vice-president, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Advancement. “Scholarships help build confidence, they send a message to students that others believe in them enough to support their academic journeys.”

Blair Yoxall, a fourth-year English major, says that scholarship support has meant a world of difference in his studies.

“I have been extremely fortunate to receive many scholarships while at the U of L. These scholarships have truly given me the opportunity to focus on my schooling as my job so that I can devote more time to my studies and less time panicking about paying rent or school fees,” he says. “Scholarships have also made me so much more confident in my abilities and make me want to succeed for the donors who generously funded the scholarships I received.”

The Shine On: U of L 50th Anniversary Fund will launch at the kick-off event to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Founders’ Day Weekend. In addition to giving online, a 50 Hours of Giving campaign that begins at noon on Friday, January 13 will allow, for the first time ever, supporters of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to show their support through a text-to-give initiative.

“As we set the campaign in motion, the 50 Hours of Giving will allow everyone the opportunity to participate by texting their support,” says Barry Knapp, director of the Development Office in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Advancement. “This gives everyone a chance to get involved and help support the Shine On fund and our students. Every donation to this fund will go directly to student scholarships, and it will be exciting to watch the support grow throughout the weekend as we track the texts and online gifts coming in.”

To participate in the 50 Hours of Giving event, text SHINEON plus your full name and email address to 45678 beginning at noon on Friday. Gifts can be made online over the course of the weekend as well at www.uleth.ca/giving/make-gift.

“Our connection to southern Albertans and the communities we serve is both unique and enduring,” adds Horbachewski. “We’re extremely grateful for the support the U of L has received over the years – these contributions have made a tangible impact on the lives of our students and the now more than 41,000 alumni who represent the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ throughout the world.”
