UNews - Dr. Leroy Little Bear /unews/person/dr-leroy-little-bear en Painting pays tribute to Dr. Leroy Little Bear /unews/article/painting-pays-tribute-dr-leroy-little-bear <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>Dr. Maria Klawe, who received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge earlier this year, was inspired to put brush to paper after she met Dr. Leroy Little Bear (BASc (BA) &#39;72, DASc &#39;04) at this spring&rsquo;s convocation ceremonies.</p><p>&ldquo;I was deeply impressed by Leroy and I loved the integration of historic symbols and language from his tribe in the convocation ceremony,&rdquo; says Klawe. &ldquo;I wanted to do a painting as a way of expressing my appreciation.&rdquo;</p><p><div class="image-caption-container left" style="width:300px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/LeroyLBwatercolour.jpg" alt=""></div>The now-completed painting has been framed and will soon be installed in Iikaisskini (Low Horn) Gathering Place, which was named after Little Bear and opened in 2014. Little Bear, Distinguished Niitsitapi Scholar, special advisor to U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon on Aboriginal matters and professor emeritus, was delighted when he learned about the painting.</p><p>&ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t know how it was going to turn out but when I saw it, I thought it looks fantastic. She did a very good job,&rdquo; says Little Bear. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m very pleased with it and she kept my character.&rdquo;</p><p>Klawe, who is president of Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, has been painting watercolours since 1972 and her first two paintings were of Alberta wheat fields. An accomplished computer scientist, Klawe obtained a BSc in mathematics at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Alberta in 1973 and a PhD in mathematics in 1977. Monday&rsquo;s activities conclude with a showing of &lsquo;Elder in the Making,&rsquo; a film about how a Blackfoot man and a Chinese Canadian rediscover their shared connection to the land and future generations.</p><p>People are invited to feast on fry bread and berry soup and try their hand at making a medicine bag on Tuesday. Dr. Michelle Hogue will talk about FNMI and science education from noon to 1 p.m. in the library. The day wraps up with a showing of the film &lsquo;Relearning the Land,&rsquo; which presents a story about Red Crow College.</p><p>On Wednesday, the Faculty of Management will host a panel discussion titled &lsquo;Aboriginal Tourism: Commodity or Outreach?&rsquo; The speakers include Carly Bastien of the Buffalo Rock Tipi Camp, Lori Beaver, who has 30 years of experience in Aboriginal tourism, Stan Knowlton, head of cultural interpretive services at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, and Clayton Twigg, former interpretive guide at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park.&nbsp; Also on Wednesday, Jordan Bennett, a visual artist of Mi&rsquo;kmaq heritage, will speak at noon and Rod McLeod, a M茅tis elder, will talk about M茅tis culture and artifacts.</p><p>Thursday&rsquo;s events include a talk about teaching on reserve schools by the Faculty of Education&rsquo;s Dawn Burleigh. TRC Commissioner Wilton Little Child will speak from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Students&rsquo; Union Ballroom.
