U of L names new director for Iikaisskini FNMI Gathering Place

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is pleased to announce that Roy Pogorzelski has been appointed director for the Iikaisskini (Low Horn) FNMI Gathering Place, established in 2014 to be a welcoming place where appreciation and respect for First Nations, Métis and Inuit heritage is fostered.

“We are very excited to welcome Roy to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge,” says Dr. Mark Slomp, executive director of Student Services. “He is a dynamic, interesting and passionate individual who excels at building relationships and bringing people together to create positive change.”

Pogorzelski, a traditional Métis from Saskatchewan, has extensive experience in the areas of human rights, inclusion, racism and reconciliation. He worked with several municipalities to create a National Equity and Inclusion Guide, facilitated human rights training in Europe, instructed courses at the First Nations ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Canada and at the U of L and chaired the Reconciliation Committee for the City of Lethbridge. Melanie Joly, Canadian Heritage minister, recently appointed Pogorzelski to a four-year term as a director for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.

He is currently Inclusion Consultant with the City of Lethbridge and was recently invited to represent UNESCO Canada for the City of Lethbridge at International Coalition of Cities Against Racism (ICCAR) meetings in Kenya. In addition to being a U of L senator, Pogorzelski is a member of the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce where he serves as co-chair of the Aboriginal Opportunities Committee. He is also a member of the Alberta Provincial Hate Crimes Committee and a founding member of the Rotary Club of Lethbridge Mosaic.

Pogorzelski has received numerous awards for his work, including being named a Human Rights Champion by the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights. For his work in organizing an Oktoberfest YQL festival, he received the 2016 Festival of the Year award. He also received a Top 40 under 40 designation from the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce.

As Iikaisskini director, Pogorzelski will be responsible for managing and administering programs, services and staff of the Gathering Place. He’ll support collaboration between Indigenous peoples and administrators, faculty and staff across the U of L to foster initiatives and services that enhance the success of Indigenous students. Further, he will provide leadership in organizing and supporting cultural activities and interactions between Indigenous peoples, the U of L, the City of Lethbridge, partner institutions and the surrounding community. Pogorzelski will assume his new role on Aug. 15.

FNMI Centre’s first director links ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and traditional knowledge

Dr. Martha Many Grey Horses has come full circle with her appointment as director of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit Centre.

Originally from the Kainai First Nation, Many Grey Horses lived, studied and worked in the United States for many years before returning to Canada and more recently to southern Alberta.

“I feel very excited that the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has taken on this initiative. I feel it is a big step forward for the education of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people,” she says.

Many Grey Horses’ duties include managing Iikaisskini, the U of L’s FNMI Gathering Place, and co-ordinating initiatives across the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, with institutional partners and in the broader community.

Her own educational journey has given her experience, insight and wisdom that will benefit U of L Aboriginal students as they embark upon, continue and complete their post-secondary education.

A descendant of Chief Red Crow, she grew up with parents who demonstrated a traditional spiritual life. Her father, Alphonse, was the leader of societies and her mother, Ruth, supported the responsibilities that came with leadership. Her parents were keepers of the medicine pipe bundles and, as a child, she saw many ceremonies taking place in her home and spent time in the company of elders.

The residential school system, which she entered at age five, did not provide a positive association with education. She persisted nonetheless, completing her primary education at residential school and graduating from public high school in Cardston. While her parents encouraged their children to get an education, they also urged them to continue their spiritual development.

“We were living at a time when, as a teenager and even as a child, our personal cultural identity as nations was not nurtured by the government or by the society in general,” she says. “My parents understood that those traditional values were strongly connected to our personal cultural identity and that we must have a strong cultural foundation in order to survive or to function in this world out here.”

After high school, Many Grey Horses didn’t imagine she would go to college. She wanted to be at home where she could devote herself to her two passions — riding horses and sewing dresses. After staying at home for a while, her parents told her it was time to go to college. She began her studies at Mount Royal College and quit during the first semester.

“I went back home and informed my parents I had quit. I thought life would return to normal,” she says. “One day, my father was going to town and I hopped in without asking permission. Then he asked me ‘What are you doing?’ I said ‘I’m going to town with you.’ He said ‘No, you’re not coming to town with me. You decided to quit school. You find your way to town.’”

Her father’s words proved to be a turning point. She thought about them all day and by the time he arrived back home, she had made up her mind to return to school.

After completing two years at Mount Royal, she went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in social work at Montana State ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and a master’s degree in social work at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Denver. She also completed a fellowship in Washington, D.C., and another master’s degree in educational administration and human development at National ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in San Diego. Many Grey Horses went on to achieve a PhD in educational thought and social cultural studies from Arbor ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Arizona.

“My education was not handed to me on a silver platter. I didn’t have a lot of money as a student so earlier on in my life I knew that I had to rely on my academic abilities,” she says. “The sacrifices I made through all those years, the loving discipline of my parents as a child — being on task, being on time, listening and completing assignments— all those life-enhancing values kicked in for me.”

Her early negative experiences with education were transformed when she began attending universities in the United States. There, she was greeted by a welcoming atmosphere and, coupled with the pride of identity shown by her American Indian peers, her perception of her cultural identity began to shift.

“To me that was the turning point. I found I had a strong desire to strive for academic excellence,” she says.

Being able to nurture the same desires in today’s students by building a community that brings together academic studies and traditional indigenous teachings drew Many Grey Horses to apply for the position of director at the U of L FNMI Centre.

“The U of L’s emphasis on creating an environment that is conducive to the personal, social, academic and cultural aspirations of students, staff and faculty is broad and very inclusive and that’s what I like about it,” she says.

New SCALE-UP classroom may define future of active learning

A new learning experience has arrived at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge with the opening of the first SCALE-UP classroom, a student-centred and active learning environment space designed for student success.

The rooms feature d-shaped tables positioned around the perimeter of the classroom, each with access to a monitor that is mounted on the wall.

The acronym SCALE-UP refers to a Student Centred Active Learning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies. What it means is a flipping of the way in which content is delivered and utilized, with the goal of promoting a classroom environment focused on active learning.

“Rather than using classroom time to deliver material to students, the SCALE-UP philosophy calls for the majority of the background reading to be done prior to class,” says David Hinger, director of the Teaching Centre. “By doing this, class time can then focus on engaging students in more active approaches through problem-based learning or group-based activities.”

The SCALE-UP room is designed to support these activities. The rooms feature d-shaped tables positioned around the perimeter of the classroom, each with access to a monitor that is mounted on the wall. Students can project their tables’ content onto the wall for the entire group to see, while an instructor, who is positioned at a centre station in the room, also has the ability to display content and can override all monitors.

Students commonly work in teams of three, but also engage in a larger group of nine. Roles, regularly rotated, are assigned within each team, allowing each student to contribute to the group dynamic in a different way.

The initial SCALE-UP room is serving as a pilot project that could shape the way future classrooms are designed. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is currently in the planning phase of the Destination Project, a transformational endeavour that features the construction of a new Science and Academic Building. The lessons learned from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s first SCALE-UP room could create a blueprint for the design of classrooms in the new building.

“The objective of the pilot project is to research the effectiveness of this type of learning environment and to evaluate the learning experience for both students and faculty,” says Hinger. “This project will help to inform the type, size and number of classrooms that will need to be created and, as such, is an investment in the future of learning at the U of L.”

Committed to caring, Mirau supportive of SOS

Heather Mirau began her career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge as director of Housing, Food & Conference Services. It was a position that suited her ambitions well – not just professionally, but personally too. Mirau always felt a responsibility to help students succeed, and as the department’s director, she monitored the pulse of the campus population and addressed the needs of residents as they arose.

Heather Mirau may have changed roles at the U of L but her commitment to students remains.

While Mirau has many memories and stories over her years at the U of L, the plight of one particular student stands out in her mind above the rest. Mirau describes the student as a shy, but friendly young man with a bright mind and positive attitude. By all accounts he had a promising future, but there was one problem: the student was struggling financially – and rather desperately at that.

“Every once in a while I’d buy his lunch to keep him going,” Mirau recalls. “Unfortunately there were a lot of stories on campus like his, and there continues to be today. Financial struggle is a very real issue for a lot of students, and it has ripple effects across the entire university.”

Mirau’s career has advanced over the years and her commitment to student success has grown right along with it. Three years ago she became director of Integrated Planning, a position that gives Mirau the opportunity to serve the needs of students in a much broader way. While her professional contributions have undoubtedly made a difference in countless students’ lives – as she did with the financially struggling resident years ago – Mirau continues to contribute personally to students as well by making ongoing donations to the Supporting Our Students (SOS) fund.

“If you care about students and want to help them succeed, the SOS fund is a great way to do that,” says Mirau. “SOS alleviates some of the financial pressure that many students face, which allows them to focus on their studies and become more engaged in university life. When you contribute to SOS, you become part of a caring community. You help shift the social dynamic on campus and proactively create the kind of university the U of L aims to be.”

Mirau believes that the size of the U of L gives the institution a unique advantage in its ability to become the type of university that attracts students based not only on programming, but also on cultural climate.

“We are a closely knit community. There’s a connective thread that runs throughout the institution,” says Mirau. “We are Alberta’s Destination ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and that defines how we support our students.”

SOS offers financial assistance to students in all Faculties and programs at the U of L. Contributors can choose a fund designation for their gifts or leave the allocation to the discretion of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

“It brings us together as a caring community and that’s something I really want to be a part of,” says Mirau of SOS. “Everyone who contributes to SOS feels the energy that’s created through the fund, and it grows with every new donation. The positive effects absolutely snowball.”

Searing drama examines indifference to HIV crisis in early 1980s

How far does someone need to be pushed to make a change?

The Normal Heart by Larry Kramer takes on this challenging topic, and many others. A searing drama around the public and private indifference to the AIDS epidemic in New York City in the early 1980s and one man’s impassioned fight to inspire meaningful change, The Normal Heart plays on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre stage Oct. 15-19 at 8 p.m. nightly.

“Larry Kramer, an important gay activist who led the fight to bring attention to the AIDS epidemic in the gay community, wrote this play in 1985,” says Roger Schultz, director. “The work is largely an autobiographical, thinly-veiled account of that movement.”

Hailed by the Royal National Theatre as one of the 100 greatest plays of the 20th century, The Normal Heart tells the story of writer and gay activist, Ned Weeks, who forms an organization to raise awareness and take on an apathetic government and indifferent society as an unknown disease kills hundreds of gay men in New York City.

“The topics of the play are much bigger than just the HIV crisis,” adds Schultz. “It takes on the indifference and apathy in society in general. It asks, what does it take for someone on the street to be impassioned enough to stand up for a cause and make meaningful change?”

Challenging and relentless, the topics explored in The Normal Heart still resonate today.

“I’ve never worked on a piece of theatre so politically charged like this before. The Normal Heart is so full of heart and passion, and its impact is great because it is also true. Although it was a fascinating time in history, the fight still carries on today,” says Schultz.

New ULAA president looks to further engage alumni

The new ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association president understands the value of a community.

“I love growth, development and opportunity. Anything I can do to make things better for my community, for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ or my neighbourhood, I try to get involved in,” explains Grant Adamson (BSc ’03), who was elected as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association’s 26th president in July.

“Community involvement has been an unwritten part of my family philosophy forever; that goes back to growing up on a farm. Being on a farm is not a place where you can grow or develop on your own. You need community,” says Adamson. “About 10 years back we received a farm century award. It was pretty important to our family and community, but when I graduated from high school I wanted to see who I was away from the farm. Someone suggested I would be a good teacher, so I researched and found that the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge had an excellent program for teachers and chose to come to Lethbridge.”

Adamson, however, discovered he had no desire to teach, so in his second year he switched his studies to biology. That same year, he developed a severe case of mononucleosis and was subsequently unable to take a full course load for the next several years. It was then that he truly experienced the fellowship and support found within the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community.

“I was a very strong student academically going into university, but when I found myself suffering academically due to my health, I relied on services provided by the U of L. I sought out help when I needed it and I found it all over the place,” he says. “I became involved with the Organization of Residence Students, the Students’ Union and the curling club. My residence experience was particularly impactful because I got to be a part of governance and make a difference, which I loved. I also met my wife Rebecca (BA/BEd ’99, MEd ’09) and her friend Janet, who would later become my sister-in-law. Being involved in extra-curricular activities was very fulfilling and kept me going until I was well enough to take on full course loads.”

As he began to take more advanced theoretical courses, Adamson could not imagine himself being confined to working in labs for the rest of his life. He began to wonder if it was time to take a small turn in his academic direction once again.

“After exiting from the C-stairwell on 7th, I’d always turned left toward the bio-tech labs. One day, I felt drawn to the geography labs so I turned right instead! I sat there for about an hour reading the presentation boards about the projects and research going on in the department. I saw displays about things I cared about and it played to my roots. That fall, I switched my program to geography. Finally, I could look to the future and visualize what my life would look like.”

Adamson graduated in 2003 and began his career in the oil industry, working in environmental sciences. After the project he was working on shut down, he spent several years pursuing an interest in real estate investment, but his agricultural heritage always beckoned. In 2007, everything came together when Adamson began working with hybrid canola seed production at Monsanto Canada Inc. It was the perfect combination of biotechnology and agriculture all in one. Three years later, Adamson accepted a position at Dow AgroSciences where he continues to work as their lead agronomist for canola seed production in southern Alberta, the Pacific Northwest and Chile. One of his secondary duties is liaising with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, recruiting students to work with Dow AgroSciences as summer interns and potentially as long-term employees.

“The hybrid canola seed industry relies heavily on student interns in the summer, as it is extremely busy during this season,” says Adamson, who is happy to support students through his work and as a member of the ULAA. “The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is a great supplier of excellent students who have a background in, or knowledge of, agriculture, or who are willing to learn about it.”
Adamson became involved with the ULAA in 2005. He has served as a director, treasurer and vice-president and was elected as president in July.

“I got involved with the association because I missed the connection with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Participation with the ULAA is a great way for alumni to foster and maintain that link. As part of the executive, I have seen the association become increasingly involved in the community and take on a more formal role. My goal is to lead the maturation and formality process. With 36,480 alumni coming of age in the workforce, we are at a tipping point. I encourage alumni to reconnect and get involved. We want to hear about your stories, your successes and your adventures.”

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ reappoints Boudreau

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has reappointed Dr. Robert Boudreau to a second five-year term as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Vice-Provost & Associate Vice-President (Academic). The Board of Governors, as well as the review committee struck to make a recommendation to the Board, unanimously supported Boudreau's reappointment.

"Dr. Boudreau has been instrumental in ensuring the success of several initiatives over the past five years," says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Provost Dr. Andrew Hakin. "For example, Bob was instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition for our academic programmes as we relocated our Calgary Campus to the Bow Valley College site and our Edmonton Campus to Concordia ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ College of Alberta.

In addition to overseeing the transition of the northern campuses, Boudreau also plays a leadership role at the U of L by leading in key strategic areas including academic quality assurance and Campus Alberta partnerships. As well, he successfully advocated to the Alberta government the need to invest in mental health supports for students on campus.

Over the last 30 years, Boudreau has held a variety of academic positions including Professor, Assistant Dean, Director, Honorary Visiting Research Fellow, Acting Dean of Graduate Studies, Assistant Vice-President (Academic), and Vice Provost & Associate Vice-President (Academic).

Specializing his research in occupational burnout, his current resume lists 137 presentations, articles, books, book chapters and interviews that he has produced over the last three decades plus. He has personally collected burnout survey data from workers in Belarus, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

Summer Games work earns group Senate Volunteer Award

Thanks to the dedicated volunteer work of these four individuals, for four days in July 2012, more than 2,600 athletes came to Lethbridge to compete in the 2012 Alberta Summer Games.

The Senate of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is proud to recognize their service with the 2013 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Volunteer Award.

Nancy Walker, Deb Marek, Cheryl Meheden and Jochen Bocksnick sat on the Board of Directors for the games as well as managing their own specific portfolios. They began preparation for the games more than two years before the event, and each played an important role in organizing the games. The games were a success due to the contributions of these individuals, as well as hundreds of other volunteers, many of whom included ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ employees and students.

Nancy Walker was the director of administration for the games, responsible for managing the budget and brokering all contracts and legal agreements. Walker is currently the U of L's vice-president (finance and administration), and has extensive community volunteer experience.

As director of facilities, Deb Marek ensured that the sports and activities of the games had a venue. She also supervised all signage, portable facilities and warehousing. At the U of L, Marek is a manager in Sport and Recreation Services, and has been the assistant coach to the women's hockey team.

Cheryl Meheden's responsibilities as director of protocol included managing opening ceremonies, official receptions, hospitality, games attire, medals, participant entertainment and the torch relay. Meheden is currently an instructor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, in the Faculty of Management, and at Lethbridge College.

Guided by the Alberta Summer Games' mission to provide the best possible experience for all involved, director of sport Jochen Bocksnick ensured that the games offered the best venues and sport chairs. Bocksnick is an instructor in kinesiology and physical education at the U of L.

The 2012 Alberta Summer Games were a huge success, with over 2,600 athletes participating in 15 sports over the four days, watched by over 7,000 spectators. All four of these volunteers committed hundreds of hours to make this success happen, demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment.

CASA opens its doors

The City of Lethbridge, Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge are excited to announce the Grand Opening of CASA, a truly functional 42,000 square foot arts centre with a striking building design.

CASA is the realization of a 20-year dream, shared by many in the Lethbridge arts community, to expand or replace the Bowman Arts Centre and provide a home for the arts in one central location.

"I am very pleased to participate in today's celebration, which will usher in new opportunities for Lethbridge and southern Alberta's artistic community," says Jim Hillyer, Member of Parliament for Lethbridge, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

"Worthwhile projects such as this create jobs and encourage economic growth, while also providing Canadians with valuable cultural spaces."

Funding for the $20.69 million project includes $6 million from the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component (with $3 million provided by both the Federal Government and Alberta Transportation under BCF-CC), $14.4 million from the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative (administered by Alberta Municipal Affairs) and $200,000 from the City of Lethbridge.

"We're pleased to support local priorities and build communities through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative," says Greg Weadick, Associate Minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs and MLA for Lethbridge-West.

"Facilities like CASA bring together families and neighbours while they enrich lives, entertain and create more vibrant economies."

CASA will allow for students of all ages to learn and explore many different mediums of art, drama, music, dance, yoga and more. It will become home to many local groups and events.

After the 11 a.m. Grand Opening, and for the remainder of the week, special events will be taking place in the evenings, with a Party On the Plaza from noon until 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. This community festival is free and will include many local musicians and entertainers, from the Lethbridge Community Taiko Association to the U of L Conservatory of Music.

Other events during the week include dance, theatre, film, the inaugural CASA art exhibit opening and the music of Oscar Lopez.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Conservatory of Music has numerous events planned that showcase both the new facility and their diverse programs.

"Our local arts community has been waiting for this day for a long time. For decades to come, this new arts facility will be a significant cultural and economic asset for downtown Lethbridge and for the entire community," says Mayor Rajko Dodic.

Along with the Allied Arts Council, who will be overseeing the facility, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is also a major partner with its Music Conservatory moving to this facility.

"We are extremely proud of U of L Music Conservatory Director Peggy Mezei and her team, and their achievements as they move in to CASA's bright and beautiful space," says Dr. Mike Mahon, the U of L's President and Vice-Chancellor. "Our commitment to the community takes on many forms, and being such an integral part of the CASA group is something we are very pleased to be a part of. This new facility will be of great benefit to our present and future Conservatory students, and also to the many members of the arts and culture community who use the facility to express their own creativity."

The Rotary Clubs of Lethbridge have also provided support to the project which has led to the naming of the Rotary Plaza, the location of the festivities on Saturday, May 18.

CASA will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 pm. on Sundays. Classes and workshops, including the opportunity to try "sampler" classes for a nominal fee, will begin the week of May 20.

Kolb, McDaniel join list of Jubilee medalists

In late February, Dr. Bryan Kolb (Neuroscience, Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience) and Dr. Susan McDaniel (Sociology, Director, Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy) received Jubilee Medals awarded by the Royal Society of Canada. Both Kolb and McDaniel are Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC). This was the first visit to the U of L campus by Royal Society executive director Darren Gilmour and Royal Society President, Yolande Grisé.

In addition to Kolb and McDaniel, a number of U of L faculty members have also recently received Jubilee medals, among them Dr. Peter McCormick (Political Science), Dr. Reg Bibby (Sociology), Dr. Dayna Daniels (Women and Gender Studies), Dr. Rick Mrazek (Education), Tanya Harnett (Fine Arts/Native American Studies) and U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon.
