It gives the students invaluable experience they can build on as they finish their high school studies and take with them into a post-secondary setting.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>In just the last year, three local-area students who had the opportunity to train with ULethbridge researchers in the summer HYRS program </span><a href="https://stories.ulethbridge.ca/mentors-from-the-faculty-of-arts-science-inspire-next-generation-of-science-leaders/" rel="nofollow"><span>won medals</span></a><span> at the Canada Wide Science Fair. Fatema Riaz (Medicine Hat High School) earned a gold medal at the national science fair after being mentored by Dr. Dylan Girodat (chemistry &amp; biochemistry); Mehnaz Khan (G.S. Lakie Middle School) earned a bronze medal after working with Dr. Matthew Bogard (biological sciences); and Nycea Hazelwood (Lethbridge Collegiate Institute) received the award for the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association after studying with Dr. Kim Stanford (biological sciences).</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;One of the greatest strengths of the HYRS Program is the exceptional quality of researchers the high-school students are paired with from multiple departments,&rdquo; says Dr. Trushar Patel, Canada Research Chair in RNA and Protein Biophysics and associate dean in the ULethbridge Faculty of Arts &amp; Science. &ldquo;These dedicated scientists not only lead cutting-edge research, but they also take the time to mentor and inspire the next generation of leaders. Her post-secondary work has seen her work throughout Canada and overseas at New Zealand&rsquo;s Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Otago. Her most recent appointment was as a veterinary clinician with Health Canada in Ottawa.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m excited to explore a new part of the country. Lethbridge is a smaller city; it&rsquo;s really different geography and I&rsquo;m looking forward to that sort of feel for my family,&rdquo; says Calder about choosing to move to Alberta and take on the role at ULethbridge.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;When looking at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, it appealed to me for a number of reasons, one being a really strong neuroscience department. I&rsquo;ve been involved in a fair bit of neuroscience research at some other universities and it&rsquo;s something that really appeals to me. I also found the people I&rsquo;ve talked to so far have been really genuine and welcoming.&rdquo;</span></span></p><p><span><span>Calder earned a BSc in Zoology and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Guelph and is currently a member of the Canadian Association of Laboratory Animal Medicine and the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re really happy to add a veterinarian of Dr. Calder&rsquo;s calibre to our animal services team,&rdquo; says Dr. Dena McMartin, ULethbridge&rsquo;s vice-president research. &ldquo;Having worked in labs throughout the country and overseas, she brings a wealth of experience and perspective with her, and we&rsquo;re excited to welcome her to the ULethbridge community.&rdquo;</span></span></p><p><span><span>Calder always had a love for animals and eyed becoming a veterinarian when a high school guidance counsellor encouraged her to pursue something science-related because of her strong marks in the scientific disciplines. The mask policy will also apply to summer camps on campus.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The U of L is purchasing reusable masks for all faculty, staff and for students registered in face-to-face classes this fall. In addition, students living campus residences will be provided with masks that are to be worn when the student is not in their residence unit or outdoors when physical distancing cannot be maintained. With the number of orders being processed by our supplier, masks will likely not be available until the end of August. In the meantime, we ask that all faculty, staff, students and visitors coming to campus provide their own mask.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The rules regarding masks apply to the U of L&rsquo;s Lethbridge campus only. Igor (CEO of Pathway RX) and Olga Kovalchuk, both U of L biology professors.</span></span><div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:450px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/IgorMain.jpg" alt=""></div></p><p><span><span>The Kovalchuks and a team of researchers recently submitted a paper about their research study on the effects of medical cannabis on COVID-19 to a journal for publication and their manuscript has been uploaded to <a href="https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202004.0315/v1" rel="nofollow">Preprints</a>. This means the research has not yet been peer reviewed or been published in a journal.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The study focused on how certain cannabis extracts affected ACE2 and TMPRSS2 proteins. These proteins are imbedded into the cellular membrane and represent a key gateway for the COVID-19 virus to enter host cells. The researchers used C. sativa extracts to modulate the levels of these enzymes. Initial data suggest that 13 C. sativa extracts high in the anti-inflammatory CBD (cannabinoid cannabidiol) can modulate ACE2 expression in COVID-19 target tissues and down-regulate TMPRSS2. The results demonstrate that these high-CBD C. sativa lines have potential to become a useful and safe addition to COVID-19 treatment. They could be used to develop preventative treatments in the form of a mouthwash or throat gargle product for clinical and home use.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;Given the current dire and rapidly developing epidemiological situation, every possible therapeutic opportunity and avenue needs to be considered,&rdquo; says Kovalchuk. &ldquo;Our research team is actively pursuing partnerships to conduct clinical trials.&rdquo;</span></span></p><p><span><span>Through Pathway RX, Kovalchuk has generated more than 1,000 C. sativa hybrids and tested them on human tissues and cells to learn about their biological activity. If this program can do that, our communities will prosper as a result.&rdquo;</p><p>Blackfoot Nations and the U of L will work collaboratively to ensure the program is structured to meet the unique needs of Blackfoot youth and communities. Relationships will be at the heart of the project, and its activities will be focused on the Blackfoot values of kindness, respect, honesty and strength. Through their efforts, they have bettered the lives of individuals too numerous to count.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container left" style="width:250px;"><img alt="Dr. Robert and Mrs. Priscilla Janes" src="/unews/sites/default/files/Janes.jpg" title="Priscilla and Robert Janes"><div class="image-caption">Priscilla and Robert Janes</div></div>The U of L is proud to have nominated three of the award winners: Robert and Priscilla Janes, Indigenous Philanthropist award; Cox Financial Group, Small Business Philanthropist award and Dhillon School of Business Integrated Management Experience, Youth Philanthropist award.</p><p>Dr. Robert and Mrs. Priscilla Janes were central to the creation of a new series of student awards for Blackfoot students in 2017. The awards honour four Blackfoot elders that Dr. Janes worked with closely, including Narcisse Blood, Gerald Conaty, Allan Pard and Frank Weasel Head. Harry Cox was a community builder who played a key role in establishing the men&rsquo;s Pronghorns hockey program in the early 1980s. His wife, Mildred, and sons, Brad and Geoff, have continued that legacy, spending countless hours fundraising.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container left" style="width:250px;"><img alt="Integrated Management Experience" src="/unews/sites/default/files/IME.jpg" title="Dhillon School of Business Integrated Management Experience"><div class="image-caption">Dhillon School of Business Integrated Management Experience</div></div>The Integrated Management Experience (IME) program, which has been around for close to 20 years, gives students in the Dhillon School of Business the opportunity to work on a real problem faced by a community organization and create a sponsorship activity that raises funds for the organization.
