The Destination Project; Building careers from cooperative education placements

Building the cutting-edge home for future generations of scientists isn’t the only thing the Destination Project is helping to develop. Nicole Meurs (BMgt ’16) and student Nick Gabbin are two budding project managers who say their cooperative education placement with the Destination Project has helped build confidence and given them a glimpse into their future career paths with real-world experience.

“Getting to see how your skills from the classroom transition into the workplace is something I am so thankful I had the opportunity to experience. My placement allowed me to take on real responsibilities for the project, but I also felt supported by the entire project team because I was working and learning in a teaching environment too,” says Meurs.

When Meurs’ cooperative education placement came to an end in December, Destination Program Manager, Brian Sullivan hired her as a full-time project coordinator for the term of the build, something Sullivan says was a great thrill for him and the rest of the project team.

“When you see students grow and develop their skills throughout their placement, it brings a real sense of pride and joy because you’ve helped them along on their career path and it’s always nice when you can offer them their first job too,” smiles Sullivan.

For Gabbin, his placement will finish up in December and he is hopeful to also earn a spot on the Destination Project team. Gabbin says the experience he’s gained working in a cooperative education placement is invaluable and something he’d never expected to get as a 23-year-old student.

“Being able to experience responsibility on a job as big as this is just incredible and not just in terms of the work. Learning how to manage relationships and communicate with a team under the leadership of folks like Brian who have been at this for years is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” says Gabbin.

Sullivan believes the students he’s hired over his 30 years at the U of L have all showed a dedication to their placement positions and attributes their success to how their ability to think independently and have the responsibility to get the job done.

“A co-op placement teaches you how to be part of a team and how to transition from student to worker. It’s a unique opportunity that we’re able to offer and for those that get to work on this job in particular, it’s especially unique,” says Sullivan.

With construction ramping up as the Fall semester approaches, both Meurs and Gabbin are excited to see how their peers will engage with the rapidly changing landscape on campus and the possibilities it will allow for future co-op students.

“Markin Hall was my home while I was a management student and I can’t imagine what my education would have looked like without it so by working on this project, I am just giving back to future students who are going to make amazing discoveries in the building I helped to construct,” said Meurs.

President Mahon statement on 2016/17 provincial budget and approval of Destination Project funding

Earlier today, as part of the 2016/17 provincial budget, the Government of Alberta announced it has increased its funding commitment towards the construction of the Destination Project science building at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, and that $125 million in funding for this project has been moved up to this year. This will allow the U of L to begin construction on this project immediately.

The Government of Alberta has committed $248 million over the next four years to the Destination Project, complementing the $12 million in planning funds the U of L has already received for a total provincial contribution of $260 million.

The research, education, innovation and partnership initiatives this building will support promise to significantly enhance the further diversification of southern Alberta’s economy.

The Destination Project is a transformational project for our university and southern Alberta, and the research, education, innovation and partnership initiatives this building will support promise to significantly enhance the further diversification of southern Alberta’s economy.

The U of L has worked towards the realization of this moment for almost a decade. We are very grateful to Lethbridge-West MLA Shannon Phillips and Lethbridge-East MLA Maria Fitzpatrick for supporting us in demonstrating the need for this project. Further, on behalf of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, I would like to thank members of our campus community, as well as business, educational, industry and community leaders across southern Alberta who have promoted the merits of this project for years.

In the short term, the construction of the Destination Project will stimulate the local economy by creating hundreds of jobs. Once constructed, the building will serve as the bedrock of Lethbridge’s knowledge economy and will be a wealth creation tool for the province. New space for the sciences will enhance innovation and spur entrepreneurship through students who are trained in leading edge labs and through innovative new programs like AGILITY.

The U of L also applauds the Alberta government for its commitment to stable and predictable funding for the post-secondary sector by increasing the base operating grant by two per cent and maintaining the backfill funds for the tuition freeze. Universities and colleges will play a critical role in supporting the realization of a more diversified Alberta economy.

Finally, the U of L thanks the Government of Alberta for their investments in students including renewing expiring mental health grants for an additional year.

Wind testing plays role in design of Science and Academic Building

If you’ve spent any time in southern Alberta, it’s commonly understood that accounting for wind is a necessary part of any planning process. If you’re embarking on the construction of a Science and Academic Building (SAB) that will shape the future of scientific discovery and community engagement for the next 50 years, it becomes a key element in the building’s design.

In October 2015, Guelph, Ontario-based RWDI Consulting Engineers & Scientists was enlisted to perform a series of tests that would measure all aspects of how southern Alberta’s winds would interact with KPMB|Stantec Architects’ proposed SAB design. From exhaust dispersion to clean air intake to pedestrian wind patterns, snow drifting and everything in between, the comprehensive tests helped shape design alterations for KPMB|Stantec, as well as wind mitigation techniques for areas around the new building.

“This is the most significant project the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has undertaken since the construction of the original ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall, and it will radically alter the landscape of our campus,” says Brian Sullivan, program director for the Destination Project office. “It is a simple, flexible and adaptable layout but because of its sheer size and capacity, adding 36,000 sq. metres to the campus footprint, it is imperative we complete our due diligence on every aspect of its design, including how wind will affect its performance.”

The testing involved the creation of a 1/300 scale model of the U of L campus, including the new SAB. The model was then placed on an eight-foot diameter disc in RWDI’s wind tunnel and subjected to a multitude of wind speeds and directions.

“We got involved early on in the project, when things weren’t solidified from a mechanical design perspective, so we were able to work with the mechanical engineer and provide input as the building developed,” says Sonia Beaulieu, senior project manager with RWDI.

The testing then included measuring emissions from exhaust stacks by pumping carbon monoxide through small copper pipes that replicate the stacks in the building.

“We then measured the carbon monoxide concentrations at each of the fresh air intakes or sensitive pedestrian locations. We do that for a full array of approaching wind directions and varying wind speeds,” says Beaulieu. “Once we got our results, we then combined it with meteorological data and figured out how often a worst-case scenario could develop in each location. It all adds up to pieces of information that can be used by the design team to give them a better understanding of how they can optimize the building systems.”

In addition to air quality, the building was also tested to determine how it could affect the surrounding wind environment.

“We used different sensors for this, about one centimetre tall, that were placed on the model to represent pedestrian sensitive areas, like entrances, walkways and the viewing area on the roof.”

The wind was turned on again and measurements taken to determine if the wind environment was going to be suitable for the intended use of each area. When it’s not, mitigation techniques such as landscaping and windscreens are recommended.

The final round of testing conducted by RWDI involved immersing the entire campus model in a water flume.

Following testing in the water flume, fine sand accumulates in areas on and around the SAB, representing possible snow drifting.

“We released a very fine sand in the water, upstream of the model, and then as the water and sand flowed over the model, the sand accumulated around it in a similar way you’d see ground snow drift around a building or accumulate on a roof,” says Beaulieu. “What that allows us to understand is where snow is most likely to accumulate with the predominant wind conditions in the winter, and to then make decisions around whether our entrances are in the best or worst possible spot, are we facing a lot of snow removal costs and so on.”

From an overall perspective, the building’s design fared very well.

“We saw some favourable results, especially on the air quality side,” she says. “From a pedestrian wind standpoint, there are some areas that maybe are a little windier than we would like, but in working with KPMB|Stantec, we’re able to implement some mitigation measures that will ultimately improve those conditions, along with the snow accumulations.”

The focus of the design work now moves inside the SAB where RWDI is assisting with acoustics, noise and vibration.

“We are helping them to design partitions, walls and glazing, all different elements within the building to help with the acoustics of lecture theatres, classrooms and labs,” says Russ Lewis, a senior consultant in RWDI’s Calgary office.

The open concept of the SAB’s expansive atrium with adjoining laboratory and classroom space is intended to create an atmosphere of collaboration and allow for visitors to look in on research activities. At the same time, those working in labs need minimal outside distraction.

“It creates some interesting design challenges for us,” says Lewis. “We’ll look at opportunities to mitigate the effects of those open spaces and try to understand the implications of certain design decisions. We’re looking for a balance between visibility and privacy, all the while trying to make sure we stay within design limits that still allow the various activities to take place without too much intrusion.”

The work is one more piece in the grand puzzle that is designing a state-of-the-art building that will showcase academic and research activities at the U of L for years to come.

Design Development report approval moves Destination Project to shovel-ready status

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Destination Project took a critical step forward as the institution’s Board of Governors officially approved the final elements of a new science and academic building Thursday.

The Design Development Report for the Science and Academic Building contains a series of enhancements to the original concept, including minimization of the building’s overall footprint, increased sustainability elements, removal of a new energy centre, co-location of major scientific instruments and reconfiguring and maximization of various spaces.

Pending funding availability, the Destination Project will break ground in May 2016.

“This is the final planning stage needed to be completed before ground could be broken on this transformational project,” says Dr. Andrew Hakin, Provost and Vice-President (Academic). “The Destination Project is shovel-ready and we are eager to realize this critical piece of infrastructure, not only for the benefit of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, but for our city and province as well.”

Structural and building envelope design is nearly completed and interior design and fit out will continue as construction begins. Subject to funding availability, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ anticipates construction to begin in early May.

The new science facility will support the U of L in its teaching and research activities, and will also engage the community through high school experiences, science outreach for K-12 and the broader community, and build connections to industry, NGOs, government and community groups.

“The construction of the Destination Project will benefit our community greatly in terms of economic stimulus and employment, while the long-term impact of the building is even more significant,” says Hakin. “This new facility will ensure the U of L continues to attract top students and faculty to our city, will be a place where important questions are answered and will facilitate critical relationships between our university and external stakeholders for the economic and social benefit of our communities.”

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors recently approved the schematic design for the Destination Project, clearing the way for the transformational project to progress to its next stage – design development.

More than 60 stakeholders, involving more than 200 hours of input, have been involved in developing the building floor plate and integrating the research and teaching needs for all the major program areas.

In October 2014, the Board approved a design concept (The Hub), allowing for the Destination Project to advance to the schematic design phase. Since that time, more than 60 stakeholders, involving more than 200 hours of input, have been involved in developing the building floor plate and integrating the research and teaching needs for all the major program areas.

The Project Steering Committee was guided by a transdisciplinary research theme, and through the concept of developing large, shared research labs, the project continues to take shape.

“This is so much more than determining the layout of an office or what wall goes where, this is our opportunity to shape the way we teach and conduct research at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge for the next 50 years,” says Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dr. Andy Hakin. “That is why we have devoted so much time and effort in the consultation process, trying to get as much input as we can from our stakeholders as we contemplate how best to deliver post-secondary education in the future.”

An interactive, life-size mock-up of a teaching and lab area was constructed with the help of the Faculty of Fine Arts, transforming the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall Atrium into a space that is reflective of the vision of the project. For the past month, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community has been able to tour the mock-up and offer feedback.

“This was an outstanding exercise because the 21st century labs that we are developing are so radically different than what our faculty members are used to, it was important for them to see it in a full-scale form so that they could get a feel for what was being proposed,” says Brian Sullivan, director of the Destination Project Office. “It was also very valuable for us in terms of the feedback we received, giving us insight into the finer details that will help us to best meet the needs of our faculty.”

The next four months will see a room-by-room analysis of every individual space in the new building – the Design Development phase.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has chosen a design option for a new Science and Academic Building as part of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Destination Project.

The Hub, a concept that creates a vibrant core in the heart of the building where paths between laboratory blocks and the general campus intersect, was recently approved by the U of L’s Board of Governors from three proposed massing options shared with the community earlier this fall.

The new building aims to enhance and support entrepreneurship through the training of students in leading edge teaching and research laboratories.

“This is a significant milestone in our process and to see our planning efforts beginning to take form is extremely exciting,” says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mike Mahon. “This new building will move our institution forward in a transformational way and provide significant opportunities for students, faculty, staff and the southern Alberta community.”

KPMB/Stantec Architects and the Destination Project Steering Committee developed three massing options before presenting them to the community in early September.

Over the course of developing the three design options, five project charter goals for the Science and Academic Building were considered. They included: Connection to Campus & Community; Enable Transdisciplinary Learning and Research; Provide a Supportive Environment; Incorporate Sustainable Design; and Create Signature Architecture.

The new Academic and Science Building will serve as a catalyst in attracting leading faculty and high-achieving students to the U of L’s already outstanding academic and research programs.

“Selecting between the options that were presented to us by KPMB/Stantec Architects was difficult, but The Hub concept best incorporated goals of the project charter identified by the Destination Project Steering Committee,” says Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dr. Andrew Hakin. “The design encourages interaction and collaboration between faculty, students and the community, while the building respects the wonderful coulee landscape presented by the Oldman River valley and our campus.”

Community feedback forums were held over the past month before the Destination Project Steering Committee made a final recommendation to the Board of Governors.

“To reach this stage of the planning process is exciting and a little daunting,” adds Hakin. “It’s exciting because we have a broad concept in The Hub from which to work. The daunting part is now before us, where we will make the key decisions as to how the interior of the building will take shape. These decisions will define how we can achieve our primary objectives and create a world-class facility that will engage our faculty, students and the community for generations to come.”

The new Academic and Science Building will serve as a catalyst in attracting leading faculty and high-achieving students to the U of L’s already outstanding academic and research programs. It will also contain a state-of-the-art, highly sustainable energy centre that will serve the entire U of L campus.

Traffic pattern study underway as part of Destination Project planning

If you've noticed a fleet of vehicles stationed around the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus over the past few days, you are likely wondering about their purpose.

The U of L is currently in the planning stages for the Destination Project, a transformational construction project that will shape the future of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ campus for the next 50 years. The creation of a new Science and Academic Building, along with a new utility/energy centre is a massive undertaking and will require the elimination of parking Lot K.

Vehicles are currently stationed around campus conducting a study that will determine vehicle traffic patterns. The collected data will determine initial parking requirements during construction of the Destination Project. In addition, the study will provide alternatives to alleviate congestion and delays along Valley Road.

Three options unveiled for Destination Project Science and Academic Building

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Destination Project took a major step forward with the unveiling of three building massing options for the new Science and Academic Building.

Representatives of KPMB/Stantec Architects showcased the designs in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre as part of a one-hour presentation that elicited feedback from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community. Further comments on the options presented will continue to be collected at www.uleth.ca/featured-project/destination through Oct. 8, 2014.

“The planning conducted today, directed by the concerns raised by our community, will serve the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for the next 50 years,” says Dr. Andy Hakin, Provost & Vice-President (Academic). “The options presented this week are an important step on the path for our future, providing incredible opportunities for generations to come.”

After receiving a significant investment from the Government of Alberta earlier this year, KPMB/Stantec Architects was selected to lead the design process.

In developing the three options, an Integrated Design Planning Committee comprised of carefully selected faculty, staff, engineers, designers and architects met on a monthly basis to strategize, collaborate, tour and learn from each other. The group ultimately produced five primary objectives for the Science and Academic Building – Connection to Campus & Community, Enable Transdisciplinary Learning & Research, Provide a Supportive Environment, Incorporate Sustainable Design, Create Signature Architecture – and the three possible massing options.

They are as follows:

The Street

The Street: A curving street defined by two bar buildings follows the natural topography of the site, reaching toward the north campus on the west and opening up to a dramatic view of the coulee landscape to the east.

Flooded with natural light, the street connects people, offering impromptu meeting and learning space along its length and putting science on full display. On the south façade, a glazed winter garden rises the full height of the building, presenting a beacon of light to the campus.

The Court: A central courtyard frames a dramatic view of the coulee landscape and Oldman River. Filled with daylight, the courtyard creates a dynamic space for interaction and collaboration around which scientific activity occurs.

The Court

The openness and transparency of the court encourages a variety of views and connections between blocks of laboratory space. This interior landscape steps down through the topography of the site, creating a clear connection to ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall.

The Hub: A vibrant hub is formed at the centre of the building where paths between lab blocks and the general campus intersect, encouraging interaction and spontaneous collaboration between faculty, students and the community.

A curved atrium on the east extends the coulee landscape into the building and provides a spectacular outlook to the river. Framed views of the High Level Bridge, the grove of trees, and the Coulee Quad further connect the building to the landscape, community and campus.

The Hub

Further opportunities to view the massing options are available over the next week, with display boards set up at the following locations:

“The Destination Project is the means through which the collective aspirations of not only the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ but broader southern Alberta can be realized,” says Hakin. “This will be a hub of community engagement and outreach, and therefore it is very important for us to receive input from the broader community to help us define what is truly a transformational project.”

Following a thorough review of community feedback on the presented options, the planning committee will make a recommendation to the U of L’s Board of Governors later this fall, after which the Board will approve one of the three options in early December.

Planning for the Destination Project will continue for the next 15 months and will involve more public information sessions to keep the community informed of the progress to date. Construction is scheduled to start in spring of 2016.

The Destination Project is gaining momentum and this week marks the fifth superweek of design activities related to the planning phase of the new science and academic building and energy/utility centre that will comprise the two new buildings of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Destination Project.

Representatives from KPMB/Stantec Architects will be sharing three building massing options and gathering feedback from the campus community.

“Several superweeks of design activities have guided the planning process to date,” explains Destination Project Program Director Brian Sullivan. “The superweeks involve three solid days where the design team meets with members of the Integrated Design Planning Committee (IDPC), made up of more than 20 U of L faculty, senior administrators and facilities staff, to work through many of the building concepts and help advance the design of the project. These integrated design and visioning sessions began in May right after the design team was announced and the group provided significant input over the summer, resulting in the massing options that are being unveiled this week.”

The customized integrated design process will provide the framework that will guide the planning for the Destination Project. The ideas and planning concepts that flow from this process will help identify areas for academic collaboration and areas of required specialty for the buildings.

Several key themes have emerged from the discussions to date and have guided much of the decision making process. Creating a supportive environment, creating a transdisciplinary environment, sustainability, signature architecture, and campus and community connectivity remain at the forefront and will be reflected in the building massing options presented this week.

“With key members of the KPMB/Stantec Architects team on hand to answer questions, Wednesday’s presentation will give our community the first look at three massing options for the Destination Project, one of the largest construction undertakings in the history of southern Alberta,” says Hakin. “The options presented this week are an important step on the path for our future, providing incredible opportunities for generations to come.”

This week’s presentation follows closely on the recent announcement that PCL Construction Management Inc. of Calgary will lead the construction of the new science and academic building. The firm, which will also be responsible for building an energy and utility centre needed to support the growing campus, will provide important insight on constructability, logistics, and procurement and scheduling throughout the remainder of the design process and ultimately manage and oversee construction.

“The work undertaken by PCL will be vital to the successful construction of the first phase of the Destination Project,” says Hakin. “I look forward to working with them and would like to thank the Destination Project Steering Committee for their work in selecting both PCL and KPMB/Stantec Architects. This is a very important step for this project.”
