UNews - Canada West /unews/sports-game/canada-west en Horns men's soccer program adds strong recruits /unews/article/horns-mens-soccer-program-adds-strong-recruits <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>The 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Pronghorns men&rsquo;s soccer team is pleased to announce four new additions to the 2014 Canada West roster.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:210px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/Horns-logo_21.jpg" alt=""></div></p><p>After adding three local products earlier this offseason, the &lsquo;Horns are also excited to introduce midfielders Allan Siwella, Franco Crnkovic, Sean Gaiskey and defender Blake Pipke.</p><p>Siwella, who was with the program last year but missed the entire season due to injury, joins the &lsquo;Horns with a solid resume, being named a Canadian College All-Canadian while a member of the Medicine Hat Rattlers.</p><p>&ldquo;Allan will bring some tremendous attack skills and leadership to the program,&rdquo; says head coach Randy Bardock. &ldquo;He has been playing with the AMSL (Lethbridge FC) team throughout the summer and is really starting to regain his previous form.&rdquo;</p><p>Fellow midfielder, Crnkovic, comes to the &lsquo;Horns from Calgary and the Villains club program.</p><p>&ldquo;Franco brings an outstanding work ethic that stands out as soon as you watch him play,&rdquo; says Bardock. &ldquo;He brings a unique skill set that will be important for us as we needed to get better at the outside midfield position.&rdquo;</p><p>Another Calgary product, Pipke, joins the &lsquo;Horns via the Calgary Foothills program. The 6&rsquo;1&rdquo; defender will add versatility to the &lsquo;Horns backline next season.</p><p>&ldquo;Blake is a fantastic all-around defender and is a huge addition for us,&rdquo; says Bardock. &ldquo;His addition will give us a great deal of flexibility at the back next season.&rdquo;</p><p>Gaiskey, a central midfielder, is a product of the Whitecaps Academy, and comes to the &lsquo;Horns from Prince George, BC.</p><p>&ldquo;Sean was recognized by the coaches for his attitude and work ethic, which has allowed him to grow tremendously as a player,&rdquo; says Bardock. &ldquo;Each of these four players come from high quality programs where they have been leaders on and off the field. They then faced a familiar foe, the Victoria Vikes in the semifinals, winning a close-fought game, 7-5, on a Tiffany Wideen try and Sarah Gordon conversion.</p><p>Running out of steam in the finals, the Horns were defeated 24-7 by McMaster.</p><p>&ldquo;The girls are excited for fall after this success. We trained hard in the off season for this,&rdquo; says head coach JJ Ondrus. &ldquo;We&#39;re hoping to play more sevens in the future. After our first game (loss vs Guelph) we continued to build confidence, but ran out of steam in the final. As expected, the event was a two-horse race for gold with a battle between Gallagher and 免费福利资源在线看片 of Saskatchewan Huskie thrower Taryn Suttie. On her fourth of six throws, Gallagher set a new personal best for the second meet in a row and claimed the gold medal with a throw of 18.66 metres. Suttie was second with an 18.21 metre throw. No other competitors were within a metre of the top two throwers.<br />&nbsp;<br />&ldquo;Kayla rose to the occasion once again, kept her unbeaten streak alive, and continues to develop into one of the top young throwers in Canada,&rdquo; says Pronghorns head coach Larry Steinke. &ldquo;I&#39;m looking forward to the next few years in her development.&rdquo;<br />&nbsp;<br />Gallagher also competed in the shot put event and finished eighth with her furthest throw of 12.69 metres.<br />&nbsp;<br />Fresh off being named the CIS track rookie of the year, Hernandez earned the CIS gold medal in the triple jump and his first national title. Hernandez entered the event ranked second, but matched his personal best of 15.03 metres on his fifth of six jumps to claim the triple jump title.<br />&nbsp;<br />&ldquo;Aaron showed he was the class of the field despite fouling his first two jumps, adding more stress and grey hair to my life,&rdquo; says Steinke. &ldquo;He overcame that and just got better on each jump, and showed a lot of poise and maturity despite his nerves almost getting the better of him as well. &ldquo;<br />&nbsp;<br />Battling the flu and nerves made it a tough weekend for &lsquo;Horns throwers Peter Millman and Ryan Sommer. Millman finished sixth in both the weight throw and shot put events, as he was well under his personal best distances. Puck drops both Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena and both games will also be streamed live on <a href="http://canadawest.tv" rel="nofollow">http://canadawest.tv</a>.</p><p>After going 1-14-1 through the first semester, the Horns would like to forget the 2013 portion of the Canada West schedule, when everything that could go wrong seemingly did. The Horns are 10 points out of a playoff spot with just 12 games to play, but with eight of those 12 games at home, the schedule is finally working in their favour.</p><p>Though 16 games, the Horns have scored the fewest goals in the conference with 27 and allowed the most goals against with 87.</p><p>Freshman Ryon Moser leads the U of L with three goals and eight assists, while Cass Mappin and first-year centre Brock Hirshe are tied for the team lead in goals with five apiece.</p><p>For the Cougars, who are sitting at .500 (8-8-0), the second half will be a dogfight for home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Entering play, the Cougars are fourth with 16 points, one point behind the Saskatchewan Huskies for third and only one point ahead of the Manitoba Bisons.</p><p>Offensively, the Cougars are led by Cody Fowlie and Brody Luhning who have registered 15 and 12 points respectively, while Liam Brennan leads the team in goals with seven.</p><p>Between the pipes, the Cougars have platooned the tandem of Andrew Hayes and Lucas Gore with both making eight appearances this season.
