The Dinos won the first game between the two teams this season, 2-1, before the Horns returned the favor with a 5-2 win in Lethbridge.

The Horns women's hockey team opens the weekend Friday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena, while the men's team will entertain the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night.

The weekend series kicks off Friday in Lethbridge at Nicholas Sheran Arena (puck drops at 7 p.m.), with the series concluding in Calgary at Father David Bauer Saturday night at 6 p.m. Friday night’s game will also be streamed on Canada West TV.

The Horns opened the second half with a road split last weekend in Regina, while the Dinos dropped a pair of games to the conference leading UBC Thunderbirds.

Very little separates the two teams statistically; the Horns have scored 37 goals to the Dinos 30, while the Dinos are the better of the two defensively, allowing 44 goals compared to the Horns' 51.

Individually, the Horns are led by Kirsten Reeves and Sadia Lenstra, who are the only Pronghorns to crack the conference’s top 20 scoring list with 10 and nine points respectively. Janelle Parent is the lone Dino to make the list with eight goals and six assists for 14 points.

Between the pipes, Pronghorn Crystal Patterson and Dino Amanda Tapp have played the bulk of the games for their respective teams. In 13 games, Patterson sports a 2.26 goals against average, while in 12 appearances, Tapp has accumulated a 2.74 goals against average, but has accounted for three of the seven Dinos wins.

On the men's side, the Horns put an end to their 10-game losing streak last Saturday night, but face a daunting task this weekend in a home-and-home series with the country’s top ranked Calgary Dinos.

The weekend set kicks off Friday night in Calgary at Father David Bauer Arena with the back half going Saturday night in Lethbridge at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Puck drop for both games is set for 7 p.m. and Saturday night’s game will be steamed live on Canada West TV.

Coming off a month long break, the Pronghorns (2-15-1) earned a weekend split with the visiting Regina Cougars last weekend. In the Horns' win, newcomer Alex Sirard got his first start of the season in goal and was exceptional, turning aside 40 of the 41 shots he faced.

Despite not seeing conference action last weekend, the Dinos played a non-conference home-and-home series with their crosstown rival Mount Royal Cougars. After winning the opening game, the Dinos were beaten 6-3 by the Cougars on home ice.

Statistically this weekend’s matchup would be considered a mismatch. The Dinos are near the top of the conference in every category, while the Horns are at the opposite end of the spectrum. The Horns are the lowest scoring team in the conference with 31 goals and have allowed a conference high 91 goals against.

Without anyone in the top 20 in Canada West scoring, the Horns are led by freshman Ryon Moser with four goals and eight assists, while Cass Mappin and Brock Hirsche share the team lead in goals with five each.

The Dinos are the stingiest team in the conference, allowing only 25 goals against in 16 games, and have the top two ranked goaltenders in Jacob DeSerres and Kris Lazaruk. DeSerres sports a 1.50 goals-against-average to lead the league. Offensively, the Dinos are tied for the conference lead with the Alberta Golden Bears with 76 goals scored and freshman Chris Collins is second in the league in scoring with 13 goals and 11 assists.

Related Topics

Organization:

免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Pronghorns

Person:

Sadia Lenstra

David Bauer

Brock Hirsche

Janelle Parent

Kris Lazaruk

Kirsten Reeves

Dino Amanda Tapp

PCrystal Patterson

Ryon Moser

Cass Mappin

Alex Sirard

Chris Collins

SportsGame:

hockey

Fri, 10 Jan 2014 22:27:14 +0000 trevor.kenney 5928 at /unews Hockey programs take it on the road /unews/article/hockey-programs-take-it-road

For the first time this season, the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team heads out on the road for a two game set, traveling to Edmonton to face the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Alberta Pandas.

Through the first four weeks of the season, the ‘Horns have only played one road game, the front half of a home-and-home series with the Calgary Dinos.

If the early season results are any indication, every point is going to be valuable. So far, five points separate first to seventh in the Canada West standings, with the Horns sitting in sixth at 3-3-2. The Pandas (4-2-2) enter the weekend in fourth place, only two points ahead of the Horns.

After splitting their series last weekend with the Saskatchewan Huskies, the Horns need to string some wins together if they hope to move up the standings.

Head coach Chandy Kaip continues to platoon the goaltending duties between Shauntelle Williams and Crystal Patterson with both seeing action in four games. Williams has the better numbers with a 1.83 goals-against-average. After this weekend, the Horns will play five of their next eight games at home.

Offensively, the Horns have struggled, scoring just six goals in six games and if they are going to right the ship this season, they will need to increase their productivity. Specialty teams continue to be an area of concern as well, with the Horns ranking last in power play efficiency and second last in penalty killing.

Third-year forward Cass Mappin leads the team in scoring and has been involved in more than half of the Horns goals with four points.

For the Thunderbirds (1-5-0), the 2013-14 season has also gotten off to a rocky start and they enter the weekend having lost three games in a row, including being swept by the Alberta Golden Bears last weekend in Edmonton.

While not as drastic as the Horns' offensive woes, the Thunderbirds are the third lowest scoring team in the conference with 16 goals in six games. After sweeping the Regina Cougars in Regina two weeks ago, the Dinos beat the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend. Through four games, the Dinos have scored 21 goals while surrendering just nine.

Pronghorn Athletics is partnering with Kid’s Sport this men’s hockey season in a campaign to raise money to support sending kids to sport camps. Kid’s Sport is the official charity of Canada West and Pronghorn Athletics will be supporting the great work Kid’s Sport does in the community by supporting a “Score for Camps” campaign this year. Building on the idea of third-year forward Cass Mappin, a donation, valueing the average cost of sending a child to camp, will be made to Kid’s Sport for every home goal scored by the Pronghorns men’s hockey team during the 2013-2014 season.

Women's Hockey

Coming off a tough home weekend last time out, the Pronghorns women’s hockey team (1-1-2) looks to rebound in their home-and-home series with the Dinos (1-2-1).

The weekend set begins Friday night in Calgary at Father David Bauer Arena with the second game going in Lethbridge Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Puck drop for both nights is set for 7 p.m.

Last weekend, the Horns earned just a single point in their series with the CIS fifth ranked Regina Cougars, losing 5-1 and then 2-1 in a shootout. The Horns will need to shore up their defensive game if they are going to be successful this season. Through four games, the ‘Horns have allowed a league leading 14 goals against.

At the other end of the ice, the Horns have scored nine goals in four games and former Canada West rookie of the year Sadie Lensta looks to have returned to her freshman form, leading the club with two goals and an assist.

For the Dinos, they have a distinctly different look this season. Gone are head coach Danielle Goyette and Hailey Wickenheiser, both centralized with the Canadian National Team in preparation for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

In their last action, the Dinos earned a weekend split with the UBC Thunderbirds, losing 4-0 before rebounding for their first win of the season, 4-3 in a shootout.

Horns Soccer

The Pronghorns women’s soccer team (0-9-2) will conclude the 2013 season this weekend with one game on the road, traveling to Calgary to face the Dinos.

It has been a rough 2013 campaign for the Horns with only two points to show for their effort.
