experience.<br> <br> "We've operated a campus in Edmonton for almost 20 years, and our students have told us, loud and clear, that while they value our programming and flexibility, they were missing out on a campus environment," says Dr. Andy Hakin, the U of L's Vice-President (Academic) and Provost.<br> <br> "By listening to our students and closely following the direction provided by our strategic and academic plans, the move to Concordia's campus will greatly enhance the U of L student experience in Edmonton."<br> <br> The agreement with Concordia will see the U of L's Edmonton team move from a downtown office to its own leased administrative space on the Concordia campus, while providing classrooms and other services for U of L students.<br> <br> The arrangement is similar to that of the U of L Calgary campus, which has a lease partnership with Bow Valley College in downtown Calgary.<br> <br> Approximately 500 students attend U of L classes in Edmonton each year, primarily in evenings and on weekends. The U of L's presence will subsequently not conflict with regular Concordia classes.<br> <br> The U of L will have the use of several classrooms, videoconference facilities and student computer labs. As well, U of L students will have access to the Concordia library, recreation and fitness facilities, bookstore and cafeteria. The campus location also offers convenient parking and transit access, something that was lacking at the previous location.<br> <br> "This move presents a great opportunity for both our institutions He travelled to Canada, where he met a beautiful young girl, who had also emigrated from the Philippines. Eventually, the young man and young woman fell in love, married and lived happily ever after.</p> <p>But, don't you wonder what happens after "happily ever after"? In this case, a new story emerges; a story filled with hard work, success and continued happiness. A story of their daughter, Jeanette Dotimas (BMgt '01), president of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/alumni" rel="nofollow">Alumni Association</a>'s Edmonton chapter (ULAA), and communications advisor for <a href="http://www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca/text/index-e.html" rel="nofollow">Public Works and Government Services Canada</a>.</p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/alumni-dotimas.jpg" alt="Jeanette Dotimas" title="Alumna Jeanette Dotimas, the new president of the Edmonton chapter of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Alumni Association."><div class="image-caption">Alumna Jeanette Dotimas, the new president of the Edmonton chapter of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Alumni Association.</div></div>"As the oldest in my family, I was always taught to strive to be the best and to be a good role model for my sister and brother," explains Dotimas. "I am a first generation Canadian. My parents did what they could, they worked very hard, but they did not have a lot to give me and my siblings; motivating me to do well in school and supporting me in obtaining my degree was their gift."<p>Dotimas earned a business administration diploma, specializing in marketing, from <a href="http://www.nait.ca/" rel="nofollow">Northern Alberta Institute of Technology</a> (NAIT), before enrolling in the post-diploma bachelor of <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/management" rel="nofollow">management</a> program offered at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's Edmonton campus. For the next two years, she worked full days at <a href="http://www.ge.com/ca/" rel="nofollow">General Electric</a> and attended full-time classes in the evenings and on weekends to complete her degree.</p> <p>"It was such an intense, focused program," says Dotimas. "For the most part, we were all in the same boat, working during the day then coming to school at night and on the weekends. It was like an 80-hour work week, but it was great preparation for the professional world."</p> <p>The personal nature of her educational experience helped establish long-lasting bonds with the U of L.</p> <p>"The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ felt like a family. I met some of my best friends there; our experiences studying and graduating together were life changing," she says. "Now that I am serving the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in an alumni capacity, I hope that the U of L remains a big part of my life."</p> <p>Since her graduation, Dotimas has been an active alumna and was thrilled to participate in the organization of a brand new ULAA Edmonton chapter. She served for one year on the board, becoming president of the chapter this fall.</p> <p>"I had such a positive experience with the <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/edmonton/" rel="nofollow">Edmonton campus</a>, and I went to alumni events because I wanted to somehow stay connected," she says. "I strongly believe that being a part of the ULAA is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, to expand your horizons and your networks and to give back."</p> <p>With close to 2000 alumni residing in the Edmonton area, the chapter looks to offer support, whether it's in the form of providing work opportunities through networking or connecting alumni with other professional organizations.</p> <p>"Personally, I am a huge advocate for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬," says Dotimas. "Whenever I have the chance, I promote the U of L to whoever will listen. Through word-of-mouth advertising from former students, my hope is that the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ gets the recognition it deserves both in the community and in industry. The U of L is such a unique and wonderful institution and we want to ensure that we are on people's minds."</p> <p>Dotimas brings a host of professional expertise to the ULAA. As a communications advisor for the federal government, she has experience in everything from event planning to product development and media relations. In addition, she organizes workplace diversity events and facilitates workshops on anti-discrimination.</p> <p>"When we come to work, we each bring our personal experiences and our beliefs through the door. When I facilitate a session on anti-discrimination, the focus is on understanding one another and learning about what makes us unique – respecting the differences between us," Dotimas explains. "There is a great commonality between the federal public service and the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ prides itself on reaching out to different cultures (e.g. through its international studies programs) and providing a positive and inclusive environment for students, staff and their families. I see my employer in a similar vein; both institutions strive to provide a challenging workplace that is diverse, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary."</p> <p><strong>GET THE FACTS</strong></p> <p>&middot; Married and a mother of two, Dotimas strives to be a positive role model for her children. "When they see me volunteering my time and being involved with things like the ULAA, what I really hope to teach them is the importance of giving back to the community and how to be good global citizens."</p> <p>&middot; Among the boards and committees she is a part of are: <a href="http://www.cfrac.com/" rel="nofollow">Edmonton Centre for Race and Culture</a>; Alberta Federal Council business ethics and moral reasoning &ndash; that is, until one talks to <a href="http://zapp.uleth.ca/Applications/CampusDirec/users/robbin.derry" rel="nofollow">Dr. Robbin Derry</a>.</p> <p>After completing an undergraduate degree in French at <a href="http://www.dartmouth.edu" rel="nofollow">Dartmouth College</a> in New Hampshire, Derry's interest in cooking led her to France to apprentice for a school backed by Julia Childs. She worked in a variety of restaurants upon her return to the United States.</p> <p>"I learned a lot about labour and management &ndash; as well as some things about cooking frozen vegetables and frozen desserts," says Derry, with chagrin. "I eventually ended up back in New York City and what I saw there got me thinking about ethical conflicts in business."<div class="image-caption-container" style="width:400px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/derry.jpg" title="Dr. Robbin Derry teaches management strategy and environmental management." alt=""><div class="image-caption">Dr. Robbin Derry teaches management strategy and environmental management.</div></div></p> <p>Derry searched for answers in an MBA, but it wasn't until she began to pursue her PhD in business ethics and gain some teaching experience that she discovered the same satisfaction in teaching that she had felt in cooking and feeding people. An informal meeting at a conference with John Usher, policy/strategy chair in the <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/management" rel="nofollow">Faculty of Management</a>, opened up the possibility of teaching at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.</p> <p>"I was intrigued by the U of L because there seemed to be a real faculty-wide interest and commitment to social responsibility. The idea of being at an institution where there were many other people interested in ethics and CSR (corporate social responsibility) helped me see the U of L as a place where I might really fit in and not be swimming upstream."</p> <p>She has taken her life experiences to the classroom at the Edmonton campus and enjoys watching students come to their own realizations.</p> <p>"In my environmental management class, the students' first assignment was to do a self-audit on sustainability; to analyze their own patterns of consumption and waste in their households. They found the process surprisingly informative.</p> <p>They just hadn't thought much about their own consumption patterns and how their own habits had impacts on the environment as well as the practices of large companies. It is this kind of nurturing education that I find satisfying: helping students to recognize the consequences of their choices."</p> <p>Derry joined the Faculty of Management in 2007 and currently teaches management strategy and environmental management.</p> <p>Her latest research bridges industries. She is comparing the strategies developed and practiced by the tobacco industry to gain acceptance and legitimacy in society with the strategies used by other industries facing strong public and activist pressure for social accountability.</p> <p>"Greenwash or CSR window dressing is a lot like fast food. It is only briefly satisfying and fundamentally not a good solution to the real need or hunger. We need a slow food kind of commitment to provide thoughtful solutions to our economic and environmental challenges."</p> <p>But she says she's always ready to cook for 20-30 people at a moment's notice. Just don't expect fast food.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/new-york-city" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">New York City</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/dartmouth-college" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Dartmouth College</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/edmonton-campus" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Edmonton campus</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/thoughtful-solutions" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">thoughtful solutions</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/industry-term/slow-food-kind" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">slow food kind</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/food" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">food</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/faculty-management" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Faculty of Management</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/dartmouth-college-new-hampshire" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Dartmouth College in New Hampshire</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/robbin-derry" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Robbin Derry</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/john-usher" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">John Usher</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/julia-childs" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Julia Childs</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/usher-policystrategy-chair" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Usher , policy/strategy chair</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/policystrategy-chair" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">policy/strategy chair</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/new-hampshire" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">New Hampshire</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Derry offers food for thought" class="rdf-meta"></span> Tue, 20 Jul 2010 17:09:42 +0000 trevor.kenney 4363 at /unews
