Horns land husband/wife team

Should Dave Adams and Donna Branch need to document the recruiting costs for their latest point guard acquisitions, the ledger could read, "Two for the Price of one".

Pronghorns basketball, both men's and women's, got a big boost this week when the husband/wife duo of Jeff Price and Stephanie Price (Elford) decided to suit up in blue and gold this fall. For Stephanie, it's a return to the U of L, where she played point guard for two seasons before taking a year off of school last season. For Jeff, it's back to the hardwood but in a new locale after he too took a year off following seasons with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal College Cougars.

Stephanie, a five-foot, six-inch, Calgary native led the Horns in scoring during the 2007-08 season averaging 13.4 points per game, while also contributing 3.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. In 44 career games, 32 times as a starter, Stephanie compiled 429 points.

Jeff enters his fourth year of eligibility after playing with the Dinos and in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference with the Mount Royal Cougars.

During his only season with the Dinos, Price averaged 12.3 points and 5.2 assists in over 33 minutes per game and was a member of a Dino team that finished with the best record in the Central Division and hosted the Canada West Final Four in 2007-08.

As a Cougar, Price was named a CCAA All-Canadian and the Mount Royal Male Athlete of the Year for 2006-07.

"We are delighted to announce that Jeff Price will be joining the team next season. Jeff is a proven winner at every level he has played," said Horns Head Coach Dave Adams. "Jeff is an invaluable addition to the team as he allows people to play at their natural positions, and will empower the Horns to play at the pace we need to succeed."

Both programs will add to their respective recruiting classes in the coming weeks, leading up to the start of the Canada West schedule Oct. 30, on the road in Edmonton. The Horns' home opener is Nov. 7 versus the Regina Cougars.

Men's hockey team needs a win

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey team needs to get back in the win column but it will not be an easy task this weekend when they head to Edmonton to face the Alberta Golden Bears.

The Pronghorns (12-10-0) have followed an eight-game winning streak with a four-game losing skid and while they still have a hold on fourth place in the Canada West standings, the race is tightening. The Bears (18-2-2) are defending Canada West and CIS champions and swept the Horns in their first meeting of the season.

Basketball

The Pronghorn basketball teams will conclude their home schedules this weekend at the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym when they play host to ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan Huskies.

Having both been eliminated from post-season contention, the Pronghorns are both looking to build for next season.

The women's team (4-16) looks to finish on a positive note but will face a tough challenge in the Central Division leading and CIS third-ranked Huskies (17-3).

The Horns have had a solid second half, upsetting three quality Canada West opponents, including two nationally-ranked teams. The Huskies have clinched top spot in the division and will have a bye in the opening round of the playoffs.

The men's team (4-16) has won only one of its last 14 games after a 3-3 start to the year and is currently on a 10-game losing skid. They'll meet a Huskies team that is 9-11 on the year, having gone 8-8 since winning just one of their first four starts.

Game times both nights see the women hit the floor at 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8:15 p.m.

Women's Hockey

The Pronghorns women's hockey team (3-18-1) has a bye this weekend and will conclude its regular season next weekend, hosting the UBC Thunderbirds.

Horns host swimming, track meets

Pronghorn Athletics hosts a rare weekend of Canada West action when both the track and swimming programs have home dates.

Pronghorn Track

The U of L track team hosts a throws and jumping meet Saturday in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym. Highlighting the meet is Pronghorn thrower and Canadian Olympian Jim Steacy, who will compete in the men's weight throw event at 12 p.m. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. with the long jump, followed by the men's weight throw. The women's weight throw, with Pronghorn thrower and defending CIS champion Heather Steacy in the field, then takes over at 1:30 p.m. The men's and women's shot put events round out the meet at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively.

Pronghorn Swimming

The Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre will serve as the host site for the Pronghorn Classic swim meet. The Horns enter the competition having posted some positive results at the recent Canada West championship meet. The club is building towards the Feb. 19-21 CIS Championships that will be hosted by ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of British Columbia.

The Horns have already qualified four swimmers for the national meet, but this weekend is the first of two remaining opportunities for other members of the Horns' team to reach their qualifying mark.

The meet kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. and runs through Sunday morning. There are two sessions on Saturday, at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and a final Sunday morning session at 10 a.m.

Men's Hockey

The men's hockey team (12-8-0) returns to action after having a bye last weekend, traveling to Vancouver to face the UBC Thunderbirds (6-12-2).

The Horns have fallen to fourth in the conference, trailing the Manitoba Bisons by three points but hold four games in hand on the Bisons.

After setting a new team mark for consecutive conference wins at eight games, the Horns were swept by the CIS #4 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon two weeks ago and dropped out of the CIS Top 10 rankings.

In their only weekend set with the Thunderbirds earlier this season, the Horns split two games in Lethbridge, winning the first game, 7-2, before losing the next night, 4-3.

Women's Hockey

The women's hockey team (2-17-1) hits the road for their second-to-last weekend of the season, traveling to Saskatoon to face the Saskatchewan Huskies (8-9-1).

Men's Basketball

The Horns men's basketball team (4-14) is still mathematically alive for a post-season berth in the Central Division, but will need some help to qualify. The Horns trail the Saskatchewan Huskies by three games for the final position and face a tough weekend on the road.

The Horns travel to the West Coast to face the CIS third-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (17-2) and the sixth-ranked Victoria Vikes (14-5). Tip-off for Friday night's matchup with UBC is set for 9 p.m. MST and you can click on this UBC live radio link to listen to the game.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team (3-15) was officially eliminated from post-season contention last weekend and travels to the West Coast to face the same two schools as the men's team.

Friday night the Horns face the Thunderbirds (10-9), who have clinched a playoff spot in the Pacific Division, while Saturday the Horns conclude the road portion of their conference schedule versus the CIS sixth-ranked Victoria Vikes (13-6). Swim team off to Victoria

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns swim team is off to Victoria this weekend for the Canada West Championship meet, highlighting activities for Pronghorn Athletics.

The Horns are still a small squad comparatively, but they have qualified 23 swimmers for the conference meet, up six from last season. Unfortunately, only 18 will be on hand in Victoria due to a variety of ailments that will keep five swimmers unavailable for action.

Last year, the women's swim team finished fifth overall, one place up from the previous season, while the men placed sixth at the Canada West Championships. With such a small squad heading to the meet, a Canada West title is not expected, but the team is poised to improve on last year's team standing.

Horns Basketball

A pair of west coast schools comes to town to face the Pronghorns men's and women's basketball teams.

Trinity Western Spartans and Simon Fraser Clan will provide the opposition Friday and Saturday night respectively at the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym.

The Pronghorn women (3-13) have split each of their past two weekend series, beating nationally-ranked opponents on each occasion. This weekend they'll meet the top-rated program in the country in the form of the Clan (16-1) on Saturday night.

The Pronghorn men (4-12) are in the midst of a six-game losing skid and are three games out of the final playoff berth in the Central Division. They face two tough tests this weekend with the Spartans (12-5) on a nine-game conference win streak and the Clan (10-7) having won six of their last eight.

Game times both nights see the women take the court at 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8:15 p.m.

Horns Hockey

While the Pronghorns men's team has a bye in Canada West play, the Pronghorn women host the defending Canada West champion ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta Pandas.

The Horns (2-15-1) are coming off a weekend split with ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Regina. The Pandas (16-2-0) are ranked fourth in the country, with their only two losses coming at the hands of the top-rated ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Manitoba Bisons.

Game times both nights are 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Key weekend for Pronghorn Athletics

The men's hockey team will test a program-best win streak on the road while the men's basketball team begins a series of must-win games as Pronghorn Athletics gears up for the stretch run in its spring sporting schedule.

The Pronghorns men's hockey team is riding an eight-game win streak, the longest stretch in the program's history, as it heads to Saskatoon to face the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan Huskies in a two-game set. The Horns, 12-6-0 on the year, are now ranked eighth in the country and after not being in the national rankings for six seasons, have spent three successive weeks in the CIS top-10.

Against Saskatchewan, 12-5-1, the Horns face the country's fourth-rated club. The Huskies split their latest weekend series with Manitoba and lead the Horns by just one point in the Canada West standings. The two teams, who play Friday and Saturday night, split their first series of the season, Oct. 17-18, here in Lethbridge. Saskatchewan won the opener 4-3 before the Horns stormed back for a 7-2 win the next night.

The situation isn't as rosy for the men's basketball team, losers of four straight games to fall back to 4-10 on the regular season and four points back of Saskatchewan for the final Central Division playoff spot. They'll host ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary Dinos this weekend in a two-game set that kicks off a stretch of must-win games with just eight games remaining in the regular season.

The task won't be easy for the U of L as the Dinos (12-2) come in as the fourth-rated team in the country. Tip-off for the Friday and Saturday contests is 8:15 p.m. each night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym.

The women's basketball team, 2-12, is coming off its biggest win of the season, a 65-60 overtime victory over ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta Pandas, as it prepares to host the Dinos, 6-8. Calgary, still rated eighth in the country, is on a six-game losing skid entering the weekend. The women tip at 6 p.m. each night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym.

Rounding out weekend action, the Horns women's hockey team will look to improve upon its 1-14-1 mark when they host ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Regina Cougars (3-13-0). The teams split a series earlier in the season. Games go Friday and Saturday nights, 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
