Community organizations collaborate to assist local employers in accessing federal funds, hiring

Southern Alberta employers are invited to join ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Co-operative Education (Co-op) programs, the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Lethbridge, for a brief presentation on how U of L co-op students can meet their hiring needs, all with the assistance of federal wage subsidies.

Find & Fund Your Workforce is a brief workshop for local employers that will outline how U of L co-op students can satisfy hiring and/or project needs. It will take place on Friday, January 24 at 8 a.m. at Tecconnect. Individuals can register to attend in person or via webinar at findandfundlethbridge.eventbrite.com.

“We will share valuable information on how employers can access up to $7,000 per student in co-op wage subsidies through the Student Work Placement Program (SWPP),” says Jasminn Berteotti, the U of L’s director, Co-operative Education. “SWPP is a federally-funded program that represents all industry types to create new co-op opportunities for post-secondary students.”

In the federal government’s Budget 2019, $631.2 million was allocated over a five-year span to provide wage subsidies for Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities with a goal of creating 84,000 new opportunities per year.

U of L Calgary campus student earns Retail Council of Canada Scholarship

Dhillon School of Business student Lisa Nguyen received the good news in early May that she was awarded the 2018 Retail as a Career Scholarship from the Retail Council of Canada. This scholarship features financial assistance for university education, along with hotel and travel expenses to attend STORE 2018 in Toronto – Canada’s biggest retail conference, held in late May. The scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled in a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ program, who work in the retail industry, and who demonstrate commitment to the retail industry while distinguishing themselves as being innovative and knowledgeable about the future of shopping.

A marketing major, Lisa Nguyen got into the marketing industry thanks to her experience in the co-op program.

“Being chosen out of hundreds of applicants was unbelievable,” says Nguyen. “Being praised by a recognized organization and peers within my industry meant a lot to me. It also helped me validate some ideas I have had for retail and the field of marketing.”

“Joining the co-op program in the Fall of 2016, I wanted to gain some experience within my major. I decided that it was important to assess my interests and competence within the field.”

Just one month after joining co-op, Lisa earned a 12-month co-op position as an Advertising Purchasing Specialist with Canadian Tire, which ultimately led to her current position as an eMerchandising specialist within the digital/eCommerce team.

“Calgary Co-op Advisor, Doreen Kooy did everything that was possible to help me. I have never received so much career support in my life. Doreen was accessible, supportive and always there to help me when I was in need. Her experience within human resources and overall support will not be forgotten,” says Nguyen.

As she enters her final year of schooling at the uLethbridge Calgary campus, Nguyen plans to continue her journey in the digital marketing field and offers her advice to any Calgary campus student who might be on the fence about joining co-op.

“Don’t consider it an option, consider it an essential part of your education. I’ve convinced many people to pursue a work term. The work will not be writing emails and copying reports. I was immediately challenged and given the responsibilities and the autonomy to make things happen,” she says.

“It’s silly to not to do at least one work term. It is a time to openly explore different industries within your field while being able to learn new skills. Employers are open to supporting you with your career growth. I defined what I wanted from the employer and they were completely supportive of my growth and experiences. You will definitely become more marketable when you graduate! At the very least you will get to learn more about yourself and what you want from an employer.”

Many students in the sciences read about DNA in the classroom, but what kind of students get to actually work with DNA in a lab - ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Co-op students.

Joel Stimson, a Bioscience major, completed his first Co-op work term in summer 2008.

"My friends said they enjoyed the Co-op program so that's why I decided to do it," says Stimson. "I got a job as soon as I got into the program."

specializing in plant biotechnology.

"We studied the effects of different chemical concentrations and components on canola," he explains, "such as phosphates, cerium, and lanthanum."

Stimson worked with a specific gene called RAD52 and learned various laboratory techniques of extracting this gene from canola. He was responsible for cutting and inserting DNA, planting seeds, looking at shoot formation, reducing genetic mutations and determining optimal growing conditions of canola. His research has many implications in the field of gene research, but more important are the agricultural benefits that these chemical and gene insertions may have for the optimization of canola growth.

The Arts and Science Co-operative Education Program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge works to create a partnership between students, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the employer, and allows for an extended learning environment as well as the ability to network with employers. Students can integrate academic semesters with work terms, and can apply skills learned in the classroom directly to the workplace and vice versa.

Throughout his work term Stimson learned valuable laboratory techniques and procedures that will help him immensely in his further studies and research.

"My Co-op experience will help increase my chances of getting into medical school," he says. "I would recommend the program to anyone who wants to weigh their career options and see what kind of potential they have."
