By providing outstanding recreational opportunities for people from throughout the area, this building demonstrates the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬&#39;s commitment to improving the quality of life in Lethbridge and the surrounding area. The addition of the sports medicine clinic furthers this commitment.&quot;<br /><br /> The clinic, located in PE100 below the south end of the running track, houses the orthopaedic offices of Drs. Facilities and its Project Management Office have been working diligently to create and renovate a variety of new and improved spaces.</p><p>This past summer was one of the largest building seasons the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ has ever seen – about $30 million worth – making our campus the busiest building site south of Calgary. While construction crews have been working around the clock and most projects are near completion, not all are finished.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/construction_2.jpg" alt="Quad construction" title="The new quad area north of Markin Hall promises to give the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ another parkland setting, complete with rolling hills and well-lit walking paths."><div class="image-caption">The new quad area north of Markin Hall promises to give the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ another parkland setting, complete with rolling hills and well-lit walking paths.</div></div></p><p>The Facilities department appreciates everyone's patience as crews wrap up the remaining construction, and ask that all posted signs be obeyed to ensure everyone's safety.</p><p>The second and final phase of the mechanical upgrades to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Centre for the Arts should be done by early September. A typical break-in period of new equipment is expected to follow. The project will not only improve air quality but also create a more energy efficient building operation.</p><p>Several areas of the PE Building are also wrapping up construction, including the finishing touches on the south plaza entrance as well as the indoor PE staircase, both of which should be open by October.</p><p>The newly renovated day-use change rooms in the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre should also be operational by early October. The nearby underground Physical Education Tunnel re-opened just prior to the first day of classes.</p><p>The new sports medicine clinic in PE100, the area below the south end of the running track, is on schedule to open by the end of September. Once complete, the clinic will feature physiotherapy and exam rooms, treatment areas and doctor's offices.</p><p>The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Quad north of Markin Hall, featuring a core open space surrounded by small rolling hills, well-lit sidewalks and landscaping should be ready for use by October.</p><p>The final details of the parking lot redevelopment will also conclude later this month. The lots have been redesigned to offer more practical parking and improve pedestrian safety. Phase 2 of the parking lot project will get underway in spring 2013.</p><p>Perhaps the biggest project on campus, the ongoing construction of the 259-bed Aperture Park residence is on schedule and set to open July 2013.</p><p>Off campus, the downtown Penny Building will undergo renovations starting mid-September.</p><p>Details on these projects can be found at <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/facilities/" rel="nofollow">www.uleth.ca/facilities</a>.</p><p>For more information on any of these projects, contact Brian Sullivan at 403-329-2592.</p><p><em>This story first appeared in the September 2012 issue of the Legend. And rather than this occurrence being a blip on the radar, Horns Athletics track coach Larry Steinke (BA '94) says it is an emerging trend.</p> <p>"We're a small community and I think in some ways that gives us a lot of positives in being able to support the athletes that are here," says Steinke, the Athletics Canada Throws coach who will also attend the London Olympics. "You don't get lost in the masses here as you would in some of the larger centres."</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/oly-jim-and-heather.jpg" alt="Steacys" title="Jim Steacy and Heather Steacy will represent the U of L and Canada at the London Olympic Games."><div class="image-caption">Jim Steacy and Heather Steacy will represent the U of L and Canada at the London Olympic Games.</div></div></p> <p>The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, coupled with the Community Sports Stadium and a developing sports medicine clinic make the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ a very attractive destination for aspiring athletes.</p> <p>"We're a very unique facility, especially for the throwing events, where you just don't have this capability in the rest of Canada. Every day I have to remind our athletes that this is not able to be done everywhere else," he says, referring to individual training sessions twice per day and access to both indoor and outdoor facilities. "It really is becoming a destination place."</p> <p>Jim (BASc '09) and Heather Steacy did not have to go far to access the U of L, they are Lethbridge products, but they understand how lucky they are to have the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ as their home base and Steinke as their coach.</p> <p>"I can guarantee you I wouldn't be here if not for him," says Jim. "I would have tried to play basketball and been done university in five years and out in the work world by now. There is no way Heather and I would be here without him, he's hands down the best technical coach in North America for the throwing events."</p> <p>His sister Heather echoes that sentiment, saying she was offered opportunities to train elsewhere but never wavered in her commitment to stay home.</p> <p>"I never considered going to the United States for school because I wanted to stay with Larry and I couldn't have made a better choice," she says. "I have a lot of friends who took that route and trained with people who didn't have the knowledge base he has. I couldn't take that chance and I'm really grateful he's as patient as he is and willing to put in the hours he does, it's fantastic and I'm really excited he gets to come to London with us."</p> <p>Steinke says that the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ has attracted a number of graduate athletes from DePaul Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, another from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Washington and still more from the Canadian Olympic Development Team. Liz Gleadle, a Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of British Columbia javelin thrower, took a year off from her studies to come to the U of L and train with Steinke.</p> <p>"I needed to go somewhere with a more focused environment and a coach that could spend time with me full time," she says in advance of her first Olympic appearance. Wellness has been a welcome modern addition to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s Physical Education building, but not much has changed to the core of the nearly 40-year-old facility. That will change over the summer as the PE building gets a facelift.</p><p>Beginning in early May, the existing mechanical and electrical systems will be upgraded, as well as some much needed renovations to several areas of Levels 0, 1 and 2.</p><p>"It'll be a much more comfortable facility in terms of climate. It's going to be significantly brighter," says project manager Jason Baranec.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/wellness-reno-interior.jpg" alt="Wellness Reno interior" title="The interior of the old Physical Education Building will be brought up to standards with the new section of the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness."><div class="image-caption">The interior of the old Physical Education Building will be brought up to standards with the new section of the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness.</div></div></p><p>Aside from a few minor restorations, the PE building hasn't changed since the 1970s when it was first built. When complete, the renovations will reflect the Wellness Centre, creating a more cohesive environment.</p><p>"The driver for this project is the mechanical, electrical and infrastructure upgrades, and then we're doing what we can architecturally to make it look as though the Wellness Centre and the PE building were all built at the same time," says Baranec.</p><p>Renovations include new doors and exteriors to the southeast, southwest and northeast entrances, and linear solar tubes, similar to skylights, which will illuminate the main concrete staircase in the PE building.</p><p>"It achieves the same purpose as a skylight except without having to cut too much concrete," says Baranec. "There's going to be a lot of natural daylight."</p><p>The kinesiology research labs on Level 2 will also be updated with new paint, lighting and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems. Offices on the same level will receive new flooring in addition to the upgrades. Room PE250 will get new windows, and PE275 will see new carpet and millwork. Day-use change rooms on Level 1 will also get an overhaul. The addition of "info walls" which integrate seating and bulletin boards will provide more gathering spaces in the building.</p><p>The majority of the work is expected to be complete before the start of classes in September.</p><p>The project was made possible with a $5.6 million grant from the Alberta government.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:350px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/wellness-reno-stairs.jpg" alt="Wellness Reno exterior" title="New access points will be created, including ramp access, to the southwest entrance."><div class="image-caption">New access points will be created, including ramp access, to the southwest entrance.</div></div></p><p>The creation of a new <a href="http://www.thisismyu.ca/stories/campus-life/2012/05/sports-medicine-clinic-take-wellness-centre-next-level" rel="nofollow">sports medicine clinic</a> is another construction highlight happening in the Wellness Centre this summer.</p><p>The clinic will be located in the PE100 space below the south end of the running track. Once complete, it will house up to four physicians and associated support staff. The space will feature physiotherapy and exam rooms, treatment areas and doctor's offices.</p><p>Project Manager Gene Lublinkhof says the clinic has always been in the plans for the Centre.</p><p>"There was space allotted for it from day one," he says.</p><p>As with the PE building renovations, the clinic's design will also reflect the rest of the Wellness Centre façade. Construction is slated to begin in May, with completion anticipated in the fall.</p><p>Although construction on both projects will be ongoing throughout the summer, arrangements have been made to cease work during Convocation and the Alberta Summer Games to avoid disruption.</p><p>For more information call Baranec at 403-329-2703, or email <a href="mailto:jason.baranec@uleth.ca" rel="nofollow">jason.baranec@uleth.ca</a>. Facilities Department is gearing up for another productive construction season this summer.</p><p>Redevelopment of the campus's western parking lots is set to begin in a few weeks, beginning with the creation of a new entranceway at the northwest corner of Lot E.</p><p>This is just the beginning of the project that will give a facelift to Lots E, F, FS and G along Anderson Hall and the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The result will be more practical parking and the addition of environmentally sustainable and aesthetically pleasing landscaping.</p><p>The revamped design of the parking lots includes bio swales (drainage) and windbreaks, along with improved lighting, security and safety measures for vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The design also addresses storm water management and drainage issues to prevent occurrences such as the flooding that took place in July 2008 at the Wellness Centre.</p><p>The $2.5 million project will be completed over the summer. Parking access will be provided away from construction while the project is underway.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/facilities.jpg" alt="New residence" title="Construction is ahead of schedule on the new residence structure."><div class="image-caption">Construction is ahead of schedule on the new residence structure.</div></div></p><p>Construction of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Quad just north of Markin Hall is also on the summer construction agenda. The public greenspace will feature small rolling hills, plants, water gardens, benches, connecting sidewalks, and other amenities. The project should be completed this fall.</p><p>In early May, the start of construction for a new Sports Medicine Clinic in the Wellness Centre PE100 will begin. The clinic will house four physicians and related support services with space for physiotherapy, exam rooms, a treatment area and offices for doctors and administrative staff. The project should be finished by the end of August.</p><p>Upgrading to the existing mechanical and electrical systems in the centre core of the Wellness Centre will take place from May to September. Construction will work around events such as Spring Convocation and the Alberta Summer Games to avoid any disruption of these activities. Renovations of Levels 0, 1 and 2, including the southeast entrance to the Wellness Centre will also take place at this time.</p><p>While under repair, the Physical Education Tunnel will be closed from June 4 until late September.</p><p>Meanwhile, the third phase of the Aperture Park housing facility is proceeding ahead of schedule. Concrete work is expected to be completed by late fall with the building scheduled to open in July 2013.</p><p>Other planned summer projects include replacing weeping tile along the Breezeway, upgrading the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems, and compartmentalizing firewalls and upgrading the fire alarm system in Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Hall.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/anderson-hall" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Anderson Hall</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge-facilities-department" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Facilities Department</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/physical-education-tunnel" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Physical Education Tunnel</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/wellness-centre" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Wellness Centre</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/markin-hall" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Markin Hall</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/university-hall" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Hall</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-quad" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Quad</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/related-support-services" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">related support services</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/industry-term/electrical-systems" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">electrical systems</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-musicalbum-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">MusicAlbum:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/music-album/fs" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">FS</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/1st-choice-savings-centre" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">1st Choice Savings Centre</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/wellness-centre" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Wellness Centre</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge-facilities-department" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Facilities Department</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-sportsevent-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">SportsEvent:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/sports-event/summer-games" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Summer Games</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-technology-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Technology:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/technology/sports-medicine" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Sports medicine</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Campus promises to be full of activity over summer" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 19 Apr 2012 22:11:28 +0000 trevor.kenney 3241 at /unews
