Students' Union calls to help end poverty

It's an opportunity for members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community to Stand Up Against Poverty.

For the fourth consecutive year, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union (ULSU) is asking people to take a stand against poverty by participating in the Stand Up Against Poverty event, Friday, Oct. 16, 1:30 to 2 p.m. outside the SU Building.

Millions of people around the world are expected to stand up and take action to demand that world leaders end poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The MDGs offer a roadmap to end poverty and its root causes. In September 2000, 189 world leaders adopted the MDGs as part of the Millennium Declaration, agreed to at the United Nations Millennium Summit.

Around the world, between Oct. 16-19, people will be standing up to demand that world leaders fulfill their commitment to the Millenium Development Goals. Last year more than 116 million people stood up and took action.

A host of speakers will address the Stand Up crowd, beginning at 1:30 p.m., leading to the Stand Up moment at 1:55 p.m.
