5th Annual Spooky Science Weekend at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge

On October 21 and 22, children ages five to 12 from across southern Alberta are invited to participate in a variety of Halloween-themed science activities in three separate events at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Spooky Science Weekendoffers numerous fun, hands-on science activities for enthusiastic children, exposing them to several different streams of science and spooky fun!

This event will be filled with science activities sure to excite and engage the younger generation, followed by some captivating and explosive demonstrations. This year’s highlights include creating thin film bookmarks, candy chromatography, and a ghost cannon. The children will also be able to take home many of the spooky/science-y toys they make. Be prepared for some messy, spooky and yucky fun! And of course, we would love to see all participants in spooky costumes.

Please note that, for safety reasons, no more than 100 children can attend a single event, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration for the Spooky Science Weekend is mandatory, but free and will open on October 7 on a first come – first serve basis. Spooky Science Weekend is organized each year by science graduate and undergraduate students at the U of L who volunteer for the national Let’s Talk Science Outreach program. It is their goal to share their passion for science with children of all ages, to increase the public accessibility of science and to inspire students to pursue careers in science. The activities for the event have been designed by graduate student volunteers from several different science disciplines. Overall, more than 20 graduate and undergraduate student volunteers will assist during the day to make it a fun and inspiring experience for everyone involved.

Spooky Science ready to spark fun and interest in the sciences

This week’s Spooky Science activities are designed to give youngsters a taste of science wrapped up in a bunch of Halloween fun.

While he didn’t get the chance to attend such an event when he was a child, Luc Roberts, a doctoral student majoring in biochemistry, now has the chance to organize it through the Let’s Talk Science Outreach program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

“I really enjoy Spooky Science night. Everything’s exciting to younger children; they really like science and nothing is impossible. They have all these ideas and it’s good if you can get them interested in science at a young age,” says Roberts. “I see a lot of students here who came to some of our other Let’s Talk Science events. It’s nice to think that some people are joining the sciences because of us.”

He remembers the curiosity and creativity he had as a child, building with Lego blocks and getting out the screwdriver whenever a household appliance was broken so he could take it apart and see what was inside.

“I could never put it back together but I would take it apart, just because it was kind of cool inside,” he says.

Luc Roberts, a doctoral student, is one of the organizers of the Spooky Science weekend.

Roberts, who grew up in Lethbridge, had a natural affinity for the sciences when he was in high school. When he began his studies at the U of L, he intended to become an engineer. Those plans changed when he found he enjoyed other sciences more than math. Biochemistry piqued his interest, especially after he took his first serious biochemistry course because he had to apply the knowledge he’d learned in previous classes to solve problems.

“It was just incredibly challenging and I really liked it,” he says.

Roberts and several other students have been organizing Spooky Science Weekend with Dr. Ute Kothe, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Let’s Talk Science Faculty supervisor, since September.

“Our biggest goal is to make it fun for the children so we put a lot of energy into finding really good activities, adding new activities, but also having safe activities,” says Kothe. “We want to excite the next generation and their parents for science, so that they enjoy and appreciate science and research and see the power of science in explaining the world.”

Children will participate in 13 activities, including making fake blood, fake snot, screaming balloons and small lava lamps. The evening includes a spooky chemistry show, complete with puking and exploding pumpkins, by Wayne Lippa, a U of L chemistry and biochemistry instructor.

“We have enthusiastic, happy children dressed up in their best costumes being focused and engaged in science and totally loving it. Just seeing their eyes is for me the biggest reward ever,” says Kothe.

Media can choose from three Spooky Science Weekend events, all held in the Atrium of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall. The Friday event goes from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday events go from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.

U of L’s Spooky Science Weekend promises tricks and treats

Children aged five to 12 will get the chance to create eerie sounds, make and play with fake blood and boogers, and draw with black-light paint at the fourth annual Spooky Science Weekend Oct. 24 and 25.

Spooky Science Weekend features three sessions of Halloween-based science activities, including some explosive demonstrations. Each session ends with making ice cream using liquid nitrogen.

The weekend is organized by ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge science graduate students who volunteer for the national Let’s Talk Science Outreach program. People can choose one of three sessions. Weekend Pronghorn action on campus

Pronghorns men's hockey, as well as the men's and women's basketball teams, all have home dates this weekend as Canada West action comes to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus.

Men's Hockey

The Horns (3-6-1 CW, 7-11-1 overall) host the defending Canada West champion and CIS second ranked Alberta Golden Bears (8-1-1CW, 11-2-1 overall) Friday and Saturday nights at Nicholas Sheran Arena (7 p.m. puck drop).

The Horns look to put an end to a four-game losing streak, while the Bears have won three straight after sweeping UBC in Vancouver last weekend.

After only dressing 14 players in Saskatoon over the Halloween weekend, the Horns are slowly getting healthy and should have all but two players back from injury. All three of the Horns wins this season have come at home, while the Bears have yet to lose in regulation time on the road. Their only road blemish is a 3-2 shootout loss in Calgary.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team (0-4 CW, 6-6 overall) hopes to end some early woes and pick up its first victory of the regular season after being swept last weekend by the Regina Cougars. The Horns held leads both nights last weekend in the fourth quarter but were unable hold on versus the fourth ranked Regina Cougars.

This weekend's opponents, Fraser Valley Cascades (0-2 CW) and Thompson Rivers WolfPack (2-0 CW) are coming off bye weeks, with the WolfPack sweeping the Cascades during the conference-opening weekend.

Friday night the Horns face the WolfPack, followed by the Cascades Saturday. Tip-off for both Friday and Saturday nights is 6 p.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team (1-3 CW, 3-6 overall) looks to gain some momentum after a convincing 16-point victory over the Regina Cougars in their series finale last Saturday. Despite struggling offensively, hitting on less than 30 per cent of their shots, the Horns played tough defence, only surrendering 54 points and found a way to win.

Thompson Rivers (0-2 CW) and Fraser Valley (2-0 CW) are coming off their bye weeks. During the opening weekend of conference action, the Cascades swept Thompson Rivers in Kamloops.

Former Pronghorns' guard Barnaby Craddock coaches the Horns' Saturday night opponent, Fraser Valley.

Tip-off is scheduled to follow the women's game both nights at approximately 8 p.m.

Horns Swimming

The swim team hosts Memorial ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ from St John's, Newfoundland for a dual meet Saturday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Max Bell Aquatic Centre.

Women's Hockey

The women's hockey team (3-3 CW, 6-6 overall) will finally return to the ice after being off for the past two weeks.

The Horns face a tough task as they travel to Edmonton to face the perennial women's hockey power Alberta Pandas (10-0 CW).

The Pandas have only surrendered 9 goals in 10 conference games and are coming off a home sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend.

Puck drops both nights at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton at 7 p.m.

Halloween Grinch

My kids call me the Halloween Grinch. The festivities are great, but all that candy makes me ponder ways to stop Halloween from coming. Canadians spend $250 million on Halloween candy annually. Now that's a scary amount of candy consuming.

Here are a few tips to chew on this Halloween to satisfy your sweet tooth without overdoing it.

Love it, or leave it

If you don't love it, don't eat it. Halloween treats pack a frightening amount of calories so be choosy, don't eat it unless it's your favorite treat.

Savor and enjoy

Downing Halloween treats faster than Superman can fly means you hardly taste them and may reach for more. Paying attention to food WHILE you're eating it can be one of the best tricks-on-treats. Simply taste, savor and enjoy the treat as you're having it, and satisfy your craving with a small amount.

Skip the candy bowl

Many businesses put a bowl of Halloween treats on their counters. Nibbling from the candy bowl is one of the scariest ways weight can sneak up on us. Just say no, or limit it to one treat per day for a few days.

Give treats some company

Add a small amount of your favorite Halloween treat to a meal or healthy snack instead of eating it by itself. Fill up on healthy foods first to manage portion size of treats.

It's difficult to avoid treats in a world full of them, but with a few strategies you can have treats and stay on a healthy eating plan.

An eerie evening of theatre

Combine live music, the macabre and magic and you have quite an evening of theatre.

Tales of the Damned, presented by TheatreXtra, invades the David Spinks Theatre Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 with performances nightly at 8 p.m., as well as a 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 1. The haunting double feature showcases work by student playwrights Ben McFee and Corey Joyce.

A Beautiful Hell, by Ben McFee, is a remount of his first play, which was originally mounted at the 2003 SHED the Mask conference in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre.

"This play is incredibly difficult to perform because the actor must portray not only two different characters, but also have them cut each other off and attack each other physically. All the while the actor must remain convincing and in no way comical," says McFee.

The idea for the play started with Ben's father, a well-respected nuclear physicist, explaining to Ben in layman's terms the importance of the passage of time to people's lives.

"I thought it would be interesting to see if a no-time environment could be put on the live stage," he says.

In Comes the Doctor, by Corey Joyce, who won the inaugural U of L Play Right Prize last year, is the second play of the evening.

This creepy, atmospheric show should have audiences feeling uneasy from the opening scene. Audiences get a full helping of everything the Halloween season has to offer — mystery, wonder, and above all … magic.
