Lethbridge Sport Council awards recognize local athletes

The Lethbridge Sport Council will honour individuals and community organizations in 10 categories with achievement awards on April 14, several of them with a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge connection.

The many contributions of Marcus Karpati (BA ’07, BEd ’10) will be acknowledged as he is honoured posthumously with the 2014 Spirit of Sport award. Karpati was a dedicated U of L Pronghorn soccer player who went on to become assistant coach for the men’s soccer program. He was also a beloved summer camp leader, teacher and husband whose passion and enthusiasm touched everyone around him. Karpati passed away last November.

Jim Steacy (BASc ’09) will be honoured as the 2014 Senior Male Athlete. In his 15th year as a track and field athlete, Steacy won a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland and captured his 10th Canadian Senior National Hammer Throw title. Despite having to cope with the unexpected death of his mother last April and recovering from surgeries to both feet, Steacy showed steely determination in completing his most successful season since 2009.

The 2014 Senior Female Athlete award will go to Liz Gleadle, Olympic athlete and a former U of L student. Gleadle overcame injuries that left her unable to compete for most of 2013 to break her Canadian record in women’s javelin. Highlights of the year include being ranked 10^th in the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) world rankings, representing Canada at the Commonwealth Games, and winning a bronze at the IAAF Continental Cup and a gold at the Birmingham Diamond League. In Birmingham, she topped the world record holder and the top three ranked javelin throwers in the world.

Horns men's soccer seeking consistency

After an up-and-down first home weekend of the season, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's soccer team (1-2-1) will remain home this weekend and will have its hands full with the CIS fifth ranked Saskatchewan Huskies (4-0-0).

The first of two games on the weekend is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Community Stadium. Game two goes Sunday, also at 2:15 p.m.

Last weekend versus the MacEwan Griffins, it was a tale of two different efforts for the Horns. After putting forth a dominant performance Saturday afternoon, beating the Griffins 3-0 and not allowing the Griffins to register a shot on goal, the Pronghorns generated a lacklustre performance on Sunday and dropped a 3-1 decision to the same Griffins.

Coming off their first ever CIS Championship tournament appearance last year, the Saskatchewan Huskies have started the season on a torrid pace, outscoring their opponents 16-3 in posting four consecutive wins. The Huskies had a bye last week, but handily beat MacEwan ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ two weeks ago, 5-0 and 5-1.

Following this weekend’s games, the Horns will not be home again until Oct. 18-19 when they host the Calgary Dinos.

Karp's Korner

At the conclusion of Saturday’s game, the men’s soccer program will be hosting an official dedication of 'Karp’s Korner', a playground at the stadium that is being built to recognize and honour former player and current Horns assistant coach Marcus Karpati, who is battling cancer. Marcus has a passion for children and soccer and the Horns soccer program felt that this was a way to combine these passions at a location that means so much to him.

Women hit the road

Following a four-game homestand, the Pronghorns women’s soccer team (0-4-2) begins a stretch of four consecutive games on the road with a pair of matches this weekend in Winnipeg versus the Winnipeg Wesmen.

The Horns are scheduled to take on the Wesmen Friday and Saturday night with both kick-offs scheduled for 6 p.m. (CST).

Through six games this season, the ‘Horns have been sound defensively but their offensive attack has not been able to find its stride. The U of L has only surrendered seven goals in six games, including three goals in the first game of the season, but have only scored one goal in those six games.

Second-year goalkeeper Micaela Stone made her first appearance of the season last weekend and had a solid performance, combining for 13 saves over two games versus the Regina Cougars. She surrendered just one goal, in the Horns' 1-0 loss on Sunday.

Early in the season the Winnipeg Wesmen (0-4-0) have also had their struggles and have yet to earn a point. In a scheduling quirk, the Wesmen have only played one game in each of the past two weekends and were shutout during both games losing 2-0 to the Manitoba Bisons two weeks ago and 2-0 to MacEwan last Saturday.

The Horns will not see action at home again until October 18-19, the final weekend of the Canada West season.

Pronghorns excel as all-canadians

Every year, the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) honours student athletes who excel in sport at the university level, while maintaining an 80 per cent average in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, as Academic All-Canadians. Recently, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge recognized the achievement of 41 outstanding student-athletes, who achieved Academic All-Canadian Honours. This number represents over 22 per cent of our student-athlete body and an increase of six athletes from last year, a remarkable number signifying the importance our program places on ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Following is the list of Pronghorn Athletes who are recognized as CIS Academic All-Canadians for 2008-09.

Pronghorn Athletics weekend preview

The Canada West conference sports schedule gets underway this weekend with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's men's and women's soccer teams taking to the pitch.

The Pronghorns women's team opens Canada West play at home at the new ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Community Sports Stadium. The women host the Manitoba Bisons and Regina Cougars on Saturday and Sunday afternoons respectively, while the men head out on the road to face the Fraser Valley Cascades and Victoria Vikes. Both home games kick off at noon.

Meanwhile, the defending CIS champion women's rugby team and men's hockey team are in non-conference action as they prepare for their upcoming conference schedules.

Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team (0-0) looks to rebound after not qualifying for the post-season last year, and will have some big holes to fill with the graduation of key members from last season's club. Gone from last season are stalwart keeper Megan Lumley, offensive catalyst Kelli Sauers and a pair of defenders, Kristen Dow and Jessica Dearlove.

An area of strength for the Horns this season should be the midfield, with a solid core of returning veterans. Fifth-year senior Sam MacMillan, along with Janelle and Jaclyn Groten, expect to provide some stability up front.

A strong group from the team that qualified for the 2007 playoffs is still intact, and they'll look to rely on solid defensive play to be successful this season.

Men's Soccer

The Pronghorns men's team (0-0) heads out on the road to kick off their portion of the conference schedule with a trip to British Columbia.

The Horns return 12 players from last year's squad, but have a couple of big holes to fill on the back line with the graduation of team captain Ryan Conn and Marcus Karpati.

Michael O'Brien , a 2007 second team all-star, is expected to step up and lead the back line along with returnees Steve Brown, Brett Silbernagel and Justin Lariviere.

After a season away from the team, Matt Medoruma returns to anchor the midfield with fellow sophomores Lucas Rajcic and Cristian Lornezoni. Andrew Malcolm, who will look to add to his 10 career goals, and 2007 Horns' leading scorer Jaycee Neufeld will be counted on to generate some offence from the midfield position.

Up front, 5th year striker Greg Remjin looks to add to his team leading five goals from last season and kick-start a Pronghorn offence that scored a conference low seven total goals last season.

Saturday afternoon, the Horns face the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford, before concluding the road trip Sunday in Victoria versus the Vikes.

Women's Rugby

The women's rugby team sees its first action of the fall, traveling to Atlantic Canada for an exhibition tour that includes three games in three days.

The defending CIS champions kick off the tour on Saturday facing the St. Mary's Huskies in Halifax. Sunday will see a rematch of last year's CIS championship game as the Horns face St. Francis Xavier. Last November, the Horns downed St. FX 29-15 to win their second consecutive national title. St. FX will web stream the game live at http://www.ssncanada.ca/games/. Kick-off is set for 11 a.m. (MT).

The following day, the Horns conclude their trip with a game in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island against the UPEI Panthers.

Men's Hockey

The Men's Hockey team begins its pre-season schedule this weekend with a pair of games. Friday night the Horns travel to Calgary to face Mount Royal Cougars, followed by a game Sunday against SAIT Trojans.
