CAMDO&rsquo;s Holocaust-era Provenance Research and Best-Practice Guidelines Project will develop best-practice guidelines that will empower Canadian institutions to understand and embrace their stewardship responsibilities in Holocaust-era provenance research, and to undertake their own research in the coming years.</p><p>Under the direction of CAMDO Past President and Board Member Dr. Josephine Mills, the research project will be led by Janet M. Brooke, provenance research specialist, and Nancy Karrels, research assistant, who will conduct site visits to examine relevant paintings and documentation, pursue their investigations in libraries and archives in Canada and abroad, and develop best practice guidelines for dissemination. Research results will be posted on a searchable database. Significant support is provided by the National Gallery of Canada through its sharing of office space and research resources.</p><p>&ldquo;Canada&rsquo;s art museums have long declared their will to pursue Holocaust-era provenance research,&rdquo; says Mills, the director/curator of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Art Gallery. &ldquo; But in the absence of resources and expertise on the ground, most have been unable to move forward. With this funding, CAMDO can now support its members in joining this crucial international research effort.&rdquo;</p><p>In addition, the CAMDO project provides leadership, resources and expertise to six participating art museums to enable them to build and publish new research on European paintings in their collections that may have been part of the mass theft or forced sale of Jewish assets during the Nazi era. In pursuing these goals, CAMDO joins international research efforts to aid potential claimants worldwide in their pursuit of restitution and justice.</p><p>The six participating museums for the initiative are the Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Windsor, McMaster Museum of Art, Royal Ontario Museum, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Art Gallery and Winnipeg Art Gallery.</p><p>The CAMDO project builds upon recommendations developed at the Canadian Symposium on Holocaust-era Cultural Property, organized by the Canadian Museums Association and the Canadian Jewish Congress in 2001, and on a CAMDO needs-assessment survey conducted in 2007. Both called upon the federal government for support of Holocaust-era provenance research.</p><p>CAMDO is a professional network of peers &ndash; directors of public Canadian art museums and galleries &ndash; that advances knowledge and expertise among its members, finds solutions to shared challenges and represents the sector on issues of national significance.</p><p>The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Art Gallery houses one of the most significant art collections in Canada. Numbering over 13,000 objects, the holdings include works from Canada, America and Europe, span the 19th and 20th centuries, and continue to grow with 21st century additions. Its major strength is the diversity of the collection, which not only represents a wide range of geographic locations, but also the full spectrum of media, artistic movements, genres and approaches.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge-art-gallery" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Art Gallery</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/department-canadian-heritage" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Department of Canadian Heritage</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/canadian-art-museum-directors-organization-0" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Canadian Art Museum Directors Organization</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/canadian-museums-association" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Canadian Museums Association</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/josephine-mills" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Josephine Mills</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/janet-m-brooke" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Janet M. It was a text used heavily by professors and students in North America and around the world including Malaysia, and Japan. But it was significantly out-of-date,&rdquo; says Goater. &ldquo; The text has been completely rewritten. It is more conceptual and theoretical than it was before.&rdquo;<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:150px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/GoaterBook.jpg" title="Early reviews of the text are glowing." alt=""><div class="image-caption">Early reviews of the text are glowing.</div></div></p><p>The Goater brothers were approached by Cambridge eight years ago about creating a second version of the text. After years of writing and revisions the result is an encompassing product.</p><p>&ldquo;There are texts available that deal with the diversity of parasites and those that tackle their ecology. This is the first text to offer a synthesis of both components,&rdquo; says Goater, adding that the text will be valuable for students focusing on disciplines including biology, immunology, evolution, conservation biology and medical sciences.</p><p>The early reviews of the text are glowing. The book has been described by peers as &ldquo;a true parasitological tour de force&rdquo; and that &ldquo;even the pros will learn from this book&rdquo;. For Goater, the positive reception by his colleagues has made the years of work worth the effort, adding that he hopes the text becomes a valuable tool that will inspire students around the globe for many years.</p><p>Goater and his brother were born in Moose Factory, Ont. and grew up in North Bay. With nature as their playground, the two developed a love of ecology and biology. The brothers were eventually mentored by the same professor, the late Dr. Al Bush (a co-author of the original textbook), at Brandon Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.</p><p>&ldquo;Many people are curious as to how brothers end up in the same field. Certainly, our love of nature was inspired by our surroundings and we were fortunate to share a mentor, but our proximity in age (three years) also played a role,&rdquo; says Goater.</p><p>Goater recalls a childhood incident, when he and his brother were teens, and they came across a sickly fox. In trying to help, the boys brought the fox home not knowing the animal was rabid. While the brothers had to undergo intramuscular injections of the prophylactic drug available at the time, they started to question why the fox was infected, why other animals weren&rsquo;t, and how it was possible that a disease could change the demeanour of an animal. It is this complexity and their fascination with the phenomenon of parasitism that provides the focus of their text.</p><p>The enthusiasm the Goater brothers shared as youth has translated into their enthusiasm for teaching, benefitting students at both the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge and Vancouver Island Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.</p><p>Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Andy Hakin says the release of this new text is emblematic of the type of university the U of L has become.</p><p>&ldquo;Certainly this new text is an excellent career accomplishment for Dr. Goater and the knowledge contained within will benefit students for decades. However, more compelling to me is the experience Dr. Goater&rsquo;s students are subject to in his class. Dr. Goater isn&rsquo;t just teaching from a textbook &ndash; he wrote the textbook,&rdquo; says Hakin.</p><p><strong>Book Overview</strong></p><p>Two core philosophies underlie the second edition of &lsquo;Parasitism&rsquo;, co-authored by Tim Goater, Cam Goater, and Jerry Esch. The first is that complex interactions that occur between parasites and their hosts &ndash; from the molecular cross-talk that occurs at the host-parasite interface, to the effects of parasites on host communities &ndash; are fundamentally ecological. The second is that a real appreciation for the phenomenon of parasitism requires knowledge of how natural selection has shaped parasite life cycles, life histories, and morphologies to solve particular problems associated with the parasitic lifestyle. Thus, for senior undergraduates that are being introduced to the phenomenon of parasitism in animals, the authors see a need for a single text with dual focus on the biodiversity and ecology/evolution of parasites. This dual, interdisciplinary approach, under one cover, is the hallmark of the text. The 17 chapters, eight of which are new since the first edition, have been thoroughly revised to meet the needs of a new generation of parasitology students, whether their interests lie in ecology, conservation biology, evolution, immunology, medical, wildlife, or veterinary sciences.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div weekend.</p><p>The competition, held at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto, featured teams from across Canada and the United States. The U of L team of Dustin Smith, Graeme Glaister, Jenna Friedt, Suneet Kharey, Harland Brandon and Zak Stinson will now move on to the international competition, which will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, Mass. Nov. 1-4.</p><p>&ldquo;This certainly shows that bioengineering research and the aggressive approach we&rsquo;ve taken to study this field is working at the U of L, and that the RNA Institute is playing a key role in both enabling research and training students,&rdquo; says Dr. H.J. Wieden, director of the Alberta RNA (Ribonucleic acid) Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) at the U of L, the Innovates Centre of Research Excellence (iCORE) Chair of Bioengineering and faculty advisor for the U of L&rsquo;s iGEM teams. &ldquo; The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ is poised to continue to be at the forefront of this emerging field.&rdquo;</p><p>The U of L team&rsquo;s project includes developing a bioengineering part that compresses genetic information &ndash; essentially working like a zip drive. Every gene needs DNA, but there is only so much DNA that will fit in a cell. This novel part may allow future bioengineers more flexibility in their work.</p><p>Additionally, the U of L team developed software that quickly determines what DNA is compatible to compress together.</p><p>&ldquo;Each year we are also tasked with exploring the social implications of our project. Our team sought to ensure that our part could not be misused to hide dangerous genes,&rdquo; says team member Harland Brandon (BSc&rsquo;13), a first-year master&rsquo;s student and Winston Churchill High School graduate. &ldquo; We hypothesized that our part could be used to hide dangerous sequences, such as Ricin or Ebola, from gene synthesis companies. We then took it a step further and actually consulted with gene synthesis companies, U of L Risk and Safety Services and even a representative from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Not only do we see our project benefitting the field, but we found through our critical analysis that the potential for misuse is not possible.&rdquo;</p><p>In addition to winning the overall Regional Overgrad award, the U of L also claimed the award for best <a href="http://2013.igem.org/Team:Lethbridge" rel="nofollow">Wiki</a> (website explaining their project).</p><p>iGEM is the premier competition for young scientists interested in the emerging field of synthetic biology, which is quickly leading to new discoveries that will diversify key economic sectors such as pharmaceutical, agriculture, medical diagnostics, clean energy and resource extraction. It also facilitates scientific research and education by establishing and operating the Registry of Standard Biological Parts, a community collection of open source biological components.</p><p>The organization promotes the advancement of science and education by developing an international open community of students and practitioners in schools, laboratories, research institutes and industry.</p><p>Earlier this year, a team of Lethbridge high school students was awarded the coveted Green Brick grand prize at iGEM&rsquo;s High School Jamboree.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/toronto" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Toronto</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/city/boston" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Boston</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/massachusetts-institute-technology" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/rna-institute" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">RNA Institute</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/training-institute" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Training Institute</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-toronto" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/developed-software" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">developed software</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/industry-term/clean-energy" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">clean energy</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/federal-bureau-investigations" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Federal Bureau of Investigations</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/rna-institute" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">RNA Institute</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/massachusetts-institute-technology" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/winston-churchill-high-school" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Winston Churchill High School</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/innovates-centre-research-excellence" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Innovates Centre of Research Excellence</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-toronto" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/research-and-training-institute" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Research and Training Institute</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/zak-stinson" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Zak Stinson</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/hj-wieden" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">H.J. to help cities and towns look ahead and reduce some of the challenges faced across the province by recent flooding.</p><p>Dr. Tom Johnston, who studies human dimensions of natural hazards, said that as much as the recently-announced flood mitigation plan and other measures, such as an expert panel on flood issues, are important and timely steps forward, the processes by which people and the environment engage is what concerns him as flood reduction planning begins.<br /><br /> &quot; With many thousands of people displaced over a short period of time, entire communities affected by flooding and the dramatic change that has brought to how people live, work and interact with each other, the critical element to planning for the future is community engagement.&quot;<br /><br /> Johnston says that structural responses &ndash; constructing flood-control dams, or physically changing or dredging parts of a river to better manage water flow -- need to be matched with non-structural or policy-based responses, such as incorporating the latest and best available flood hazard information into community and land-use planning, and even prohibiting development in high-risk places.<br /><br /> &quot; It is extremely important that in addition to scientists and engineers that we have community involvement in any land-use planning process, not only to ensure that the challenge of flooding is minimized, but also to have the community members be aware of, and fully involved in, the future of their community.&quot;<br /><br /> Johnston adds that social scientists, such as human geographers and other behavioural scientists also need to be included in the discussion because their expertise would complement the expertise of hydrologists and engineers. &quot; One would be foolish to consult a cardiologist about a hip replacement, so why would we rely on experts trained in disciplines that don&#39;t deal with understanding human behaviour for advice on human dimensions of hazard management?&quot;<br /><br /> Johnston says that it&#39;s stating the obvious that no one wishes to go through another flood season like this. &quot;Regardless of how affected a particular community is &ndash; from severe to moderate -- it would be prudent to get people more directly involved and looking ahead not only to next year, but 30 or more years in the future, so they could say they helped to solve a big problem for the next generation of residents. This year&#39;s flooding in the Bow River Basin was extreme. The chances of a flood of that magnitude occurring in any given year are very low &mdash; probably less than one per cent &mdash; but we need to remember that includes next year.&quot;<br /><br /> The Government of Alberta recently rolled out a Flood Hazard Mitigation Plan, which Johnston says will be helpful to increase public awareness about flood-affected areas of the province.<br /><br /> &quot;A central feature of the plan is a web-based interactive map that highlights &quot;Flood Hazard Areas&quot; down to the local scale. The GIS-based system is operator friendly, and if you have used interactive mapping software on your smart phone or some other device, you can easily navigate this system,&quot; Johnston says. <a href="http://environment.alberta.ca/01655.html" rel="nofollow">http://environment.alberta.ca/01655.html</a></p><p>The hazard maps will be useful for home buyers, and should be helpful in guiding flood-proofing efforts and for land-use planning, Johnston adds, but in order for the system to achieve anything close to its full potential, two conditions must be satisfied.<br /><br /> &quot;First, the studies used to delineate flood hazard areas should be as current as possible. Second, local and regional authorities charged with the responsibility for land-use planning must be willing to use the system to guide their decision making, even though this could involve constraining the range of residential location choices available to citizens.&quot;<br /><br /> Johnston says that as of June, 2013, more than 50 flood hazard studies had been completed for the provincial government.<br /><br /> &quot; The most recent studies in and around the communities experiencing severe flooding in June were completed after February, 1996, or 17 years ago.&quot; (<a href="http://environment.alberta.ca/01656.html" rel="nofollow">http://environment.alberta.ca/01656.html</a> )<br /><br /> &quot; Many were completed under the Canada-Alberta Flood Damage Reduction Program, a program which began in 1989, but lapsed in 1999. The studies covered most of the province, including all of the heavily populated ones. A majority of the studies -- approximately 60 per cent -- are now up to two decades old. During that time, communities have changed, and the physical geography of entire regions have changed as residential and commercial developments increased.&quot;<br /><br /> Given the recent flood events, future hazard zone mapping should be more consistent, Johnston says.<br /><br /> &quot; We are dealing with dynamic systems, many of which are under increasing pressure from a variety of human activities, so it is prudent to make sure they are done regularly.&quot;<br /><br /> When a panel chaired by George Groeneveld, then the Alberta MLA for the constituency of Highwood (encompassing High River and surrounding areas) submitted its report following the 2005 floods (website link below) Johnston says it included in its recommendations that Alberta Environment develop a maintenance program to ensure that the flood risk maps are updated when appropriate. &quot; This is a recommendation that many in the flood mitigation and hazard response communities would like to see acted upon sooner rather than later.&quot;<br /><br /> As well, Johnston says that any future planning process should also include a review of legislation surrounding land development to require that the level of flood hazard must be taken into account in the course of land development decisions.<br /><br /> &quot; The current regulations state that local authorities &#39;may&#39; require developers to stipulate &quot;&hellip;if the land subject to the application is located in a potential flood plain.&#39; The province may wish to raise the bar in light of recent events.&quot; <a
