While his goal was to follow molecular events during the embryogenesis of the particular alga that he was studying, the 2-D gel electrophoresis technique that he developed could be applied to protein mixtures from any source. While still a student he prepared a paper describing this method. This paper is now the sixth most cited paper in biology and chemistry.

RICHARD DAVIDSON

The 11th Chancellor of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, Richard Davidson represented the institution with pride, emphasizing its connections with the community.

Davidson's first formal appointment with the U of L was with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Senate in 1983. knowledge of the classroom with hands-on education found in the workplace. Experiential learning is one of the best ways to develop new skills," says Dr. Mary Thompson, who became the program's director in its second year and helped shape it for the next 10 years.

With her background as a professional recruiter, Thompson introduced a client-centred approach to the program, which ensured it met the changing needs of the business community.

Steve Craig and Dr. Mary Thompson are keen on getting students co-op placements that will further their career goals.

"We explored what we could do for employers," she says. "And that focus also ensured success for our students because we prepared them well with workshops and one-on-one counselling before sending them to employers."

Thompson stresses that the program was built and refined based on scholarly research.

"We researched business trends and learning curves," she says.

As a result of that research the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge was the first co-op program in Western Canada to move away from the standard four-month work terms to longer work placements, ranging from eight to 16 months.

"We discovered that four months was just not long enough," says Thompson. "We were able to extend the placements because we had the hard evidence that proved their value. We were leaders in removing rigidity from the program, which was really advantageous for both students and employers."

It was also under Thompson that the co-op office started providing placements for its own students as junior administrators in the program.

"We were unique in that we used co-op in co-op," she says with a smile.

Steve Craig, the current director of the program, was one of those students who did his work placement in the U of L co-op office.

"We just never let him leave," she says. "He's doing a fabulous job now as director."

Co-op continues to work well for students and employers.

"The real beauty of the program is that it is multi-pronged," says Craig. "Co-op is more than a job experience; it can really broaden a student's horizons. Students benefit from having mentors in their workplace, obtaining work experience, making valuable connections in their industry and finding their fit. They also bring what they have learned back into the classroom, which enriches learning for other students."

Co-op placements also enable students to explore possible career directions.

"My co-op placement launched my career in the oil-and-gas industry. I was able to try on a business that I really knew nothing about," says Thomas Latta (BMgt '97), who was hired full time after his placement and is now manager of Operations, Accounting and Finance Solutions for Enerplus Corporation in Calgary. "I discovered I really liked the work and the industry. The placement helped me discover what the industry was all about and gave me a career direction."

Students have worked locally, provincially and internationally in places as far afield as France, Ireland, Ghana, Botswana, Malaysia, Vietnam, South Africa and India.

"The lower cost of living, as well as the uniqueness and relevance of emerging economies, make it interesting and possible for students wanting to do an international placement," Craig says.

Over the past 20 years, participation in the program has grown.

"In its first year co-op had three students," says Craig. "In 2010, more than 200 work terms were completed by students in the Faculty of Management."

For 20 years co-op has continued to develop and maintain successful relationships with businesses across the country and beyond.

"The relationships are important," says Craig. "We are pleased that alumni of our program think so much of it that once they are in positions to do so, they hire U of L co-op students."

Employers benefit from co-op, too. Businesses can use co-op placements to fill short-term needs and work with prospective employees before making a long-term commitment. For many companies, co-op students have become part of their recruiting strategy.

"The companies I've worked for consider co-op students a key part of staff development," says Latta. "At Enerplus, we are building our co-op component and recognize the value in seeing prospective employees at work before we hire them permanently. If we have an open position, we will look at our co-op students first because with them we already know there is a good fit."

Co-op continues to be a win-win-win situation for students, businesses and the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.

"It provides employers with motivated and intelligent employees now and potentially for the future, while offering students an opportunity to learn and develop as professionals and determine a career fit," says Craig. "I see the value of co-op continuing for everyone involved."

<div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body He always told me he never should have given up that property and, although I didn't understand it, I could tell that it was a painful memory for him."

Allan was one of many settlers who, searching for a better life, travelled thousands of miles across Canada in the early years of the last century. He farmed a quarter section of land near Nanton before losing the property during the 1920s and moving his family into town. Visiting the property as a child resonated with Coutts, who felt an attachment to the land he couldn't explain at the time. He now believes the homestead provides him with a sense of place but is also symbolic of the difficulties of prairie life.

"We look at beautiful things and we see only the good," says Coutts. "We forget that our ancestors and our forebears stumbled and fell and picked themselves up and kept going. Part of our history is the history of struggle."

While crops sometimes failed, the prairie soil proved fertile ground for art and culture. At the age of 12, Coutts caught the attention of Dorothy Dowhan, a local newspaper editor with friends in the artistic community, and started visiting art galleries, theatres and even gardens as her guest.

"Dorothy took a great interest in young people and would spot individuals who were showing interest in wider subjects," says Coutts of the woman he describes as a mentor. "She had a lot of friends, and I met some very interesting people through her."

<img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/coutts-home_3.jpg" title="Respectful of its history, the new Coutts homestead faces west to the Porcupine Hills, foothills of the Canadian Rockies, which are often topped in snow even as the gardens bloom. The original buildings scattered across this sweep of prairie represent a coming home for this southern Alberta boy.

It was Dorothy who gave a then 17-year-old Coutts his first piece of art.

"Dorothy gave me a little oil by John Cook – who's still around and still painting – when I went to university," says Coutts, who hung the picture in his dorm room while completing a law degree at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta.

Armed with a single painting and an appreciation developed over years and years of looking, Coutts began buying art on his own.

"I'd been going to galleries for 10 years and I just kept looking," explains Coutts. "Toward the end of my university days I would splurge and buy a print for $50. Gradually I became a bit of a pack rat."

Collector is more accurate. Hesitant at first, Coutts soon began collecting with determination and ferocity, qualities he would demonstrate in his professional life as well.

"I studied law because I thought I could get a job when I finished," admits Coutts. "I didn't know what I wanted to do, but I was very interested in public life."

Admiring the progressive politics of provincial Liberal leader, Harper Prowse, Coutts entered the political scene in 1953 with a desire to affect change. Ten years later, Coutts was made secretary to Liberal Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and was on the front lines of Canadian politics.

"I enjoyed being in the fray," says Coutts, who worked with Pearson for three years before going to Harvard Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ to complete his MBA. "Politics is always drama. There's always something happening and it seemed important but it was also a kind of entertainment."

Canadians saw profound change in those three short years: medicare, the pension plan, old-age security, the National Economic Council and the new Canadian flag were all introduced.

"It was a very short period when a great deal of good was done for this country," says Coutts proudly.

After completing his MBA, Coutts started a consulting firm where he was working when Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau appointed him principal secretary in 1975. He worked with Trudeau for six years before leaving to run in a byelection, which he lost by 200 votes.

Homestead photos by Andy Hakin.

Through it all, Coutts diligently continued collecting art.

"You get to like things and think you need things," says Coutts. "You also train your eye so that while once in a while you buy a bad picture, generally, you buy things that you like and most are really good. In the beginning I didn't believe there was any theme to it, but over the years I acquired a good deal of western Canadian art."

The art in the Coutts collection is united by its subject matter: endless skies over empty fields, faded grain elevators contrasted against brilliant sunsets, soaring birds floating in wild winds, all depicting the variety of the southern Alberta landscape.

Understanding that the images in his collection represented more than an affinity for prairie scenery, Coutts returned to southern Alberta in 1988 and reclaimed his grandfather's homestead. With a keen eye for detail, Coutts set to work, turning the soil once broken by his grandfather into a prairie garden and bringing his own vision for the property to life.

"It seems to me the more attractive and exciting and imaginative and creative a place is in your mind, the more painful it is to be away from it," says Coutts, who is grateful for the opportunity to return each summer to the community he knew as a child.

The new homestead is very much an expression of Coutts himself. Set on the vast, flat canvas of the Prairies, buildings are scattered across the land – the original homestead; a chicken house, now a guest suite; a barn; and an old ice house and granary, moved from Coutts's mother's neighbouring property. Each structure provides a seemingly effortless organization to the landscape where gardens flourish, and the plots and paths are carefully carved in such a way to welcome visitors and encourage exploration.

His approach has been bold and the transformation remarkable, but Coutts has not forgotten the struggles of life on the Prairies.

"When you look at the place now with the gardens, grasses and trees and the beauty depicted in the photographs and paintings, that's one thing," says Coutts. "But for many years, for those who came first, it was a very difficult and painful place to live."

Respectful of its history, the new Coutts homestead faces west to the Porcupine Hills, foothills of the Canadian Rockies, which are often topped in snow even as the gardens bloom. The original buildings scattered across this sweep of prairie represent a coming home for this southern Alberta boy.

"A piece of you will always stay wherever it is that you came from, and you also carry a piece of that landscape with you," explains Coutts. "Fortunately, I've been able to return to the place that means so much to me."

This story first appeared in SAM Magazine. Kelsey Thibodeau, a Taber, Alta. native, is a fourth-year Management student on an international exchange.

I'm studying at Kansai Gaidai Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in Hirakata, which is located in the Osaka Prefecture. Hirakata is located more than 600 km from Sendai in the Miyagi prefecture where the earthquake and tsunami hit hard, just to give readers an idea of how far I am located from the main point of destruction.

This is the second earthquake that I have felt since I arrived in February and I must say that this earthquake felt completely different than the first. I was at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in the computer lab when the earthquake occurred just before 3 p.m. on Mar. 11, 2011. Even though the strength of the earthquake felt in Hirakata was much less than other places, the instant that the earthquake began I felt as if I was going to pass out, I experienced symptoms of vertigo during the whole earthquake (which is common with earthquakes) which lasted over 2 minutes long. I thought there was something wrong with me but when I looked I could see the computers slowly moving back and forth, so I immediately knew what was going on.

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge fourth-year Management student, Kelsey Thibodeau, currently in Japan on an international exchange.

This earthquake was different in the sense that everything was not violently shaking, but it felt as if massive waves were hitting the outside of the building, rocking it hard, but very slow. The girl sitting next to me said she was experiencing the same feelings of motion sickness. The Japanese are so used to earthquakes that none of the Japanese students seemed concerned about what was going on, but all of the foreign students were paying close attention to what was happening.

After the earthquake, everything continued on as normal and I headed to class, still feeling very off balance. I hate to admit this, but I felt so strange after the earthquake that my teacher told me to go home because I didn't look my best. When I got home I thought it was just an earthquake and nothing happened until my dad called me asking me what was going on because the news of the disaster instantly reached home. I found out what was going on through listening to CNN via skype.

It was/is hard to find out information about what is going on because we only get Japanese television stations here at the dorms. The only information we find out is through the internet, just like everyone else in the world – except we are in Japan. I didn't realize the extent of the damage until the next day when the internet was flooded with information. I say I didn't realize because the area that I am in was unaffected by the earthquake. It feels SO strange to be in Japan while this natural disaster is occurring, yet I am physically unaffected by it.

Thibodeau observed many groups of Japanese citizens, like these, in Kobe and Osaka following the quake. They were soliciting help for those affected in the coastal areas.

I travelled to Kobe & Osaka two days after the earthquake and even there, in the big cities, people are carrying on with their daily lives, knowing in the back of their minds what is going on but on the outside you could never tell anything was happening in Japan at the moment. I think it is important for people to understand that this natural disaster has not damaged the entire country because information is only given out on the affected areas. This is probably the strangest thing to me that I've ever experienced. I know I'm in Japan, and I'm aware of the magnitude of distress the country is going through, yet the area I am in seems like nothing has even happened. I feel confused because I don't know what to feel or how to react, but I've decided to learn from what the Japanese people around me are doing; I'm going to follow their lead. I actually went to the grocery store a day after the earthquake and tsunami to buy extra food and water, and I looked around to see what all the people were buying and they all seemed to be shopping as if a natural disaster did not just occur in their country, but I still bought extra water and non-perishable food just to be safe.

I'm trying my best to keep myself collected but it is hard. Some students at the school have left the country already, some have tickets booked just in case, and some seem completely at calm with the situation. I feel nervous and anxious because I'm not sure of what to expect about anything here as parts of Japan were completely destroyed in a matter of minutes.

Tonight I have found out the following: "On Sunday, JMA said that based on the occurrence of aftershocks so far, there is a 70 per cent chance that an aftershock of 7.0 or greater will hit by 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday. After Wednesday morning, the chance of such an earthquake happening will be about 50 per cent until 10 a.m. local time on Saturday."

With this new information, and concerns of the nuclear power plants, I'm not sure what to expect. Everyone is being kept on the edge of their seats with what we know, but the best I can do is be prepared and try to follow what the locals are doing since I am a foreigner in a country experiencing their "greatest crisis since WWII", according to the Japanese Prime Minister. I'm counting my blessings knowing that I am extremely lucky to be in a safe area of Japan and just hoping for the best throughout this next week and praying for everyone affected by this crisis.

As I am sending this, I just felt an aftershock. It makes this situation seem so much more real.

Kelsey Thibodeau

<div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics You get one remarkable guy by the name of Blair McMurren (BA '96), who just happens to be the U of L's 2010 Alumnus of the Year.

Born and raised in Lethbridge, McMurren graduated from the U of L with Great Distinction, receiving the Faculty of Arts and Science Gold Medal and the Governor General's Silver Medal for Highest Undergraduate Class Standing. His pursuit of academia didn't stop there. McMurren was selected as a Rhodes Scholar and immediately went to Oxford Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ to pursue graduate studies.

Dr. Blair McMurren, at home in Ottawa.

An English major at the U of L, particularly fond of the works of James Joyce, McMurren focused his attention at Oxford on furthering his understanding of English literature. He earned an Honours BA in English language and literature, and went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in comparative literature as well as an MA in translation from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Surrey at Guildford.

Ask McMurren what he initially planned to do after completing his education, and he'll admit that he wasn't really sure.

"Some far-sighted senior officials with the federal public service came recruiting at Oxford, and they made a compelling pitch for returning to Canada and making a difference in public policy," he says. "The idea of working on a variety of key files and having some influence on what would be happening in my country resonated with me."

McMurren returned from the U.K. in 2002 to begin work with the Department of Canadian Heritage. He also helped to launch a government initiative that has since become the Recruitment of Policy Leaders program. Since 2009, McMurren has been a senior analyst with the Priorities and Planning secretariat at the Privy Council Office – the department that supports the Prime Minister and Cabinet in all policy and decision-making actions. He is the lead analyst responsible for briefing senior officials and engaging with federal departments on Cabinet decisions related to climate change, clean energy and the environment.

McMurren concedes that the connection between English literature, translation and public policy isn't obvious, but says that his academic background fostered intrigue for the work he does today.

"Closely examining James Joyce's approach to translation is where many things started to come together for me," says McMurren. "So much of human history comes to us through the lens of translation. Freud, Marx, the Bible, what have you – all history-shaping works, and all are translated. Joyce was obsessed with the concept of translation, which ultimately got me thinking about how cultural politics work, and how ideas and issues move from one cultural context to another. It's not a huge stretch from there to cultural policy, which is all about how you tell your story as a country. It's a complex task, and in Canada we do it bilingually and multiculturally, which makes it richer but even harder."

While McMurren intends to continue his career in public policy, he would also like to branch out, perhaps by teaching sessional courses at a university. He's also very keen to give back to the school where his illustrious career began.

"I'd like to help U of L students find out all that's available to them after they leave the university," he says. "This award is a very humbling thing. I'd like to offer my experience to students and perhaps do something to help bridge the famous policy/research divide. I think we all have an interest in getting a broader, better dialogue going about the issues facing Canadian society."

Call for Nominations

The Alumni Association is now was recently appointed to Privy Council by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, Laurie Hawn, joins Casson as the two newest Privy Councillors.

"I am pleased today to announce the appointments of Laurie Hawn and Rick Casson as Privy Councillors, following their many years of dedication and hard work in the House of Commons, including on Canada's engagement in Afghanistan," says Harper. "Both Mr. Hawn and Mr. Casson continue to meet the highest standards of public service to the benefit of their constituents and all Canadians."

Long recognized as an honourable man by the constituents of his southern Alberta riding, Casson now carries the official designation of "Honourable" to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada following a ceremony at Rideau Hall.

Prior to his election as a Member of Parliament, Casson served for many years as a Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge employee (manager of the printing services department), and as a community volunteer and elected county representative in his hometown of Picture Butte, Alta.

"This is an unexpected and very special honour," says Casson.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, only hours after being sworn-in as the 28th Governor General of Canada, presided over Casson's swearing in ceremony.

Privy Councillors are members of The Queen's Privy Council for Canada, established under the Constitution Act, 1867 to advise the Crown. The Privy Council includes all past and present ministers, as well as a number of select persons. The Governor General, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, appoints members to Privy Council.

"I am very grateful to Prime Minister Harper for considering me for this appointment, which is given to very few Canadians outside the ranks of government ministers, governor generals and chief justices," says Casson.

"It was an honour to have Canada's new governor general preside over my swearing in as Privy Council member among his inaugural duties, as I had attended Mr. Johnston's own swearing-in ceremony earlier today."

Casson is a five-term Member of Parliament, who has been named Chair of the Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan and Chair of the Alberta Caucus. He was also named the Canadian Chair of the Permanent Joint Board on Defence, a Canadian-American advisory body established at Ogdensburg, NY in 1940 by Prime Minister Mackenzie King and United States President F.D. Roosevelt.

"On behalf of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge we would like to congratulate Rick on being appointed as a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada," says U of L Board of Governors Chair Bob Turner.

"The fact that very few Canadians are appointed as Privy Councillor makes this appointment all the more exceptional. Canada, and more specifically southern Alberta, is a better place because of his service."

U of L President Mike Mahon adds that, considering the contributions Casson has made to the university, as both an employee and elected Member of Parliament, the U of L could not be more proud of his appointment.

"The U of L has benefited enormously from Rick's hard work over the years, and we cannot think of a more worthy person to receive this prestigious appointment."

Related Topics

City:

Ogdensburg

Facility:

Privy Council

Rideau Hall

Privy Councillors

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge

Former Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬

IndustryTerm:

printing services department

Organization:

Permanent Joint Board on Defence

Queen's Privy Council for Canada

Privy Council

Board of Governors

Special Committee

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge

Canadian Mission in Afghanistan

House of Commons

Person:

Mackenzie King

F.D. Throughout the 2001 mayoralty campaign I had promoted the concept of a community-driven economic development model. Bill and several of his friends made it clear that it was not only a good idea, it was one they expected me to implement forthwith. And with Bill's guidance and support, Economic Development Lethbridge moved from vision to reality.

I was deeply moved at the time that a U of L president should be so engaged in his community. As I was to learn, this was just the first of a series of partnerships between the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and the city that Bill had a hand in creating.

What kind of president has Bill been? Energetic, charismatic, passionate, considerate and above all, focused on the needs of students. Bill and Elsa have played important parts in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge story over the last 10 years, but they have also earned the respect and love of people they have come in contact with throughout the community. Good luck, my friend!

Robert Tarleck, Ako-taosi
Mayor, City of Lethbridge

What I appreciate most about Bill was that he was a great and enthusiastic supporter of the community and local projects. He considered the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ to be a partner with the Lethbridge community at large, and was always prepared to step up and get involved.

Paul Pharo
President 2009/2010, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce;
U of L Senate Member

I have watched the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA) grow into a significant contributor to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. I recognize and thank you for your support, encouragement and participation in the ULAA endeavours to grow within its own parameters and to participate to make the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ better and stronger. Thank you for allowing me to be a friend. Good health as you proceed into the next stage of your active life.

Bob Hironaka (Dsc '02)
Chancellor emeritus

My first meeting with Bill was in my office. He insisted on coming to me. How about that! To me, it was a generous thing to do and indicated his strong character personified by a professional humbleness.

Bill Cade was a great president of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. I thank him and Elsa and won't ever forget them.

Clint Dunford
Former MLA, Lethbridge West

Bill Cade has the best memory for names! He can walk into a room and address each person by their correct name, and if he is meeting you for the first time, you can bet he will remember it the next time you meet. I was on a shoot at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Theatre and Bill walked by and said, "Hi, Dory…Hi, Ted!" Ted, our cameraperson, was completely floored that Bill would remember his name! That is a real gift!

Dory Rossiter
CTV Lethbridge; former U of L Senate member

I have many reasons to thank Bill Cade, but the one that has meant the most to me is the interest and support he has shown for my mother and her work over the years. My mother is the Yiddish-language writer Chava Rosenfarb. Yiddish and the rich literature and culture associated with it are little known in Alberta. This is not surprising since the language itself is dying, a victim of the Holocaust. Today, there are few speakers and fewer readers. To have someone promote and encourage the work of a Yiddish writer the way Bill has done is truly remarkable and truly praiseworthy. To date, the U of L is the only university in Canada to have given an honorary degree to a Yiddish writer, despite the fact that Canada has been host to a vibrant Yiddish culture for more than a hundred years. I have no words to express how very moving this is to me and how grateful I am.

Dr. Goldie Morgentaler
Professor, Department of English

Bill's attribute of treating everybody with respect has endeared him to friends and business associates alike. When we met with a number of people in Ottawa promoting the U of L he impressed everyone with his passion and demeanour.

The first time I was in his office at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ my questions regarding his collection of crickets quickly led to a lesson on the reproductive machinations of the species.

Bill took great delight in introducing future Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge students to the fascinating world of crickets.

I'm not sure how many people know that Bill is a hot rodder at heart and spent time at the drag strip in his day. I promised to take him for a blast in my 1967 GTX – haven't done that yet but will.

Dr. Cade! Make sure you take the time to reflect on what you have meant to the U of L and to southern Alberta, how much better the institution and all of us are for having you come to town. I hope you and your wonderful bride continue to enjoy peace and happiness.

Rick Casson
MP, Lethbridge; Former U of L employee

I organized a luncheon for a visiting Chinese delegation that Bill attended. Roast beef was served along with a side of horseradish. A dish of horseradish was placed with the starting salad at every seat during the meal. Bill is very charismatic and of course was the focus of our luncheon. As we started the meal, he picked up his dish of horseradish and poured it all over his salad (thinking it was salad dressing). Before we knew it, every visitor from China was doing the same! In the following moments, everyone was digging into their salads and not understanding our instructions of "it's for the beef." Garden salad is not served in China and with the horseradish it must have been an unusual culinary experience for our guests – but a great story for us!

Laurel Corbiere
Manager, International Centre for Students

Bill at convocation is a dynamo. He rises to the occasion and gives a barnburner of a speech. We all feel better about ourselves and stand a little taller.

Dr. John C. Poulsen
Assistant Dean, Faculty of Education

I remember when Bill told the story of the streaker in the new stadium.... After an enthusiastic monologue of the young man's escapade, without cracking a smile, and with his deep Texas accent, he said, "Of course my official stance is I am shocked and appalled." Most of us were nearly in tears laughing by this point.

Mari Daunt
U of L Senate Member

"The thing I appreciated most about Bill was that not only did he understand what his job was and did it well, but he understood what his job wasn't, and he did that well, too. He and Elsa will be missed...."

Richard Davidson
U of L Chancellor

Bill Cade… My heartfelt congratulations on your upcoming retirement from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.
Students, staff and the community of Lethbridge have all benefited greatly from your leadership, ingenuity and success. You can take pride in everything you and this institution have accomplished during your tenure.
Under your leadership, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's offerings have evolved to include the first-time admission of PhD students to the School of Graduate Studies. Program decisions like these will help the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ to continue to prosper as part of Campus Alberta.

Please accept my best wishes for a fulfilling and healthy retirement. Wherever the road takes you, may happiness follow.

Ed Stelmach
Premier of Alberta

It would be impossible to list all of Bill's accomplishments here. For me, his most enduring legacy will be the passion and joy that were always contagious whenever I spoke with him. I will miss working with him in our official capacities, but I'll always consider Bill a personal friend.

Greg Weadick (Bsc '77)
MLA, Lethbridge WEST

Five years ago, when I was being recruited for the presidency of Lethbridge College, I did lots of research on the institution and the community. When I found out that Dr. Bill Cade was a fellow Longhorn (we're both graduates of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Texas at Austin) I gave him a call to find out his perspective on Lethbridge as well as his impression of the relationship between the U of L and Lethbridge College.

I remember I was between flights and Bill spent 30 or 40 minutes with me on the phone, answering my questions and providing his insights. He also directed me to a U of L student who had transferred over from the College who was very helpful in providing further information.

I have very much enjoyed working with Bill. . . He is a colleague and a friend. I hope we'll still have a chance to catch up as he continues with his teaching and research at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. Conversely, I would be happy to visit him in San Antonio, perhaps we could take in a football game at UT. Hook 'em, Horns!

Dr. Tracy Edwards
President and CEO, Lethbridge College

Bill Cade is one of that rare breed who truly understands all of the roles they're expected to play in their position. He's equal parts academic, administrator, scientist and statesman. And he can express his passion in each of those roles in a way that everyone can understand, appreciate and share. He can even make crickets sound exciting!

Never did I ever imagine I would develop such a strong respect and working relationship with someone whose passion is bugs – or, as Bill would say, the Phylum Arthropoda – however, that is exactly what happened. During Bill's presidency, I have come to respect and admire his knowledge, understanding, passion and commitment to post-secondary education. Bill has been a tireless advocate for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge and our province's overall post-secondary system. His contributions to improving both are immeasurable. Best wishes, Bill, in your upcoming professional endeavours, and thank you for your guidance and leadership.

Rob Renner
MLA, Medicine Hat Constituency; Minister of Environment

Bill Cade was the right person at the right time to continue the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's progression to an elite comprehensive institution. During his term, the alumni base almost doubled in size. With his encouragement and support, it has become an increasingly important component of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community. Indeed, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, city, province and country will miss Bill and Elsa's involvement, enthusiasm and commitment.

Don Chandler (BA '73)
President, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Alumni Association

Given all that Bill was responsible for, I admired him for always putting the students first and for his infectious passion for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.

Karen Bartsch
U of L Board of Governors Member

Bill is a very sincere, welcoming man, who converses easily and comfortably with people from all walks of life.
When I mentioned that my daughter had started her first year at U of L , Bill encouraged me to have her give him a call and stop by for a visit sometime. For a few months she procrastinated, thinking he would be too busy and was not really serious. Finally, when she did make an appointment to visit Bill, she found that he was not only the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ president, but moreover he was a friend – a friend from a different walk of life, a friend from a different generation – but someone who made every effort to be a friend.

The world would be a better place if more people were like Bill Cade.

Happy trails, Bill.

Evan Berger
MLA, Livingstone-Macleod

Bill Cade is generous, gracious, kind and clear about his commitment to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and the people involved.

Susan Burrows-Johnson
CEO/Executive Director, Galt Museum and Archives

I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your retirement as president of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.
For a decade, you have served as an exceptional visionary, ambassador and innovator for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. Through your guidance, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge has developed a reputation for teaching and research excellence, and it has become a key part of Campus Alberta.

Doug Horner
Deputy Premier; Minister of Advanced Education and Technology

Southern Albertans pride themselves on their ability to cope with our climate. Many more were received than could be added to that publication, so they are posted below.

+++++

The thing I appreciated most about Bill was that not only did he understand what his job was – and did it well, but he understood what his job wasn't – and he did that well too. He and Elsa will be missed....

Richard Davidson Q.C.
U of L Chancellor
_ _

Dr. Cade hadn't officially started his term as President. I had a wall of students in front of me, all filling out forms. As Dr. Cade walked by the Registrar's Office, he looked over in my direction, smiled and waved.

I immediately looked behind me, as I thought Leslie or Debi was standing behind me, and he was waving to them. I thought to myself.....he couldn't possibly be waving to me, but he was. That simple gesture made my day!

In past years the Registrar's Office had instituted a photo line-up at convocation. After students came off the dais and had their picture taken, a lot of them were a bit disoriented and would walk off in the wrong direction.

I was positioned at the front to guide them with Mrs. Cade unofficially assisting me in her front row seat by pointing them in the right direction.

Candace Dueck
_ _

The one thing I will always remember about Dr. Cade is his ability to warm up any room with his intellect, passion, energy and friendly Texas drawl. His charismatic qualities and initiatives have opened many doors of opportunity for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ will forever benefit from his vision and accomplishments.

The one thing that I will never understand is why Dr Cade would travel half way around the world to study Crickets? I wish Dr. and Elsa Cade the very best of health and happiness in the future.

C. Bill seemed to approach everything as an "adventure".

As the MLA for Cypress – Medicine Hat, I would like to thank Bill (and his wife) for all the contributions they made not only to the U of L, but to Southern Alberta as a whole. I will miss working with him in our official capacities, but I'll always consider Bill a personal friend.

Greg Weadick

_ _

As Regional Minister for Southern Alberta I would like to take a moment to thank you for your years as President at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.

You have shown true leadership and dedication to your students and to the community both at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and across Alberta.

Under your leadership, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge has become one of Canada's finest institutions and I have been proud to work with you and your team to ensure the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ has the resources it needs to continue to be a success.

Congratulations on the past ten years with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and I wish you all the best on your retirement.

The Honourable Jim Prentice, PC, QC, MP
Minister of the Environment

_ _

Bill Cade is generous, gracious, kind and clear about his commitment to the university and the people involved.

Susan Burrows-Johnson
CEO/Executive Director
Galt Mueseum and Archives

_ _

Although I do not have a long history of knowing Bill and I do not have any specific story to share I do want to acknowledge that he was one of the main reasons I have reengaged with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge after 18 years.

When I first met Bill Cade in my office in Calgary it was shortly after becoming a donor of the Markin Hall project.

We were discussing the progress and development of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge and the current projects being undertaken.

As I listened to Bill speak I could feel his passion and excitement for what he was building.

He believed in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, he believed the people working at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, and he believed in the difference he was making for the students.

He asked me to become involved with the Advancement Committee and I decided immediately, knowing, that he is a man of action and really does make things happen.

He smiled when I asked him if committee work and my involvement would actually get results - he said - "We want individuals involved with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ that will make a difference".

So, what I am really saying is he is the reason an Alum like myself is involved with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. Bill's leadership will no doubt be a loss to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, however, his vision will be carried on by the next generation.

I wish Bill and Elsa all the best in the future and I look forward to his life updates in the future.

Patrick C. Forrest
Vice-President & Senior Investment Advisor
BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc.

_ _

I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your retirement as President of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.

For a decade, you have served as an exceptional visionary, ambassador, and innovator for the university. Through your guidance, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge has developed a reputation for teaching and research excellence, and it has become a key part of Campus Alberta.

Your participation on numerous committees, boards, and other organizations has been greatly appreciated and I look forward to working together in the near future.

Again, congratulations on such a successful career and best wishes in all your future endeavours.

Doug Horner
Deputy Premier
Minister of Advanced Education and Technology

_ _

Bill Cade was the right person at the right time to continue the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's progression to an elite comprehensive institution.

During his term, the Alumni Association has almost doubled in size; and, with his encouragement and support, has become an increasingly important component of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community. Indeed, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, City, Province and Country will miss Bill and Elsa's involvement, enthusiasm and commitment.

All the best to each of you in the future.

Don Chandler
President, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Alumni Association

_ _

As a member of the Board of Governors, I would like to thank Bill for his exemplary leadership and I wish him well in his future endeavors. Given all that Bill was responsible for, I admired him for always putting the students first and for his infectious passion for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ if Lethbridge.

Karen Bartsch
Board of Governors Public Member

_ _

I am not sure if I am too late with this but I would like to mention the first tour I went on after a senate meeting of the theater. I made a casual comment to Bill about recruitment for the university while on the tour. By Monday he had John Kincaid in contact with me to follow up on the comment! He doesn't miss a thing!

Also I am not sure you were there when he told the story of the streaker in the new stadium....after an enthusiastic monologue of the young man's escapade, without cracking a smile with his deep Texas accent, he said, "of course my official stance is I am shocked and appalled"". Most of us were nearly in tears laughing by this point.

I am sure you ave lots of things submitted but these are two things I remember that endear him to many.

Mari Dauny
Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Senate Member

_ _

I recall a story told by Bill in his earlier years at the U of L. He arrived at the Coutts border with a collection of insects The Immigration person asked Bill to explain why he was bringing insects into Canada from the USA.

Bill got pissed off and asked if it would be better if he just let all the insects escape. This irked the border patrol person who insisted that Bill would have to wait until an expert academic was called to the border from Calgary to vouch that the insects would not harm Canadians.

This caused Bill to have to wait more than three hours for another academic to vouch for the insects and for Bill, who was and is a first class entymologist.

Insult was added to injury when the entylologist from Calgary signed the form presented to her without even examining the insects.

Not the best WELCOME TO CANADA that Bill ever received. I found it as amusing as Bill latterly did.

Ian McKenna
Retired Faculty member

_ _

Our first meeting was on the diocese for convocation where we shared a rare first impression when he sincerely turned to me and chuckled at a joke.

Southern Albertans pride themselves on their ability to cope with our climate… Imagine my glee when President Cade went above the call of duty to pace his heavy breathing in preparation for a True North Polar Bear sip! This man can do it all.

The one word to describe Dr. Bill Cade is: REAL

Bridget A. Pastoor
MLA

_ _

The first time I met Dr. Cade I was impressed with his friendliness and engaging personality. He is personable and makes everyone feel listened to. I have so enjoyed meeting Bill at the Senate meetings and will definitely miss his leadership. I am also impressed with Elsa and her outgoing personality.

They make a wonderful team. P.S.
