The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 5, at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union ballrooms. A total of 116 employees who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service will be honoured, along with 20 retiring employees.

In good hands with O'Keeffe

For many of us, the only interaction we have with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge security force is on the wrong end of a parking violation, when in fact Security and Parking is so much more. For John O'Keeffe, who has seen action in some of the world's most troubled regions, the ability to handle this political landmine comes from experience with the real thing.

"It's too bad that a lot of the good things we do get forgotten when we hand out a parking citation," O'Keeffe, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's new director of Security and Parking, says with a laugh.
"I would like to keep reminding people we are a community-based service, that's my big goal, for us not to be seen as just a parking service."

O'Keeffe comes to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ fresh out of the British military, where he served for 23 years. Stationed at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Suffield the last four years, he retired from active service to seek a permanent home in Canada.

He assumes the role left by Randy Joseph, and while heading up a military police detachment might not seem parallel to running a university security office, O'Keeffe says the two organizations are strikingly similar.

"There are many parts of this job and the university life that are very similar to military life," he explains. "Here, we are in a hierarchical structure with someone at the top who is the boss and there are different organizations below, all with their own responsibilities. The military is very much the same.
"Our deans and professors are in the officer ranks and the others are almost like the soldiers, working in the background making things happen."

A non-commissioned soldier, O'Keeffe joined the military as a 16-year old for what he expected would be a three-year term. It turned into a career that took him to every continent on the planet but Antarctica. His tours included highlight postings in Hong Kong, Kenya and Australia, as well as numerous stops in Europe. He also served on United Nations forces in locales such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo and Northern Ireland, eventually retiring on pre-selection to the position of Regimental Sergeant Major, the highest rank for a non-commissioned soldier.

"I've seen my fair share of good and bad," he says.

Reviewing the campus emergency response plan is a key priority for O'Keeffe, but just learning the unique terminology of the job, as well as introducing himself to the many units on campus has dominated his time.

"I still have to establish myself within the organization and get people to understand how I work," he says. "The biggest thing I've got to do is convince people that I'm not Randy and we have our different workings. We both strive toward the end result but we're going to probably do it different ways."

He admits his interview for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ posting was the first of his life and was not exactly sure how it should be approached. Walking away he felt good, and not just about his performance.

"I remember thinking it would be upsetting if I didn't get the job but more than anything, I'd be really disappointed if I didn't get to work with the people I'd met," he says.

• O'Keeffe's wife Amanda is a paralegal and they own a two-year old German shepherd, Ben.

• He has been commuting to the U of L daily from Medicine Hat.

• O'Keeffe was born in Sheffield, a city and metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire, England. Sheffield gained its reputation for its steel production in the 19th century.

• Stationed at CFB Suffield, O'Keeffe's military police looked over a base considered the largest in the Commonwealth at 2,962 square kilometers.

• O'Keeffe on staying in Canada upon retiring from the military, "If I was to tie it up into one thing it would be the quality of life. I think everybody has opportunity within Canada and that's the biggest plus for me."

Celebrating Success: SOS 2008

In 2005, Supporting Our Students started as an internal, annual campaign to raise money for student awards. Since then, the initiative has grown by leaps and bounds as U of L faculty and staff continue to demonstrate a tangible commitment to students.

The 2008 campaign marked the most successful year to date. Supporting Our Students Co-Chairs Dr. Dayna Daniels and Randy Joseph reflect on the campaign and the people who stepped forward to show support.

Q. As you look back at Supporting Our Students 2008, what stands out?

Dayna: The results really highlight the success of the campaign. We exceeded all of our goals in terms of the numbers of participants and the amount we set out to raise. Surpassing our goal for the number of participants in the campaign was a huge accomplishment – I'm really proud of that. Considering the downturn in the economy, the fact that people were willing to dig deep and come up with money to support our students was really great.

Randy: The campaign sort of drove itself. In the spring, we set out to create awareness about the need for both scholarships and bursaries. People began to recognize that even a small contribution was worthwhile. As a result, we received support from a lot of different groups.

Q. What role did the volunteers play in the 2008 campaign?

Dayna: There were 24 other people we enlisted to help in the campaign – these were individuals who had given to Supporting Our Students and were willing to go one step further.

Randy: I liked to think of our volunteers as our key communicators. They played an important part because they spread out across campus and got the word out to their various areas.

Dayna: They were really enthusiastic about helping, and that made it exciting. Hopefully the momentum of that will keep going.

Q. Can you explain the significance of the Supporting Our Students stickers that have been popping up around campus?

Randy: We talked early in the campaign about how most people didn't want a memento that would cost money, but the idea behind the Supporting Our Students stickers was that they would provide visual recognition, while remaining relatively inexpensive.

Dayna: Our volunteers distributed the stickers to everyone on campus who made a contribution. The visibility of just that little sticker said, "I am a part of this." It also allowed students to identify some of the people who contribute to awards they may have received. As I've walked down the halls of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, I've seen a lot of the stickers around – I think people take pride in letting others know they made a contribution.

Q. What final words do you have as Co-Chairs for Supporting Our Students?

Dayna: I'd like to thank everybody who made a contribution, but particularly the new contributors, returning contributors and the people who increased the amount they gave. Giving back to our students is an important aspect of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, and we're all a part of it.

Randy: Students are our core business; they're the people we need to serve. If we have the ability to donate some money towards their future, that's really a positive thing. I would also like to thank everyone who put some of his or her own finances towards this. Thank you for your commitment.

Dayna: And as a final note, I would challenge whoever replaces us as the 2009 Chairs to go even bigger!

Janes working to help her kids

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus is filled with faculty and staff who go above and beyond the call of duty every day. Charlene Janes is one of those people.
In her role as international liaison officer, she supports more than 550 international students a year. The students she works with come from around the world and know Janes as someone they can turn to, as a mom away from home.
"In a lot of ways I do feel like they're my kids," Janes says with a smile. "Sometimes they just need someone to be there for them, to encourage them, to lend a shoulder to cry on."
Janes' work revolves around finding solutions for the unique challenges these students encounter. She is presented with almost every problem imaginable, one of which is the issue of finances.
"There's a misconception out there that international students have a lot of money. While some of them come from affluence, a lot of them do not. In many cases, an extended family has pooled their money to give one individual an opportunity to go to university," Janes says.
She explains there are times when the necessary financial support for these students becomes unavailable. In such situations, Janes has advised those with high grades to apply for scholarships, but she was frustrated by the lack of funding for students who were not necessarily at the top of the academic ladder.
"What I saw was that these students ended up working a lot of hours to make ends meet, and while they were getting by, they were not really thriving."
At the spring launch of Supporting Our Students 2008, campaign co-chair Randy Joseph spoke about the need for increased bursaries — it was an appeal that hit home for Janes.
"I had seen a need for financial support for international students for a long time. Establishing a bursary turned out to be such an easy thing to do. I contacted the Advancement office, explained what I wanted to do, and they helped me make it happen."
As it turns out, she wasn't the only one who recognized the need — already three other individuals from her department have made contributions to the award.
"Supporting this award has been such a rewarding experience.
These students come here because of the opportunities they believe an education will provide. It feels good to help them get one step closer to reaching their potential."
