Nominations sought for honorary degrees

Nominations are being sought for candidates to receive a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Honorary Degree. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ seeks to honour those individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the life of our society provincially, nationally and internationally in such areas as the professions, business, public life, philanthropy, the arts, humanities and the sciences.

It looks for individuals who will bring honour to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ with their presence, including those persons whose contributions have either touched Alberta directly or have been of genuine importance to the province.

The Post-secondary Learning Act provides that the chancellor, on the authorization of the Senate, may grant an honorary degree on a person.

While the Senate has the authority to select honorary degree recipients, the GFC Honorary Degrees Advisory Committee is soliciting nominations for honorary degrees other than LL.D.

Time to recognize U of L's best teachers

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is looking for your input as it seeks to identify excellence in teaching.

Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Distinguished Teaching Award, a prestigious honour bestowed upon the institution's best and brightest educators. Any member of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community, including students, faculty, staff and alumni may participate in the nomination process. The award is open to all full and part-time members of the academic staff who have taught during some part of the 2009/2010 academic year.

The U of L prides itself on providing its students with a personal learning environment and the Distinguished Teaching Award serves to recognize those educators who most effectively connect with their students.

The deadline for nominations is Feb. 1.

What is community justice in Bolivia?

Imagine a form of justice delivered by your neighbours and the community that surrounds you, independent of governmental authority?

It may sound implausible and antiquated but it is a new reality in Bolivia, where in January, the people of Bolivia approved the text of a new national Constitution, whose provisions included official recognition of "community justice" as a means of resolving conflicts and adjudicating criminal offenses in indigenous communities.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will be hosting Rutgers ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ professor Daniel M. Goldstein Thursday afternoon, 3 p.m. in AH100 as he addresses this topic. Goldstein, a professor in Rutgers' Department of Anthropology, will be presenting "Community Justice and Citizen Security in Bolivia".

For some observers, the inclusion of community justice within national law is a recognition of the "traditional" juridical practices of indigenous Bolivians, and a vital affirmation of indigenous rights by the Bolivian state. For others, community justice represents the dilution of state authority and the incorporation into law of an unenforceable, arbitrary system, a discourse that is used to justify vigilante violence and other human rights violations.

Goldstein will discuss just what is community justice in Bolivia, and what is its relationship to efforts to create security for Bolivian citizens. This presentation explores the conflicts and contradictions that underlie this controversial moment in Latin American political and social life.

The event is co-sponsored by the U of L Anthropology Department with the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) and the President's Office.

Ethnicity focus of event

The interdisciplinary conference on Ethnicity: Theory and Practice in the 21st Century took place at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge September 26-28.

Organized by Maria Ng, Department of English, and Michelle Helstein, Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, paper proposals at the conference came from countries as far away as Nigeria and Australia.

Ethnicity proved to be an important topic, based on the wide response, as participants in the conference included scholars from Slovenia, India and throughout Canada.

Nasrin Rahimieh, professor of Comparative Literature and the Maseeh Chair and director of Dr. Samuel M. Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, Irvine was the keynote speaker as she presented The Question of Ethnicity in Modern Iranian Cultural History.

Panels at the conference included, Indigenous Cultures – Global Values, Ethnicity in Canada/North America and Gender and Ethnicity. Individual papers ranged from discussion of teaching modern Jewish literature to the ways Latina/o stereotypes are constructed in Hollywood comedies.

The sessions were all extremely well attended, energized by enthusiastic question periods following all 20 presented papers.

The conference was funded by the President's Office's Women Scholars Speaker Series, the Faculty of Arts & Science, Faculty of Education, the School of Health Sciences, the Departments of English, History, Kinesiology and Physical Education, and was ably assisted by Briana Struss and Brittany Thompson.
