From passionate songwriters to dedicated educators and more, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA) is pleased to induct six new members into the Alumni Honour Society.

“Our six inductees this year represent a wide range of skills but they are united in that they are all passionate about their roles and have all made an immeasurable difference in their communities,” says Matthew McHugh, Chair of the ULAA Recognition Committee. “We’re proud of their accomplishments and how they have built off their U of L educations and given back to their communities in such substantial ways.”

Introduced in honour of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s 35th Anniversary in 2002, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association established the Alumni Honour Society to recognize the achievements of a select group of alumni each year. The individuals honoured serve as role models through success in their vocation, outstanding community service or superior accomplishment in their avocation.

Like those before them, the 2018 inductees are outstanding examples of U of L alumni. Each of the individuals used the knowledge they gained at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to achieve their personal and professional goals, and through these achievements has left a lasting impact on the people, organizations and communities with which they are involved.

The group will be inducted into the Alumni Honour Society and celebrated at Let There Be Light Night, on Friday, October 12, 2018.

2018 Alumni Honour Society Inductees

Trevor Clark |BMgt ’99

Trevor Clark has built a career helping others by providing compassionate leadership in emergency situations. After graduating from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Management in International Management, he went on to complete his Master of Arts in International Conflict Analysis. He now works for the United Nations leading humanitarian and development responses in some of the most fragile countries on the planet. He is well-respected as an exceptional program manager with the ability to bring teams together to provide sound resolutions for both individuals and the organizations they serve.

Dinah Davis | BSc ’02

Bringing education, passion and enthusiasm to all she does, Dinah Davis is recognized as a leader in the field of Information Technology. After graduating from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, she continued her education by completing a Master of Mathematics Degree in Cryptography, the practice of secure digital communication. She is currently the Vice-President of Research and Development at Arctic Wolf Networks, a cybersecurity start-up. In addition to her professional responsibilities, she is a passionate advocate for young women in technology-related fields and founded codelikeagirl.io to actively empower women to become leaders in the industry. Davis is an inspirational mentor, an exceptional role model to women worldwide, and a strong advocate for gender equality.

John Wort Hannam | BA/BEd ’96

Recognized internationally for his melodies and moving lyrics, John Wort Hannam is an award-winning singer/songwriter based in Lethbridge. His music is deeply rooted in the people, images and landscapes of southern Alberta. Frequently called upon to perform at community events and fundraisers, he lends his talent and support to various charitable and social causes. In 2017, his song Let It Shine On was commissioned to celebrate the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s 50th anniversary.

Kristina Larkin | BA/BEd ’12

Kristina Larkin is passionate about education and community involvement. She is an active volunteer and community organizer, and currently supports over 400 immigrant and refugee children and youth through her role as Manager of Youth Settlement Services at Lethbridge Family Services. Larkin is committed to using her education to affect change in her community and has been involved with many organizations, including the Westminster Neighbourhood Association, the Rotary Club of Lethbridge Urban Spirits, Womanspace Resource Centre, and the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group. Larkin is recognized as a role model with the ability to empower individuals through community education, igniting a spark for social justice unlike any other.

Dale Ptycia | BASc (BA) ’85

Dale Ptycia was the first of his family to pursue post-secondary education and credits his time at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge as the foundation to his success in the business of sport. Centering around his deep love for hockey, Dale began his career with Hockey Canada as a coach and instructor. Over his 30 years with the organization, he has excelled and evolved from Program Manager to the Senior Manager of Licensing and Merchandising. Ptycia maintains a strong commitment to giving back to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ that enabled him to align his career with his passion.

Shanda Webber (née Venier) | BA ’05

Shanda Webber (née Venier) has become a role model in the Indigenous community for both her research and volunteer work. As a student, she was an advocate for increasing access and enhancing resources to assist First Nations, Métis and Inuit students build connections, encouraging success among her peers. Professionally, her work focuses on assisting prospective students transition to the post-secondary environment as well as, developing and enhancing academic and cultural support services for Indigenous learners. She is currently the Manager of Recruitment and Indigenous Services at Lethbridge College.

One of the first opportunities I had to communicate to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community came in the fall of 2001 when I penned the first ever Billboard in a brand new ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ publication, the Legend. As I prepare to leave my position as President of the U of L, I am pleased to have the opportunity to write one final Billboard, a fitting bookend to my time here at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

There have been a lot of 'lasts' taking place over the past month and one of the more significant occasions was participating in my final convocation ceremony. I have found always that convocation is an excellent reaffirmation of what we do, day-in and day-out, here at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Each ceremony is unique and one highlight this spring was seeing our first graduate of Ceremony 2 receive her degree. Alix Blackshaw was a very involved student on campus and worked diligently with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Rotaract Club. She, along with Kristina Larkin and Eva Gorny, were recently profiled in the Lethbridge Herald and embody the ideals we embrace here at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. It is very satisfying to see our students take their role in life seriously, that they don't concentrate just on their books but they take what they've learned in the classroom and share their lessons outside with those less fortunate.

As many of you know, I do not wear hats, and especially convocation hats. For the past 10 years I had avoided wearing my official convocation hat during ceremonies, but Chancellor Richard Davidson made a point of noting that I was not "appropriately" attired during the final ceremony – I ultimately relented.

I want to thank George McIntosh in Facilities for mentioning that I had never had the opportunity to touch the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Mace. I was surprised and pleased to have Chief Marshal John Poulsen hand it to me as Elsa and I walked out in our final procession.

I also want to thank the Senate for bestowing upon Elsa the Senate Volunteer Award. Her contributions to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ over the last 10 years have been invaluable, and I could not have done any of this had it not been for her love and support.

Another significant event was the annual Paul Lewis Lunch. This is one of my favourite gatherings as it brings retirees back to campus and really drives home the community spirit we've fostered here at the U of L. This year we were thrilled to showcase Markin Hall to many of our former employees.

The official opening of Markin Hall this fall is one I'm looking forward to attending. While the date has not been finalized, if it can be co-ordinated before our trip to Mozambique in October, I will not let it open without me.

The many farewell wishes both Elsa and I have received have been fantastic. The goodbye events have been very warm, very gratifying, embarrassing, awkward at times, but more than anything, a lot of fun.

It has been a wonderful ride – I've said that many times and I'll go on saying that. I can't imagine a more satisfying time in my life in terms of the people, the things we worked on, and the recognition the U of L has received.

Wherever our travels and careers take us in the future, we will always be Pronghorns and members of the U of L community.

Rotaract Club gears up for dinner and auction

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Rotaract Club will be holding its Fifth Annual Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Lethbridge Lodge.

This popular event has raised more than $85,000 for international charitable organizations over the past five years.

The proceeds from this year's Dr. Seuss themed event, Scholarships, Schools & Salamagoox, will go towards Malawi Girls on the Move and Roots & Wings International.

Malawi Girls on the Move is a Malawian/Canadian organization dedicated to helping young Malawian women achieve self-sufficiency through education.

Roots & Wings International, based in rural Guatemala, creates educational opportunities to promote development as defined by local communities.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Rotaract Club hopes to provide these organizations with funding to promote educational opportunities and school construction, and has set a goal of approximately $10,000 for this event.

"Rotary District 5360, comprised of communities in southern Alberta including Lethbridge, has recently had the pleasure of hosting Malawi Girls on the Move directors Christie Johnson and Memory Mdyetseni," says Rotaract vice-president, external Kristina Larkin.

"The U of L Rotaract Club is excited to continue the district's support of this very worthy group. A representative of Malawi Girls on the Move is also expected to attend the event."

Larkin added that the Rotaract group is eager to provide support for Roots & Wings International, after Rotaract vice-president finance and current U of L student Marie Robertson spent a semester in Guatemala.

"She was able to see the impact of education among rural Guatemalans," Larkin said. "Her experience encouraged us continue to value our own educational opportunities and to work at providing the same chances for others worldwide."

Tickets are $50 each or $350 for a table of eight. Dress is business or semi-formal. Students may purchase a ticket for $40. Silent auction items and monetary donations are also appreciated. Contact rotaract@uleth.ca for tickets or additional information.
