And, once in a while, these students take an opportunity to pay it forward to others who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence.</p><p>One such opportunity was taken by Faculty of Management alumni Kelly Kennedy (BMgt &#39;08), Lee Spracklin (BMgt &#39;08) and Christine Odney (BMgt &#39;08). The three former members of the JDC West business competition team were looking for a way to make use of surplus team funds and came up with the idea to support current students, all the while honouring the contribution of an outstanding professor.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/KazakoffKennedy-main.jpg" title="Alumnus Kelly Kennedy is one of the former students behind the establishment of a new Faculty of Management scholarship program. He is also known for his involvement with the Small Business Institute and, most notably, his work with students in the Integrated Management Experience class. He is both proud and humbled by the establishment of an award in his name.</p><p>&ldquo;I was very surprised, honoured and touched to hear about the award,&rdquo; says Kazakoff. &ldquo; To me it was the greatest honour I could ever achieve. I have&nbsp;gained so much from the students I&rsquo;ve interacted with and am constantly astonished at the creativity and work ethic so many have.&nbsp; I have also come to realize that if you provide a high performance culture for students they can achieve so much.&nbsp; Seeing how many students grow in their personal and professional development makes me very happy and proud of what we do in the Faculty of Management.&rdquo;</p><p>With characteristic humour, Kazakoff adds, &ldquo;I was also very happy the award did not have &lsquo;memorial&rsquo; in the title.&rdquo;</p><p>Kennedy says the project began simply, with he and his friends trying to find a way to honour a professor and mentor who had greatly impacted their U of L experience.</p><p>&ldquo;The ball got rolling when I sent a message to my friends Lee, Christine and a few others asking if they would like to work on this concept as a team. Dan gave so much of his time and energy to his students that we thought we needed to give back to him and the Faculty of Management in some way.&rdquo;</p><p>Odney and Spracklin got on board quickly to help make the idea a reality.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:450px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/Kazakoff.jpg" title="Dan Kazakoff is well known on campus for the inspiration forward,&quot; says Odney. &quot;JDC West is about striving for our best and contributing to community and that&rsquo;s what we wanted the extra funds to accomplish.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;The financial burden of getting an education is a struggle for many students,&rdquo; adds Spracklin. &ldquo; This award will hopefully encourage students to go beyond the minimum course requirements to make a difference for themselves, their school and their community.&rdquo;</p><p>Kelly, Odney and Spracklin credit a number of people on campus with helping to push the award through the administrative approval process, including Chris Horbachewski (VP Advancement), Murray Lindsay (former Dean of Management), Kathy MacFarlane (Manager, Development Programs) and Anita Ryder (Management Financial Analyst).</p><p>&ldquo;Support for the award on campus was incredibly strong,&rdquo; says Kennedy.</p><p>Kazakoff says it is inspiring to see his former students recognize the value of the education they received while at the U of L, and to take that knowledge and apply it to help the next generation.</p><p>&ldquo;My best &lsquo;gift&rsquo; would be that no matter what they do in their lives, they will always be part of a community and maybe through their activities with me, they realize how their efforts can make a positive difference in whatever community they choose to be a part of,&quot; he says. &quot;I hope deserving students will be honoured to receive this award and they will aspire to be change agents in whatever they do.&rdquo;</p><p>The $1,500 award is disbursed annually to a full-time bachelor of management student with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and a demonstrated record of service.</p><p><strong>Read Looking back on your five years as dean of the <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/management" rel="nofollow">Faculty of Management</a>, what gives you the greatest sense of satisfaction?</strong></p> <p>&bull; The unanimous approval of the Faculty's ambitious vision, including seeking AACSB (<a href="http://www.aacsb.edu/" rel="nofollow">Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business</a>) accreditation. If we implement it, we will have an exceptional, differentiated program that will compete very well against other programs.</p> <p>&bull; The funding and design of Markin Hall was a real team effort involving everyone from 7th floor administration to the Faculty's terrific administrative staff. I am very proud of the building's space and how it will allow students and faculty to mingle as a way of building community.</p> <p>&bull; We have hired some really talented young faculty that are doing great in the classroom and will make their mark in research.</p> <p>&bull; I think we have made great strides in connecting with the business and wider Lethbridge communities.</p> <p>&bull; We are increasing the visibility of our northern campuses. In particular, enrolments in Calgary have soared.</p> <p>&bull; There has been a phenomenal transformation in the <a href="http://fusion.uleth.ca/man/students/mss.shtml" rel="nofollow">Management Student Society</a>. They have come a long way in the types of functions they are doing, how they go about doing their business and the student activities they organize or participate in, such as JDC. Their work in developing a professional student honour code that, among other things, encourages student volunteer work is wonderful.</p> <p><strong>2. What did you enjoy most about working in an administrative role?</strong></p> <p>Seeing the opportunities and making them come alive as part of a strategy, and then working with faculty to have those opportunities become a reality.<br> The people I work closely with have been an absolute delight, and I couldn't have accomplished a single thing without them. They are so talented and committed to the U of L.</p> <p><strong>3. What will you take away personally from your time as dean?</strong></p> <p>How demanding university administration is, the enormous time commitment it requires and how difficult it is to make some of the decisions. It is not an easy job.</p> <p>I think I've grown a lot and developed new skills. I more thoroughly appreciate that running a good organization is about understanding and getting the basics right. As well, I realize it is trite to say this, but it is all about people. I was lucky because I had so many great people to work with.</p> <p><strong>4. Are you satisfied with where the Faculty of Management is positioned as it moves into Markin Hall and begins a new chapter?</strong></p> <p>I feel the Faculty of Management possesses a well-thought-out strategy for the<br> future. Administratively we have the financial information to make good decisions, and many of the policies for things to run effectively and efficiently are in place. I also think we have done well financially. We saw our current financial problems coming a long time ago and, in response, have been both fiscally prudent and responsible. In this connection Anita Ryder, the Faculty's financial officer, has played such an important role and deserves much of the credit.</p> <p><strong>5. Are you looking forward to getting back into teaching and research?</strong></p> <p>The part about administration that I dislike the most is not being able to interact with students on a regular basis. There is no question that I have missed teaching, and I've also really missed being actively involved in research. I've had to basically put on hold most projects, other than those that were quite far advanced and even here, I couldn't have gotten them published if it were not for my co-authors. Still, I don't think I want to leave administration completely and one of my objectives for my upcoming administrative leave is to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/calgary" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Calgary</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/markin-hall" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Markin Hall</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/faculty-management" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Faculty of Management</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/management-student-society" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Management Student Society</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/murray-lindsay" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Murray Lindsay</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/anita-ryder" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Anita Ryder</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/dean" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">dean</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/financial-officer" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">financial officer</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Dr. Murray Lindsay reflects on tenure" class="rdf-meta"></span> Wed, 16 Jun 2010 20:04:46 +0000 trevor.kenney 4431 at /unews
