Horns ticket packages unveiled

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorn Athletics has rolled out its season ticket packages for the 2010-2011 Canada West sports season and is offering special early bird pricing before July 31.

Those who purchase Horns season tickets prior to July 31 will be entitled to packages priced at last season's rates. As well, ticket buyers will be entered in a draw for four rounds of golf at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort.

Season ticket packages are available for basketball, soccer and hockey and can be purchased through the Athletics Office (403-332-4676).

'94 Hockey Horns reminisce with Babcock

Mark Wobick (BSc'96) works in the financial sector and is a hockey coach to his novice-aged son; Trevor Ellerman (BMgt '94) is the head professional at a golf course; Mike Babcock just coached the Canadian Men's Olympic Hockey Team to a gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics. What all three have in common is 1994, the year they were all ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns and winners of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (then CIAU) men's national hockey title.

"When you win together, you walk together, forever," says Babcock, as much a Horn now as he was in 1994, despite the fame and fortune he's since experienced.

The majority of the group was back together at the sold-out 1st Annual Calgary and Friends Alumni Dinner in Calgary this past spring, with Babcock as the keynote speaker. The bond they established 16 years ago is still evident.

"I've seen probably four or five guys who I hadn't seen in 13 or 14 years, and it's like I just saw them yesterday," says Ellerman, the head pro at the Riverview Golf Club in Redcliff, Alta.
"Looking back, that closeness we had, that was the whole key to our success."

Wobick, who works with Meyers Norris Penny in Lethbridge, says the players reached a point where they completely trusted one another.

"I don't think I ever experienced a team that had that type of a bond. You just lived and breathed for everybody and Mike made us believe," says Wobick.

For Wobick, that has translated into lasting relationships with his teammates and successes that trace back to that championship season.

"As you get older you better understand what you accomplished," says Ellerman. "At the time, you won and you think it'll last forever and you don't really grasp the concept. I think if you look at our team, the successful careers the players forged for themselves away from hockey, the foundation was laid there in 1993/1994. Winning builds success, friendships and bonds, and this was a special group."

Entry deadline nears for Gill Memorial Golf Tournament

The registration deadline for the annual John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament is fast approaching.

The annual best-ball scramble event, to be held June 11, 2010 at the Picture Butte Golf Club, raises funds for student bursaries. Registration deadline for the tournament is Friday, May 28.

A wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day of golf while also raising funds for bursaries that assist students in financial need, the John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament honours the memory of alumnus John Gill (BA '94). Golf training lessons

Sport and Recreation Services is offering golfers the opportunity to get their swings in shape as the new golf season beckons.

For a fee of $55 per person, players can get instruction from Canadian Professional Golfers Association (CPGA) professional Chris de Bruin, as well as fitness instruction from a certified fitness trainer. A total of four sessions are included in the package, with the first session on Tuesday, Apr. 6 and subsequent sessions running each Tuesday through Apr. 27. Each two-hour session begins at 6 p.m. at Orion Sports & Training Centre.

A maximum of eight golfers will be accepted per class.

Portion size, activity keys to weight loss

Weight loss is complex, but two key factors for successful weight loss strategies are correct portion size and physical activity.

Food portions have increased considerably over the past 30 years. Couple a portion size increase with a decrease in activity levels and it's no wonder Canadians are struggling to achieve a healthy weight.

Examples of proper-sized food portions can be found on Canada's Food Guide for Healthy Eating. For instance, one serving of cooked pasta is just 125 ml – a lot smaller than most people think. Try measuring your food portions for a day and comparing this to the serving sizes on the food guide and you'll get a clear picture of your personal nutrition plan and how many servings per day you're eating from each food group. If you're within the recommended number of servings per day then you're on track for a healthy weight. Unbalanced food groups usually lead to health or weight management problems.

Ways to 'eyeball' food portions

• 5 ml of oil is about the size of a stamp or a quarter

• One serving of fruit is about the size of a tennis ball (larger fruits usually equal two servings)

• 125 ml of pasta, fruit or vegetables is about the same size as a hockey puck

• 30 ml of peanut butter is about the size of a golf ball

Deadline nears for Gill memorial golf event

The registration deadline for the John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament is fast approaching.

The annual Gill Memorial event is set for Friday, June 12 but registration for the tourney closes Friday, May 29. This tournament is open to everyone and golfers of all levels. Proceeds of the tournament support bursaries for students in financial need.

John Gill (BA '94) was the driving force behind the original "Birdies for Bursaries" golf tournament, which raised thousands of dollars for
U of L student bursaries. The tournament was renamed the John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament in honour of his passing in November, 2007.

Gill was a good friend of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, the Alumni Association and the community. He worked as a lawyer and respected Crown Prosecutor in Lethbridge in addition to raising an active family and serving as the U of L Alumni Association President and volunteering as member of the Board of Governors and Senate.

The tourney is slated for the Picture Butte Golf Course and features a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Both corporate or hole sponsorship is available.

The early bird deadline to register for the John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament is fast approaching.

Golfers have until May 1 to meet the early bird deadline and register for the John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament, an event that supports bursaries for students in financial need. Open to everyone and golfers of all levels, the tournament is Friday, June 12 at the Picture Butte Golf Club. Registration fees are $150 per person with corporate or hole sponsorship available.

Women's fastball program looking for return to action

Women's fastball is alive at the collegiate level. The next goal is to make it well.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has had an on-again off-again relationship with women's fastball and Bill Halma would like to see a strong return next fall. In order to do so, he needs the word out now that the program is ready to roll.

"We've got about eight to 10 ladies very interested in playing but we need 14 to 16, of which we probably need at least two to three solid pitchers. That's been a real problem for us in the past," says Halma, manager, programs for Sport and Recreation Services, adding that the program is also searching for a coach.

Women's fastball falls under the "semi-competitive" sport tag, along with U of L club sports like golf and curling. These are all self-funded activities that participate in leagues outside the auspices of official Canada West competition.

They have a following however and just because they have no official status now, that can always change – just see the history of women's rugby.

The U of L has fielded a women's fastball team for four of the last six seasons but after two years away from competition, Halma would like to see it restored this fall.

"Nobody comes here specifically to play women's fastball but if we were to have a strong program, maybe it's just another one of those activities available on campus that may help sway someone's decision to enroll here," he says. "We're always looking to provide our students with as many outlets as possible and this is one I think could be very popular."

Playing in the Alberta Intercollegiate Women's Fastball Association, the U of L would challenge a mix of university and college squads (allowing the U of L to also include Lethbridge College players). Beginning a schedule in early September and wrapping up around Thanksgiving, teams try to play three to five games in a weekend set. The challenge, of course, is finding field availability and compressing a schedule into a tight timeframe.

"We have a bit of a challenge here in Lethbridge because there is no formal fastball league anymore," Halma says. "Unfortunately, then we're only gaining players from outside the city of Lethbridge."

He currently has a core group of six to eight players regularly working out at an indoor facility in preparation for next fall. Anyone interested in joining the program can contact Halma at 403-329-5107 or via e-mail at halma@uleth.ca

Region's elite level athletes are in good Stead

Shawn Stead knows a good athlete when he sees one. If things go as planned, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will get used to seeing them more and more on campus in the near future.

Stead (BA '04) is the U of L's new High Performance Manager, Strength and Conditioning, meaning he works with the area's best young talents in the hopes of training the next generation of national and Olympic-level athletes. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will be the hub of that training program.

"The long term goal is to identify and develop young athletes from a number of sporting bodies within Alberta," Stead says. "If they are in this region, bring them in here and train them, providing them with the services they will need to have success."

A Creston, B.C. native, Stead has essentially been a Lethbridge resident for eight-plus years. He finished his kinesiology degree at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in 2004, all the while working with the Pronghorns men's and women's soccer programs.

"We had a lot of success as far as reducing injuries and then on-field success as far as teams making playoffs that hadn't made it before, and I believe that was part of it," he says.

Following graduation, Stead enjoyed an internship with the United States Ski Association in Park City, Utah. Over the course of his nine-month assignment he was given access to the association's world-class training centre.

"You got the all-encompassing view of what an athlete needs to have success and the support staff of these national and Olympic programs," Stead says. "Getting the chance to work and test athletes at the Olympic level was an eye opener, a really good experience."

Upon his return to Canada, he partnered with a colleague in establishing a private sport training company, Crash Conditioning, which focuses on developing the area's elite hockey players. His clients include the Western Hockey League's Lethbridge Hurricanes; including individual players such as two-time World Junior gold medalist Zach Boychuk, as well as the midget AAA Y's Men Titans, the city's top level minor hockey team.

Stead's techniques focus on building well-rounded athletes from early on in their development.

"We teach mobility and movement mechanics," he says. "Essentially it's strength in movement, if you are strong in the movements that relate to your sport, you're probably going to be a pretty proficient athlete.

"If you can get athletes when they're young, that's the ideal situation. You want to provide them with a foundation that they can develop, over time, all the characteristics of an elite athlete. That begins with mobility work and flexibility work and then as they age you can start to incorporate more strength work and other modalities."

The program is in its infancy, Stead having just opened his office in May of last year. As it develops, he sees the U of L becoming a centre for athletic excellence and whether that translates into more prominent young athletes becoming a part of Pronghorn Athletics remains to be seen. Either way, it raises the profile of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and Sport and Recreation Services in Lethbridge and southern Alberta.

"The sky's the limit and this facility has a lot of potential," Stead says. "We're slowly moving in a positive direction. It's taken some time but it's there and when we get over the hump, it'll be really good."
