Incoming executive excited about opportunity to boost student engagement

The spring winds bring an annual changing of the guard at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union (ULSU). As another successful year at the Students' Union comes to an end, a new Executive Council is poised to usher in new, and what it expects will be prosperous, student initiatives.

"All of the initiatives and projects we will be working on will fall under at least one of six headings: increasing the effectiveness of our communications, increasing our presence on campus, strengthening our lobbying voice, improving our events, expanding our service base and promoting sustainability on campus," says newly appointed ULSU President Zack Moline.

Executive Council has taken a particular interest in boosting the organization's digital presence and online services. Numerous initiatives are taking shape that will make the Students' Union available on more media platforms and subsequently to a larger audience.

One particular undertaking is part of two Executive Council members' campaign platforms. Andrew Williams and Leyland Bradley are guiding a venture that would see the creation of an online tutor database.

"Students are currently forced to refer to cluttered posting boards, giving them only a small chance of actually finding the academic assistance they require," says Andrew Williams, ULSU vice-president academic. "I see this as simply unacceptable."

ULSU Executive Council also plans to utilize new avenues of communication to diversify and improve on-campus events.

"Students have such great and unique ideas. I want their input," says Lisa Rodych, the vice-president of Internal Affairs.

This year's council is also excited about the opportunity to advocate for ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students' interests. As members of both the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) and the Council of Alberta ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Students (CAUS), Moline and his colleagues intend to make major strides in improving the post-secondary experience at not only the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, but for students as a whole in Alberta and across Canada.

"Every year, every new council puts student engagement at the top of their list of priorities for their year in office, and I feel that our council will exemplify this," says Leyland Bradley, vice-president Operations and Finance. "We want to ensure that our campus events and our advocacy efforts are parallel with the opinions of our students."

Students' Union contributes to greater community

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union Executive Council enhanced its painting skills last month, all the while working on team building, learning a bit about each other and even themselves – through volunteering for Project Paintbrush.

Working with Volunteer Lethbridge and Project Paintbrush, the ULSU Executive Council laboured to fix up homes for those who are not able. Specifically, the four council members grabbed brushes and aided in painting the exterior of a local home.

"Lethbridge supports its students and it is important for students to support Lethbridge too," says Taz Kassam, ULSU president. "Making positive changes through volunteering in the community provides for greater experiences and opportunities for all."

The dedicated group looks to shed some much-needed light on the great work these two organizations undertake.

"By taking part in this project, we hope to not only spark knowledge of Project Paintbrush and Volunteer Lethbridge, but also showcase the impact volunteering has on individuals and the community," says Kassam.

Project Paintbrush focuses on assisting seniors and individuals with special needs who are physically and/or financially unable to maintain the exterior of their property. There is no cost to the homeowner and the program operation is based solely on volunteers.

Kassam wants to encourage youth to engage philanthropic pursuits that unquestionably impact so many people.

"Seeing the faces of those who you've helped is one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had," says Kassam. "At the end of the day, we can look back and realize that we made a difference, and the families are more than grateful for the help from Volunteer Lethbridge and Project Paintbrush."

The project also benefited the SU team.

"It was not only a lot of fun and helped out a family in need, but it was a great way to strengthen our relationship with one another," says Kassam.

The ULSU Executive Council extends its thanks to all those who have been involved throughout the summer on these volunteer projects.

ULSU elections in the books

The battle for ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union president may have been a one-horse race but it didn't stop voters from casting ballots in the 2009-2010 ULSU executive council and general assembly election last week.

Over 21 per cent of students cast their votes in the election as a variety of roles were filled. Jeremy Girard ran unopposed as ULSU president and will take over office in May. He's excited about the upcoming challenge.

"I'm proud to serve as president in the upcoming year," says Girard. "The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has a lot to offer to the community, and the Students' Union has a lot to offer to students."

Girard takes over from outgoing ULSU President, Adam Vossepoel.

"I'm confident the incoming executive team will lead the ULSU down the right path," says Vossepoel. "The organization and the interests of students are in very capable hands, and I leave my presidency with no apprehension about the future of the ULSU."

The newly‐elected council members assume their roles May 1, 2009 and remain in office through to Apr. 30, 2010.
