Rez Wars promotes engagement

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Organization of Residence Students (ORS) and Students' Union have teamed up again this year to engage in a little friendly competition, all while cleaning up the coulees.

Rez Wars is a competition amongst residence students that stimulates a good-hearted match and engages students in social activities.

The Sunday, Sept. 26 event begins at 2 p.m. at the U of L Breezeway in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall. Participants are given 45 minutes to go into the coulees and pick up as much debris as possible.

Debris collected is then divided into recycling and waste, with the winning team determined by volume collected.

"It is really important for students, especially those in their first year of university, to engage in these types of activities," says Taz Kassam, ULSU President. "It promotes a fun environment and aids in further on-campus student engagement."

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union supports ORS in an attempt to clean up the community, not just for students, but also for everyone.

"This group works so hard throughout the year at ensuring our students are involved in the community, and this is a clear reflection of the impact a group of people can have while still having fun," adds Kassam.

The ORS is the biggest student club on campus, with 587 on-campus residents. Statistics show that students in residence are 18.4 per cent more likely to graduate university than students who haven't lived in residence.

"This is our way to give back to the community. We take a lot of pride in living here in Lethbridge and this is our way to show it," says Shane Townsend, a residence assistant and one of the event organizers. "We hope to have 250 people out dressed up in their floor colours cleaning up the coulees."

Underwear Affair is charitable

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Organization of Residence Students (ORS) is stripping down to their skivvies and running around campus for charity this weekend.

ORS is hosting the Underwear Affair 2K charity run, a two-kilometre run around campus, Saturday, Mar. 13. All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

"This is a way that students can have another amazing memory of doing something a little crazy, while doing it for a good cause," says John Louis Fahie, organizer of the event. "The reason I decided to do this is because cancer has touched many family members and friends of mine, as I am sure it has touched others."

Those who wish to participate will be asked to raise money through sponsorship, in addition to their $5 registration fee.

"Cancer is a very predominant ailment in our lives, and I believe if researchers can find the funding, they will be able to find a cure," says Fahie. "Raising money should not be something that is tough to do, it should be fun and the memory should last a lifetime. "This is my goal here, to make a fun, crazy memory while raising money for a much needed cause."

The run will begin at noon in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Bus Loop, in front of the Students' Union Building. Participants will run the two kilometre specified route and end up at Patterson Centre where they will enjoy a barbecue and refreshments.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students are putting a new spin on war, using it to build positive relationships with the Lethbridge community.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Organization of Residence students, in conjunction with the Students' Union (ULSU) are engaging to help the community by cleaning up the coulees, all in the context of a friendly war – Rez Wars.

"Cleaning the coulees for the betterment of the entire city of Lethbridge, which is something the westside community can take pride in, shows the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's neighbours the students here care about the community's well-being," says Jeremy Girard, Students' Union president.

Rez Wars is a competition among residence students that incorporates a good-hearted challenge while also engaging students in social activities.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. Participants will be given 45 minutes to go into the coulees, starting at the U of L Breezeway, and pick up as much debris as possible. Debris collected by the participants will be divided into recycling and waste. The winning team will be determined by who collects the most debris.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union supports the Organization of Residence Students in an attempt to clean up the community, not just for students but also for everyone.

"These students are not merely competing in a residence competition, they are showing that ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ students are environmental stewards and can lead by example," adds Girard. "These are the types of events the ULSU can throw its entire weight behind."
