Taking science to the community

With team training completed, the group is busy showcasing its projects and activities to a group of teachers, before rolling the program out to area schools in November.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduate and undergraduate students are taking their passion for science to local and regional classrooms in November.

Let's Talk Science is a national initiative that brings scientific concepts and research to young people in a fun and engaging way. The U of L team, with a core group of more than 20 students, is run by volunteers from various departments throughout the institution who are taking time out of their schedules to spread the word about science. Faculty members Ute Kothe (Chemistry and Biochemistry), Kenneth Vos (Physics and Astronomy), Helena Danyk (Biological Sciences) and Jackie Rice (Mathematics and Computer Science) are all on board.

"This program will enhance the science experience of high school students and provides graduate students with the opportunity to strengthen their skills in science communication," says Evelina De Laurentiis, a PhD candidate in biochemistry and the team co-ordinator. "This not only helps us learn how to explain our own research, but also builds connections between the U of L and area schools."

Chinook Symposium winners announced

Craig Wheaton won the first-ever Loren Hepler Gold Medal for PhD research excellence as the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry held the 3rd Annual Chinook Symposium for Chemistry and Biochemistry in early October.

The symposium and associated poster prize is held to recognize undergraduate and graduate students performing original research in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The Chinook Poster Prizes have been established at the undergraduate and master's levels, but new this year was the addition of the Loren Hepler Gold Medal for PhD research excellence. Two people gave presentations about their PhD research, with Wheaton winning the gold medal and Jeffrey Fischer placing second.

Judges for the annual contest included: Dr. Peter Dibble, Gary Knox and Jared Nieboer (Richardson Nutrition) for the Chemistry prize; Dr. Steven Mosimann, Dr. James Thomas and Sandor Dudas (ADRI) for the Biochemistry prize; Dr. Rene Boere and Dr. Brent Selinger for the PhD prize.
