The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge honoured faculty and postdoctoral fellows across campus who received academic research awards of distinction, secured research funding or published their research findings in the last year at Thursday's Celebrating Research Reception in Markin Hall.

The U of L also recognized those who had books published within the last calendar year.

Mitacs Globalink students on campus

They're recognized as being some of the sharpest minds in the world. Now, 46 top undergraduate students from India have come to Alberta to apply their skills to complex research projects and interact with industry.

Four of those elite students are being hosted by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in the Mathematics and Computer Science and Chemistry and Biochemistry departments.

It's all part of a new program called Mitacs Globalink, which was launched to attract international undergraduate students to the province and promote the benefits of a Canadian education to those pursuing graduate degrees.

"Every year, tens of thousands of future entrepreneurs and scientists from India travel abroad to countries like the U.S. or U.K. for graduate studies," says Arvind Gupta, Scientific Director of Mitacs, a leading national research organization that creates innovation research and training programs for up-and-coming researchers.

"Our message to international students is that Canada has world-class universities that provide superior education and innovative collaborative research opportunities. We also have some great companies interested in working with these students to help commercialize their ideas into the new products of tomorrow."

Mitacs has launched this one-of-a-kind program in the province with the support of the Government of Alberta, which has provided $375,000 towards the program.

"During my stay in Alberta, I have been able to interact with Canadian graduate and undergraduate students which has been very enlightening and informative," says Anupam Srivastava, a student from the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad who is at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge this summer.

"I would surely recommend the Globalink program to my friends back in India."

The Hon. Greg Weadick, Minister of Alberta Advanced Education and Technology and MLA, Lethbridge West says that programs such as Globalink help position Alberta as a world-leading research and innovation destination.

"We are thrilled to host these young international leaders in Alberta," says Weadick. "Bringing smart people into our Campus Alberta system is essential to building Alberta's knowledge-based economy, and we want these students to come back to Alberta for future studies, and to implement their skills and knowledge here."

At the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, the students have jumped right in to their various projects.

"We have been very pleased to host our Globalink students, and are learning from them as much as they are learning from us," says Dr. Jackie Rice, a mathematics and computer science researcher who is working with a student on a project which uses genetic algorithms to try and reduce the size of reversible logic circuits.

Her colleagues Dr. Yllias Chali and Dr. Shahadat Hossain are also supervising students, while another student is working with chemistry and biochemistry researcher Dr. Ute Kothe.

"We hope they will return home with new friends and contacts, and a different perspective on how their future education could include Canada and the U of L," says Rice.

The Globalink program was piloted in 2009 when 17 Indian students spent three months at British Columbia universities.

This year, Mitacs has placed top students from India in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador, and expanded Globalink programming to students from China and Brazil for the first time.

The Globalink program also goes beyond the classroom, Gupta explains, by providing "a big picture taste for life in Canada.

"As part of the internship, for example, the students spend time working alongside their Canadian counterparts to understand Canadian culture and how easy it is for them to fit in, he says. "Our goal is to have these students interact with Alberta students and form new friendships that will extend well beyond their three months in the province."

"In order to be an international innovation leader, Canada must become an attractor for global talent, ensuring that we can compete effectively with other leading jurisdictions," says Gupta. "Building these types of linkages to India is a key part of that strategy."

Iwaniuk and his unique bird brain collection is central to flight study

High-powered, three-dimensional X-ray scanning equipment at a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Scotland is being used with a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researcher's large collection of bird brain specimens to help chart the evolution of flight in birds.

U of L neuroscientist, Dr. Andrew Iwaniuk, who has amassed the world's largest collection of bird brain sections, is partnering with researchers at the National Museums Scotland and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Abertay Dundee to digitally reconstruct the size of bird brains using ancient fossils and modern bird skulls.

"The majority of my research addresses how the brain evolves, particularly with respect to behaviour," says Iwaniuk. "For example, my NSERC funded research aims to determine how the evolution of novel courtship behaviours in birds is associated with changes in the brain. This research is critical to understanding how the brain evolves in all animals, including humans."

Dr. Andrew Iwaniuk's unique collection will play a key role in helping to understand the evolution of flight in birds.

The opportunity to be part of both an evolutionary and behavioural program appeals to Iwaniuk.

"Dr. Stig Walsh (National Museums Scotland) contacted me about a potential collaboration on the evolution of avian brains," says Iwaniuk. "He was interested in reconstructing the brains of extinct birds and comparing the shape of their brains with that of modern birds. Similar comparisons have proven useful in understanding the behaviour of dinosaurs and various extinct mammals, including sabre-toothed cats and the ancestors of humans. However, there are few such comparisons involving birds. In this project, we aim to determine if there are changes occurring in the brain that coincide with the evolution of flightlessness."

Among other tools, researchers are using an incredibly sensitive CT (computerized tomography) scanner at Abertay ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Dundee, Scotland. They intend to analyze whole skulls and fossilized fragments to recreate accurate 3D models of extinct birds' brains. This is where Iwaniuk's collection comes into play.

He and Dr. Doug Wylie, a colleague at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta, have hundreds of bird species catalogued, and have recorded and sectioned their brains to chart changes in development. The brain sections could be measured to micron accuracy to re-create the complete brain, and then be matched with a similar bird skull in modern and fossil form. Bird skulls grow to a fixed size before they leave the nest, with the brain then growing to almost completely fill the cavity space. This means that bird skulls can be used to accurately calculate the size and shape of the brain.

By working this out, the size of the flocculus, a small part of the cerebellum responsible for integrating visual and balance signals during flight, can be established. The flocculus allows birds to focus on objects moving in three dimensions while they are flying.

Walsh, project leader and senior curator of Vertebrate Palaeobiology at National Museums Scotland, says that by charting the relative size of parts of the avian brain, researchers believe they can discover how the flocculus has evolved to deal with different flying abilities.

"This gives us new information about when birds first evolved the power of flight," he says.

The central research question is whether a larger flocculus is directly linked to a greater ability to process the visual and balance signals during flight. If proven, this could mark a major step forward in understanding bird evolution, and may shed light on whether some remarkably bird-like dinosaurs were truly dinosaurs or actually secondary flightless birds.

"The inability to fly has evolved numerous times through the evolutionary history of birds," says Iwaniuk. "Examples include penguins, kiwis and ostriches, as well as the extinct Great Auk of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Dodo. In fact, many flightless species are highly endangered or extinct, which is why this study relies on museum specimens to chart the shape and size of the brain. By performing these comparisons, we hope to better understand the behaviour of several extinct species as well as the changes required in the brain to evolve flight."

The researchers believe that the brain power required for flight may have become reduced in such species.

The project is scheduled to run until early 2012.

Weekend Pronghorn action on campus

Pronghorns men's hockey, as well as the men's and women's basketball teams, all have home dates this weekend as Canada West action comes to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus.

Men's Hockey

The Horns (3-6-1 CW, 7-11-1 overall) host the defending Canada West champion and CIS second ranked Alberta Golden Bears (8-1-1CW, 11-2-1 overall) Friday and Saturday nights at Nicholas Sheran Arena (7 p.m. puck drop).

The Horns look to put an end to a four-game losing streak, while the Bears have won three straight after sweeping UBC in Vancouver last weekend.

After only dressing 14 players in Saskatoon over the Halloween weekend, the Horns are slowly getting healthy and should have all but two players back from injury. All three of the Horns wins this season have come at home, while the Bears have yet to lose in regulation time on the road. Their only road blemish is a 3-2 shootout loss in Calgary.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team (0-4 CW, 6-6 overall) hopes to end some early woes and pick up its first victory of the regular season after being swept last weekend by the Regina Cougars. The Horns held leads both nights last weekend in the fourth quarter but were unable hold on versus the fourth ranked Regina Cougars.

This weekend's opponents, Fraser Valley Cascades (0-2 CW) and Thompson Rivers WolfPack (2-0 CW) are coming off bye weeks, with the WolfPack sweeping the Cascades during the conference-opening weekend.

Friday night the Horns face the WolfPack, followed by the Cascades Saturday. Tip-off for both Friday and Saturday nights is 6 p.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team (1-3 CW, 3-6 overall) looks to gain some momentum after a convincing 16-point victory over the Regina Cougars in their series finale last Saturday. Despite struggling offensively, hitting on less than 30 per cent of their shots, the Horns played tough defence, only surrendering 54 points and found a way to win.

Thompson Rivers (0-2 CW) and Fraser Valley (2-0 CW) are coming off their bye weeks. During the opening weekend of conference action, the Cascades swept Thompson Rivers in Kamloops.

Former Pronghorns' guard Barnaby Craddock coaches the Horns' Saturday night opponent, Fraser Valley.

Tip-off is scheduled to follow the women's game both nights at approximately 8 p.m.

Horns Swimming

The swim team hosts Memorial ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ from St John's, Newfoundland for a dual meet Saturday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Max Bell Aquatic Centre.

Women's Hockey

The women's hockey team (3-3 CW, 6-6 overall) will finally return to the ice after being off for the past two weeks.

The Horns face a tough task as they travel to Edmonton to face the perennial women's hockey power Alberta Pandas (10-0 CW).

The Pandas have only surrendered 9 goals in 10 conference games and are coming off a home sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend.

Puck drops both nights at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton at 7 p.m.

Dr. Ed Jurkowski (Music) and Dr. Deanna Oye (Music) co-presented a paper in July entitled, Interpreting the Music of György Kurtág, at the annual meeting of the International Musicological Society in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Dr. David Townsend (Education) and Dr. Pamela Adams (Education) released their book, The Essential Equation, A Handbook for School Improvement. Through case studies, research and best-practice information, the book is designed to help educators learn more about school improvement and the challenges facing educators today.

David Barrus has been accepted as the first MFA Dramatic Arts student and is specializing in scenic design for theatre, which also makes him the first recipient of the John Farwell Memorial Award.

Don Gill (Art) and dancer Sarah Williams (formerly of La La La Human Steps) are featured in a collaborative video-installation exhibition, The New Flâneurs: Contemporary Urban Practice and the Picturesque, running Sept. 5 through Dec. 13 in the RBC New Works Gallery in the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton.

Soprano Audrina Poepping-Steciw (BMus '09) placed first in the Provincial National Voice Class in the Kiwanis Music Festival in Edmonton this spring and represented Alberta in the National Class at the competition in Saskatoon in August.

Dr. Arlan Schultz (Music) returned from a summer residency at the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts at UC San Diego in La Jolla, California. Schultz was engaged in research at CRCA's large-speaker array audio spatialization lab.

James Graham's (New Media) installation, Unforgivable, used many commonly available commercial products – and specifically those of the French cosmetic giant L'Oreal – to draw connections back to their French fascist and anti-Semitic origins. Displayed in the SAAG storefront gallery during August, the exhibition examined the troubled history of Vichy, France.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will receive a 2009 Allied Arts Council Award for Excellence (AACE) at the Mayor's Luncheon for Business and the Arts on Sept. 10.

Michael Campbell's (Art) exhibition, Field Recordings of Icebergs Melting, toured over the summer to the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound, Ont. and then to the Esplanade Gallery in Medicine Hat. A version of this exhibition appeared at the Nanaimo Art Gallery in June.

Dana Inkster (New Media) has received generous support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for her new production, Ladies of the Saturday Night, a short documentary about lives lived in the sex trade in Alberta boomtowns. The production is slated for completion by fall 2010.

The Contemporary Works Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. David Renter (Music) and including ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and community musicians performed at the first incarnation of the Medicine Hat Jazz Festival in Lethbridge in June. ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ musicians included student Brad Brouwer, Ryan Heseltine (BMus/Ed '04), Don Robb (former U of L Jazz Ensemble conductor), Nick Sullivan (Music) and Ed Wasiak (Music Education)

Bobbi-Lee Copeland (BA '05), who has been working as an adult literacy instructor for the Lillooet Area Library Association, has been accepted to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan Indigenous Education Master's Program.

Dr. David Renter (Music) has been invited to participate in the 2009 Chiayi City International Band Festival in Chiayi City, Taiwan in December 2009. Renter will perform with an Afro-Cuban Jazz group from Indianapolis, Indiana.

Andrew Staniland (BMus '00, Great Distinction) who completed his PhD in composition at ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto in 2008, went on to win the grand prize in CBC's National Evolution Composers Competition in March 2009. Staniland has accepted a tenure-track appointment in composition at Memorial ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Newfoundland, starting in January 2010.

Nursing a viable career path for men

Changing long-entrenched attitudes can often be a slow and gradual process. Peter Kellett, an academic assistant in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Nursing program, is attempting to give that process a nudge.

Kellett and the Faculty of Health Sciences will present a Men in Nursing Recruitment Day, Feb. 13, as they try and show men that nursing is not only a viable career option but it should be a desirable one as well.

"The primary challenge of attracting men to nursing is the general public views nursing as a woman's profession," Kellett, a nurse for 14 years, says. "What I'm really hoping to do with this day is to help men realize that this is not just a profession for women."

Drawn to nursing because of an interest in the medical field and a mother who worked as a nurse, Kellett says there are many false impressions about the profession that seem to steer men away.

"I think one of the misconceptions is that nursing is somehow a lower profession and it is not. It's very much a dynamic and challenging career and very worthwhile to be part of — you make a difference every day," Kellett says. "I had considered other health-care professions but what attracted me to nursing is that nurses are the people who have a long-term relationship with the patients. I think the bond between nurse and patient is like no other in the health-care field."

While the number of male nurses is growing in Canada, with men accounting for just six per cent of all nurses, there's much room for improvement. Now is also the perfect time to get into the field, Kellett explains. With many nurses from the baby boomer era expected to retire in the coming years, he cites the Canadian Nurses Association as predicting a shortfall of 113,000 registered nurses by 2016.

"In terms of job security, you really can't ask for much better."

The U of L, and its partner Lethbridge College, will help satisfy some of that need with a pair of program offerings. Currently, the Nursing Education in Southwestern Alberta (NESA) program is available as a four-year baccalaureate program in conjunction with Lethbridge College. Its numbers have steadily been on the rise in recent years with more than 172 first-year students currently enrolled (with 564 in the entire four-year program).

New to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in the fall is an after-degree program that will accept initially a class of 35 students. This is for those who already have a degree and who meet the inherent prerequisites. Offered in an accelerated format, it consists of six consecutive semesters.

"It's very demanding but you could train to be a nurse in two years," Kellett says. "From the point of view of getting through education and getting into the workforce, it is a very attractive option for some people."

Kellett is testimony to the many avenues nursing can take people. He says training as a generalist in the health-care field opens innumerable doors and offers a diversity within a career that is entirely unique. In his 14 years as a nurse, he's held positions in Newfoundland, Texas, northern Manitoba and southern Alberta, working on surgical floors, at remote nursing stations, as a primary health-care manager, in the emergency room and now as an instructor.

Given all that, at the end of the day, it's mostly about connecting with people.

"If you want to have a job where you have the potential to make a difference in people's lives every day, nursing is a great option," he says.
