Steacy dominates at Golden Bear Classic

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns thrower Heather Steacy is back on the indoor throwing circuit and she's quickly making up for lost time.

After taking a season off to focus on the outdoor version of her event, Steacy kicked off the 2011 indoor track season in style at the Golden Bear Classic in Edmonton.

On her sixth and final throw, the Fine Arts student registered a phenomenal throw of 19.24 metres to win the weight throw event by nearly two metres. She became only the third woman to eclipse the 19-metre mark in CIS history and shattered her previous personal best of 17.97 metres, set in 2009.

Steacy narrowly missed the CIS record of 19.66 metres set by former Pronghorns athlete, Kate Forbes, at the 2005 CIS Championships in Winnipeg, Man.

Steacy's outstanding effort earned her Pronghorns Female Athlete of the Week honours.

On the men's side, fourth-year defenseman Curtis Cooper was a pillar of strength on the Horns' blueline last weekend, despite the Horns dropping both games in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons.

Cooper was the lone Pronghorn to finish the weekend with a plus rating over the two games and assisted on the Horns' only goal Friday night. He also registered two shots on goal as he was named Pronghorns Male Athlete of the Week.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is proud to congratulate the 30 student-athletes who have been recognized as Academic All-Canadians. Athletes need to maintain an 80 per cent average in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to earn the All-Canadian honour.

Pronghorns excel as all-canadians

Every year, the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) honours student athletes who excel in sport at the university level, while maintaining an 80 per cent average in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, as Academic All-Canadians. Recently, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge recognized the achievement of 41 outstanding student-athletes, who achieved Academic All-Canadian Honours. This number represents over 22 per cent of our student-athlete body and an increase of six athletes from last year, a remarkable number signifying the importance our program places on ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.
