workings of our government</em></p> <p><strong>Melvin Wong</strong></p> <p>Inspired by the experiences, travels and success stories of several 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge alumni working in Ottawa, as well as the guidance of several 免费福利资源在线看片 faculty and staff, Melvin Wong (BA '78), assistant deputy minister of <a href="http://www.advancededucation.gov.ab.ca" rel="nofollow">Alberta Advanced Education and Technology</a>, embarked on a lifelong career in civil service.</p> <p>"Originally, I thought of becoming a chartered accountant, then I had an 'a-ha' moment when I spoke with a counselor. She helped me find out what career opportunities I would have with an economics degree. That's when I decided to go into public service," explains Wong.</p> <p>Wong's first experience with government began in his third year with the economics club.</p> <p>"I went to a club meeting and someone nominated me for president. It drew me into the administration of the economics department. I learned about the administration and culture of academia, and how universities run. That helps me in my current job because I deal with the universities and colleges throughout Alberta."</p> <p>Wong has been working in government since his graduation in 1978. He worked in Ottawa initially, as well as at the departments of tourism and small business, economic development, innovation and science and advanced education and technology in Alberta. He travels extensively and has years of senior management and business development experience. He taught economics, international business and marketing, and multinational finance at several post-secondary institutions.</p> <p>"I chose a life in government because you can work in so many areas and be exposed to so many things," says Wong. "It keeps life really interesting. I am pretty happy right now."</p> <p><strong>Greg Weadick</strong></p> <p>Graduating from high school, Greg Weadick (BASc '76), Lethbridge West MLA and parliamentary assistant to the minister of advanced education and technology (PA), spent a year working construction before realizing that he wanted to get an education.</p> <p>"I started at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge in pre-med and later decided to complete my degree in <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas/bio" rel="nofollow">biology</a>. The 免费福利资源在线看片 was quite small and everybody knew each other. We often played bridge in the hallway, had coffee with professors and fellow students in the cafeteria or attended cabarets in the evenings. It was quite collegial," remembers Weadick. "I think one of the important things I got from attending the 免费福利资源在线看片 was that I learned to question everything and come up with answers for myself, not just accept other people's opinions. Perhaps the most important things I gained from attending the 免费福利资源在线看片, however, were the relationships I built, relationships with staff, professors and students because those were the people in my community."</p> <p>Weadick certainly understands community. He is a local businessperson and has spent several years doing environmental work for two local engineering firms. He also served on Lethbridge City Council from 1991-2001, and was the founding president of both Fifth on Fifth Youth Services and the Dragon Boat Festival.</p> <p>In 2008, Weadick was elected MLA and served as the Chair of the cabinet policy committee on the economy before being appointed to his current position as PA in January this year.</p> <p>"My goal is to represent the citizens of Lethbridge in Edmonton and make sure that our people are well represented," says Weadick.</p> <p><strong>Brendan Wade</strong></p> <p>As executive assistant to the Leader of the Alberta Liberal Caucus, Brendan Wade (BA '10) is on a voyage of self-discovery &ndash; a journey he began while working towards his bachelor of arts in <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas/pol/" rel="nofollow">political science</a> and <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas/his" rel="nofollow">history</a> at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge.</p> <p>Growing up in Vulcan, Wade spent many hours helping at school and community events and developing an important sense of community. With its smaller campus and close proximity to home, the U of L felt like a perfect fit for Wade.</p> <p>"I can't say enough good things about my campus experience. I got involved with several clubs. I was the founding president of the food and beverage club, which is still going strong and helping make the university experience great for other students," says Wade. "I found that my professors at the 免费福利资源在线看片 demanded a fair amount of work and that was a good thing. I still connect with some of my profs because I welcome and value their advice and input. Working in partisan politics like I do, I really appreciate the skills I learned at the 免费福利资源在线看片, one of those being the ability to look at issues from all sides."</p> <p>Such critical thinking skills are a vital asset to him in his job as he does everything from preparing briefs and face books to chauffeuring and scheduling appointments for the opposition leader.</p> <p>"This job is a great learning opportunity. It has helped me cement some of my beliefs and call others into question," says Wade. "As I continue to learn and grow I know I am developing valuable skills that will help me in the future."</p> <p><strong>Mike Simpson</strong></p> <p>Following his father's footsteps, Mike Simpson (BA '00), executive assistant for the solicitor general and minister of public security, intended to become a lawyer when he started a <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas/pol/" rel="nofollow">political science</a> degree at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge. Taking a <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/finearts/drama" rel="nofollow">drama</a> class in his second year changed his mind.</p> <p>"I knew after that class that I did not want to go into law. I played in a band with my cousin. I acted in plays. I changed to a double major and figured I would go into fine arts after I graduated," recalls Simpson. "In my third year I got involved in student politics. I was the fine arts representative on the <a href="http://www.ulsu.ca" rel="nofollow">students' union</a>. In 1999, I ran for students' union vice-president internal affairs and won. It was pretty interesting. 免费福利资源在线看片 was great for preparing me to do work. Learning to write monologues helped me write speeches. Learning the theories and processes in political science and learning how to research have all benefited me."</p> <p>In 2001, Simpson's music career was literally leaving him hungry. Simpson began volunteering for the PC Constituency Association; after all, they had food. With a full stomach, Simpson caught the political bug and soon worked his way up the political ladder from research officer to his current position as executive assistant.</p> <p>"My job is to help the solicitor general do his part to keep the government moving in the right direction," says Simpson. "I am happy doing quiet change. It might be behind the scenes, where nobody else recognizes, but I know that I have made a difference."</p> <p><strong>Warren Chandler</strong></p> <p>For Warren Chandler (BA '01), executive assistant to the minister of transportation, attending the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge was more than the next step on his life's journey; it was an investment in a future he could not wait to begin.</p> <p>"I always assumed I would go to university, and the U of L was always my number one choice of schools. My dad and uncle went there and I looked forward to going there," says Chandler. "I enjoyed the small classes, the academic challenges. My professors were always pushing us to think outside the box and think critically. In class one day, Dr. Paul Viminitz declared he was a feminist and I think he offended most of the women in class, but on further analysis, he was able to back up his claim. He taught me to back up what I say and to think critically."</p> <p>Critical thinking and the ability to deal with stress and pressure and to write and communicate clearly are skills that Chandler honed at the 免费福利资源在线看片 &ndash; skills that are vital to his success in the political world. He began working in an introductory research role at the legislature in the fall of 2001. Since then, Chandler has steadily moved up the ranks to his current position.</p> <p>"I do anything and everything that the minister needs in order to conduct his daily duties," explains Chandler. "It can be extremely stressful, but it is very exciting and I am very happy where I am."</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>We are only a month into the new year, but there have already been some significant changes to both the provincial and federal political landscapes. These changes will pave the way for a renewed effort by the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge to continue a dialogue with the government about our strengths and challenges.</p> <p>Speaking provincially, two former-government MLAs crossed the floor and a cabinet shuffle occurred that included some interesting changes. The most notable changes included Edmonton-based MLA Gene Zwozdesky becoming minister of health, while Calgary MLA Ron Liepert moved to energy. Former Sustainable Resource Development Minister, Ted Morton, became minister of finance and enterprise. The 免费福利资源在线看片 will spend time during the coming months educating all new ministers about the impact the U of L makes in their respective areas in terms of teaching and research.</p> <p>Doug Horner remained minister of advanced education and technology, but was also named Deputy Premier. This certainly speaks to the influence Horner has at the cabinet table.</p> <p>There were a few other changes that have the potential to change the political landscape for southern Alberta. Former Minister of Agriculture, George Groeneveld, was moved from cabinet (his riding is situated just south of Calgary) leaving minister Rob Renner of Medicine Hat the sole minister south of Calgary. Groeneveld visited our campus three or four times during his tenure as minister and always expressed a willingness to understand the positions of the 免费福利资源在线看片.</p> <p>The U of L, as it has done in the past, will make efforts to build relationships with all relevant ministers through meetings and tours of campus.</p> <p>While the Lethbridge-area is without a minister, the four government members that are geographically close to the U of L have been handed duties above that of a private member. Lethbridge-West MLA Greg Weadick, for example, has been named parliamentary assistant to the minister of advanced education and technology. The U of L will certainly count on Weadick to help advance 免费福利资源在线看片 messaging to his colleagues in government.</p> <p>Other local appointments include Cardston-Taber-Warner MLA Broyce Jacobs becoming the parliamentary assistant to the minister of agriculture and rural development, Livingstone-Macleod MLA Evan Berger remaining in his role as parliamentary assistant to the minister of sustainable resource development and Little-Bow MLA Barry McFarland being named as a member of the treasury board.</p> <p>A small cabinet shuffle also occurred at the federal level this month, but the biggest news, as far as the U of L is concerned, is the announcement that Lethbridge MP Rick Casson will not seek another term in office. Casson, a former employee of the U of L, helped move along many files for the 免费福利资源在线看片. He knocked on doors to advance initiatives and was never hesitant to pick up the phone to ask about how a government policy might impact our institution. His work on our behalf was impressive. He will be certainly missed on the federal scene and will leave big shoes to fill.</p> <p>Building relationships with elected and non-elected government members is important in ensuring effective communication between the U of L and decision-makers in Edmonton and Ottawa. Senior administration at the U of L has already begun to engage and re-engage government members to ensure productive working relationships are forged.</p> <p><em>Richard Westlund is the 免费福利资源在线看片's <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>The Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building (AWESB) has been a popular tour for elected and non-elected government members over the past few months. Considering the magnitude of environmental challenges facing governments around the world, it should not be surprising that decision makers are taking time to learn more about the important research taking place here at the U of L.</p> <p>In October, Alberta's Minister of Environment Rob Renner spent a full day at the U of L, with the AWESB serving as a primary focus. Minister Renner engaged with researchers and graduate students. The minister is acting on a mandate letter from Premier Stelmach that includes implementing the renewed Water for Life strategy to "ensure the province has the quality and quantity of water needed now and into the future to support environmental, economic and social needs of Albertans".</p> <p>It provides a background for Minister Renner, who is now taking the time to understand the expertise that can be found at Alberta's universities.</p> <p>Renner's visit occurred a week after his deputy minister, Jim Ellis, also toured the AWESB. Deputy Premier of the Northwest Territories Michael Miltenberger (BASc '75) spent two days on campus near the beginning of October, while Alberta's Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Sustainable Resource Development, Evan Berger, took the tour and spoke to researchers in September.</p> <p>The expertise housed in the AWESB is well known. Certainly it was the quality of research here at the 免费福利资源在线看片 that led to the building being funded by the Alberta government in the first place.</p> <p>It is essential that government officials and 免费福利资源在线看片 researchers continue to dialogue and maintain positive working relationships. There is little doubt that the discoveries and ideas shaped at the U of L are informing good public policy as well as helping governments balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.</p> <p>On Oct. 23, Provost Andy Hakin and I met with a number of Calgary MLAs. The message we delivered was that the U of L plays a big part of the solution when it comes to addressing Calgary students' access to post-secondary education.</p> <p>The numbers are impressive. Thirty-five percent of our total enrolment comes from Calgary, with enrolment at the U of L's Calgary campus at an all-time high of 538 students. Not only is the U of L providing access for traditional students, whether they are right out of high school or transfer students, but the program in Calgary also offers access to students who might not otherwise be able to achieve a post-secondary education. Every Calgary MLA we spoke to in Calgary was appreciative of our efforts.</p> <p>The U of L needs to be focused on Calgary because the demographics inform us that future student demand is going to come from this market.</p> <p>While the number of 18 to 24 year-olds is expected to drop in southern Alberta (south of Calgary) in the coming decade, this segment of the population will continue to grow in the Calgary area. More and more these Calgary students will be looking for an educational experience that is personal and of the highest quality. We believe these Calgary students will be looking at the options the U of L can provide.</p> <p>Therefore it is critical that the Alberta government understands the U of L is a pan-Alberta institution that educates students from all corners of the province, from across the country and indeed the world as a whole.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/calgary" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Calgary</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/ls-calgary-campus" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">L&#039;s Calgary campus</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/environmental-science-building" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Environmental Science Building</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/alberta-government" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta government</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/evan-berger" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Evan Berger</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/jim-ellis" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Jim Ellis</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/rob-renner" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Rob Renner</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/stelmach" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Stelmach</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/andy-hakin" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Andy Hakin</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/deputy-minister" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Deputy Minister</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/minister" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Minister</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/minister-environment" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">minister of environment</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/parliamentary-assistant" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">parliamentary assistant</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/deputy-premier" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Deputy Premier</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/premier" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Premier</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="免费福利资源在线看片 continues to welcome government guests" class="rdf-meta"></span> Wed, 04 Nov 2009 22:17:25 +0000 trevor.kenney 4853 at /unews
