Engaging educator Dr. Marc Roussel earns 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award

A passionate teacher who works to ensure his students, regardless of their level, learn not just content but the skills they need to solve problems long after they’ve left university, Dr. Marc Roussel has been named the 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award winner.

Roussel, a professor of chemistry, is a dedicated and engaging teacher who combines extensive knowledge and understanding of his subject matter with innovative teaching methods, applications to real-world situations and the expectation of regular student participation — all because of his earnest desire to see students succeed. He will be presented with the Excellence in Teaching Award at Fall 2024 Convocation, Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 10 a.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Centre for Sport and Wellness.

Dr. Marc Roussel teaches with an earnest desire to see students succeed.

Following an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at McGill ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Roussel joined the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 1995. A theoretical chemist, he has taught courses from first year to graduate school.

To provide students with the best possible resources for success, Roussel has written three textbooks, starting with a text for his second-year physical chemistry course. Roussel was also an early adopter of the “flipped classroom,” where students are expected to complete assigned readings before class so that class time can be spent working together on problems.

Roussel strongly believes in teaching students to use modern tools alongside instruction in the chemical sciences. This philosophy extends from teaching first- and second-year students advanced calculator use, all the way through to upper-level courses where computer-based problem solving is integrated throughout, enabling students to see how the theory learned in class applies in the real world.

He has found little things can make a big difference to a struggling student. Providing encouragement, saying yes to a reasonable request, including for his time, and looking for ways to make students’ lives easier are standard operating procedures for Roussel.

In his research lab, Roussel strives to provide mentorship that will prepare students for a variety of careers in the quantitative sciences. He uses a range of approaches to support student learning, including weekly meetings with each student, whether that student is an undergraduate taking an Independent Study or a PhD student, detailed written feedback at every opportunity, and a blog containing useful information on almost every stage of the student journey.

Roussel has been an excellent mentor not only for ULethbridge students but also for new faculty members and young people participating in science fairs. He was Head Judge of the Lethbridge Regional Science Fair from 2016 to 2020, Deputy National Judge-in-Chief at the Canada-Wide Science Fair from 2019 to 2023 and started a three-year term as National Judge-in-Chief this year.

Roussel has taken on several administrative positions in addition to his professorial duties, including being department Chair and more recently, Associate Dean in the School of Graduate Studies, where he supports graduate student learning through a variety of activities, notably by organizing discussion sessions for graduate supervisors where they can learn best practices from each other.

Throughout his career, Roussel has demonstrated a commitment to improving himself as a scientist and teacher and helping his colleagues and students do the same.

First Graduate Mentorship Award posthumously granted to exceptional mentor and leader, Dr. Gülden Özcan

A tireless and unwavering leader dedicated to scholarly activism, Dr. Gülden Özcan was an erstwhile supporter of graduate learners, encouraging her students to take ownership of their graduate experience through disciplined exploration of their topics and to believe in their ideas.

Özcan, who passed away in May 2022, is the first to be honoured with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge School of Graduate Studies Graduate Mentorship Award. She will be recognized as part of the 2023 Fall Convocation ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, 10 a.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gymnasium.

“In my exchanges with Dr. Özcan’s students, it became clear that she embodied all the qualities the Graduate Mentorship Award is meant to recognize: guiding students through all the steps of their graduate journey, from a student’s first inquiries onward, encouraging intellectual exploration, and genuine caring about student welfare,” says Dr. Marc Roussel, associate dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Gülden Özcan

Students with the good fortune of having had Dr. Gülden Özcan as an instructor learned very quickly how devoted she was to ensuring their academic success. An unwavering leader who inspired and motivated learners to be creative thinkers and global citizens, Özcan was especially impactful as a mentor to graduate students.

Originally from Turkey, Özcan completed a BA at Baskent ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Ankara and an MA and PhD at Carleton ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. She joined the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 2018 as an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology. During her short time as a faculty member, Özcan distinguished herself through her work, including involvement in radical theatre, with the Scholars at Risk program and in critical police studies. She also worked at challenging and disrupting systemic and social injustice issues on campus and was the first ever recipient of the SNAC+ (Support Network for Academics of Colour Plus) Excellence in Equity Award.

Her greatest strength was engaging the minds of her students, and should any express an interest in graduate studies, she was quick to take an interest in nurturing that desire. Özcan was known for acting as supervisor to students before they had even gained admittance to the graduate program, so committed was she to supporting their interests. Whether she eventually agreed to supervise a student or help find them a supervisor more aligned with their specific interests, she was a supportive presence in the important initial stages of their graduate school journey.

As a mentor and supervisor, she encouraged her students to take ownership of their graduate education. Graduate students, she believed, should not only think about what they want to get from their programs but should be heard when they express their vision for their graduate education. Accordingly, Özcan taught students to advocate for themselves and to believe in their ideas.

Özcan’s dedication to her craft, and especially her students, was no more apparent than when she became ill. Her first concern was for her students’ ongoing supervision, and beyond helping students find new supervisors, she continued to be a positive, committed and supportive presence in their programs as long as she was able.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers awarded more than $2.3 million in NSERC, CFI funding support

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers across a breadth of disciplines have earned more than $2.3 million in funding support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), as announced by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, and the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health in Edmonton today.

The funding support is part of a $960-million investment by the federal government in research activities across the country.

“This funding is an integral part of the research process and supports our faculty members and their teams in multiple ways, from hiring essential personnel to training graduate and undergraduate students, to acquiring essential equipment and more,” says Dr. Dena McMartin, ULethbridge vice-president (research). “This support allows our researchers to continue to pursue the solutions to a host of issues facing society today and in the future.”

“My best wishes to all the recipients of these grants, awards and scholarships,” adds Minister Holland. “The government is pleased to invest in your diverse array of health, natural sciences and engineering research projects because we know that your ideas, passion and hard work, as well as the evidence you uncover, are instrumental in improving the health and quality of life of people in Canada, and your findings contribute to the international research effort around the world.”

In all, nine ULethbridge researchers were successful in their NSERC grant applications, which included funding for projects in neuroscience, biological sciences, chemistry & biochemistry and mathematics & computer science. As well, Drs. Majid Mohajerani and Stacey Wetmore earned CFI John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) awards.

Among the projects are Dr. Roy Golsteyn’s (biological sciences) work investigating human cell division and utilizing beneficial chemicals in Canadian prairie plants, which was funded at $300,000 ($60,000 per year over five years). As well, Dr. Bruce McNaughton (neuroscience) receives $420,000 over five years for his study to understand the neural basis of long-term, episodic memory, and Dr. Robert Benkoczi (mathematics & computer science) is receiving a Discovery Development Grant valued at $40,000 over two years as he conducts fundamental research into finding new and more efficient algorithms for planning large scale evacuations.

“The projects our researchers are involved in cover a wide range of topics, all of which are focused on bettering society while providing excellent mentoring and training to undergraduate and graduate students,” adds McMartin. “These funding awards give just a glimpse of the breadth of research activity taking place daily across our campuses.”

Following are details on today’s grant announcements.

NSERC

Discovery Grant (5 years)

Dr. Roy Golsteyn (biological sciences) — Natural products as novel tools to investigate human cell division ($300,000) — Our research uncovers how human cells divide and seeks beneficial chemicals in Canadian prairie plants. From potential cancer treatments to sustainable practices, we are supporting scientific and economic innovation, while fostering cultural exchange with southern Alberta Indigenous communities.

Dr. Igor Kovalchuk (biological sciences) — Transgenerational response to stress in Arabidopsis ($255,000).

Dr. Marc Roussel (chemistry and biochemistry) — Delays in gene expression models: methodological developments ($225,000) — Development of methods for building and analyzing mathematical models of gene expression systems, where transcription, translation and splicing may play a significant role in the timing of events.

Dr. Bruce McNaughton (neuroscience) — Consolidation of cortical memory representations into hippocampus-independent form: neural ensemble dynamics and mechanisms ($420,000) — We are attempting to understand the neural basis of long-term, episodic memory, and its integration into generalized knowledge encoded by brain cells in the cerebral cortex.

Discovery Development Grant (2 years)

Dr. Olga Kovalchuk (biological sciences) — Exosomes - important mediators of direct and bystander radiation effects on the brain ($40,000).

Dr. Robert Benkoczi (mathematics & computer science) — Models and algorithms for facility location ($40,000) — This award supports fundamental research into finding new and more efficient algorithms for planning large scale evacuations.

Dr. Shahadat Hossain (mathematics & computer science) — Efficient computation with sparse and structured matrices – mathematical derivatives and beyond ($40,000).

Research Tools and Instruments (1 year)

Dr. Trushar Patel (chemistry & biochemistry) — Isothermal Titration Calorimetry for Studying Macromolecular Interactions ($150,000) — The installation of ITC (Isothermal Titration Calorimetry) at ULethbridge strengthens the biochemical and biophysical infrastructure as well as the research programs aimed at examining communication events that are at the heart of viral infections and cancer.

Dr. Matthew Tata (neuroscience) — Critical Refit and Upgrade to Electroencephalography Lab at ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge ($149,140) — This upgrade includes state-of-the-art electroencephalography systems to study how brain regions communicate with each other while solving the computational problems of perception and cognition.

John R. Evans Leaders Fund

Dr. Majid Mohajerani (neuroscience) — Innovative brain imaging techniques for aging-associated diseases ($563,466).

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers from the Departments of Mathematics & Computer Science, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Physics & Astronomy were awarded grants totalling more than $277,000 as the Government of Canada announced funding awards through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, along with the Honourable Mona Fortier, President of the Treasury Board, announced funding of more than $506 million — an investment in the world’s brightest minds to increase the impact of science, technology and innovation in Canada.

“Discovery is the foundation of all advancements. Through this major investment in some of Canada’s most promising and innovative researchers we are supporting scientists and students to become global leaders in their field,” says Champagne. “By helping to expand the frontiers of science, we are investing in a better society and a brighter future for Canadians.”

Researchers from across the country are receiving the funding to continue to lead world-class research programs in a wide variety of natural sciences and engineering disciplines. These include research programs focused on climate change, chemistry, biology, mathematics and statistics, computer science and artificial intelligence, and engineering.

Dr. Dena McMartin, ULethbridge vice-president (research), says the continued success of applicants from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is indicative of the innovative environment nurtured by faculty.

“When you have world-class faculty dedicated to their craft, and dedicated to their students and discovery, it fuels their own research programs and inspires colleagues to push for these funding opportunities as well,” says McMartin. “The success of these researchers continues to advance the reputation of their programs within their respective fields and opens up even greater opportunities for their students, trainees and further innovation down the road.”

The Research Support Fund supports a portion of the costs associated with managing the research funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, such as salaries for staff who provide administration support, training costs for workplace health and safety, maintenance of libraries and laboratories, and administrative costs associated with obtaining patents for inventions.

Ethics of gene editing the focus of ARRTI Speaker Series free public presentation

The explosive issue of gene editing and the ethical questions surrounding this emerging technique will serve as the focus for the first Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) Speaker Series talk of 2020.

The ethics of gene editing is a particular concern for members of ARRTI since the most powerful techniques currently available are based on RNA technologies.

Dr. Eric Mathison, clinical ethicist with Alberta Health Services, will present The Ethics of Human Gene Editing: Pathways and Roadblocks on Tuesday, January 21 at 3 p.m. in room SA6010 of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s new Science Commons building.

The ethical issue of gene editing grabbed headlines in 2018 when it was announced that Dr. He Jiankui had edited the genes of twin baby girls conceived in vitro.

“It’s an urgent discussion for scientists, ethicists and society at large,” says the U of L’s Dr. Marc Roussel, a professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and member of ARRTI. “The development of tools for gene editing has outstripped regulatory frameworks and, to a great extent, discussions of the ethics of deploying these techniques to alter human embryos.”

Mathison’s presentation is from research he conducted as a postdoctoral fellow at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He will survey the current debate about the ethics of gene editing and discuss an ethically sound pathway for translation of these techniques to the clinic.

Roussel says the ethics of gene editing is a particular concern for members of ARRTI since the most powerful techniques currently available are based on RNA technologies.

“ARRTI has a long-standing commitment to the education of well-rounded students who will be equipped both to solve challenging scientific problems, and to engage with the difficult ethical questions that will arise throughout their careers,” he says. “We are therefore very pleased to host Dr. Mathison’s timely and important presentation, which we hope will stimulate a broader discussion both within the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and in the community.”

Faculty and student researchers buoyed by NSERC funding

A diverse and comprehensive group of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers was awarded $1.98 million in funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) this week, part of $558 million in total funding to post-secondary researchers and students, the largest investment in research from NSERC this year.

Projects in chemistry & biochemistry, neuroscience, kinesiology & physical education, mathematics & computer science, environmental science, biology and psychology all received funding support.

In addition, eight graduate students received $336,000 in funding, further broadening the impact of the federal government’s investment in research activities at the U of L.

“Canada supports science and our talented researchers. We are delivering on our historic investment in research and in the next generation of scientists. These remarkable researchers and students we are celebrating are working to make the world a better place and to secure a brighter future for all Canadians,” says The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport.

Dr. Erasmus Okine, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s vice-president (research) says he is impressed with the breadth of research being funded.

“It speaks to the level of activity we have going on throughout the institution, and the variety of issues our researchers and students are tackling,” says Okine. “This level of funding is a recognition by NSERC that our people are making a real difference through their research work and will continue to do so.”

Projects in chemistry & biochemistry, neuroscience, kinesiology & physical education, mathematics & computer science, environmental science, biology and psychology all received funding support. Dr. Robert Sutherland’s study in the Department of Neuroscience, Hippocampus and memory: A systems level approach, earned $285,000 over five years, the largest award of the funded projects.

Sutherland describes the hippocampus as being situated at the hub of a set of distributed cortical networks that represent movement and perceptual information. Amnesia is the most prominent effect of damage to or dysfunction of the hippocampus and most forms of human memory disorder involve the hippocampus.

“The current proposal examines, in detail, how the interactions between the hippocampus and other cortical networks establish long-term memories,” says Sutherland, director of the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience. “We will discover exactly which types of information depend on the hippocampus and how the hippocampus modifies the functioning of the cortex through long-term interactions.”

Dr. Louise Barrett, Canada Research Chair in Cognition, Evolution and Behaviour and member of the U of L’s Department of Psychology, will receive $200,000 over five years (plus an accelerator supplement of $120,000 over three years) for her project, Behavioural Flexibility, Fertility and Social Network Influences in Human and Non-Human Primates.

In her work, Barrett aims to understand how evolutionary processes influence the behaviour of human and non-human primates.

“More specifically, I am interested in exploring those aspects that we share with other primate species, and those that make us different,” she says.

Chinook Symposium winners awarded

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s 12th annual Chinook Symposium took place recently, showcasing research work from high school, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as special presentations from postdoctoral fellows and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Collegiate iGEM (international Genetic Engineering Machines) team.

The first Chinook Symposium was organized by Dr. Hans-Joachim Wieden, Dr. Marc Roussel and Susan Hill in 2007 and the event has grown dramatically over the years. This year, 46 posters were presented, compared to 22 posters at the inaugural event in 2007. The event has also grown to involve the community at large, inviting guest judges such as high school teachers, politicians and business leaders. This year, 2018 Alumnus of the Year, Bill Spenceley (BASc ‘’81) served in the role.

The event began in 2007 by awarding eight cash prizes to the top two graduate and undergraduate students each in biochemistry and chemistry. In 2012, a rookie award was added to recognize students presenting at a conference for the first time, and in 2013 a PhD division was added. Cash prizes are now awarded to the top two PhD presenters in biochemistry and in chemistry.

In 2017 and 2018, the Canadian Journal of Chemistry generously sponsored two Canadian Journal of Chemistry Awards for Best Student Presentation, one at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level. This brings the current count to 14 cash prizes as well as a certificate for top rookie presenter.

Students compete for cash at annual Chinook Symposium

More than 30 of the U of L's top Chemistry and Biochemistry students will have their work on display on Friday, Sept. 27 at the 7th Annual Chinook Symposium, a one-day research presentation competition hosted by the Chemistry and Biochemistry departments.

There's money on the table for a select group of winners, who can take home $300 for a first-place finish or $100 for a second place finish.

The competition is judged by faculty members and external community reviewers, including researchers from different disciplines at the U of L, the Animal Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) and the federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Research Centre.

Since 2007, the Chinook Symposium winners have received more than $11,000 and, to date, 225 students have had the benefit of participating in the activity.

"The prize money is a nice incentive, but it is also truly the 'thought' that counts, because the competition encourages students to put forward their best work, and have it showcased with their peers research and reviewed by the team of judges," said Dr. Marc Roussel, this year's Chinook Symposium coordinator.

"This is a significant benefit as they pursue research work at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level of study," Roussel said. "Due to the funding and the experience students get in the labs here, a lot of them start their BSc and stay for the MSc and sometimes PhD as well. Without grants and scholarships or an activity like our Symposium, some of the students who have participated would not have pursued their MSc or PhD."

The event takes place on Friday, September 27 in the Atrium of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall. Poster presentations and assessments begin at 1 p.m.

Gold Medal presentations involving the doctoral candidates take place at 4:30 p.m. in classroom B660, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 5, at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union ballrooms. A total of 116 employees who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service will be honoured, along with 20 retiring employees.
