ࡱ>  "bjbjbZbZ ;:0_0_` ` 8?[Dzzzuwwwwww$!zzzzzzuzu=lV-a05h"h"=h"=$zzzzzzzzzzh"zzzzzzzzz` Y :  GUIDELINES FOR COMPLETING A PRACTICUM OR INTERNSHIP Master of Education Program ѸԴ߿Ƭ of Lethbridge The Graduate Practicum (Ed 5550) provides an opportunity for students to explore, in a practical setting (either in their own or anothers work setting), ideas that have emanated from on-campus studies, and to enhance professional practice under the mentorship of a faculty member. The Graduate Internship (Ed 5560) provides an opportunity to develop specific professional skills related to a new professional role, job or context under the mentorship of a qualified field supervisor and a faculty member. 1. Options There are two ways in which a student can engage in Practica or Internships: 1. Practica or Internships may be scheduled as part of the faculty timetable under the responsibility of one or more faculty member(s). Registrants in these group Practica/Internships meet as a class with the faculty member at regularly scheduled intervals in order to provide assistance and support for writing proposals, engaging in the Practicum/Internship and presentation/completion of final reports. Students may enroll in these scheduled Practica and Internships using the usual class enrollment procedure via The Bridge (on-line registration system). 2. A graduate student may individually initiate a Practicum or Internship with a faculty member, following the processes outlined in these Guidelines for Practica (Education 5550) and Internships (Education 5560). For this option, it is necessary for the student to obtain approval from a faculty member who agrees to supervise the study, complete and submit the appropriate registration form and proposal to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Education. 2. Regulations Normally, a student cannot register in a Practicum/Internship until after she/he has completed at least one course from which the Practicum/Internship evolves. Two or more students may work together on a Practicum/Internship, providing it can be demonstrated that the activity will be enhanced by such a partnership. A maximum of two Practica/Internships may be accepted for credit in the M.Ed. program. The student must complete a proposal, meet with the supervisor as indicated in the proposal (minimum 10 hours), devote at least 100 practical hours to the project, and complete a final report (see Procedures which follow). Practica and Internships are graded on a Pass/Fail basis. A second reader is not required for the Practicum; however, the nature of the Internship requires that a qualified field supervisor be appointed in addition to the supervising faculty member. It is the responsibility of the student to make the initial contact with those to be involved in the Practicum/Internship placement. Once verbal agreement has been achieved, the student must contact the Field Experience Office in the Faculty of Education, which will officially set up the placement. 3. Preparation of Proposal Exploratory Meeting. The student meets with an appropriate faculty member in order to discuss the Practicum/Internship and obtains tentative agreement to serve as supervisor for the study. Student Preparatory Work. The student does the required preliminary reading and other preparatory work and generates a proposal (approx. 5 pages) for the Practicum/Internship (including introduction and rationale, clear statement of issue/concern/challenge/purpose, link to a personal professional practice and to on-campus courses taken, and reference to research/personal experiences pertaining to the Practicum/Internship). Faculty Supervisor/Field Supervisor Approval. In the case of Practica, the proposal is discussed with and approved by the faculty supervisor following any necessary modifications. In the case of Internships the final proposal requires approval by both faculty and field supervisors. Field Experience Office Approval. For research being done within Zone 6, the student submits the name, address & telephone number of the field supervisor to the Field Experience Office, Faculty of Education, which will officially arrange the placement. Ethics Review. If applicable, the student completes the requirements for ethics review by the Faculty of Education Human Subjects Research Committee. 4. Registration Normal registration deadlines apply to Practica and Internships (last day of add/drop for each semester). Please note: a late fee will be assessed for any registrations processed following the deadline; students are encouraged to begin the registration process well in advance of the registration deadline. Registration Form. The graduate student completes and signs the appropriate registration form and attaches the proposal. Appropriate Signatures. The student obtains the signature of the faculty supervisor, and in the case of an internship, of the qualified, field-based supervisor as well. Office of Graduate Studies and Research. The student returns the completed, signed form along with the proposal to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research for final approval by the Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Research and the Dean of Education (well in advance of the registration deadline). Upon approval, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research forwards the form to the Registrars Office. Completion Time. Normally, students are expected to complete the Practicum or Internship within one semester. 5. Practicum/Internship Procedures The student carries out the Practicum/Internship, in keeping with the original proposal (adapting if necessary in consultation with the supervisor). While a formal paper is less the object of a Practicum or Internship than is the case with an Independent Study, it is important to articulate a step-by-step account of the project. The report will include: Objectives of the Practicum/Internship. 2. A step-by-step plan of the gradual transition into new strategies/skills used, including procedures, practices, strategies, developments. 3. Data gathering devices to discern the effectiveness of the new strategy or practice. Such things as journals, marks, and student products are suggested indicators. 4. An interpretation of results, experiences, and findings derived from the Practicum or Internship. 5. Conclusion. 6. New and/or future questions, goals, challenges, implications raised as a result of this experience. 6. Final Grade The faculty supervisor (and the field-based supervisor in the case of an Internship) evaluate the Practicum/Internship (P/F) based on the degree to which the student has met the objectives outlined in the proposal and how the student has conducted and reported on the project. The faculty supervisor submits the completed grade for approval.
