Woods, John
Professor John Woods, FRSC, passed away on August 15, 2024. He was predeceased by his daughter Kelly and his devoted wife of 68 years, Carol. He is survived by his daughter Catherine and son Michael as well as his 10 grandchildren to whom he was a loving Dadda.
Professor Woods was one of the world’s foremost logicians. He received his BA and MA in philosophy from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto and his PhD from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Michigan in 1962. He taught philosophy at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto and then became Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Victoria. He went on to become the founding Dean of Humanities at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Calgary and thereafter served as the President, then Professor of Philosophy, at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. Following his retirement from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, he remained academically active in the position of Honorary Professor of Logic at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of British Columbia. John was also the past president of the Royal Society of Canada and held the Charles S Peirce Professorship of Logic at Kings College, London.
He was a superb and inspirational teacher, beloved by his students. He was the author of many learned books and papers and continued writing and publishing up until his death.
