New Course Winter 2026 - LBED2850A: Introduction to The Trivium: Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric

This course will introduce to students to the Trivium, the three interrelated subjects or 鈥渨ays鈥 鈥 grammar, logic, and rhetoric 鈥 that formed the basis of the earliest models of education in Greece and Rome, the foundation (along with the Quadrivium or 鈥渇our ways鈥 of geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, and music) of medieval university curricula, and the enduring elements of contemporary models of Liberal Education. The course will be divided into three equal parts, with instruction focused on introducing the history and theory of each subject along with practical instruction and exercises in each area: in English grammar (syntax and combinatorial sentence patterns), in logic (reasoning and argumentation), and in rhetoric (the 鈥渃ooperative鈥 arts of persuasion).
