Immigration and Travel Documents
Immigration documents will depend on:
- Your country of citizenship
- Length of stay (typically 12 weeks)
- Whether you require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an eTA
Mitacs provides immigration guidance and documentation. However, you are responsible for:
- Applying for the correct entry document
- Ensuring your passport is valid for your full stay
- Carrying your Mitacs award letter when travelling to Canada.
Important
Because you're coming to Canada to do work (research) for 120-days or less, you may qualify for the 120-Day Work Permit Exemption Public Policy.
You need to ask for a Visitor Record at the Port of Entry into Canada, because you need to have documented proof that you are allowed to work in Canada while you're here. Without this, you will not be allowed to begin your research, and you may have trouble with opening your Canadian bank account.
You must not engage in employment outside your authorized internship activities.

Arrival in Canada
You may arrive through:
- Calgary International Airport (YYC)
- Another Canadian international airport
If you are flying into Calgary, you will need ground transportation to Lethbridge (approximately 2.5 hours south).
At the port of entry, be prepared to show:
- Passport
- Visa or eTA (if required)
- Mitacs Award Letter
