About the Program

Take part in this once in a lifetime Summer Session I course for Indigenous students. Be immersed in the Māori culture as you learn about local Indigenous practices from the Māori people. The seven week course includes a two week Māori focused field study in New Zealand.

Class time before departure to New Zealand will be spent discussing various aspects of Māori culture and governance to build an understanding of Indigenous culture and issues in New Zealand. Students will also prepare a presentation on their own culture to share with Māori students.

The field study includes many organized activities that provide opportunities to learn about the Māori. These include the following and more:

• Traditional canoe on a river
• Māori history & creation story
• Māori King site visit
• Māori language lesson
• Exploring Rotorua
• Visit to a Māori elementary school
• Visits to Māori businesses
• Poraporoaki (farewell)

Eligibility

• This course is only open to Canadian Indigenous students that are declared First Nations, Métis, or Inuit.
• The pre-requisite for IGBM 3592 is one of IGBM 2500, INDG 1000, or INDG 1010. Course pre-requisite may be waived with permission from instructor.

Cost

Included in the Program

Thanks to generous funding from the Dhillon School of Business and NCEWIL, a large portion of the program costs will be covered for students. These include:

• Flight from Calgary to Auckland return
• Almost all meals - breakfast, lunch, and dinner (excluding weekends and at airports)
• Accommodations throughout the field study in New Zealand

Cost for Students

• $500 non-refundable deposit due March 28
• Tuition for one summer course - approx. $840
• Travel health insurance. If you are already opted in to the ULSU Health and Dental plan or your own plan covers international travel, you will not need to purchase additional insurance. Insurance is approx. $50-100.
• New Zealand ETA (NZeTA) - approx. $120

Application Process

1. Complete the before the deadline on March 24, 2025. There is no fee to apply.
2. Successful applicants will be notified by March 26, 2025.
3. $500 deposit will be due by March 28, 2025.
