What is the Storyteller at Large Program?

Since 1977, the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Applied Studies Program has partnered with the Lethbridge Public Library to offer students a one-of-a-kind opportunity: developing the art of oral storytelling while making a real difference in the community. 

Oral storytellers travel throughout Lethbridge and surrounding area, bringing myths, legends, folktales, and fairytales to life for children in elementary schools (K-6), daycares, senior鈥檚 centers, and to families at the library itself. 

Through guided training, hands-on practice, and real-world storytelling experiences, students build valuable skills in areas such as communication, adaptability and public engagement- while inspiring a lifelong love of stories and libraries among audiences of all ages.

  • French-Language Opportunity: Bilingual students have the chance to share stories with French Immersion audiences and expand their language and presentation skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend 4 interactive training workshops designed to support you in developing the art and techniques of oral storytelling.
  • Research, select, and present age-appropriate stories designed to engage and entertain audiences of various ages.
  • Inspire children, families, and seniors alike to explore books and storytelling by encouraging visits to the Lethbridge Public Library.
  • Represent the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Public Library with professionalism and enthusiasm.
  • Must be available two half days per week and some evenings and weekends during the semester.

Alisha鈥檚 second year at ULethbridge was enriched when she became involved with the Storyteller at Large Applied Studies program.

What are Applied Studies?

Applied Studies are customized work-integrated learning courses that allow you to earn academic credit by combining practical work experience with your academic studies, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application and giving you the opportunity to enhance practical skills.

Qualifications and Pre-requisites
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Second-year standing (a minimum 30.0 credit hours)
  • Strong communication skills, passion for storytelling, and experience presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Self-motivated, reliable individual who is able to work independently.
  • Background in drama, education, children鈥檚 literature, public speaking, or experience working with children is an asset.
  • French language storytelling opportunities available for students fluent in French (up to Grade 6 French Immersion audiences).
  • Students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply!

Basic Requirements
  • The Storyteller at Large Cohort runs every Fall, and Winter semester.
  • Submit monthly reports to the Applied Studies Coordinator.
  • The Applied Studies Instructor and a Librarian of Children's Services at the Lethbridge Public Library will evaluate your performance throughout the semester.
  • At the completion of your placement, the Librarian of Children's Services will complete a final evaluation assessing your performance.
